Today's guest is Magnus Walker. Magnus is a fashion designer and owner of one of the largest Porsche collections in the world.  Magnus set his eyes on a white 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo when he was 10 years old in Sheffield, England. He moved to the United States in 1986 and purchased his first Porsche a few years later for $12,000. Magnus threw another $30,000 of modifications into the car and his path as a collector had begun.  He stores and customizes his Porsches in a two-story 26,000 square foot warehouse in Los Angeles. Magnus burst onto the automotive scene in 2012 after the release of the short film, Urban Outlaw, which highlighted Magnus' life collecting and modifying the European classics.  Magnus' passions for Porsches and design have found him working alongside the likes of Nike, the video game Need for Speed, Hot Wheels, and Momo steering wheels. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Urban Outlaw,” the award-winning documentary, Petersen Automotive Museum's executive director, Terry Kargas sits down with Magnus Walker to talk about his exhibit at the museum. Magnus Walker is one of the world's most well-known Porsche builders and collectors. He found fame with his popular clothing brand, Serious, prior to building a career in real estate, cars and filmmaking. His Petersen exhibit included 10 cars and a series of objects personally selected by Walker. Highlights included his iconic red, white, and blue Porsche “277,” his Porsche 993 Art Car, his co-designed Nike SB dunks, and other art and automotive items curated by Walker himself.

Magnus Walker I wanted to get Magnus on the Show early on, as he bridges the gap so perfectly between the pure bred racers that created racing history, and the enthusiasts that provide the support, passion and momentum behind the automotive world. We have been friends for quite a long time now and to see his persona grow from a niche Porsche-phile to a legitimate tastemaker in the car world, has been inspirational to say the least. Still humble and proud of his Sheffield roots, Magnus is so naturally cool that I reckon almost every one of the Porsche owners wish they could be a bit like him. If you read his wonderful book ‘Urban Outlaw' then you will appreciate his unlikely journey to the top VIP table at the most prestigious car events around the world. There is a revised version (just released) of the book which tells of the beautiful love affair and relationship he has forged with his partner, Hannah Elliott. So even if you have the original copy, double down to get the latest scoop. Sitting down with Magnus was such a blast, and we certainly covered some unexpected ground, and our little British balls even got some airtime.  Yup. He comes from the North East of England has been a Design Director, a startup Co-founder, artist and musician.   He started his career working for Mattel as a junior designer, but put that on hold for a few years to pursue music full time with his band, the Kustombuilt.   They had considerable success for a few years and they were destined for great things. The band was a staple on UK radio and they sold out venues across the country. They were, however, unable to secure a substantial record deal due to the bad timing of their emergence (early 2000's i.e. CD/MP3 crossover).   The band broke up and Felix rejoined Mattel in America and eventually became the head of Design for Hotwheels. He did many amazing things at the company and arguably saved the brand from its demise. Senior executives had been made to believe that interest in the toy icon had waned and they felt that it was no longer viable to carry on. Felix, along with a couple of colleagues, architected a strategy to reinvigorate public interest. They did this through a series of full-size vehicle builds and coupled this with world-record breaking stunts in front of monster crowds estimated to be in the region of 300k! Needless to say, it worked out pretty well.   It was through these events that Felix met his business partner-to-be, a former stunt-driver, turned movie director, Mouse McCoy. Together founded Hackrod, a Digital manufacturing company redefining the way vehicles are designed, through the use of AI/Machine Learning. This was a truly innovative venture at the time of its inception and their quest to 'democratise design' was also a great success.   Felix is also an accomplished Artist in his own right. He has fused his graffiti influences with the craft of traditional methods to realise his distinctive punchy style. He has also recently painted a Porsche 914 exterior with the official Urban Outlaw, Magnus Walker.   Felix has lived many versions of himself and that is what makes him so interesting. He has pursued all of his intrigues successfully. It worked out pretty good for him. Almost by accident, he started Serious Clothing and his stuff was worn by the likes of Madonna, Bruce Willis, and Alice Cooper.   He has loved Porsche's since he was a kid and started collecting and restoring vintage Porsche 911s. He was in a short film, Urban Outlaw, that was a big hit at the 2012 Raindance Film Festival. His newfound fame led to Porsche asking him to work for them 35 years after he applied to work there when he was 10. Magnus also wrote an autobiography - Urban Outlaw: Dirt Don't Slow You Down, about his rise and fall in the fashion industry. His TEDx UCLA talk is great.   In this episode we talk about how to be adaptive in a complex world, be open to options, and master your perspective not your plan. Magnus Walker’s love affair with Porsche began when he was 10 years old during a trip to the 1977 London Motor Show. In 1986 at the age of 19 he moved to Los Angeles and started his own line of clothing. That led to the acquisition of a warehouse in downtown L.A., his first Porsche, club racing, and an ever-expanding collection of vintage Porsches that he often customized in an outlaw style. His builds started gaining attention and when he produced the video Urban Outlaw things really started to accelerate. Magnus is not your stereotypical Porsche owner and there’s nothing typical about Magnus. He has an online Urban Outlaw store, a blog, a website, videos, he’s been a speaker on Ted Talks, and he travels all over the world driving Porsches and expanding his reach to fans everywhere. Alex Ross is the founder of Sharkwerks, a company that is arguably the best tuner of GT-series Porsches in America right now. He is dedicated to taking Porsche's good work and cranking it past 11 without regard for cost or common sense. In that vein, Alex brought the exquisite Sharkwerks Cayman GT4 by the museum for Kyle and James to drool over. Magnus Walker is best known as the Urban Outlaw, a bearded and be-dreadlocked builder of air-cooled hot rod 911s. He has become an ambassador for the brand over the past few years and he's a regular feature at all the best Porsche events all over the world. He brought down his newest ride, a super customized Porsche 964 with all kinds of Magnus' personal styling touches.Together they sat down with Kyle and James to talk about the North/South divide in England, the air and water cooled divide in the Porsche community, and why Sharkwerks doesn't really have a business model. This was a super fun conversation, and we know you guys will love it.

In part 2 of 2 I continue speaking with Tamir Moscovici. In this episode we really focus in on the making of Tamir's films, and spend a considerable amount of time on Urban Outlaw. We also chat about another one of his great feature length films after Urban Outlaw, Kaz. This is certainly one of the highlights of my short time building The Bucket Seat, it was truly an honour and a privlage to having Tamir on the show. Enjoy!

Tamir has traveled around the world shooting many different subject matters but it’s his automotive shoots that brings him to Cars Yeah. Nicholas Simcik Arese, University of Oxford, gives a talk for the Arrival Cities COMPAS Seminar Series. As activists lament that the rights-based aims of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution feel increasingly distant, research is necessary on the documentation of ongoing social-justice struggles in Cairo, though they may not be framed as 'revolutionary' by participants themselves. In August 2010 and in February 2011, during the 18 days of Hosni Mubarak’s fall, a group of 231 resettled slum dwellers from the Duweiqa district of Cairo, abandoned their 23 square-meter allocated homes to squat live-able larger ones in Haram City, a budget gated community marketed by developers and development practitioners alike as a new best-practice "cooperative" public-private partnerships for low-income housing. In this forced 'arrival city', squatters leverage their foothold on vast expanses of empty houses to negotiate a return home. This paper traces their metaphorical use of rights-based language – aligning notions of moral 'rootedness' in property and place, outlaw discourse, and brokerage practices – outside of dominant legal and revolutionary norms, towards survival..

Magnus Walker’s love affair with Porsche began when he was 10 years old during a trip to the 1977 London Motor Show. He wrote to the Porsche factory and their response was, “Give us a call when you are older.” He did, but more about that later. In 1986 at the age of 19 he moved to Los Angeles and started his own line of clothing. That led to the acquisition of a warehouse in L.A., his firs Porsche, club racing and an ever-expanding collection of vintage Porsches. His builds started gaining attention and when he produced the video Urban Outlaw things really started to accelerate. Magnus is not your stereotypical Porsche owner and there’s nothing typical about Magnus. You never know where he will be next.
