Welcome back to another insightful episode as we continue our journey into detoxifying teams and fostering a more compassionate workplace culture. Today, we're delving into the vital topic of developing compassion within ourselves and our teams, or what today's guest likes to call “Compassion Management.” Let's face it: compassion isn't always a natural trait, especially in fast-paced environments like veterinary hospitals. It's all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, directing orders without truly connecting with our team members. But our guest today, Rebecca Fox, a seasoned CVPM and Hospital Administrator from Orlando, FL, is here to shed light on Compassion Management. With her wealth of experience, starting from the ground up as a receptionist to her current leadership role, Beckie brings a fresh perspective on nurturing compassion within our teams. Throughout this episode, we'll explore practical strategies and insights shared by Beckie on how to infuse compassion into our management approach. From understanding the "why" behind processes to fostering empathy and trust among team members, we'll uncover actionable tips to cultivate a more supportive and empathetic workplace environment. Show Notes: [2:14] - You can manage well while keeping your humanity intact. [3:24] - Team members need to understand the “why” behind processes. [4:22] - Compassion Management is seeking to understand someone else's perspective. [6:36] - Empathize with someone's situation and assume good intent. [7:57] - If we can't trust each other and communicate, then patient care suffers. [9:04] - Self-awareness is a skill that not everyone possesses. [11:46] - We can give team members techniques to put problems aside to focus on patient and client care. [13:05] - Managers need to know the scope of their role. Knowing your boundaries is important for successfully leading others. [16:26] - The team will take their cues from the top down. Hold yourself to the same compassion standards. [18:31] - Not all natural leaders are in a leadership role. Identify and communicate with the influencers on your team. [20:15] - You have to set the standards yourself, hold yourself to the same standards, and communicate why the standards are important. [24:51] - Compassion extends to clients as well. [26:06] - Beckie recommends some books and resources for Compassion Management. [28:02] - As leaders, we need to remember that we serve the clients and the team as a whole entity. It's not about us. Being a practice manager sometimes feels like you're working in a bubble. Your role is unique to each practice and while other team members have colleagues in the same role to talk to, you as the manager are the only one at your practice. And once you are managing, it seems like you need to have all the answers. So, having a solid network of people in your corner can be a real lifesaver. Someone you can turn to for advice or just a listening ear. Maria Pirita is excellent at networking and she joins us today to talk about how to create this support group for yourself. Maria is a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager, was in the field as a Hospital Administrator in Chicago, and is currently the Business Development Coordinator for the Uncharted Veterinary Conference. Don't make it hard on yourself when we are all in this together. Show Notes: [2:13] - Both Maria and Debbie fell victim to working in a bubble without the support of others. [3:32] - The job of the practice manager is unique and can feel isolating. [4:47] - Fear of competition and fear of rejection are real concerns as well. [7:34] - It can be scary to put yourself out there, but networking can be a total game changer. [9:15] - One benefit of networking and connecting with other managers is the validation you don't receive in your practice. [11:47] - Sharing advice is also a part of this support group concept. [14:49] - Even virtual networking is valuable. [16:38] - Public forums or public online groups can leave negative comments unanswered. Because there are so many people in these groups, there is a lot to sift through. [18:32] - There are groups for every type of team member. Look for yours. [19:44] - Both private and public groups provide a lot of value in networking. [22:01] - Be open to meeting people. [23:40] - Pinpoint what your needs are at the moment and make time for networking. [25:51] - Reach out before conferences to meet people you've connected with virtually in person. [27:07] - There are several ways to justify conference expenses. Moving on from Marworth. In 1989, Nick became the vice president of a 50 bed adult and 50 Bed adolescent treatment center, and Wilkes Barre pa Clearbrook. From 2001, to present, Nick is also the co founder of "Families helping Families", free education, support programs offered in Pennsylvania, focused in Scranton, Tunkhannock, Bloomsburg,Dallas. Nick stops by today to catch up and have a chat. We talk about this prolific career, which will be coming up on 50 years, and all the changes that have happened in drug and alcohol treatment. Some of the changes for good, some for ehhhhh, and some driven by technology. . One specific topic we talk about is "Medication Assisted Treatments." And, for lack of a better term, maybe stigmas in Recovery Communities that existed, or fundamental definitions of recovery, that people in the last four decades had to loosen their grip on, and Nick experienced this firsthand of how these became life saving medications, and wider paths to recovery for individuals. We do a kind of a deep dive on MAT, and I learned a lot, that was the point of this podcast to "learn in real time". So I hope you enjoy the discussion. Support the show

This can be attributed to a number of causes: burgeoning human population, destruction of habitats, wildlife trade, pollution, and the ongoing climate crisis. Since 1971, following the blowout on a drilling rig off Santa Barbara, California, there have been numerous oil spills across the Pacific Coast and Gulf of Mexico. These disasters have impacted the survival and habitats of thousands of animals. Some species and their wetlands and beaches have already been irreversibly damaged. There are, however, important interventions necessary to protect wildlife and their habitats. On this show, Caught in the Crossfire: Rehabilitating & Releasing Native Wildlife, Debbie McGuire and Dr. Elizabeth Wood of the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center [http://wwccoc.org/] join us to discuss their shared commitment to protecting native wildlife and how we might respond to the urgent call of our animal relatives. Listen to our show on the Orange County Oil Spill last year: Deadly Waters – Oil Spills & The Future of Offshore Drilling https://wilderutopia.com/ecojustice-radio/deadly-waters-oil-spills-the-future-of-offshore-drilling/ Debbie McGuire's life was forever changed after encountering the tragedy of oil-soaked birds following the 1990 American Trader Oil Spill. At that time, no permanent facility existed to rehabilitate and assist impacted birds. After retiring from 25 years as Hospital Administrator at a veterinary hospital, Debbie, who has a Masters of Business Administration, became the Executive Director of Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Huntington Beach. Dr. Elizabeth Wood is the Staff Veterinarian and Medical Director for Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center. She attended veterinary school at Western University of Health Sciences and obtained her undergraduate degrees from UC Santa Cruz. She has experience in local and international wildlife programs and has always had a passion for conservation and environmental activism. She and Debbie work together to rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife, particularly those animals which have been injured, orphaned or "oiled," and restore them to their native habitats. Catherine Magaña CFP®, Steve Wolff and Ethan Nkana J.D., MBA discuss the importance of contract review, his passion for assisting physicians in earning their full value and gives examples as to how doctors have left money on the table. Furthermore, they discuss the leverage and timeframe that physicians could utilize when going over their contracts, either with the same hospital, or when changing locations. Ethan Nkana, J.D., MBA (Founder of Rocky Mountain Physician Agency) advocates for physicians to get the value they have earned in their base salary, benefits and bonuses by using the same industry-leading physician salary data hospitals use. Ethan utilizes his legal and business training background while working originally at a hospital in physician contracts, he observed that physicians frequently left money and value on the table during their contract and salary negotiations with hospital executives. 760-692-5600 | savvydoc.com Savvy Doc Financial Planners is an SEC Registered Investment Advisor.

Covid-19 tests administered at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital over the last three months clearly show when the surge hit locally. Hospital Administrator and CEO Douglas Tanner reported that through Aug. 25 the hospital had performed 470 Covid outpatient tests. Of those 122 were positive, a 26% positivity rate. Fifty-one cases were still awaiting results. By comparison, in July, 220 tests were administered with 51 positive, or a 23% positivity rate and in June, 124 tests were done with only three being positive, a .02% positivity rate. There seems to always be a new threat on the horizon when it comes to network and software security. Not only that, but there are always new gadgets coming out that make previous security measures less effective or obsolete. This aspect of running a practice can be frustrating. That's why we have Ben Spinks on the show today to help us better understand the right policies to have in place and general tips on practice security. Ben Spinks temporarily (or so he thought) entered the veterinary industry in his current capacity in 2004. He planned on helping a veterinary practice “run some numbers” over the summer to delay his inevitable entry into the corporate world. That one summer stretched longer than he anticipated, and he's been the Hospital Administrator of Tipp City Veterinary Hospital ever since. Outside of his role at TCVH, Ben helps other businesses run more efficiently, helps companies in the veterinary industry communicate effectively using video, and is part of the consulting teams at VetSuccess and at VetSupport. Using his IT knowledge to better secure his practice, he is also helping others keep up with routine security audits and in today's episode, providing a lot of great actionable steps to take to make sure you are safe. Show Notes: [3:14] - New threats come out all the time. IT works hard to mitigate new threats. [4:29] - Cutting costs can be detrimental for some IT tasks. [5:42] - Debbie shares how she runs new things by her local IT guy for guidance. [6:30] - Ben highly recommends regular security audits. [7:18] - Security audits can be IT based and apply to HR as well. [8:30] - Ben describes external and internal security audits and how often to have someone check everything out. [10:07] - There has been some recent discussion on VHMA forums regarding keypads. Ben addresses the concern and explains the different varieties. [12:34] - The constant changing of passwords can be hard to manage. Using a password manager can be very beneficial. [14:38] - Ben and Debbie discuss common password best practice. [16:03] - Veterinary specific software and computers may have different best practices than other types of industries. [17:40] - Policies regarding IT are extremely important to have in place and follow. [20:21] - Ben highly recommends getting professional assistance in setting up a strong firewall. [21:14] - What are some things you should have in place for security and backups? [23:39] - Security, backups, and IT need to be budgeted in. Things are pricier than Debbie thought they would be but the risk without is too huge. [25:53] - Virus protection that is updated on a regular basis and routinely checked is a non-negotiable need. [28:29] - Network cameras are a great place to start if you do not have security cameras in place. [30:20] - Ben addresses team access and what it might look like in some practices. [32:11] - Two factor authorization is best practice. [34:12] - Talk to your team and get everyone on the same page with policies. Thank you for listening. Remember you are not in this alone. In this 100th episode of Rural Matters and the final installment of our four-part series spotlighting rural hospitals, produced in collaboration with and sponsored by the Center for Optimizing Rural Health (CORH). Michelle chats with Pamela Tillman, Hospital Administrator for LifeBrite Community Hospital of Stokes in rural North Carolina, and Dr. Nancy Dickey, CORH's Executive Director. CORH selects 30 hospitals for the HRSA-funded Vulnerable Rural Hospital Assistance Program. Those chosen for this free program, whose application period closes July 30, will have access to CORH's team of rural health experts and receive technical support. CORH is working hard to establish depth in hospital leadership, Dickey adds. Tillman's 14-bed critical access facility had three COVID cases recently as the pandemic surged again in certain areas of the country. Her hospital had to pivot during the pandemic, she notes, to implement telemedicine initiatives that could provide treatment for patients. During the pandemic, Dickey stated that CORH helped hospitals keep up with current regulations and hospital best practices. This episode and the entire four-part series is sponsored by CORH, https://optimizingruralhealth.org

There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all medical care. Every situation is different and requires a different level of treatment. However, it can be confusing to sift through all the options to figure out what is best for your loved one. Facilities and insurance companies all have their own interests in the care your loved one receives. So how can you tell what is the best solution? In this episode, Hospital Administrator and Social Worker Becky Wiggins discusses the difference between in-patient rehab and skilled nursing care and how you can get insurance to cover the treatment that is needed (rather than what’s cheapest). Here Are The Show Highlights: Measurable Medical standards that indicate your loved one may need to be in a rehab hospital (4:32) The 2 defining factors that distinguish in-patient rehab from skilled nursing and how to tell which is right for your loved one (6:13) Common misconceptions about what insurance will pay for and where you can get straight answers (10:53) How rehab hospitals can convince insurance companies to cover things you can’t and how to start the process (11:14) Why you’ll benefit from attending a rehab presentation no matter how good your loved one’s health is right now (15:56) For daily 5-minute mind exercises, head over and like my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hcafortworth/ You can also find additional support and resources by calling Home Care Assistance at 817-349-7599 or visit our websites https://www.homecareassistancefortworth.com/ and https://itsmyturntocare.com/.
Dr Philippa McCaffery started her entrepreneurial journey, almost by chance, after becoming just a little disillusioned working first as a GP, and then as a hospital administrator in the public & private health system in Sydney. Nonetheless that early career experience stood her in good stead when she pivoted from public medicine to buying one single suburban skincare clinic, one of the first in Sydney doing laser hair removal. That first clinic was so overwhelmed with women clients needing help with unwanted body hair, that she and her new business partner Alarna Longes, a young uni graduate who came on board initially to help boost marketing, built up their business - not only doing hair removal by laser, but also offering a non-surgical, non-oral drug treatment for adult female acne. It proved to be a game-changer. After years of hard work, with a few missteps along the way, the result was many many happy clients. 45 clinics later, the pair had built something substantial, and in mid-2018 they sold their cosmetic skincare clinic business to large ASX-listed company, Australian Pharmaceutical Industries for a cool $127million. Have you ever seen a Mystic Unicorn poop creamy, delicious, ice cream? If you caught the viral sensation ad for the Squatty Potty then you are familiar with some of Derral’s work. But Derral was not always making millions of dollars for himself and his clients creating incredible direct response video ads. After Derral Eves graduate from college with a degree in Public Relations and Advertising he landed his “dream job”: As a Hospital Administrator. No Really. That WAS his dream job. And he loved it… at first. Within six months of diving in he had saved his new company $680,000 and went to his boss for a $10,000 per year raise. A 1.5% commission seems like a pretty good deal eh? Well, not according to his boss, because if Derral got the tiny raise he was asking for he would be making more money than his direct supervisor. We wouldn’t want to rock the boat over a measly $680,000 saved in the first six months on the job, would we? “I knew right then and there that I needed to get out... I needed to work somewhere where my work was appreciated.” Despite having a brand new baby and wanting the security of a salary for his family, in 1999 Derral ended up in business for himself generating traffic for websites and doing internet marketing. In the early days, Derral was being paid a base for his work but ALSO a commission of final sales, so he was looking for every possible way to get visits to convert into sales. And video was his Golden Ticket. Fast forward to 2016, Derral has been the Executive Producer and Project Lead for the Squatty Potty ad, he’s launched the musical careers of the Piano Guys from retail piano store owners to global sensation, and recently celebrated over 1.8 BILLION total views on Youtube from videos he has produced. This episode is NOT about a specific crowdfunding project or crowdfunding necessarily. But it IS about the most crucial element of your crowdfunding campaign that you have to nail if you want to beat your funding goal: Your Video. People who come to your page will base the majority of their buying decision on quality of the MESSAGE in the video, (fortunately, NOT the “expensiveness” of the production). In this episode, Derral is going to teach you exactly how to make a video with a MESSAGE that sells. Derral considers himself a student of crowdfunding videos and offers up a number of wildly successful crowdfunded campaign videos as examples of his concepts at work. This could be the most actionable podcast I have ever recorded. Pay attention, listen to it at least a half a dozen times. Especially pay attention to how to study successful crowdfunding video online, and it will all but guarantee you hit your crowdfunding goal. You will learn: The 5 Step The Power Pitch Formula Derral uses in EVERY single one of his videos, beit a sales video for a Shark Tank client, a 1 minute sneak peek video for his own sites, to drive traffic, sales, and virality. How to get someone like Howard Stern to endorse your product, and how to leverage that endorsement into credibility and sales. Why your crowdfunding video MUST inspire for it to have a chance. Why Derral doesn’t work on the FIRST 15 seconds of his videos until the AFTER the rest is done, and why he spends MORE TIME working on the intro than the rest of the video combined. Why every single video you make needs just ONE Call To Action. The biggest mistake most video marketers make that kills sales, and how to avoid it in your campaign. Why video is the BEST way to sell your products and services without you being in the room face to face with your prospect. Why “30 seconds ads” are a relic from TV and long form “edutainment” ads on the internet are crushing them in sales. How to study the most successful Crowdfunding videos to be able to model their structure to basically guarantee your success. Why “authenticity” is so important, and how a low budget iPhone video can beat a high budget production if it is more aligned and authentic to your story. The importance of having at least three “credibility pieces”, and how you can get them even if you consider yourself an “unknown, inexperienced, rookie”. To contact Khierstyn visit www.khierstyn.com
Andy & Stephanie team up with "The Administrator" Mike Falconer to discuss one of the most vital skills anyone working in veterinary medicine can have: giving feedback. Commencing in 2014, The Deming Institute has recorded podcasts on a monthly basis, featuring 20 to 30-minute interviews by Tripp Babbitt with members of the Deming Community who are advancing the use and explanations of Dr. Deming's ideas. Beginning in 2016, Tripp introduced a second series of podcasts, with a focus on current events, coupled with commentary from Dr. Deming, sessions titled “10 Minutes with Dr. Deming.” In the 5th 10 Minutes episode, Tripp explores the need for layoffs and prospects for organizational improvement through the utilization of Dr. Deming's management method in the 21st century. To borrow from the opening page of Dr. Deming's book, The New Economics, The people of the word no longer live in isolation…..People make comparisons….Anybody else lives better, so everybody supposes...People blame their plight on to the government and its leaders, or to management and its leaders. They may be correct. But will change in leadership assure better living? What if the new leaders are no better? How could they be? How much time have new leaders to demonstrate that they have brought a better life? By what method could new leaders bring improvement in living? Using excerpts of interviews with Dr. Deming, dating back to 1980, Tripp reminds us of Dr. Deming's vision of guiding leaders, whether Mayor or President, Democrat or Republican, University Chancellor or Vice President of Finance, Hospital Administrator or Police Chief, away from “best efforts and hard work, not guided by new knowledge, they only dig deeper the pit that we are in." Dr. Deming's aim in writing The New Economics was to bring new knowledge. “This book,” he wrote, “will teach and explore some basic ground rules of knowledge for change.” In this podcast, hear Dr. Deming talk about the Japanese industrial miracle, the use of statistical methods and statistical thinking, including their roles and their limits, the job of management, productivity, and crisis management. If you have comments or suggestions for future 10 Minutes with Dr. Deming topics, please contact Tripp at tripp@deming.org or through Twitter @demingpodcast.
