Buckle up. "Inside the Issues: The Podcast" hosts Alex Cohen and Sara Sadhwani try to make sense of the "topsy-turvy" events in local politics. This week, brawls broke out at the Los Angeles Museum of Tolerance when a film screened about the Hamas attack on Israel. And earlier in the week, an altercation at a Westlake Village rally tied to the Israel-Hamas war led to a man's death. Sara, who works on a college campus, explains how students are fired up as the Middle East situation intensifies. Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom's popularity has declined amid negative headlines and his recent trip to China, despite the fact that his policies remain popular. California voters also seem generally unhappy with President Joe Biden as of late. On more local levels, Alex and Sara address LA Councilmember John Lee suing the Ethics Commission after it accused him of violations. Meanwhile, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo remains in hot water after she recently crashed into two vehicles and was booked on suspicion of DUI. And down in Orange County, a judge has refused to halt an ongoing recall election against Santa Ana Councilmember Jessie Lopez.
How does an activist Instagram account help bring attention - and change - to New Orleans' streets? On this week's episode, we welcome Digital Void collaborator, PhD student, and researcher Alex Turvy to discuss Look at This Fuckin' Street: an Instagram account that highlights hazardous roads, potholes, and crumbling infrastructure to put pressure on city government to improve long-ignored conditions. This conversation was recorded on February 27, 2023About Alex Turvy:Alex Turvy is a PhD student and researcher focused on digital culture and memes. Currently, he is working on a few different threads of research: how identity and authenticity are performed on social media, niche meme pages on Instagram and memetic literacy, and how boundaries and deviance are managed by communities on TikTok. What ties these together is an interest in understanding how practices on social media are woven through everyday life -- despite what you hear sometimes, social media is very much real life. Prior to this, he spent ten years working in public schools, spending five years as an early elementary teacher and five years as Director of Operations. He lives in New Orleans with his partner Devon and their daughter June.Keep up with Alex Turvy:Twitter | InstagramShow Notes:Look at This Fuckin' Street Instagram12:47 - Critical Discourse Analysis20:26 - Decorated pothole, Another Decorated Pothole31:00 - MCM Wholesale Instagram32:15 - Digital DualismEditorial note: Turvy's paper is not yet available to the public. The Heroes! Leave Gravenhollow to return JimJar, Topsy & Turvy to Blingdenstone through insane lightning slingers to find the city under assault from the Pudding King. Dungeons & Dragons: Out of the Abyss
One fine day, ants started flying in the sky. They swarmed across space and bit any human who came along the way, harder than mosquitoes. They attacked all sweets, there was nothing beyond their reach. The bees started crawling. They could sting your feet without your knowing it. You would not scream with an ouch only if you happened to be watching the giraffe. The giraffe had taken to hopping on its head while its four legs faced the sky. “You will get a headache,” screamed the fox by way of caution. But with foxes one never knew whether it was out of concern, or just a cunning trick to make the giraffe stop. But the fox walked the talk and ran behind the giraffe with a balm and an ice pack. But in just a minute, it was difficult to tell who was running behind whom. The tigress could not care. She was painting her nails. Red, she thought, was a good colour or else a bright orange. The crow liked pink for he felt that made him noticeable as the leader of the band. Of course, he was not singing. Everyone knew he did not have a great voice, but he was playing the piano and what music he made! The only one who did not hear that music was the donkey, for he was listening to a podcast on rebirth. The cat was delivering the podcast. Nine lives they say, the donkey mused. The earthworm was watching all that was happening with wonder. Not wanting to be left out she wiggled the earth off her and decided to glide into a salon. A little makeover and given her figure, she would be able to wear one of those figure-hugging dresses she had seen in the showroom window the other day. The beautician was happy for though she loved her job as the beautician she was still not humble enough to clean the feet of lowly animals. So the lioness was happy the earthworm did not require a pedicure or a manicure. The elephant was looking for a backpack. She had decided to scale Mount Everest. So what if she weighed a few extra pounds, she wanted to use her strength and make headlines. The horse was of no help for he was drunk. Totally. The cuckoo was sad. She wanted to join the army and they were not hiring any longer. She had spent many hours practicing her salute and building muscles. She went to the hyena who was engaged in worship. He was also a clairvoyant. “Will i ever be able to carry a rifle on my shoulders and march on?” asked the cuckoo. The hyena looked into the crystal ball. The crystal ball was not clear. Smoky, hazy…high pollution…hazardous to look in, it said.At that moment, an early morning walker turned the turtle who had been lying helplessly on her back. Once again on her belly, the turtle exclaimed out of relief, “Ah! Things have come back to normal again.” Sometimes it is our own vision that must be adjusted. Get your perspective right, the world will be right too.

Filmmaker Kyle Smith joins this week to discuss Mike Leigh, the playwright-turned-Palme d'Or-winning writer/director, his 1999 film about Gilbert, Sullivan, and the first production of The Mikado. On this episode we discuss the movie Roger Ebert called “One of the best films ever made about life in the theater,” Leigh's lengthy rehearsal and improvisation process to write the films, how that gives the light effortless feel of “life happening,” and that influence on Smith's filmmaking. Also: How a plotless near-three-hour movie can be so rewatchable, Leigh's early work of filmed plays for the BBC, and how this film in conjunction with Anne Washburn's play Mr. Burns gives a macro view of Gilbert & Sullivan's legacy in human storytelling.Kyle Smith is writer/director of the films Blue Highway and Turkey Bowl, which debuted at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Currently in development on his third feature, you can find Kyle and his film thoughts on Letterboxd.Topsy-Turvy is available in physical media from the Criterion Collection and also to digitally borrow on Hoopla.
