VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/8gw6K9OLw_A ABOUT WOJTEK: Wojtek is a Car Designer that has, without doubt, forged his own style. His sketches are instantly recognisable and have become synonymous with KISKA. His creativity and ideas are endless and his attention to detail borders on insanity. Wojtek's background is unlike anything I've ever heard before. It includes fleeing communist Poland, his mother saving money in Syria to take the family to America and a late career change into Car Design. I heard a lot about Wojtek from various people and hanging with him was inspiring to say the least. He is so unbelievably humble, but what's fascinating about him is the marriage of scientific pragmatism and boundless creativity. He's not tethered by logic. An incredible guy with one hell of a story! Filmed on location at KISKA. If you watch closely, you might see the top dog casually walking through the set mid-interview. VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/pxmHV8T7Igo ABOUT ALFONSO: Let me just say that this episode was packed with anecdotal surprises that I never could have anticipated. Alfonso Albaisa is the Senior Vice President for Global Design for Nissan, but he is also the son of immigrants that fled horrific circumstances in Cuba after the Bay of Pigs Invasion. His parents arrived in the U.S. penniless after bribing their way out of Cuba. His father, a qualified architect, worked odd jobs to make ends meet and eventually established his own architectural firm. This was done within 8 years of their arrival and within that time, he designed the house of President Nixon. Alfonso was born in Miami and grew up in idyllic Coconut Grove where spent a free and feral childhood surrounded by water, sun, and art. He was deeply inspired by his father and was fed Michelangelo books by his mother, both of whom nurtured his artistic side. By the time he finished school he was enamored with Car Design, but opted to study Fine Art at Pratt Institute in New York. He immersed himself in the program as well as the Dance Music scene in the City, which he described as theatrical. Halfway through his studies, his mom called him to say that she had found a school in Detroit where he could study Car Design and she encouraged him to go. Albaisa transferred to CCS for a year, where he lived in a dorm with kids that he says were eating and breathing cars. There he developed an impressive ability to draw, which he took with him back to New York. ‘I was always working. In fact, I was Mr. All-nighter. I was making helicopters for the guy in Detroit, furniture for my teachers, and flashlights for the Koreans. I would do this till 2 or 3 AM and then go to ‘Save the Robots' (underground after-hours club in New York City's East Village neighborhood), come back at 9 AM, and go to school. Sleep at lunch.' *laughs Alfonso appeared to have made the decision to pursue Fine Art in an almost wispy fashion without much concern about where it would lead. When prompted on this, he said that he had the best parents in the world in that they never put the weight of their sacrifices and traumatic past on his shoulders when deciding what to do with his future. ‘I had all this context (referring to his parents and his environment) and so it was easy to imagine that when you're making things and working hard, some way things will work out.' Needless to say, it more than worked out! VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/s97AsZzq_Bg ABOUT MARCELLO: Marcello is a motorcycle designer at KISKA and might be one of the coolest Italian dudes I have met. He shared a beautiful childhood story about a local bike track that his parents took him to as a young boy. It was a hot summer's day in the scorching Italian sun and 2 young guys came into focus as they pierced through a mirage on a pair of vintage bikes. The young Basilio became intoxicated with the noise, smell, speed, and, of course, the sculpture, and nearly 2 decades later, he would be designing these beautiful machines. Landing the job at KISKA was a dream come true, but the Italian quickly pointed out that getting his dream job was not without its setbacks. He went through the application/rejection cycle multiple times over the course of a couple of years and was also let go early from an internship that really knocked his confidence. Marcello decided to return to education in order to brush up on his skills and enrolled at SPD Milano where the mighty Michele Leonello put him through his paces. Upon graduation, he landed a job at Benelli as a junior designer where he gained invaluable experience. It was also here, in Pesaro, where he met his future wife, and this gave him confidence in the universe again. Marcello still had a burning desire, though, to get to Salzburg and after a series of attempts, the doors at KISKA were eventually pried open. A powerful story that can be summed up in one word...resilience. He studied at Coventry as well as the RCA, graduating with a monster group of designers that include Pratap Bose, Robert Melville, Chloe Nunn (formerly Edwards) and Ben Payne. Matt was the head of Exteriors at Tata, before making the pilgrimage to China where he was the Director of Exterior Design for Haval. Prior to that he worked for LandRover, Lotus (He designed the 2010 Elise Concept) and Ford. He has recently returned to the UK and is the Vehicle Design Director at Project 3, a mobility startup backed by Rimac, KIA and Infinum. They have vowed to completely redefine Urban Mobility, but not much else can be said at this stage. VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/3QWfkVKMGEo FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ ABOUT GERALD: We've all heard the legend of how Gerald Kiska started a company on his kitchen table and while these things tend to be romanticised, that is actually what happened. For 6 years after graduating he worked for various companies and through a chance meeting with a friend, a proposition of establishing himself independently was presented. He discussed the prospect with his wife and he quickly found himself without a kitchen and more work than he could personally manage. Gerald roped in two friends to help him out and was soon confronted with another opportunity to move into a much larger space than he needed. Reluctant, Gerald and his friends moved in after a unique arrangement with the former occupants and they ended up staying rent-free for two years. Needless to say, his wife was happy to have her kitchen back! Through an old contact, Gerald became privy to a competition for an exclusive contract with KTM. Gerald won the competition and things were off to a fantastic start, except that a year into the contract there were cashflow concerns as the motorcycle OEM was on the brink of bankruptcy. Around this time Gerald was introduced to an Austrian businessman named Stefan Pierer who needed help to improve the design of a unique ski binding patent that he had acquired. The business intentions for the ski-binding patent did not go according to plan for Pierer, but a wonderful working relationship had been established between the two Austrians. Sharing his frustration with Gerald in a Munich beer garden, the business magnate also then came to learn of the situation with KTM. A few weeks later, unexpectedly, Gerald received a call from Stefan saying that he could not stop thinking about their conversation and that he was, in fact, interested in acquiring the motorcycle brand. After a few months, this materialised and would be the start of one of the most unique Agency/OEM relationships. It would also be the genesis of KISKA as we know it today. Gerald, along with his team, has grown KISKA into a global Design Agency that does everything from branding to product development and across multiple sectors. There are many companies that present themselves as a ‘one-stop shop' or a ‘we can design anything design house', but KISKA does this at the very highest level, regardless of the project they undertake. The company is unlike anything I have experienced before. From the minute you enter the building you are confronted with motorcycles, skis, cars, SUP's, microphones, bicycles, apparel, trainers and the list goes on. There is a hive of activity in the studio that will captivate anyone remotely interested in design. More importantly, though, the energy and warmth of the people is an infectious allure that let's go of very few. When you spend anything more than 10 minutes with Gerald, it's obvious where all of that comes from. He is a leader in the very truest sense and his business is unique because he is. Very few creatives, let alone designers, are capable of establishing and growing a business into one like Gerald has, especially when you consider that Salzburg is hardly the Automotive capital of the world. He is modest about it, but very earnest and transparent in how this all happened. The first factor is courage and the second is the ability to zoom out, see the bigger picture and trust the people that you have hired to bring your vision to life. That is leadership. VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/YGCkJZH1iMw FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ ABOUT LUKE: This young man has been on my radar for the last couple of years and after speaking with him I felt it was absolutely imperative to have him on the show, particularly for other graduates who are finishing up their courses. Luke and his year were the first casualties of the ‘we're not hiring because of this virus' period, and things felt desolate. Around this time (Augustish 2020 I think?) his name started popping up a lot online, particularly on Linkedin. He was working aggressively on his portfolio but also building a network in a meaningful and thoughtful manner. It was all to do with adding value and contributing to the narrative, especially on other peoples posts. This was without spamming and going ‘look at my portfolio' in the process. He put his work out in an elegant manner and did so consistently, and in doing so, created intrigue. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with the ask, but don't expect people to respond if your first interaction is: "Hey bro" or dropping a ton of images in someone's inbox uncontextually (is this even a word?). The point is that you should add value first. Moving on: Lukes approach was a class act display on how to navigate a very trying time when you so desperately need to pry open the doors of employment. A very smart guy, obviously, Luke decided halfway through his course that it would make sense to pivot into motorcycles, given that the market is 'slightly' flooded with Car Design graduates. He took inspiration from some of the great motorcycle designers such as Pierre Terblanche and Adrian Morton, and changed lanes. Luke honed his skills in sketching 2 wheels and won a Royal Enfield competition around the time of finishing Uni. This and his thoughtful interactions online got the attention of many and he eventually landed a job with probably the most exciting EV bike startup in the UK, Arc Vehicles. Anyway, this one is for all grads out there that are feeling despondent and concerned about their future – this is how to do it! VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/ocYsMVy_KMw FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ ABOUT PATRICK: What could possibly be said about this great man that has not already been said? He helped save Renault from the brink of bankruptcy, designers in his team have gone on to be world-class Design Directors, he has authored multiple books, co-founded a Sustainable Design School, produced countless award-winning designs, and made it law in his studios to respond to every letter that young aspiring designers send in, regardless of their skill level. Patrick was never afraid to destroy the rulebook and on more than one occasion, he hired designers that did not meet 'company requirements' with regard to qualifications. If he saw something in you, he would give you a shot, even if there was a hiring freeze. He is also responsible for changing the hierarchical structure throughout the Automotive business. Prior to Patrick joining Renault, Design was a subsidiary of Engineering and the Design Director would, therefore, report to the head of Engineering. One of the conditions of accepting the role was that Patrick would be given the resources to establish Design as its own department and he, as Design Director, would report to the CEO and nobody else. This paradigm shift set a new precedent in the industry and many OEMs followed suit. His achievements as a design leader are unparalleled, but when you speak with him, something that really hits home (especially if you are aware of his career) is his humility. A former guest of mine, Michael Barthly, shared an anecdote about Patrick visiting him in his student halls and eating a grubby student meal with him and his friends after giving a lecture at ISD. No fancy restaurants or fine wine – Patrick slummed it with the kids! He is a gentleman and anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting him will know exactly what I am talking about. He considers himself lucky and is known affectionately as 'Luckyman'. I would say that this industry is lucky, though; lucky to have benefitted so much from this great person and his legacy. Thank you, Patrick. You, too, are my hero. P.S. I forgot to mention that he also has designed in excess of 30 boats since he 'retired'. ==================================================== ABOUT ME: I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered. Here he has established a team of Car Designers, Aerospace Engineers, and people that put their all into making exquisite pieces of art that take the form of a key. Each key is researched to have its very own story distilled into something so beautiful and tactile that you won't want to put it down. Some have been CNC'd and some use the latest 3d printing technology, but every single piece is finished off by hand and the results are breath-taking. Craftsmanship and story-telling seem to be key (excuse the pun) touch-stones in the Forma philosophy and I can't wait to have one commissioned for that 911 I have been fantasizing about. He is an absolute master of his craft and ‘prolific' does not even begin to describe the insane rate at which he produces work. It feels like he uploads work daily and it's no surprise that he has amassed an insane following online. A fascinating fact about Chris is that he is self-taught and that makes him even more intriguing. He is clearly a very disciplined artist, but seems to have strict rules when it comes to enjoying his surroundings in Southern California. Work is important, but even more so, is getting outside on his Svartpilen or blasting his 348 through the canyons. Last, but not least, he is a serial podcast guest and is a total natural and a delight to speak. So friendly and so generous with his time. This is a masterclass in independence! He was responsible for the reimagination of the iconic Phantom after BMW acquired the Rolls-Royce. Influence of his work is still evident in the design DNA of their latest cars - it is very difficult to look at the MK7 Phantom and other cars of that period that he designed, such as the 100EX, and say that they could have been improved. These were nothing less than exquisite. Since leaving the BMW Group, Marek has been a fully independent designer and continues to pursue excellence at the highest order. Jordan was a key member of the design team that did the 2015 Ford Mustang. Prior to this, he was a Design Manager at Mazda in California during an insane period in the mid to late 2000's where the brand was producing by far the coolest concepts in the industry. These included the Furai, Taiki, and Nagare. Jordan's team produced the latter. Prior to this, Jordan was a team leader at VW's Advanced Design Center in Potsdam. This was in the studio's legendary heyday where you would find people like Daniel Simon, Christian Felske, Achim Anscheidt, and, for a brief period, Anders Warming, walking the halls. As a designer, Jordan was one of the pioneers in developing complete volumes in Alias. It has become commonplace now, but it certainly was not standard practice then. To the best of my knowledge, there were only a couple of people in the world doing this at the time and he had a profound influence on many designers. Jordan's thinking is incredibly unique and there are many reasons for this, including his origins at the Rhode Island School of Design. He also did a brief stint at CCS and eventually went on to do the Vehicle Design program at the Royal College of Art. Last, but not least, Jordan is a faculty member of the prestigious Art Center in California and has also published a book titled: ‘Vehicle Design: Aesthetic Principles in Transportation Design', which can be found on Amazon (This is not a paid partnership, promise!!!

By this stage of life, he had already developed an obsession that drove him to sketch them obsessively. As luck would have it, he stumbled upon an article on Renault Design and his 7-year-old mind was blown. Among all the cool sketches and models, was a photo of Patrick Le Quément. Michael took the article to his father and educated him on who this great man was, but more importantly, that he had to send his sketches to him. Michael also told his dad that he knew that he might not get a response, but it was important that he at least tried...you will have to listen to the episode to see how the story unfolded, but it was the start of the most unlikely of friendships that is still very much alive and you could say that it was the unofficial start of his career. The story moved me to tears. Years later, Michael would work on the Exterior of the uber cool Kia Proceed Concept during his internship and after returning to his studies at ISD Rubika, the Korean giant made sure that Michael returned as a permanent fixture. He has now moved to Cologne and working happily as a Senior Exterior Designer at Ford. Recently, Michael re-envisioned the iconic RS200 as part of a book containing a selection of the blue ovals skunkworks. The brief, set by the Head of Design at Ford, Amko Leenarts, was for the team to submit their vision for how a modern, all-electric RS200 could look. Find out more here: https://www.stevesaxty.com/reimaginedrs200 As mentioned at the start of this episode, it is a rarity that you encounter young designers with the emotional intelligence that matches, if not surpasses, the creative talent needed to succeed as a designer. The kind of emotional intelligence that is an indicator of a future leader. There have only been two such examples that I have encountered and Michael is one of them. This guy is only getting started! A special thank you to Amko Leenarts and Ford for allowing Michael Barthly to do the podcast and speak freely. As a result, a great conversation unfolded. Sam is one of the founders of Car Design News, was the Director and was largely responsible for tripling its revenue before the company was sold to a media producer. CDR has established itself as the gold standard in Research and Strategy in the Car Design world. They have worked with virtually every OEM that comes to mind, but probably most well-known for helping Thomas Ingenlath establish his vision for Volvo when he took over the brand more than a decade ago. At the age of 14, Scott finished sixth in the world at the annual race in Akron, Ohio. In 1984 he attended Oregon State University. He graduated with honors with a B.S. degree in Transportation Design in April 1990. The day after graduation, Scott opened a product design consulting firm in San Francisco with friend Neville Page. Soon they were designing a variety of consumer products, the majority being durable medical goods and sporting goods. Clients included Everest-Jennings, Kestrel, Giro Sport Design, Nissan, Volvo, Yamaha, Scott USA, and Schwinn. In 1995, both Scott and Neville relocated to Vevey, Switzerland to teach drawing and industrial design at Art Center, Europe. These include Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Jeep, Lancia, and Maserati. I would suggest that you go and watch the first series of 'Abstract' on Netflix. It is a series that I keep referring to and I profess to have watched it almost as many times as 'Stepbrothers.' It has had a profound impact on me and the reason that I am going on about it is that Ralph has casually got an episode dedicated solely to him and his work. I have to admit that I was not completely cool in this talk with him. I was fangirling a little, and probably too aware of how insanely valuable his time is. Needless to say, he was incredibly kind and full of wisdom on so many levels. Ralph is an incredible leader that has achieved insane levels of success in, quite literally, record time, and all in the face of adversity. It also needs to be said that you would be hard-pushed to find anyone with a negative word to say about him. Ralph has been vocal in his advocacy of teamwork and he knows that empowering his people results in everyone rising together. I can't really say much else - Ralph is a total anomaly. Thank you, Ralph! Video version of this: https://youtu.be/ylAR7bklxvY ABOUT FABIO: Fabio Filippini is the Former Design Director of Pininfarina and before that, the Vice President of Interior Design for Renault. I cannot reel off the endless list of this man's accolades, but I will say that he has been responsible for some of my favorite Concept Cars over the last 10 years ( Pininfarina H2 Speed, BMW Pininfarina GranLusso Coupe, Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo and, of course, the Pininfarina Sergio Concept). Fabio is one of those leaders that transcend every proverbial box that we love to put Designers into. He has not only designed exteriors and interiors, but he is also a very successful Product Designer, Brand Strategist and with his beautiful book, Curve, he can now add Author to that list. He has successfully navigated every type of design environment from large OEM's to small boutique Design Houses and is now running his own Creative Consultancy in his adoptive home of Tokyo. He speaks 5 languages and I think it's safe to say that he is pretty fluent in the language of Design. Fabio's brilliance is immediately apparent when you talk to him and it comes across so effortlessly. He has nothing to prove and his down-to-earth demeanor might take you by surprise. After attending the University of Wisconsin and graduating from the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California), Bangle began his career at Opel in 1981, and then 4 years later moved on to Fiat, where he designed the brazen Coupe Fiat. In 1992, he was named the first American Chief of Design at BMW. His mandate to "strategize emotion" through design has energized the typically conservative brand, updating BMW's classic design with bold, sculptural lines, a far cry from homogenous car design. As a result, his daring designs have helped BMW become the global leader in premium car sales and brought in legions of new fans, spurring rivals to follow suit in emulating this distinctive style. After leaving BMW in February 2009, he founded Chris Bangle Associates s.r.l. (CBA) at a centuries old Borgata in the hills above Clavesana - a famed center for wine in the Piemonte Region of Italy. Today, as the managing Director of CBA, Chris Bangle leads a team of designers and engineers, who, together with the Associates from the CBA clients, use the Borgata as a hybrid Studio/Design Residency. The open spaces and beautiful vineyards around the Borgata encourage the imagination. One of his most recent projects - REDS – is a new kind of EV developed for CHTC (China Hi-Tech Group Corporation), and it introduces a new visual language for cars. After the launch at Los Angeles Motors show in November 2017, REDS is now being developed for production. With REDS Chris Bangle has taken a revolutionary approach to car design by beginning the process from the inside so that the interior of the car is a wonderful place to live, work and play. As Chris says, he has “designed a space that decided to become a car". In addition to the studio's activities devoted to product and car design, workshops and strategic consultancy, CBA has developed in the last five years a branch dedicated to animation and cartoons. The experiences in design and innovation and the advice Bangle has to offer after over 25 years as a manager make him a speaker in demand; he travels frequently around the world to lecture, teach design, and consult with his Client Associates. He is married and has a son. Chris Bangle is the winner of the Lifetime Design Achievement Award EyesOn Design 2012, the Compasso d'Oro Career Award 2018 and of the American Prize for Design 2020-21. ==================================================== ABOUT ME: I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered. I was kindly introduced to Luciano last year by Michele Leonello and I instantly warmed to him. You cannot help but smile every time you talk with the Italian and his energy is infectious. Luciano moved to California at the age of 19 to learn English and work on his academic grades to make it into the prestigious Art Center in Pasadena. Upon graduation, he went to work under the one and only Chris Bangle, at Fiat, and a few years later joined Renault, where he still works today as an R&D Design Manager. Most notably, Luciano's key projects in his 25-year career include the Fiat Seicento, Renault Kangoo 2 and the Renault EV Twizy City Car. Many of you will know Adrian as being the former Design Director of MV Agusta or for his super cool start-up, C-Creative. What many of you don't know is that Adrian was never destined for any of this… His father was a lorry driver and his mother worked in a supermarket and like most parents, they wanted the best for their son. The world of design was alien to them, but they believed in Adrian's passion and work ethic, and so they made some risky sacrifices to elevate his chances of becoming a designer. It goes without saying that Adrian realised, to his core, that giving anything less than 110 percent would not be enough to ensure success. He made his own sacrifices, put in the work and along the way, strangers contributed and helped at the least expected times. This conversation has countless lessons for anyone with dreams and aspirations that think they weren't born into the right circumstances or don't have the right connections to be successful. It is also for anyone that thinks that they weren't born with the 'gift' of talent. There are no shortcuts, and connections will only get you so far. FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/7A4iM54u6LA ABOUT MIKE: Mike is a Senior Designer working for David Gordon Design LTD. He has worked professionally for over 25 years, designing everything from cars to trains, motorcycles to land speed record cars, mobile phones as well as construction machines. He has spent the past 3-4 years developing digital concepts in his spare time - largely inspired by iconic road and race cars from his youth. Recently, Mike began experimenting with an altogether more extreme modelling and visualisation technique – exploring the idea of reducing well known classic cars down to their most basic form, yet still ensuring their unique character remains recognisable. Inspired by the low-res video game graphics of his youth, Mike's vehicles are reduced, simplified and abstracted - so that only a series of faceted polygon surfaces remain. Mike pushes hard whilst shaping his digital creations - to see how minimal he dare go without losing the spirit and key features of the original design. It's a careful balancing act – but each is still recognisable, despite being a fraction of the original in terms of surface complexity and polygon count. In Mike's images you still recognize the essence of a Ferrari GTO, Lamborghini Countach or LandRover Defender at first glance. Mike's new artwork style has drawn interest on Social Media, and as a result an initial collection of 10 cars were very quickly snapped up as exclusive NFT's via Mike's fledgling brand Crypto-Carz. In addition to the above, Mike talked about his time in Potsdam and what it was like during its heyday. He also covered extensively his time at JCB, including the dissatisfaction he felt as the Head of Design. Last, but certainly not least, he spoke openly about struggles with mental health and the priority he now places on his well-being. Mike is still happily employed at David Gordon Limited and every time I speak to him he can't shut up about how great the company is. You should probably go and check them out - links below! Whilst at Jaguar Landrover. he made the transition from his role as an Interior Designer and eventually left the company to join Geely UK as its Director of UX/UI. Like many other UX Designers, he took inspiration from companies like Apple and the emotional connection that they have built between users and their products through User Experience. Rob very eloquently gave countless examples of innovation in UX/UI that transcend menu graphics. We talked about lighting, sound, smell and touch. We also went off on a tangent into Vehicle Electrification and the complexities that surround this great revolution. There is a reason why every single Car Company on the planet is hiring UX Designers hand over fist and that's because Cars are morphing into devices, devices that not only require intuitive control, but also exceptional experiences. That is something that can not simply be shoe-horned into a TFT monitor. It requires thought from the very beginning of a product/vehicle's inception. This was a very compelling discussion and it debunked so much about an area of Car Design that is so misunderstood. FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/DgL0G6FDIi8 ABOUT STEPHANE: For those that are unaware, Stephane Janin is a French Car Designer that has been at Renault for best part of his 24 year career. The French native had a mixed education which consisted of Graphic, Industrial as well as Transportation Design. This might have something to do with his very logical surface ‘roadmap' in his sketches. Stephane has been hailed by many as one of the greatest designers of our time and it's clear when you speak with him, how much he has going on in his head. Although he has been designing cars for more than two decades, it is clear that he is as passionate today as he was when he started. It is a very rare thing for someone at Director level to be sketching and creating on a daily basis in a way that he is. He feels that many of his contemporaries become lazy in their role as managers and directors and fall into the trap of merely cherry-picking designs from their teams. Stephane is the anti-thesis of this and continues to inspire not only his team, but everyone in the Car Design Community on a daily basis. Spot one of his sketches online and you can tell immediately that this is the work of Stephane Janin. Stephan is not only an exceptional practitioner of his craft, but an incredible mind infused with inspiration from all sorts of disciplines, from Fashion to Architecture. If I am honest, it's the first car of theirs, bar the Gran Turismo Vision GT, that I could appreciate. It became clear within minutes of talking to Dan, that he is not your average Car Designer, whatever that may be. He draws inspiration from places that most deem too abstract. Places like 'smell', for example. The tangents in this chat were so far that I thought we would never make it back, but somehow Dan managed to land it back every time. I can't really say much else, except that my mind is warped! He has not had an easy ride to get to where he currently is. His parents took the family on a 'holiday' to LA from Taiwan when he was 7. After a failed business venture in America, his father returned to Taiwan, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings on her own in Los Angeles. Tony shoe-horned his way into a graphic design job after high school without any training and spent all his wages on night school at Art Center. His mother re-mortgaged the family home to raise funds for him to study Art Center, only for him to fail the entrance exam. It would take 2 more attempts before everything fell into place. Tony's credibility as a designer is unquestionable, but his emotional intelligence and character are something that makes him truly special. I absolutely love Swaroop's sketches and they stand out from most of the stuff that I see online. He has absolutely mastered the art of drawing. This is evident not only in his Car sketches, but also his portraits, landscapes, engine studies etc. Swaroop can draw anything with accuracy, but more importantly, soul! When prompted on the origins of this apparent gift, he credits his father with instilling dedication his artistic craft from a young age. Swaroop has been an obsessive cricket fan from a very early age. Before he was allowed out to play with his friends, he was tasked with doing at least 10 sketches before being allowed out. This has grown into a daily habit and he can absolutely not function if he hasn't put pen to paper at least once during his waking hours. Swaroop is a Senior Designer working for Renault. Pierre's audio quality was, unfortunately, not great due to microphone issues, but his endless stories and insights transcend this. Anyone that is a fan will be in for a treat! ABOUT PIERRE: Pierre started out as a Car Designer at Volkswagen's now-defunct Advanced Design Studio in Dusseldorf. He was hired by the legendary Patrick Le Quément after showing up at the studio unannounced during a short trip Europe to meet Giorgetto Giugiaro. Pierre did his Masters in Vehicle Design at the RCA and after a series of Golf and Polo interior projects, he left Car Design to follow his true calling, which was motorcycles. He joined Ducati and worked with another legend, Massimo Tamburini, and eventually went on to become the Director of Design. Pierre has become a legend in his own right and has created some icons of his own, including the MH900e, Supermono as well as the controversial 999. There are no airs and graces with Pierre - he tells it exactly how it is. He achieved great things by transcending his circumstances and creating his own Blueprint. FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/DNXgiA3S5TQ ABOUT JULIAN: Julian Thomson is a British Car Designer that graduated at the top of his class from the prestigious Royal College of Art in 1984. From there he went on to pay his dues at Ford and Lotus where he eventually became the head of Design. After a short stint at Volkswagen's Advanced Design studio at Sitges, he decided that he had a longing to return to English soil and work with friends. After the unfortunate death of Geoff Lawson (then head of Jaguar), Ian Callum was appointed as the new Design Director and he asked Julian to join the iconic British marque as the Head of Advanced Design. The two of them proved to be a perfect combination that would reshape the brand into what it has become today. At a pretty young age, Julian designed multiple cars that went on to achieve iconic status, including the Lotus Esprit X180, ISUZU 4200, and the legendary Lotus Elise S1. Not everyone is cut out for leadership and many should not be leaders, but after a seemingly effortless success as a designer, Julian had a natural transition into that world. It is because he cares deeply about the people that he works with. I have, personally, had the honour to witness what a great leader he is and anyone that has worked with him will tell you the same. FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/nocgmpotlxw ABOUT ANKUR: Ankur is an incredibly smart and driven designer based in Zell am See in Austria. By the time he was approaching graduation as an Engineer, he realised that his heart was just not in Engineering and decided that he wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a Car Designer. He convinced his parents that he was not going to start working, but in fact, return to University and change lanes. Ankur enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology to study Industrial Design in Delhi, where he was able to manipulate some of the briefs into Automotive themed projects. While he excelled in the creative space, it became obvious that it was necessary for him, personally, to develop his skills further in Europe and he had his heart set on Italy. Again, he had to convince his parents that he had to study further and so he applied to SPD in Milan. After acceptance into the Foundation program, he gained admission to the Masters Course and started learning under the direction of Michele Leonello. Ankur worked harder than he had ever done in order to get his skills to an exceptional level and eventually graduated from the program. With a solid foundation in Engineering and 2 Masters' degrees in hand, he still struggled to find work as a Car Designer. Ankur took a job at SPD as an assistant tutor in order to keep in the loop and carry on developing. Along the way, Ankur has unintentionally developed his very own distinctive style of sketching. What started out as an experiment has become his trademark, whereby he sketches and shades with a single marker. These sketches are totally unique and therefore instantly recognisable as an Ankur Singh sketch. After multiple setbacks and endless determination, Ankur eventually landed a job at Design Storz in Austria where he continues to thrive today. He is humble, hard-working, and the perfect role model for the mindset and attitude needed to rise above the adverse conditions that every aspiring designer will find themselves in when starting out. He has over 15 years of OEM experience and has worked for companies that include PSA, GM and Honda. Leo has also worked as a motorcycle designer in Japan, which he thoroughly enjoyed, but eventually made the transition in teaching and together with his ex-partner and the mighty Art Martins, he founded Sketch-it, an Online Learning Resource that teaches the fundamentals of Sketching and Rendering. There are only a handful of people online that are genuinely adding value when it comes to teaching the craft of Car Design and I consider Leandro to be one of them. Leo is not only an experienced designer, but he also fully understands the problems that most novices face when it comes to drawing and communicating their ideas. He has developed a system that deconstructs the process to a level that even a child can understand and has helped many young designers through the process of securing internships and even getting their first jobs. Make no mistake, Leo could go back to working in an OEM tomorrow, but he values his independence and simply put, he loves teaching and has been doing this years before the masses have seen the cash-grab opportunity. Leo is an honest and legitimate guy with no hidden agenda, other than providing a product and service with exceptional value to anyone wanting to improve their skills.
