News: Welcome one and all for another episode of The Good Man's Radio Show. Thanks for joining me through another delve into the musical archives from the 60's & 70's. In this episode I have gone back to my roots a little with a heavy leaning towards the 1960's and not so much of the 70's. Hope you don't mind too much but I have a whole load of new music from that decade and it reminded me why I got into it in the first place. There is still plenty of eclectic tunage to suit all tastes though I feel so I hope you like it. Talking of which, I now have a subscription to Ratemypodcast.com and I would really appreciate it if you could pay a visit and leave a few words about the show, whether good, bad or ugly. Thanks in advance and you'll find most of the links below. Anyway, enjoy the show and I look forward to any feedback, and remember, if you are enjoying it, please share the show and spread the love. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week Mark and I attempted to choose 3 Peter Banks era Yes songs each. As you'll hear, we turned out to be thinking along similar lines but it was still a very enjoyable experience listening to the earliest days of the band and discussing what made Yes unique even at that stage. Yesterdays label This topic was partly in response to a tweet or X post or whatever they are now called from Phil (Primarily_Prog) @primarily_prog who posted a photo of Time and a Word and said - Continuing tonight with perhaps the most undervalued album in the Yes discography.I seldom hear it mentioned, yet the interplay between Banks, Bruford, Squire and Kaye is quite something. And Jon's voice to top it off … pic.twitter.com/tiO0ZlZQ5E— Phil (Primarily_Prog) (@primarily_prog) April 21, 2024 What was special about the Peter Banks era? As we come to the end of our brief series on Edmund Crispin's mystery novel, it's time to discuss the puzzle (as it were). Does it work? How does it stack up? And then once that's out of the way, David, Heidi, and Sean dig into what really works in this book, whether it has anything serious to say, why there are so many Alexander Pope references, and much more! Edmund Crispin's The Moving Toyshop is one of David's favorites, so this conversation touches on why that is, what makes Crispin's mysteries different, what makes a good mystery novel in general—plus there's plenty of conversation on some of the funniest lines in the books. Metalworking has been central to the rise and success of Birmingham over hundreds of years. But how has this industry affected the culture of the city? Did the experience of working with metal and hearing the continuous clang of metal-on-metal seep into the personality and creativity of Birmingham's inhabitants? Gregory Leadbetter's poem traces this story from the discovery of ore in the Staffordshire hills, through the Staffordshire Hoard, the Birmingham Pieces from the Knights Templar, the establishment and development of Birmingham as a great metalworking centre becoming the Toyshop of the World, the development of steam power by Matthew Boulton, being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the City of a Thousand Trades, all the way to the birth of Heavy Metal Music. Metal City is a co-commission between BBC Radio 3 and The Space with funding from Arts Council England. It's a collaboration with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. And special thanks to Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery for metal facilities. Producer Melvin Rickarby, grandson of a metal worker and whose dad moved from the metal factory to the steel strings of the bass guitar. Producer Rosie Boulton, great great granddaughter of a brass maker. A Must Try Softer Production
Coppelius's Toyshop is one of the busiest stores in New York during the Christmas season. With life-sized toy soldiers on either side of the entrance and characters straight out of fairy tales roaming the aisles filled with toys, it's a paradise for kids of all ages. It's not a paradise, however, for Connie Willis's narrator, who is late for a Knicks game and just learned his new girlfriend has a kid that needs to be watched until her friend can pick him up from the toy store. To make matters worse, the narrator hates kids, and he hates the toy store. Unfortunately, when the little boy has to use the restroom in the store, the narrator will see all of Coppelius's wares as he tries unsuccessfully to find the boy, make the handoff, and get to his basketball game. All the while, he hears the store's music on repeat and the comforting refrain, “Come to Dr. Coppelius's/ Where all is bright and warm,/ And there's no fear/ For I am here/ To keep you safe from harm.” A reminder: We will take a brief holiday hiatus later in December, but we will return in January for our fourth season, when we read Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi.

On this episode, we're joined by Clive Bayley and Max Hunt of Mabel Greer's Toyshop! Bayley was a founding member of the pre-Yes band, and Hunt, who has played in Yes tribute band Fragile, joined several years ago for the album The Secret. They've since released an album together titled Whispers, and now, a NEW album titled One More Moment under the band name Affirm! What's the story behind the band name? What does the music sound like? What does the future look like for Affirm and Mabel Greer's Toyshop? All of this is discussed in this lively conversation! Baby, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more…Back in high school, this song brought me so much inspiration to reinvent my anxious self into the True Party King, along with Kanye's Stronger. It was such a productive catalyst that if Haddaway ran for President, I would have voted for him as well! This song was gifted via cassette tape by former Commodore64, now Flash Harry, after a metamorphic Insomnia Cookie Experience. The episode is mostly a writers room experience where we discuss the future Mind Palace Movie, an homage to nostalgic and liminal experiences. A love story beyond the “will they/won't they” question, the two main characters meet in an otherworldly Toyshop where they learn about their place in the universe through a game reminiscent of Yugioh Duel Monsters!

It took five years (or so) of podcasting, but I finally got my wish. In episode 256, we're playing the 2006 homebrew TOYSHOP TROUBLE. It's a game I've heard about for years and finally got to experience. But is it a wonderful surprise under my gaming tree or a giant lump of coal in my stocking? Tune in to find out. Neste episódio: Sex Pistols, Pharell Williams, Toyshop, Glen Matlock & The Philistines e The Faces.
