Jason Mayden, co-founder of Super Heroic, was the lead designer for the Air Jordan, the highest grossing Nike shoe in history. In his relentless pursuit to be the greatest sneaker designer, he did 1,000 sketches a day and became the first African American to land a design internship with Nike. And in just five years, he familiarized himself with other disciplines to earn his role as Senior Designer — a feat that normally takes around 15 years to achieve— and ultimately designed the Nike shoe of his hometown hero, Michael Jordan. Jason went on to obtain his Master's degree from Stanford and worked his way all the way to Senior Global Design Director for the Jordan brand. It's a fact — superheroes are everywhere these days. Movies, comics, video games...no matter what you're into, you can find capes and tights everywhere. But part and parcel of the long-running and wide-ranging storylines of superheroes is a sticky narrative question: how do we keep bulletproof gods who can literally fly somewhat grounded and vulnerable? Or at least enough so that we as the audience can still relate to them? On this episode, Saint and Jim break down the many flavors of Kryptonite, look at how Batman and Iron Man can hang despite having no actual superhuman powers (other than money), and what we can all learn from heroes of their eras, like Spider-Man and the X-Men. Plus, fans of tangents will enjoy a little of bit nerd news catch-up involving fantasy racism, the British Monarchy, and the fantastic Taylor Hawkins tribute show.

In this episode Jason catches up with Bobby Jones on how he came to create Super Heroic, a business aimed at encouraging both parents and children alike, the importance of play. If you’ve read comics for any length of time, chances are you have heard the phrase Golden Age or Silver Age. These phrases can apply to any medium, but in comics they are very specific eras; the one thing they all have in common is they involve superheroes, and each age saw the debut of countless new character additions to comics. Today the panel takes a look at each of the separate ages of comics and the heroes that came during that period.
As we head into a new year—and leave behind a year that was challenging for just about everyone on the planet, with the hope that this year will be better for all—we wanted to share an interview with one of the most optimistic, creative, and insightful people we know: designer, entrepreneur, and educator Jason Mayden. When we first interviewed Jason in 2018 for one of our Design Better Conversations, we knew we had to get him on the podcast. He had such a unique perspective on design as a service to humanity that we sensed our audience would love to hear his story. We spoke with Jason on a wide range of topics, from how a near-death experience in childhood shaped his career and life, to how he maintains his energy and focus, to why being a polymath is an enormous advantage in today’s job market. We finish the interview on a topic that strays a little from our usual subjects but is ultimately more important: how through all of our individual struggles we can benefit from recognizing our shared humanity. Takeaways: Learn what drove Jason to create his company SuperHeroic, and what he took away from the process. Hear how servant leadership shapes his work and creativity. Understand how Jason designs his life using tools like creative direction and brand strategy, Bio In his previous role at Nike, Jason oversaw the design and execution of all conceptual products, data-driven innovations, and inline lifestyle and performance product for Jordan Brand, as the Senior Global Design Director. Happy Labor Day! What better way to spend your day off from work then with us?! Although, some of you probably are working...(we worked at the theme parks, we've been there too). On this episode, Eric and Chris have a discussion about superheroes stemming from Chris's recent playthrough of the new Avengers video game. They run down the list of DC and MArvel movies to figure out what they've seen and what they haven't, and the conversation is so long, they have to push most of the other topics to next week! But fear not true believers, they have more to discuss, including a reflection on Chadwick Boseman's life and stories involving alcohol and their 21st birthdays. Oh, did you know this episode was recorded on Eric's birthday? HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC!!!

Caught up with Jason Mayden to talk about his design philosophies, entrepreneurship, the skills he's developed over time, and where he sees the future potential for creatives. Before graduating from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit,MI, Mayden relentlessly pursued an opportunity to work at Nike, ultimately becoming the first African-American to become a design intern at Nike's Beaverton, OR, headquarters. While working at Nike for 13 years, Mayden designed iconic footwear for athletes like Michael Jordan, working as both Jordan Brand's Senior Global Design Director and Director of Innovation for Nike's Digital Sport division. To add to his list of accomplishments during those Nike years, Mayden also pursued a masters degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business at the same time. After Nike, he became the Vice President of Design at Mark One before co-founding Super Heroic, whose mission is to enrich and empower the lives of children and their parents through play. Jason Mayden - Founder of Super Heroic, a company that creates children’s play and sports clothing designed to entertain, delight and surprise every child talks about why he would rather create strong children than fix broken adults. Mayden is a former lead designer for Brand Jordan. https://superheroic.com/ | Season 2 | Powered by eBay
Jason is widely known as a global brand director for the Jordan Brand at Nike, where he led and contributed to the creation of several shoes for athletes and cultural icons including Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan. Following his 13+-year stint at Nike, he started several things in tech at Accel and as an advisor for Stanford’s Design School. He then co-founded a startup with Stephen Curry and eventually creating his very own startup called Super Heroic, a tech-enabled system of play for kids starting with shoes that help them discover that they're actually superheroes. Contrary to what many people think that San Francisco is Silicon Valley, but it's not. In fact, it's not a place. Jason is therefore doing a lot to make sure they're able to leverage this platform to do a ton of educational work in places such as StreetCode Academy and collaborate with other teams like Black Jedi ZULU, and so much more. Jason is the founder of Trillicon Valley, a community of entrepreneurs, athletes, designers, and creatives.
“The Internet is a great tool but you can only learn so much. Actually going to a place physically where you have someone that has [designed] at the highest level, you learn so much more…that experience is invaluable.” FYI: Sneakers are a passion of mine. It's no secret. This episode is quite nerdy on the sneaker talk. Xavier Jones, footwear designer at Reebok, joined the podcast to discuss the footwear design industry and his path to designing for athletes like Shaq and Allen Iverson. Xavier's story begins in the Michigan basketball mecca of Flint. He let's us in on his story and how SLAM Magazine, And One and Ballislife inspired and led him to pursue a dream of designing sneakers for a living. We chat about some of our favorite kicks, discuss the evolution of the Jordan Brand, reminisce about the prime of the And One Mixtape and discuss how sport influences mainstream culture and hence sneaker culture. Xavier and I also discuss the unfortunate topic of violence which often happens at rare sneaker releases and how scarcity mindset and poverty effect the violent aspect of these events. Xavier also chats about some of the design processes as a sneaker designer; including what software designers use, why attending Pensole is vital, the collaboration dynamics of teams working on footwear products & more. Since our talk last year on his Trillicon Valley initiative, Jason Mayden is writing the next chapter of his narrative centered on building the next generation of resilient and capable youth. His new brand Super Heroic makes kids sneakers for now, but it’s not a sneaker company. Instead, it’s a brand focused on the concept of "play" and its essential role in helping shape the lives of kids. On his 112th trip through China for factory visits, we came along for the ride as we caught up with Jason as he talked about the next generation of sneaker wearers. Narration by

Jason went on to obtain his Master’s degree from Stanford and worked his way all the way to Senior Global Design Director for the Jordan brand.
