Going way back in history, sometimes you uncover incredible stories. This is one of them. Long before Louisville Slugger became synonymous with @MLB , baseball players did whatever they could to make their own bats or have someone else make a bat for them. Pete Browning turned to an acquaintance when he failed to get a hit for two straight games. He considered that a slump! So, Browning's acquaintance went to his woodworking shop and crafted Pete a new bat, and it worked. Pete proceeded to end his slump. It was the birth of the Louisville Slugger. Browning was unique. Browning played in the American Association (at the time, the AA was recognized as a pre-eminent professional league), the Players League, and the National League. He believed that a baseball bat had a limited number of hits in it; he gave each bat its own name, and he had many, many quirks. Despite his career batting average of .341, Browning is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Of course, an argument can be made either way, but the fact is, he was one of the best - if not the best - hitter of his time. On this episode of SFH, Tim Newby the author of "The Original Louisville Slugger," joins the show for a wonderful discussion on a baseball pioneer, Pete Browning.
On the other hand: It's boom time for the maker of Louisville Slugger baseball bats, thanks to a fad that's taking the sport by storm. Also: With Jordan's Principle funding up in the air, the Council for Yukon First Nations is forced to halt crucial community services. And the executive director tells us it's heartbreaking for the people she serves.

No athlete wishes for an injury, but when Kurt Ainsworth's bad shoulder derailed his professional pitching career, it created a big opportunity. Kurt and two partners started a wooden bat company in his backyard, bringing their intimate knowledge of baseball to every bat they sold. Soon, big-name players like Sammy Sosa were swinging them, but Kurt knew they had to expand to aluminum bats to reach the wider field of non-professional players. The company faced a near death experience when the NCAA decertified its bats for being too powerful, but eventually regained its footing. In 2013, Marucci Sports was acquired for over half a billion dollars; and next year, Marucci will slide past Louisville Slugger to become the official bats of Major League Baseball. Kid A.G. and Red-Eye, whose nickname comes from a night so wild, it left her eyes looking like they'd been on the losing end of a chili pepper eating contest. Shares a laugh-out-loud story of taking on a man with a penis so large, it should've come with a warning label, leading to a blowjob that was more like a medical emergency. From survival tips to the comedic aftermath, this episode is a lesson in what not to do with your mouth when faced with an anatomical anomaly. A true origin story is as wild as a donkey show in Tijuana. The Red-Eye Revelation: Red-Eye spills the beans on how she got her name - and it's not from being a night owl. We're talking about a blowjob so intense, it turned her peepers into bloodshot orbs for weeks. Imagine a dick so big, it's like trying to swallow a Louisville Slugger, leading to eyes so red, she looked like a character from the X-Men. She tells us about the night she thought she knew what she was getting into, but ended up with her eyes more bruised than a peach in a blender. The Girth of the Matter: We delve into the specifics - how big we talking? Eleven inches of terror, folks. Red-Eye shares how she managed this beast, only to end up with her eyes looking like they'd been in a bar fight with a bottle of Tabasco. It's a tale of survival, with no penetration below the belt because, as she puts it, that would've been like inviting a jackhammer to a tea party in her vagina. Red-Eye's Blowjob Survival Guide: Learn from Red-Eye's mistakes - or successes, if you're into that sort of thing. She explains how despite the near-death-by-dick experience, she managed to enjoy it, coming four times during the ordeal, thanks to some strategic nipple play. But the aftermath? A visual nightmare that made her invent some creative excuses for her bloodshot eyes, ranging from "I strained too hard while pooping" to the blunt truth for those who could handle it.

I haven't bought a baseball bat for a while, but I know you can buy one that's cheap and may not last long or one that costs a little more and lasts longer. But a million-dollar baseball bat? That's a little out of my price range. And lest you think I've lost it, not long ago a massive 46-ounce Louisville Slugger bat sold at auction for $1.26 million dollars! What in the world could possibly make a simple baseball bat worth that much to anyone? Who used it? It was the bat used by Babe Ruth in the first baseball game in the new Yankee Stadium in 1923. In the third inning, The Babe blasted a home run right into the right field bleachers, and somebody just laid down over a million bucks for the bat he used. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "How to Have a Million-Dollar Life." It was just a piece of wood until someone important used it to do something important. That's what gave that bat such great value. And that's what gives ordinary humans like you and me a whole new value - being used by the most important person in the universe to do something He considers important. An ordinary life is never quite ordinary again once that life has been used by Almighty God. And His choice of the person He will use is not based on the things most people look for. God doesn't care about charisma, or credentials, or connections, or cash. He's looking for character. He's a holy God, and He can only use holy instruments; people who keep themselves clean for His service. Paul paints a picture of two kinds of believers - one useful to the Lord and one of little use to Him - in 2 Timothy 2, beginning with verse 15, our word for today from the Word of God. He says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved." (By the way, Missionary martyr Jim Elliot said the only degree he really wanted was his A.U.G. degree - Approved Unto God.) The verse goes on to say, "a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth... In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble." Even our house has some things we use for throwing away trash and others that we use to serve special people for special occasions. So what do I have to do to have the honor; the incredible value of being someone the High King of Heaven can use? "If a man cleanses himself," the Bible says, "he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work." Man, those are beautiful words, "useful to the Master." Just like you or me going to the kitchen to find a glass to drink from, God is looking for someone who's clean to use. And He doesn't find very many. What a powerful reason for you to keep your heart and your mind pure, to repent of the junk you've been hanging onto, to meet with Jesus daily for that day's tune-up, to aspire to be, as Robert Murray McCheyne said, "as holy as a saved sinner can be." You'll be God's man, you'll be God's woman, through whom God's work will be done in people's lives. That temptation, that compromise can't possibly be worth losing out on a destiny like this! The beautiful thing is that anybody can qualify to be used by God. It's your passionate purity, your total surrender to be used totally for His purposes that qualifies you. You've abandoned your dreams for your life for His dreams for your life. They're so much bigger and so much better than yours. And the greatest legacy of your life will be to join Him in the rescue mission that changes people's eternities from hell to heaven. He's inviting you to join Him in that rescue mission for which He died. Make yourself available to the Lord of the universe and keep yourself clean for Him. When He picks up a life to use it, it takes on a meaning and a significance that nothing on earth can even get close to. And in God's hands, your life can be a holy home run!
Baltimore-based music historian and unwitting baseball biographer Tim Newby ("The Original Louisville Slugger: The Life and Times of Forgotten Baseball Legend Pete Browning") joins the show to delve deep into the story of one of the most formidable baseball players of the 19th century, whose mastery with a bat is still paying dividends today. Over his 13-year career (including now-defunct stops like the American Association's Louisville Eclipse/Colonels and the Players' League's Cleveland Infants), inveterate power-hitter Pete Browning claimed three batting titles and consistently ranked among the top hitters of his time - immortalized as the namesake and inspiration for the iconic Louisville Slugger bat, which was first custom-made for him by the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. Known as "The Gladiator," Browning was famous not only for his batting skills but for his unusual habits - refusing to slide, balancing on one leg, drinking tabasco sauce, and naming his bats after biblical figures - all in pursuit of improving his game. Behind the theatrics, though, lay a more tragic reality. Browning suffered from mastoiditis, a painful condition that gradually took his hearing and hindered his education and career, ultimately leading him to self-medicate with alcohol. His larger-than-life personality, coupled with embellished newspaper accounts, only added to the myth surrounding him. Newby helps us dance around the thin line between fact and fiction of Browning's life - including why the "Louisville Slugger" is not (yet?) in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. + + + SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The Original Louisville Slugger: The Life and Times of Forgotten Baseball Legend Pete Browning" (2024): https://amzn.to/3NbdIyd FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

There is a phrase I have often used when asked about my background which is, “When all is said and done, it's all about baseball!” This happens to me when performing concerts, speaking or even engaging in a conversation. I have realized that with a husband that played pro-ball for the Indians organization, it doesn't matter where the conversation goes. The moment I mention Greg's background, the focus is immediately all about baseball! So I have accepted this fact and realize that life can be likened to the intricate game of baseball, with its ebbs and flows, victories, and defeats. Just as in baseball, we face numerous pitches – some fast and unexpected, others slow and anticipated. The choices we make are similar to swinging at a pitch. The bases in a baseball game represent the milestones and achievements that propel us forward on life's journey. Just like a well-executed play, life demands teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. There's so much to learn from baseball, as I have discovered through the years. Upon marrying Greg, I thought the game wasn't too much more than nine innings that could last five or more hours! But I was wrong! The amount of strategy and consistent study for many players between and before every game surprised me. I will cover some interesting facts that I have learned about the player's stance, the history of bats and the specifics of balls used in a game. Though there are more aspects to explore, we'll focus on applying principles from those key elements. To wrap things up, we'll share some interesting stories of fans catching balls. It was Monday, December 16th, 1974. Henry Bedard, Jr. had gone right after school to buy a final Christmas present for his sister and was on his way home. Several people saw Henry on his walk back, even though he was not taking his normal route home. But he never made it home at all. When a group of young boys playing along the route stumbled upon a wallet and a bottle of perfume, they hid the items so they could return to the spot and get them later. However, when they returned to the spot, they made a far more gruesome discovery.Etsy Merch Shop: Want your own C&C clothing or mug? As a professional athlete, just turning 30, Taylor Johnson had to face facts on when to know it's over. There is an emotional and mental decision that one confronts, especially when you feel you could be in your prime as an athlete, but then realize it's really over for good. It's not an easy transition and adjustment to life after professional athletics, especially when fairly young, is a road many don't anticipate or look forward to facing. But when knees totally go out, that physical decision is made for you. This interview captures Taylor's feelings on when to know it's over when her decision was fairly fresh and recent. In fact, she made the decision twice. She played basketball for four years at Central Michigan University, then for team U.S.A in Taiwan. After multiple surgeries on her left knee, she knew basketball was over. Then, was drafted to play slow-pitch softball at the highest level, signed with Louisville Slugger as factory hitter as well as Easton and Wilson. But alas, when her right knee failed her, she knew it was totally over. However, Taylor found new purpose in pursuing education, specifically special ed, and we follow her journey in this interview. She will also be a new bride in 2023 as she'll be marrying David Johnson, also a professional softball player and MVP hitter, who happens to be Deborah's son. “When you meet resistance - teach. Because one of you doesn't have the context that the other one has. Rather than debate and clash - better to explain why it is.” Kyle Schlegel, is Weber Inc's VP of Americas Marketing and Direct-to-Consumer - where he helps bring to life the most innovative, legendary grills in the world. Prior to Weber, Kyle spent three years at Louisville Slugger before its acquisition by Wilson Sporting Goods, where he then led all marketing strategy and execution across the Wilson Racquet Sports portfolio, the #1 iconic name in tennis. And Kyle spent thirteen years at P&G in brand management on brands like Herbal Essences, Old Spice, Aussie, and Wella. Kyle is also the recipient of the CMO Club's Rising Star Award and AdAge's 40 Under 40. Kyle now lives just outside of Chicago with his wife, daughter, and pub. While sports plays a different role in life today, Schlegel still fits it in wherever he can among other priorities in life, such as friends, family, faith and serving others. You'll enjoy this candid, vulnerable, and insightful conversation about Kyle's journey from Kentucky farmboy to Chicago professional.

It's "bat day" here on the Garden Basics podcast. By the way, we're talking about the flying mammal, not the Louisville Slugger. Bats! They are a good friend of every gardener and farmer. Why? Because they're eating a lot of the flying pests that otherwise would be chowing down on your crops and flowers… or you. We talk with noted bat expert, the University of California's Rachael Long. Did you ever see that instruction on a seed packet or garden calendar that tells you when to set out plants? What, exactly, is setting out plants? America's favorite retired college horticultural professor, Debbie Flower, walks us through the process of acclimating those tender young, greenhouse or indoor-raised seedlings to the harsh environment known as your garden. We're podcasting from Barking Dog Studios here in the beautiful Abutilon Jungle in Suburban Purgatory. Since there are already enough Mr. Belvedere podcasts, we're going to stick to baseball history. Speaking of baseball, it's back! We start off the first pod of spring training with some historical anniversaries, one of the first players to get paid and the other an inside the park home run that left on fielder stuck to the wall & another one doubled over laughing. Our main topic this week is somebody we talked about briefly a couple of weeks back, the original Louisville Slugger, Pete Browning.
