His work has appeared in The New York Times, Mother Jones, GQ, and Wired, among other publications. He is a two-time Gerald Loeb Award winner and former reporter for the New York Times. He lives in New York with his wife, theater director Daisy Walker, and two sons. Gary's New book is Saving Main Street: Small Business in the Time of COVID-19 Journalist Rivlin (Katrina) presents an illuminating account of how several small businesses weathered the Covid-19 pandemic. Rivlin introduces readers to TJ Cusumano, owner of an Italian restaurant in Old Forge, Pa.; Glenda Shoemaker, who runs a card and gift shop in Tunkhannock, Pa.; and the Maloney family, founders of a chocolate business in New York City, among others. They all faced tough decisions, such as having to lay off employees and find ways to pay mortgages and vendors, as well as dealing with the pain of potentially losing their life's work. Rivlin shows his subjects' struggles to keep afloat, as when Cusumano established a “pop-up market” to sell food supplies before they spoiled, and when the Maloneys slashed prices in an attempt to boost sales. Rivlin also highlights problems that small businesses have faced for decades, which made them especially vulnerable when the pandemic hit. In particular, he writes of how large corporations crush small businesses by offering low prices their competitors can't, and how the Small Business Administration often enacts plans “rigged in favor of the large and dominant” (2020's Paycheck Protection Program among them). This one's full of insight and shrewd reporting. Check out all things Jon Carroll Follow and Support Pete Coe Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page

In the early hours on the morning of June 8, 2017, employees at a Weis Markets supermarket in Eaton Township, Pennsylvania, were stocking and closing the store for the night. Shortly before 1:00 a.m., 24-year-old Randy Stair barricaded the exits of the store and proceeded to shoot and kill three of his co-workers before fatally shooting himself Randy Stair, 24, arrived for his late-night shift at Weis Markets in Eaton Township, Pennsylvania (just south of Tunkhannock), on the evening of June 7, 2017, during closing time at approximately 11:00 p.m. Stair went to the back of the store to the crew area and blocked an emergency exit at the far back of the store. He then continued with his duties, stocking shelves and cleaning up from the previous day. At 12:10 a.m., he sent out links to multiple files and videos which detailed his plans via his Twitter account; these files were labeled "Journal", "Suicide Tapes", and "Digital set" Stair then went back to the crew area in the rear of the store, blocked the remaining exits, then locked the automatic doors at the main entrance to the store. He then pulled out two pistol grip pump-action shotguns that he had concealed in a duffel bag and walked around the store and killed three employees—Victoria Brong, Brian Hayes, and Terry Lee Sterling. He then approached another coworker, Kristan Newell, who had not heard the shooting due to her listening to music with headphones on while she was labeling items and stocking shelves near the rear of the store. Stair was seen on CCTV surveillance camera footage standing behind Newell as she worked for about five seconds before she proceeded to the next aisle Outakes from explore with us.

We had an amazing time at the Best Sunday Ever in Tunkhannock!
On June 8th, 2017 Randy Stair (also known as Andrew Blaze) would arrive for night shift at The Weis Market and kill 3 co-workers before committing suicide. The headlines about the shooting would die down quickly, in much less time than had even been spent on it's planning, drowned out by similar back to back events. Each time we seem to be left in the same place, asking the same questions; finding it nearly impossible to heal through the aftermath when it's almost never-ending. A Pumpkin Porter an Irish Red and a Cider. We also signed up to help judge and steward the competition. Some of the best BJCP Judges and very experience home brewers in our area were there. From 9 am until noon over 130 beers were judged. We were having a great time talking to other judges and home brewers. After the main judging was through, all that was left was the best of show. The top 5 judges all gathered at one table to pick the Best Of Show, of all the Gold Medal winners from each category. I was amazed and honored when Al Hazen, the competition organizer and last years Best of show winner announced my name for GOLD in Ciders! And then Best of Show! And to top it all off, I got a 3min. interview with Dave Houseman BJCP Grand Master 3. ( I’m not worthy) It truly was an honor to be a part of the competition. Many thanks to all.Recipe for the BOS Cider:5 gallons of pasteurized cider from Braces Orchards Pa. they tell me the cider is a blend of 7 to 10 varieties of apples. Pour into a fermenting bucket, add 1 pack of dry Nottingham yeast. Keep near 65 deg f. for one week. Then add a dash of yeast nutrient. Raise the temp to 70 deg. f for 7 days or until the hydrometer reads 1.000 or less. Transfer to a keg or bottles. Cheers! Seasons Restaurant Podcast 4!On this episode I interview Bruce and Kathryn Arrowood , owners of Seasons Restaurant, in down town Tunkhannock Pa. The food is excellent and the beer selection is very well tailored to the menu. After the interview I had a crab cake sandwich with Cesar salad and a Franziskaner’s Hefeweizen. This style of wheat beer lends itself well to most salads, the aroma is fruity, like banana and bubblegum with some spicy notes of clove, all derived from the yeast. This is an excellent summer style of beer, very refreshing and flavorful. Hefeweizen is similar to a Belgian witbier. The grains are the same but the witbier usually has spices, such as orange peel, coriander and others. An excellent example is Victory’s WhirlwindWit.Cheers!
