On this episode of The Adrenaline Zone, hosts James “Sandy” Winnefeld and Sandra Magnus speak with Brad Snyder, former EOD Officer and US Paralympian, about responding to the consequences that sometimes accompany risk.   Brad is certainly no stranger to risk. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 2006, he became an EOD Officer in Afghanistan, often responsible for defusing notoriously dangerous IEDs. Even careful planning and extensive risk-mitigation tactics can't guarantee safety, and Brad was injured by an IED explosion in 2011, which left him blind.   Such a catastrophic injury would lead most people to seek a more stable and comfortable lifestyle. Brad responded by tackling this newfound challenge head-on. He continued to confront risk, albeit in a different form.   Having already proven himself a capable swimmer at the Naval Academy, Brad began representing the USA as a Paralympic athlete. He has since garnered over a half-dozen medals, most of them gold, at multiple Paralympics.   Brad's journey testifies both to the dangers that many risks pose and to the rewards that come from persevering through their adversity.  - Brad Snyder - https://www.bradsnyder.us/ - Brad Snyder - https://www.linkedin.com/in/bradsnyderusa/ - US Paralympics - https://www.teamusa.org/Tokyo-2020-Paralympic-Games - US Paralympics - https://www.linkedin.com/company/united-states-olympic-and-paralympic-committee/ - US Navy - https://www.navy.mil/ - Sandra Magnus - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sandra-magnus-70754a16/   This episode is sponsored by ZOA Energy. In this series, we talk about adaptive technologies and physical disability. Clayton Frech, the founder and CEO of Angel City Sports, joins us to discuss the disability community at the intersection of technology. We discuss disability in the space of intersectionality, the significance of sports for the disability community, and why designing for a diversity of bodies, with equity and empathy, makes a difference. Over the last twenty-five years, Clayton Frech has held leadership roles in the business, government, and non-profit sectors. He became involved in the disability community when his first son, Ezra, was born missing his left knee and left fibula and with only one finger on his left hand.  Following Ezra’s passion for sports, Mr. Frech identified major gaps in access to sports programming for athletes with physical disabilities in the U.S.  In 2013, with the help of friends and family, he set out to address these gaps, and in 2015, he produced the first Angel City Games, which is now the largest Paralympic competition in the country, and the West Coast’s most prestigious Paralympic event.   In 2015, Mr. Frech started Angel City Sports to address inequities in access to sport for kids and adults living with physical disabilities. In addition to serving as a strategic advisor to a number of small and mid-sized companies, he recently launched Ampla Institute, a career development and planning firm dedicated to helping people find their purpose and optimize their career potential. Stay tuned for next week’s episode, where we talk to Ezra Frech about running on a blade as a US Paralympian athlete, headed to Tokyo for the International Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Tanner Gers was an All-American kid growing up, excelling in school and sports, but On March 28, 2004, this All-American life should have ended during a tragic auto accident. That day, a tree shot through Tanner’s windshield, causing a traumatic brain injury, fracturing his spinal column, blowing his eye out of the socket, leaving a massive hole in his face and skull, and even with his brain exposed to the air, Tanner miraculously survived. While emergency services wrote Tanner off, he fought over 75 minutes until he made it to the hospital. His situation worsened when 19 days later, he woke up from surgery totally blind. The biggest tragedy in Tanner’s life wasn’t losing his sight. It was not taking every day by the horns and living life to the fullest like he does today. Since coming out of that fire, Tanner has graduated from college, started business ventures in food service, sales, health and fitness, consulting, professional speaking, and has been featured in media outlets such as SportingNews.com, CEO Powercast, Relaunch Show, Superhuman Entrepreneur, and Unstoppable Success Radio. Holding a degree in Business, he consults and speaks for corporate, educational, and organizational clients to improve performance, leadership, health, and bottom line results. Giving back and supporting the community is a high priority for Tanner, which is why he has worked with disabled youth and adults through various organizations such as Easter Seals, the Foundation for Blind Children, US Veterans Affairs, and Wounded Warriors. While Tanner has been building businesses, he’s also been building himself as an athlete. His athletic achievements  include being the 2011 Para Pan American gold medalist, 2012 US Paralympic trials gold medalist, 2012 Paralympian, and a 2013 World Championship team member in track and field, 3-time National Beep Baseball Association World Series Offensive MVP, and 6-time Offensive All-Star, as well as the 2015 US National Champion in track cycling. "The biggest tragedy in my life wasn't that I lost my sight. The biggest tragedy is that I didn't live my life, before I lost my sight, like I do today. Today I see my blindness as a gift . . ."  -Tanner Gers This episode of Influence introduces the incredible story of Tanner Gers. At age 21, Tanner was in a horrible car accident that left him blind in both eyes. Instead of giving up, Tanner took flight, finishing his degree and eventually representing the United States as a Paralympic athlete. Today, Tanner is a power-house entrepreneur with a variety of businesses centered around coaching, health, and fitness. Just listening to Tanner will inspire you to stand up, get over yourself, and do something fantastic with your life. In this episode we are going to talk about: The accident that cost Tanner his vision and how he was able to overcome such adversity. How Tanner was able to "get back up", finish his degree, and become paralympic gold medalist. The power of belief and how Tanner was able to save his own life. How to take control of your life and find greatness within you. How to view obstacles as "gifts" that can propel your life to new heights. "Everyday is a lot easier when you know it could always be worse"  -Tanner Gers MEET TANNER GERS Tanner Gers (pronounced Gears) is a published author, professional speaker, US Paralympian, founder of ABSolutely Lean, and host of The Athlete Summit. Tanner’s big mission in life is to help people across the world achieve their potential with his gift for cultivating confidence, determination, and the will to achieve greatness in life, regardless of circumstance. Oh yeah. He’s also totally blind. In 2004, Tanner experienced a horrible auto accident that left him in a coma and destroyed his ability to see. Tanner was determined to not be defined by his disability or let that prevent him from living his dreams. Tanner is an individual that embodies the idea that anyone can do anything they set their mind to and does this every day by helping others achieve their full potential. In 2010, Tanner started training and coaching developmental athletes in various sports, including volleyball, baseball, football and cross country. After having the honor and the privilege to represent the United States at the 2012 Games in London, Tanner’s focus on optimal athletic performance began to shift toward optimal health. While having tremendous success with his 1-on-1 clients, Tanner felt he could do more with his story and began his public speaking career. Quickly becoming an accomplished speaker, Tanner delivers keynotes for schools, colleges, non-profits, and corporate events across the country in addition to presentations on exercise, nutrition, and health. Motivated to help individuals worldwide, Tanner launched www.ABSolutelyLean.com and published two books, “Becoming ABSolutely Lean: The First Steps to Optimal Health, Hormones and Achieving a Lean Body,” and “ABSolutely Lean Fast Food: The Fat Loss Guide in a Fast Food Life” and released his bodyweight fitness program, ABSolutely Lean System Fitness. Today, Tanner still consults, trains and designs customized programs for women, men and youth in health, body composition, fitness and athletic performance through www.ABSolutelyLean.com. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated people reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.
