With audiences increasingly turning to echo-chambers on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for their entertainment and away from traditional mass-media, is there anything that can bring communities together again? Jordan Schwarzenberger manages Sidemen, Europe's most popular YouTube collective – and recently went viral with a thesis over what he described as “the death of monoculture”. The Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneur and member of Downing Street's Small Business Council tells Amol why he thinks Gen Z are withdrawing into micro-communities. But he has some radical suggestions for how to survive and thrive in an era where unique social content can count for far more than being part of an established media brand. A Christchurch documentary maker is throwing her support behind a bill aiming to ban under-16s from social media after completing a 'distressing' social media experiment. Nadia Maxwell set up pages on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat posing as a 13-year-old - and was quickly bombarded with content related to eating disorders and mental health issues. She says she attempted the experiment before and after new safeguards for teens were introduced, but didn't notice much of a difference. "The only positive difference that I saw was that in part one there was a lot of oversexualised content - and so that's dropped down. But in terms of the sort of content you'd want your average 13-year-old sitting down in front of every day, there's so much heavy and distressing stuff." Embracing Success Beyond Social Media: A Faith-Focused Journey to Becoming a Published Author With so much focus on social media, it can be hard for anyone striving to become a published author not to feel the pressure to build a massive following. One might think it's necessary to be seen as successful. However, true success comes from following God's plan and staying rooted in your values. Becoming a published author doesn't have to revolve around likes, followers, or algorithms. Redefining Success to Become a Published Author It's easy to look at people who have achieved literary success and focus on where they are now—published, celebrated, and recognized. But what you don't often see is the long, unseen journey it took for them to become a published author. That journey looks different for everyone, beginning with defining success on your terms - not the world's terms. You can view success through three lenses: ours, God's, and the world's. Are you writing simply for personal ambition? Are you chasing worldly approval—fame, money, social media validation? Or are you seeking to become a published author in alignment with God's unique plan for your life? The world often tells us success means going viral, having a curated life online, or selling millions of copies. But God's definition of success is grounded in faithfulness, obedience, and impact—sometimes unseen but always meaningful. In episode 663, Megan chats with Jess Smith to uncover the untold truths of traditional cookbook publishing—from crafting a winning proposal to landing a deal, and whether a large social media following really matters. Jess is a mom to three girls based in Kansas City, Missouri. While living in Thailand and working at the U.S. Embassy in 2010 she took Thai cooking classes on the weekends and shared everything she learned on her food blog InquiringChef.com. In the years that followed she pursued her dream of making a career in food and became the chief recipe developer for the award-winning meal planning app Cook Smarts. Inquiring Chef has grown to over 6 million page views a year and has been featured in publications like Parade, Hallmark, and HuffPost. In 2024 Jess opened a cooking school for kids in Kansas City called Inquiring Chef Academy where she spends school breaks guiding elementary-aged kids through lessons on everything from baking sourdough to chopping vegetables to setting the table. Her first cookbook, Start with a Vegetable, will be released in January 2025. In this episode, you'll learn how to write a compelling proposal, find an agent, work with a publisher and balance the whole process with running a blog and looking after your family. Key points discussed include: - A strong proposal is essential: Jess spent 6–8 months crafting a compelling proposal, which played a crucial role in landing her book deal. - An agent can be a game-changer: Having an agent helped Jess find a publisher and negotiate a significantly better advance. - A huge social following isn't required: Jess landed a traditional publishing deal without massive social media numbers—her strong concept and blog traffic helped. - Cookbook writing requires balance: Writing a book took time away from blogging, requiring a shift in priorities. - The editing process is intense: Working with professional editors improved her writing and recipe development skills. - Promotion is an ongoing effort: The marketing push doesn't end at launch—Jess continues to promote her book through various channels. - Photography can be a major challenge: Jess took all the photos for her book, which was rewarding but also a significant time commitment. - Investing in support is worth it: Hiring help for styling, editing, and even dishwashing made the process smoother and more manageable. In this episode of the Dietitian Boss podcast, Libby Rothschild, founder of Dietitian Boss, a registered dietitian interviews Krista Kolodziejzyk, founder of Dietitian Success Center, about whether it's possible to grow your business and make sales with a small social media audience. Together, they share personal experiences, actionable strategies, and mindset shifts to help dietitians succeed regardless of their follower count.Bio: Krista Kolodziejzyk (RD, MPH, MBA) is a registered dietitian, entrepreneur, and founder of Dietitian Success Center, an online learning platform designed to empower dietitians and dietetic interns. With an MBA in Sustainable Commerce and an MPH in Community Nutrition, Krista has leveraged her skills to build a multi six-figure. She also teaches Nutrition Communication Strategies at Toronto Metropolitan University, where she mentors and inspires students as a lecturer and preceptor. Outside of her professional achievements, she's an avid baker, reader, and endurance athlete, having completed an Ironman triathlon and a 60-kilometer ultramarathon. What You'll Learn from this Episode: Can You Succeed with a Small Audience? Krista shares how her niche audience of dietitians, with under 3,000 Instagram followers, has been instrumental in growing her membership program. Libby emphasizes that success is not about follower count but about engagement, strategy, and sales skills. Mindset Shifts for Social Media Success Reframe your mindset: Every view or interaction represents a real person. Focus on building quality relationships rather than playing the volume game. Metrics That Matter Look beyond follower count to metrics like shares, saves, and overall engagement. Use feedback and analytics to refine your messaging and content strategy. The Importance of Strategy Over Tactics Identify your audience's biggest problems and craft content that addresses their needs. Avoid spending excessive time perfecting one piece of content; prioritize experimentation and repetition to learn what resonates. Practical Tips for Small Audience Success Start small: Build relationships one member at a time. Value your current community, even if it's small, and focus on delivering value to them. Develop both your audience-building and sales-conversion skills to maximize results. Avoiding Comparison Focus on your own growth rather than comparing yourself to others in your field. Recognize that content marketing is a skill that requires practice and time to master. Welcome to an interview with golf coach, entrepreneur, and personal development enthusiast Eric Cogorno. In this episode, Eric shares the most effective tips and techniques that he uses to grow his business and followers. Eric took his business from $80K to $1.5 million revenue a year -- in less than five years. He has grown an audience of 500K+ followers (and 3-5 million views every month) from zero. All the while, he decreased his work time from 60 hours a week to 10-15 hours! In 2017, Eric Cogorno took to YouTube the experience he gleaned from giving more than 20,000 in-person golf lessons. His distinct style of clear language and simplified concepts have attracted close to 400,000 followers across his channels and many millions of view from all across the globe. He's on a mission to make world-class golf instruction available to everyone and, through the process, create the biggest and best online golf school in the world. Born and raised in the Lehigh Valley, PA, Eric was a scratch golfer by the age of 15. He golfed through high school and at Lehigh University. He has been featured on Forbes.com and was voted as a Golf Digest Best in State Teacher. Eric is a golf teaching professional who took his business from $80K/year teaching one-on-one lessons by the hour to a multimillion dollar golf instruction brand utilizing these same skills (and strategies). In the process, he was able to also transform his entire lifestyle – from working on the lesson tee 7 full days a week, to having freedom to work when/where he chooses – splitting his time between Pennsylvania and Florida. In episode 497, Lexi Harrison teaches us the latest strategy to grow on Instagram and TikTok and how to generate a lot of audience engagement. Lexi and Beth are the mother-daughter duo behind Crowded Kitchen, a (mostly) vegetarian food blog. In addition to creating recipes, photography and videography for Crowded Kitchen's social media and website, Lexi and Beth also create freelance content for many food and beverage brands. In this episode, you'll learn about how to increase your social media following and improve your engagement using hooks, voiceovers and captions. - Post a Series to Build an Audience: Posting a series of related content on Instagram Reels encourages people to follow your account for more. - Leverage Facebook for content distribution: Leverage your content via Facebook, especially now that there is the ability to post reels. - Casual Setup and Filming: Avoid overstylizing your shots and use an iPhone for filming. - Longer Form Content for TikTok: TikTok strategy includes using longer videos to qualify for the creator fund (i.e. monetization). - Variable Posting Frequency: The frequency with which you post can vary without it necessarily affecting your views (e.g. daily, weekly, bi-weekly etc.). - Caption This: Detailed captions on Instagram Reels are emphasized for audience engagement. - Your Voice = Engagement: Voiceovers are crucial for engagement, especially on TikTok. - Showing Your Face: Showing one's face is not necessary for content success; Lexi suggests you focus instead on compelling hooks. - Practice, Practice, Practice: Experiment with different hooks to capture audience attention and drive engagement.
