In Episode 130 of White Canes Connect, hosts Stacie Leap and David Goldstein spotlight the fifth annual Piano Bar virtual fundraiser—Five Years at the Bar. This musical event brings together blind performers from across the U.S. to raise funds for the Pennsylvania Parents of Blind Children and Blind Parents divisions. Guests Eddie Salcido (California) and John Dowling (Minnesota) share their excitement about returning to the virtual stage, where they'll perform original songs and their favorites. The lineup includes four performers—Angelina (PA), Carl Smith (UT), John, and Eddie—each bringing a mix of vocals, piano, guitar, saxophone, and more. The event format features a round-robin style performance and an intermission for audience interaction, making it feel like a true musical lounge. It's not just about the music—it's about community. The episode also highlights another upcoming fundraiser: The Blind Families Cookbook, a collaborative project offering recipes in Braille, large print, digital, and audio formats. Both initiatives support blind families through advocacy, programming, and connection. Listeners can join Piano Bar on April 12 at 7 PM ET for just $10 at nfbofpa.org/pianobar. Chandrabir Oli's life is nothing short of extraordinary. Born and raised in rural Nepal, he faced extreme poverty and hardships. Despite these struggles, his determination to support his blind children led him to singlehandedly excavate roads in Nepal, carving a 4 km path through rugged terrain using only basic tools. His story is an inspiring example of hard work and dedication, proving that one man's perseverance can change an entire community. In this episode, Chandrabir shares his journey from a 40-rupee wedding to working in India for survival, only to return home and find himself in the midst of the Maoist insurgency in Nepal. He opens up about the tragic reality of raising five blind children and his encounters with spiritual forces in Nepal. His firsthand war stories, life struggles, and unwavering determination make this one of the most inspiring stories from Nepal. We also discuss how Chandrabir sustained himself financially, his experiences with poverty in rural Nepal, and how his road-building efforts transformed lives. His story of resilience, faith, and sheer willpower is a testament to the real-life survival stories that define Nepal's history and culture.

Visioncorps is accepting Braille letters to send to Santa. Kids who submit a letter will hear back even if it is after Christmas. Erika Rothermel is a teacher of the blind and visually impaired at Visioncorps. “So being able to write a letter to Santa is a long standing tradition that children have been doing for years. But being able to open it up to the Braille population has been a new adventure. And it's, yeah, something fun to include everybody. So we started doing that here at Vision Core about five years ago, “said Rothermel. 9-year-old JJ Maldonado took advantage of the opportunity and is looking forward to hear back from Santa soon. “I asked for a microphone.. and a police car, “said Maldonado.” Maldonado’s mother, Yaritza Riversa says Visioncorps has helped with JJ’s journey. JJ was diagnosed with cancer at just a month old. “He was born with cancer. It's a genetic type of cancer. But he's that one person that was actually born without mom and dad having that gene. And it is bilateral, meaning he has it in both eyes, “said Rivera. He began chemo at just three months old and underwent a lot of chemo and radiation. “He actually got his right eye removed at the age of three years old. And that's kind of where the vision kind of went down a little bit. I'm the only eye he had. And so, yeah, and then Vision Corp kicked in and helped so much during this transition because it's definitely tough and they made it so much easier, especially for JJ and myself, because, you know, as a mom, it's like, what do I do? Not knowing this is on you. So, they have been a blessing to us. And even though JJ is now in school when he's 13, they still involved him and everything, and they're there for him no matter what. Just on a on a regular time. You know, they check up on Jay and make sure he's doing great. So they're amazing and we are so blessed to have them, “said Rivera. According to JJ, learning braille can be challenging. “It's really hard to learn all the contractions and all how to like type with your fingers and how to read properly. It's been a hard journey, “said Malonado. When JJ grows up, he wants to be a rapper. Listen to the podcast link to her his performance. There is no deadline for letter submission this holiday season. To mark World Sight Day (10th October 2024), Percussion Play, the leading designer and manufacturer of outdoor musical instruments, has been working with the Royal Society for Blind Children (RSBC) and The Amber Trust to understand how music-making outside can be made more accessible for young people who are blind, have low vision, or are partially sighted. This research aims to make play areas around the world more accessible and safer.   The research entailed Percussion Play holding two events at the RSBC's Life Without Limits Centre in London with group and individual-focused musical workshops and instrument demonstrations for blind and visually impaired children and adolescents in the UK.   Percussion Play also invited the RSBC to its headquarters in Hampshire. The sessions were designed to garner feedback on the design of the instruments with the aim of making them more accessible and user-friendly for blind, low vision and partially sighted users. Instruments included Percussion Play's uniquely designed drums, xylophones, bells and chimes.   RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined by Julie Davis, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Society for Blind Children to find out more about how the collaboration came about, reflecting on the workshops, talking about the work that went in to the publication of the white paper ‘The Sounds of Progress' and the importance of accessible play areas for young visually impaired people.  To read the white paper ‘The Sounds of Progress' and to find out more about the Royal Society for Blind Children do visit their website - https://www.rsbc.org.uk (Image shows RNIB logo. How sweet. Fresh Meat!?! That's until the meat is proven to be anything but sweet. Determined to survive the winter, two brothers with nothing, but bad ideas, decide to salvage their remain flock of lambs by slaughtering them and selling the meat. These sheep are falling one by one with an infection of Anthrax (Maybe? maybe not? No harm in NOT telling anyone about the possible risk/side effects). And in less than 24 hours The Harriet Oleson School of the Advancement of Blind Children is converted into The Harriet Oleson School of the Advancement of Blind Children and General Hospital. Running out of time, medicine and warm weather, Charles and Jonathan Garvey are set to task with picking up supplies from the train station in neighboring Springfield and returning home. When it rains it pours....snows it blizzards (?) and Charles and Jonathan find themselves on the wrong end off a shotgun, lose their supplies and their ride home. Of course this doesn't stop them as they set out to save their family, friends and town from certain death. Was every student at the HIB sick, is that why we never saw any of them...except poor Thomas? Was Carrie really left alone at Plum Creek watching over Baby Grace this entire episode? Tonight`s Jazz Feature is the recording debut of a young prodigy named Eric Kloss. Eric is celebrating his 73rd Birthday today and playing his music is a good idea to honor his recorded legacy. Eric was born blind and learned music and the saxophone at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children and made his professional debut at age 12!! He continued to perform in and around Philadelphia at concerts and festivals and made his recording debut at age 16! This album was called ``Introducing Eric Kloss`` and was the first of ten for Prestige Records. He is heard here on alto and tenor saxophones with the great Don Patterson on Hammond organ, Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums. Eric went on to record for Muse Records in the 70`s and mixed straight-ahead Jazz with fusion. He also taught at various colleges but health problems curtailed his playing and recording activity and he has kept a low profile since. Today he celebrates his 73rd Birthday and I hope we might hear him once again. Enjoy his debut tonight right here!

Welcome to January 4th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate nerding out and seeing things in a different light. If you've ever attended quiz night at a local pub, you know how exciting trivia can be. There's a thrill that comes from knowing that a seemingly useless piece of information holds the key to winning a game. Even in the early days of television, trivia was all the rage. Quiz shows were so popular that when news broke about cheating on the shows, it became national news and Congress held hearings to get to the bottom of things. Celebrate National Trivia Day being a know-it-all by sharing this, or any other random facts. Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809 in a small French village. While playing in his parents saddle shop, he injured his eye and by age five Louis was totally blind. He learned by listening and the diligent student was enrolled in the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris. As fate would have it, a captain in Napoleon's army visited the school and taught the children Night Writing. This complex communication code used 12 dots, but young Louis believed he could make it more simple. By age 15 Louis Braille completed the 6 dot fingertip reading system with 64 characters in total. The code was adopted at Louis's school in 1824 but a new school Director banned the Braille system in 1840, saying it would make sighted teachers obsolete. Thankfully, the world recognized the genius of Louis Braille and by 1916 his system was used in American schools for the blind. On World Braille Day, we celebrate the far reaching impact of a boy who saw things differently.   I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day!  Learn more about your ad choices.
