Israel is widely known as the Start-up nation, producing a disproportionate number of high-tech companies, and a general ambiance of ingenuity. But what exactly is Israel's secret sauce? What makes Israeli society do things differently? Many answers have been offered, including the country's small and vulnerable area, its paucity of natural resources, its focus on education, and even its military draft. But do those answers do justice to the truth? To help us unpack Israel's secret, we are joined by Yaniv Rivlin. Yaniv is a high-tech entrepreneur who co-founded Bird, the company behind Tel Aviv's ubiquitous electric scooters, which have helped change the face of the city. Paul Zimnisky Diamond Analytics Podcast

Israeli-Belgian diamond industry consultant Erez Rivlin joins Paul to candidly discuss an array of topics including sanctions on Russian diamonds, rough diamond prices and the impact that lab-diamonds will have on the natural diamond industry. The episode begins will Erez giving his first-hand account of the evolution of the rough diamond trade over the last three-plus decades including what it was like in Russia before and during the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990's. Next, Erez tells a story of when he was in a sorting room with 500,000 carats of exceptional Russian stones worth over $3 billion. Paul and Erez then discuss the current Western (and pending further) sanctions on Russian diamonds and what it means for the larger industry and rough diamond prices. Finally, Erez predicts the future of the man-made diamond market and what it means for natural diamonds.                                                                                                                     Hosted by: Paul Zimnisky Guest: Erez Rivlin More information on PZDA's State of the Diamond Market report: www.paulzimnisky.com/products   Show contact: paul@paulzimnisky.com or visit www.paulzimnisky.com.   Please note that the contents of this podcast includes anecdotes, observations and opinions. K., Rose, V. A., Bishop Abstract: We are now in the era of millimeter-scale electron microscopy (EM) volumes collected at nanometer resolution. Dense reconstruction of cellular compartments in these EM volumes has been enabled by recent advances in Machine Learning (ML). Automated segmentation methods can now yield exceptionally accurate reconstructions of cells, but despite this accuracy, laborious post-hoc proofreading is still required to generate large connectomes free of merge and split errors. The elaborate 3-D meshes of neurons produced by these segmentations contain detailed morphological information, from the diameter, shape, and branching patterns of axons and dendrites, down to the fine-scale structure of dendritic spines. However, extracting information about these features can require substantial effort to piece together existing tools into custom workflows. Building on existing open-source software for mesh manipulation, here we present "NEURD", a software package that decomposes each meshed neuron into a compact and extensively-annotated graph representation. With these feature-rich graphs, we implement workflows for state-of-the art automated post-hoc proofreading of merge errors, cell classification, spine detection, axon-dendritic proximities, and other features that can enable many downstream analyses of neural morphology and connectivity. NEURD can make these new massive and complex datasets more accessible to neuroscience researchers focused on a variety of scientific questions. Copy rights belong to original authors.     Today there is so much noise. You turn on your laptop or open Social Media apps and there are more messages being thrown at us than we can keep up with. On this episode of the Lab Coat Agents Podcast, Jeff talks with a good friend of his and is a part of the Lab Coat Agents, Alex Rivlin, who also authored the book, “Static”. How do you focus on really being present where you are? Tune in! Episode Highlights: Alex Rivlin is the guest on the podcast today. He is a good friend of Jeff's and the author of a book called Static. Alex operates a team in real estate but he has been an entrepreneur for many years. He lives in Las Vegas with his girlfriend and two children. At 18, he started his first business in auto repair. He exited that business at 26 when he got into insurance. He then spun that off into a technology company, still with insurance where he grew to 165 employees in 3 years. When Alex exited that business he was looking to solve a new problem and help as many people as possible.  Alex shares the reason that he got into real estate specifically. He shares the stats in Las Vegas for real estate agents- 82% of agents don't renew their license for the second year.  What is it that sets apart the people that could make it? Alex first looked into developing and as he was researching and analyzing he decided he could make more of an impact in the real estate side. Success has different definitions for everybody. Alex has a passion to help people achieve what that is for them whether more money, harmony within the areas of your life, passive income, etc. Alex owns some portion of five different companies and is happy to show people the paths he has followed. Jeff talks about why people often shift to real estate. He also talks about the difference between balance and harmony. Do you feel like balance is elusive? Alex has advice about reaching for happiness. “If you're chasing happiness, it is an issue”, he says. How do you focus on really being present?  Society creates our narrative and we try to measure up with it but what if it is not what's right for you and your life and family? Create your own narrative, be proud of it and own it. Jeff asks Alex to touch on tactical things that many people struggle with.  When you compare the highlight reels with your behind the scenes, it's not good and it is often not what it seems. Alex shares a personal story about worry and being the person he thought everyone else expected him to be. He also shares how he navigated out of self-doubt. What is the difference between self-doubt, negative self talk, and areas of improvement? How does Social Media work along with good harmony and perspective? Alex talks about the questions he asks himself before going through with his plans, posts, etc. “Fake it till you make it” is one of Alex's least favorite things. He recommends to throw that to the trash and instead, be authentic; Be who you are. You have the aptitude and ability to do fulfilling things.  Alex talks about an American socialist, Charles Cooley and how a quote of his really summarizes self identity. You don't need to be what you think others are wanting you to be. In Alex's book he goes through how the brain works and how influences shape us. Advice comes from a personal lens and personal experiences. It is important to be aware of that and consider if you should take or leave it. Static goes deep in all aspects of life, the best tools you can gain are those that help you sort through.  Resources Mentioned: Lab Coat Agents | Website | Facebook | Facebook Group | Twitter | Instagram  Jeff Pfitzer   | Instagram | LinkedIn | Twitter Follow Up Boss (Sponsor) Chime (Sponsor) Z buyer (sponsor) Alex Rivlin:  Paperback book STATIC by Alex Rivlin on Amazon https://www.instagram.com/alex_rivlin/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/alex.rivlin.1

(12-9-22)Partisan warfare and gridlock in Washington threaten to squander America's opportunity to show the world that democracy can solve serious economic problems and ensure widely shared prosperity. Instead of working together to meet the challenges ahead—an aging work force, exploding inequality, climate change, rising debt—our elected leaders are sabotaging our economic future by blaming and demonizing each other in hopes of winning big in elections. They are weakening America's capacity for world leadership and the case for democracy here and abroad. Join us when Allan Rivlin shares the late Alice M. Rivlin decades of experience in economic policy making, in which she argued economic policies could lead to sustainable American prosperity and opportunity for all, but crafting them requires the tough, time-consuming work of consensus building and bipartisan negotiation. In a divided country with shifting majorities, major policies must have bipartisan buy-in and broad public support. Otherwise we will have either destabilizing swings in policy or total gridlock in the face of challenges looming at us, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

They all faced tough decisions, such as having to lay off employees and find ways to pay mortgages and vendors, as well as dealing with the pain of potentially losing their life's work. Rivlin shows his subjects' struggles to keep afloat, as when Cusumano established a “pop-up market” to sell food supplies before they spoiled, and when the Maloneys slashed prices in an attempt to boost sales. Rivlin also highlights problems that small businesses have faced for decades, which made them especially vulnerable when the pandemic hit. In particular, he writes of how large corporations crush small businesses by offering low prices their competitors can't, and how the Small Business Administration often enacts plans “rigged in favor of the large and dominant” (2020's Paycheck Protection Program among them). This one's full of insight and shrewd reporting.  Check out all things Jon Carroll Follow and Support Pete Coe Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page

Saving Main Street: Small Business in the Time of COVID-19 by Gary Rivlin A veteran journalist follows an inspiring ensemble cast of small business owners fighting to keep their businesses alive through Covid-19, while exploring the sweeping trends and government policies that had brought small businesses to the breaking point long before the coronavirus hit. There is a tendency to fetishize small business even as it shrinks before our eyes. Americans extol the virtues of small, local, often family-run shops, yet buy from big-box retailers and chains that dominate the competition. Even before the pandemic, small businesses seemed endangered. When Covid-19 hit, the resounding question was: How will they be able to survive this? Saving Main Street is an unfiltered, up-close examination of a small group of business owners and their employees, their struggles, and their strategies to survive. It is an eye-opening tale of grit, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit that follows three businesses: a restaurant owner and his rambunctious staff, an immigrant running her own hair salon, and the owner of a “non-life sustaining” gift shop—alongside a larger cast of vividly drawn characters. Gary Rivlin focuses on the first days of the Covid lockdown and the ensuing eighteen months of chaos, including the personal and financial risks, a contentious presidential election, and contradictory governmental guidelines—all which compounded the everyday challenges of running an independent business trying to attract and retain customers who expect low prices, convenience, and endless choice. Rivlin keenly observes small businesses from all angles, examining commonly held “myths”; contradictions in government policy; enormous racial and class fissures; a national self-identity intrinsically connected to the ideal of small business, and how the decline of this American way of retail impacts our notions of American exceptionalism, community, and civic duty. As Rivlin reveals, there's something enduring about small business in the American psyche. Life will have changed in unprecedented ways on the other side of this pandemic, yet hard times will also create opportunities, offering hope and survival.

Rivlin joins us to talk about how the pandemic forever changed how small businesses operate and how they are faring now. As a young boy in 1949, Reuven Rivlin had a simple dream: that the fledgling State of Israel would grow to two million citizens. Today, the country is home to almost ten million. So “Ruvi” - that's his informal nickname in Israel - certainly had a great dream. But the future 10th President of Israel admits he really didn't know how big to dream. In this episode of storymark℠, President Rivlin recalls a turning point in his career while serving as the Knesset's Communication Minister: the moment he decided he didn't want to become Prime Minister. Yet Rivlin took an alternate route: in 2014, Ruvi took office as Israel's 10th President. Beloved by Israelis of all backgrounds, President Rivlin served boldly, unafraid to lead, even when it meant going against the status quo.More about storymarkstorymark is brought to you by itrek studios. itrek is a non-profit that inspires tomorrow's leaders through peer-led, week-long treks in Israel to experience its innovation, diversity and complex reality firsthand. Jack Rivlin is the founder and former CEO of the Tab — a network of student newspapers. Started while Jack was at Cambridge, the Tab hoped to bring energy, levity, and a tabloid edge to the dull and worthy university papers — and used volunteer student journalists to report on the things that actually mattered to them. It soon grew to plenty of other universities in the UK, and in 2016 Jack raised a few million pounds of investment from none other than Rupert Murdoch himself, who Jack and his partner met the week after Glastonbury, with glitter still stuck to their faces. After expansion into the US, the Tab's fortunes began gradually to wane; until Jack decided to sell up entirely at the start of 2020 — a process that became a fascinating ordeal in its own right. In a wonderfully honest episode, Jack tell us just how hungover he was for that infamous meeting with Rupert Murdoch; give us the inside scoop on the Aziz Ansari story that broke the internet; tells us how one of the Tab's early legal corrections is now used in Journalism textbooks; warns against the perils of the Facebook algorithm; and discusses why newsletters have become the media outlet of the moment.

The proposed legislation would essentially enshrine much of the country's Jewish identity into the backbone of the country's ‘basic laws' but critics including President Rivlin, the Attorney General, and even the Knesset's own Legal Advisor say parts of the bill may actually harm the Jewish state. Surrogacy bill amended Israel has often touted itself as the only safe haven for members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Middle East, but while that community is undoubtedly a treasured part of the country's identity, equality laws have sometimes been far less forthcoming. Tariff troubles Despite very warm relations with Israel, the Trump administration has just made a devastating decision that may have dire consequences for Israel's economy.
