Here I am between James Brooks the Long Island artist who in 1940-42 painted a huge mural titled, “Flight” affixed on Belgian Linen on the upper walls of The Marine Air Terminal (MAT) at LaGuardia Airport and Laurance Rockefeller who put up the money to save the mural after he learned it was painted out of sight (read on) in 1952.Once upon a time I was hell bent for leather working with my air cargo publication Air Cargo News in 1979 to save The Marine Air Terminal (MAT) at LGA, home base in New York City to Fixed Base Operator (FBO) Butler Aviation, today's Signature Aviation. The manager of Butler was Vince Costanza and I, as a struggling publisher, was in a kind of kinship with him to save the place by restoring the WPA Mural painted by James Brooks in 1942.Mural was painted over in 1952 by some McCarthy era lunatics from The Port Authority who thought artist Brooks was a communist. But I found the artist and told him if he gave me photographs of the panels of his 237 feet circular X 12 feet high mural titled “Flight,” I would build a floor display in the lobby outside the door of the Butler Aviation FBO, where during the late 1970s at MAT, all the New York City high rollers had a private airplanes at LGA Well Vince and the Airport Manager Tim Peirce (dear hearts) gave consent and support so I built the display.I needed sponsors and always could lean on Vince who would grin and say something like:“Yeah, I can help, we are pumping Kero like crazy.”Last I heard, Vince was selling Bibles in Massachusetts.Of course, the Port Authority here has never spoken to me again! But at the mural restoration/celebration sit down dinner, I arranged in 1980 for all the art colony big wigs to be there, including William Lieberman, Director of Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art and many others. At that party Laurance Rockefeller walked over and said to me very quietly:“I'd like to stand next to you . . . I know what you did here.“I saw your display one day when I was travelling with my friend Dewitt Wallace,” (founder of Reader's Digest).Of course, before I could say something stupid like ‘knock yourself out,' he said, “call me Laurance.”He then continued, “When my brother Nelson was Governor of New York State, he hired Jim to paint a mural for Empire State Plaza.“We checked him thoroughly.“He was no Communist!”Shortly after the party, I received a hand signed picture from “Call me Laurance” with himself taking tea with me at the party.Good to have low friends in high places!

In Part 2 of Episode 60, I close out 2024 and Season 11 with two of my favorite people, John Inman and Matthew Laurance. John is always a blast to talk to, and his stories from his playing days on Tour to his time as the Head Men's Golf Coach at the University of North Carolina are nothing short of fantastic. We dive into the impact of the changes coming to NIL deals plus roster changes in college sports. Then we get into, all the PGA Tour's newly approved adjustments to field sizes and the number of available Tour cards starting in 2026. I also get John's thoughts on his brother Joe becoming an Advisor to the PGA Tour Policy Board. Several of Joe's peers have told me he'd make a great Tour Commissioner, and while he once dismissed the idea as more hassle than it's worth, perhaps he's had a change of heart—I sure hope so. You can follow John on X/Twitter @audubonjohn62 To wrap up this season, I'll be joined by my good friend Matthew Laurance for another of our always lively conversations. We touch on the same NIL and PGA Tour changes, discuss his thoughts on the TGL League, and share some incredible celebrity golf stories that are guaranteed to make you laugh—I know I did! Be sure to follow Matthew on X/Twitter @reallauro5 and stay tuned in March when his show, Backspin Golf, returns to WLXG.com, ESPN Radio in Lexington, Kentucky which you can stream online or on the WLXG app.

Episode produced by Whistler Brown, Lauren Daniels, Michael Homsi, and Flaka Zahiri. On this episode of Sync into the Earth, the hosts discuss the ongoing struggle to strike a balance between infrastructural development and environmental protection, considering the proposed Ontario Highway 413 as an exemplary case of this struggle. They are joined by Dr. Ryan Norris from the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph to discuss these issues, and to shed some light on the current and future direction of conservation science within this scope. Ryan also shares his thoughts on some of the current research being conducted in relation to Highway 413, and how this could impact future policies, actions, and motivations. The hosts then follow the interview with a round-table style discussion, discussing some of the ongoing research relating to Highway 413, and more generally speaking, conservation science in Ontario. Topics relating to social sustainability, economics, wildlife management, forestry, and human health are explored, all tying back to the main theme of infrastructural development co-existing with adequate environmental protection and conservation measures. Many golf courses won't recover because bermuda grass can't tolerate the salt water dumped on them from the surge. Local PGA Professionals are looking at a very difficult Winter season without golf courses to teach on.  Matthew Laurance starred in the movie Eddie & the Cruisers. Hal Sutton and I started out by talking about his new golf course design project. We also hear which designers have influenced him. I asked Hal about the burden of expectation placed on him as a young player and what he would say to Tom Kim to help him deal with that. Hal joined my guest from last week, Tony Ruggiero, on Tony's podcast Tour Coach and they had one of the most important golf conversations that I've heard in a long time. We recap that conversation which included focusing on our bad shots instead of our good ones and how some players place blame on everybody else instead of taking responsibility for their own golf games when things go wrong. Ross Greenburg has won over 100 major television awards over the course of his career. We talk about the movie he did along with Billy Crystal titled "61" about the 1961 homerun record chase between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. We also talk about 3 other films he's done: "Extra Innings From 9/11...20 Years Later", the Disney movie "Miracle" about the 1980 US Hockey Team, and "Jack Nicklaus, Making of a Champion."

This month on Mutual Exchange Radio, we are joined by Eric Fleischmann, leading an informative and inspiring conversation about their comprehensive Laurance Labadie archival project, Labadie's special relevance for the market anarchist tradition, their study on Historical Materialism and more. Eric Fleischmann (he/they) is an undergrad student working in the solidarity economy and pursuing a double major in anthropology and philosophy. He is an anarchist indebted to communistic and continental thought but engaged primarily in the traditions of mutualism, North American individualist anarchism, and modern left-libertarianism. He has been involved in various capacities with numerous leftist, left-leaning, and labor-oriented organizations—generally ones which promote forms of politico-economic decentralization and democratization and/or degrees of left unity (Center for a Stateless Society, Industrial Workers of the World, Union of Musicians and Allied Workers, Resource Generation, and his college's Leftist Coalition). He has also played in and currently plays in several punk, hardcore, and alternative bands (Soy., Consumerist, Manbitesdog, and Nope) and has released multiple albums.

Lizzy Laurence is a London based sound artist who creates music inspired by spatial locations. She stiches together 'found' music and ambient sound to create her tracks.  In today's episode I chat with Lizzy about her debut album Rocketman (I know what you are thinking, but no - it is very different!) the album was created while she was an artist in residence aboard Illutron, an old dredging boat in Copenhagen which has links to the murder of journalist Kim Wall. In my conversation with Lizzy I find out what got her interested in creating music inspired by place, the story of Illutron & Kim Walls murder, and finally, Lizzy's creative process while creating Rocketman, and her music in general.  For more on Lizzy follow the links below:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lizzy_laurance/   Bandcamp: https://lizzylaurance.bandcamp.com/album/rocketman   Website: https://lizzylaurance.wixsite.com/mysite   (Recorded April 2022)

I spoke with Laurence Bradford. Laurence had a very unique start into coding. She decided to leave her career behind around 2014. Back then she just googled "High paying jobs, no college needed". Guess what came up? Web development! She then started to teach herself how to code via courses and free resources on the web. To help her stay accountable to the learning process, she started to blog. Soon after that, she was able to start freelancing and even got a part-time job. Then her blog started to resonate with people that were also in the same journey: trying to learn how to code. She started to test different revenue models and today her business orbits around her site - Learn To Code With Me where she has sponsorships, promotes products via affiliate marketing and she sells product bundles too. Laurence is laser focused. She has a very good understanding of the troubles that a beginner coder has to go through and she has decided to keep helping them. Listen to this conversation to see how you can start to build a name for yourself, by just sharing what you are learning, as Laurance did. Full show notes and links: https://SoloCoder.com/45
