The Business Generals Podcast | Helping You Maximize Your Entrepreneurial Dreams - Every Single Week

Joel Boggess is the go-to guy for clarity, confidence, and direction. He is an author, life coach, and online radio host (ReLaunch Show). He teaches professionals and women on-the-go how to find clarity, confidence and direction even when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unchallenged. He helps entrepreneurs, owners, and business leaders make better decisions, take bolder actions, and get greater results.  With a Master's degree in counselling and many years' experience working one-on-one and with special interest groups, Joel has the know-how, skill, and wisdom, to help you tune into fully expressing your voice. He is a No. 1 Best Selling Author for his book, Finding Your Voice, which hit the top spots on Amazon. He is also a contributor to Huffpost and Success.com.  Last corporate job  His last corporate job was in the Dallas, Fort Worth area working for Morgan Stanley. He officially left formal employment on November 30th 2006.  Core revenue streams  Joel has been doing podcast coaching and one-on-one coaching. He has helped people create, launch and grow their podcast shows. He recently tweaked his business model to focus exclusively on speaking to get paid, where has had some experience.  Tip: Podcasting is the new networking and the best way to make connections that you would never make through any other channel  Starting out in business  One month after leaving formal employment, Joel got a speaking engagement. During that speaking engagement, Zig Ziglar was seated in the front row which challenged Joel to do his best and also motivated him to move forward as an entrepreneur. He initially started as a one-on-one career and life coach and that was his primary revenue stream for a long time.  Replacing the Morgan Stanley income  Joel says it took a couple of years to replace his Morgan Stanley income.   Tip: If you live under the same roof with someone who is highly involved in your life, make sure you have an agreement with them before you leave formal employment.  Why podcasting?  Apart from having mixes of experience in radio and TV, Joel knew he had to be in the podcast industry and be a leader. Podcasting is of great value to him and he says that having a podcast has been one of the best business decisions he has ever made.  Monetizing the podcast  He says this is not the most important thing because he views his podcast as a door opener and relationship/opportunity maker. It has helped him get on stages and develop relationships with million-dollar speakers, actors, best-selling authors, and athletes. Inviting those people on his podcast show enabled him to bridge the gap between him and them.    Reason for success so far  Joel says focusing on what he wanted to accomplish enabled him to create a show that would add value to people and help him get some growth opportunities. He has been focused on creating that show, getting quality content from the guests that he hosts, and developing the show's social media presence. Focusing on the show has helped him get to the point where he can now move forward into diversification.    Tip: Focus is the number one competitive advantage  Initial wrong move  He says one of the mistakes he made in the beginning was counting on his previous guests to drive his show growth by directing traffic to his website and social media sites. The results were disastrous for him despite having all the biggest names on his show because the show was not growing. Taking ownership of the show's growth later on was a big game changer.  Tip: As a podcaster, add value in the conversation and to the conversation, and that will change the way the interviewee views you  Leveraging the networking aspect of the podcast and the current social outreach strategy after each show  Joel says that he has learnt the importance of repurposing content which involves sending out shows multiple times on various social media channels. He mostly uses Twitter for the...

Today I'm back from Podfest in Orlando Florida. What a great show, there were tons of brand new podcasters looking to jump into the space. This week we share if you had one podcast episode that sticks in your brain, if so why. Joining the Podcast Family 4:28 I share how the Podcast Family came to my rescue when I had a device fail when I got to Florida. Special thanks to Marc Johanssen of the Podcast Gear Facebook Group, and Michael O'Neal of the Solopreneur Hour who let me borrow gear to make my session happen when things broke during travel. My Favorite Episode Is 09:35  Gabe from Guys and Food said his favorite episode(s) were from The Sporkful http://www.sporkful.com/calls-a-root-beer-float-to-cure-the-cancer-blues/ and http://www.sporkful.com/margaret-chos-eating-disorder-advice-to-a-teenage-girl/ Both were poignant and heartfelt depictions of people who are going through pain and the ways that they try to handle it. Their stories are told in an authentic and human way. These episodes stand on their own because of that. However, they especially stand out when juxtaposed to the other, more lighthearted episodes. It reminds me of the TV show MASH in this way. 11:42 Lee From This is Rammy loved and episode of the Social Media Examiner and one of the things he does't is recommend it to his friends. 14:12 Zack Demopoulos of the Rasing Rants Podcast loved the Story of Monty Roberts on the Relaunch Show with Joel Boggess  18:12 Kuldryn from Kuldrin's Krypt loved the emotion behind episode three of the Messengers Podcast 21:30 Emily from the Story Behind Podcast loved the story of Charles Manson's Hollywood. The Dave Jackson Two Question Challenge 25:36 The first question is what do you like about my show, the second question is what you wish I would change. Write and email with the title of "559" and send in a voicemail, or audio by 3/24 Behind the Scenes of My Podfest Presentation My presentation got off to a rocky start, this lead to many voice in my head filled with panic. Things weren't turning out the way I wanted. When I was done, as things had not gone the way I wanted, I assumed it was awful. Yet I was approached by people who told me it was a great presentation. I've said this before, if you aim at perfect and miss, you'll land on really, really good. Quit Obsessing Over Things That Don't Matter People are failing to launch their podcast because they are obsessed over things that don't really matter (color of website, the player your are using). I don't recommend a podcast based on the player or color of the website.   Mentioned in the Show Grow Great Podcast Lee Silverstein's Colon Cancer Podcast Horse Radio Network Ham Radio 360 Podcast Kenn Blanchard - Black Man with a Gun Kenn Blanchard Show Join the School of Podcasting

Tanner was an All-American kid growing up, excelling in school and sports, but On March 28, 2004, this All-American life should have ended during a tragic auto accident. That day, a tree shot through Tanner’s windshield, causing a traumatic brain injury, fracturing his spinal column, blowing his eye out of the socket, leaving a massive hole in his face and skull, and even with his brain exposed to the air, Tanner miraculously survived. While emergency services wrote Tanner off, he fought over 75 minutes until he made it to the hospital. His situation worsened when 19 days later, he woke up from surgery totally blind. The biggest tragedy in Tanner’s life wasn’t losing his sight. It was not taking every day by the horns and living life to the fullest like he does today. Since coming out of that fire, Tanner has graduated from college, started business ventures in food service, sales, health and fitness, consulting, professional speaking, and has been featured in media outlets such as SportingNews.com, CEO Powercast, Relaunch Show, Superhuman Entrepreneur, and Unstoppable Success Radio. Holding a degree in Business, and as an avid disability advocate, he consults and speaks for corporate, educational, and organizational clients to improve D&I, leadership, and bottom line results. Giving back and supporting the community is a high priority for Tanner, which is why he has worked with disabled youth and adults through various organizations such as Easter Seals, the Foundation for Blind Children, US Veterans Affairs, and Wounded Warriors. While Tanner has been building businesses, he’s also been building himself as an athlete. His athletic achievements include being the 2011 Para Pan American gold medalist, 2012 US Paralympic trials gold medalist, 2012 Paralympian, and a 2013 World Championship team member in track and field, 3-time National Beep Baseball Association World Series Offensive MVP, and 6-time Offensive All-Star, as well as the 2015 US National Champion in track cycling. For Tanner, it isn’t about adding up any number of achievements though. It’s about embracing his purpose and living it, by helping others recognize and achieve their true potential in every area of their life, regardless of circumstance. When today's guest was five years old, he fell off a railway bridge and landed on hard ground 30 feet down. He spent weeks in a coma, and years healing; at the time a doctor wrote into his chart "don't expect Joel to lead a normal life." Well, that statement certainly turned out to be true! Joel Boggess of The ReLaunch Show is living a downright extraordinary life, getting a degree in counseling psychology and then combining that with his background in radio to cohost – along with his wife, dentist and business guru Dr. Pei Kang – the ReLaunch podcast. Joel's written an Amazon bestseller, Finding Your Voice, and he and Pei work together as entrepreneurs, podcasting and coaching. Joel graciously agreed to come on We Turned Out Okay a few weeks previously, spent the morning of our interview at the emergency room for treatment of a busted elbow, and still came through with our chat. Talk about going above and beyond! Our conversation ranged from Joel and Pei's two golden retrievers, retired therapy dogs, to some great advice to help us help our kids through tough situations. Show Summary In this episode Joel and Leslie talk husband to husband, human to human about what to do when tragedy derails your plans and impacts your life. It’s genuine, heartfelt, and practical. Joel’s advice is also unexpected and deeply humanizing. It’s a must listen, especially if you have a “just push through it” personality. You can find out more about Joel and his work at Relaunch over at RelaunchShow.com (highly recommended). React to this like a person, not like a good little solider. – Joel Boggess, Relaunch The Details Normally, I’m joined by my co-host and amazing wife Laura who is the co-founder of Glimmering and Wild Goose Guidance. But this episode is a first for two reasons. First, it’s our first episode with a guest that isn’t related to us! I’m very grateful to be speaking with Joel Boggess – one half of the team behind the creation, development, and explosive growth of ReLaunch, a podcast that interviews the hottest and most in-demand personal development experts and business thought-leaders to bring you fresh ideas, inspiring stories, and most importantly, practical steps that help you start over with confidence. Just recently Relaunch was listed in the “Top 5 podcasts for inspiration” by the Huffington post. And, Relaunch made it into Inc.’s top 20 business podcasts for 2015. Joel is a specialist at helping people “relaunch” a book or podcast, and reach number 1 in their categories and get their message out to not just a big audience, but the right audience. Originally, Laura and I were going to pick Joel’s brain on the work we’re doing with Marriage Startup and especially Laura’s work on Wild Goose Guidance, but that got unexpected derailed. Which brings us to our second first: This is the first episode without Laura. Yesterday, a close friend of the family received news that their mom has cancer. It has thrown all of us for a loop and Laura has jumped in to help however she can. Victim Mentality - When Bad Things Happen to Good PeopleIt's a fact of life. Bad things happen to good people. Bad things also happen to bad people. Bad things just happen. That fact of life does not matter as much as how we respond to it. The worse thing that can happen to any of us is to succumb to a victim mentality, wallowing in that event in a negative, unhealthy way. The victim mentality can prevent people from taking action towards their success. In many cases, it'll be the very thing that talks you out of making your own path before you ever get started. You've probably heard some of these signs of a victim mentality around you, maybe even spoken by you.I can't get hired in this economyThey replaced me with a machineSomeone took my jobThat boss was out to get meMen cheat! They all cheat! It's okay to grieve. It's not okay to stop living life. At some point, you need to make a choice to get out of the rut of a victim mentality. Joel Boggess - Podcaster, Coach, #1 Best Selling Author    About Joel Boggess   Joel Boggess’ broadcasting career began in the early 90’s – behind the mic in traditional radio, on camera as a reporter, and in the master control room as an Assistant Producer.   Today, he is a #1 bestselling author, a front-runner in the world of podcasting and new media, and is one-half of the broadcast team behind the creation, development and explosive growth of ReLaunch.   Within 12 days of the podcast’s initial blast off, it soared up the iTunes charts. It nailed #1 in business, education, and in health respectively in New and Noteworthy.   His latest book, Finding your Voice, hit the #1 spot on Amazon in three categories - success, self esteem, and happiness; on the same day, in the same hour.       Joel has mastered the art and science of how to develop and execute a podcast launch and growth plan, as well as how to mobilize listeners. His global audience has grown 10-fold in twelve month’s time and he has earned numerous podcast awards including Best Overall and Most Inspirational podcast for ReLaunch - Become Known in Your Niche. A couple of the points that Joel discussed that I find inspiring are: The concept and phrase "Consistent Persistence". You have to continue to persist when you are working on your goals. It ties into the Best Advice Received, below. The other is "Personal Accountability". I asked Joel about the subject of Mentoring and Mastermind groups, both services that Joel provides to those that want it. But, as he states, there really has to be personal accountability to be able to achieve goals. You have to be able to be accountable to yourself. Joel uses the mantra of #ResultsOnly #NoExcuses to help us think about how we should have personal accountability. Best Advice Received: Best Advice I've Received is "To not quit, don't quit." Joel Boggess Joel discusses the inspiration that the movie, "Facing The Giants" has about not quitting. The coach in the story motivates a football player by having him do bear crawls blindfolded. Why blindfolded?, you ask.  Watch the movie.  It's available on Netflix DVD. ReLaunch – Become Known in Your Niche – podcasts and resources to inspire entrepreneurial confidence, maximize visibility and promote business growth. Founders Joel and Dr. Pei.  Secret -- timesaving technique Technique learned from Darren Hardy, publisher of SUCCESS Magazine -- schedule a “90-minute Jam Sessions” to work on your most vital priorities. Daily habit that contributes to success Consistently working out / fitness has been a game-changer because it provides the energy to carry out what needs to be done. Could have ruined your business -- but now -- an invaluable learning experience Joel produced eight podcasts before The Relaunch Show took off. All of those lessons of what not to do contributed to Relaunch becoming the massive success it is today. But it took determination to work through those painful lessons learned in online marketing, business systems, and how to build a strategy to reach the right audience. Most critical skill you think business owners need to master to be successful Business owners need to master themselves by learning their strengths, features, talents, and skills so they can move their business from A to B. Most influential lesson learned a mentor The power of “Success Vitals” learned from Darren Hardy during his live High Performance Summit in La Jolla, California. We need to zero in like a laser beam in order to maximize our result outcomes.     Final Round -- “Breaking Down the Recipe for Success”   What systems would you go back and put into place sooner? Developing a good understanding of what content your customer avatar wants -- and then setting up a content funnel inside an email distribution system to deliver exactly that and nurture the relationship. “Your list is your currency.” What one strategy or “recipe” would compound into big wins for business owners? Make 15 cold calls every day in order to present offers and pitches to develop new business relationships -- and meticulously track all of the metrics and touch points. How to exceed expectations and add the most value? Delegate and teach your team to take more and more off your task list so they can “do things today that will create time for you tomorrow.” Powerful lesson Joel and Dr. Pei learned from Rory Vaden, author of Procrastinate on Purpose. What strategy would you recommend new business owners focus on to best ensure success? Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback (it is the only way you can get better). Surround yourself with the best books and the best training resources. Surround yourself with relationships -- link arms with a mentor -- people who will not only teach you but will let you stand on their shoulders so you can get up there and see what you currently cannot see. We're excited to share with everyone the second half of our interview with Joel and Pei of Relaunch Show! Joel and Pei both firmly believe that taking care of yourself is a priority and must not be overlooked.  It is because of this priority that they do not find it hard to make time to be active. Joel, much like our host Josh, is a runner.  Pei enjoys Yoga.  Sometimes Pei feels selfish with her yoga because she teaches a class and charges for her time.  This is the perfect example of making the most of a situation!  Pei enjoys Yoga, and she knows it well enough to teach.  What better way to stay motivated than by leading a class that people pay for?  Now everyone wins!  Pei's students receive instruction from a knowledgeable person while Pei is motivated to work out and earns some additional income for herself. The Yoga conversation then leads to a surprising revelation between our hosts.  Josh, who is very physically active, is not very limber or flexible.  Ben, who is not physically active at all, can indeed touch his toes without bending his knees. Joel and Pei also share their experiences with hiring additional staff to remove some of the burdens of their job.  Josh asks them some detailed questions to help himself and Utopians when it comes to hiring additional staff, including virtual staff. Joel and Pei round out the show with their three important lessons: Learn to Delegate Quit asking for permission and do it already! Focus on marketing, it is a noisy world out there Joel and Pei also shared some of their favorite books: Finding Your Voice by Joel Boggess Amazon and iTunes Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. We are excited for today's show, this is part 1 of our interview with Joel Boggess and Dr. Pei Kang, both of which are Radio Hosts, Speakers, and Entrepreneurs. Joel and Pei have a great definition of Utopia, it is the ability to live where you want, contributing how you want in a way that not only adds value to the greater good, but also to yourself.  Josh and Ben dive into that through the lens of Build Your Utopia and how the show started as a way to add value to Utopians, but it is also a way to add value to their own lives. Pei also gives us a glimpse of her inner Texan by giving us an enthusiastic "YEE HAW!!"  Something she says she has never done before.  It also gives us a great transition into Joel and Pei's point of Seasons of Life and living in the moment.  Joel and Pei believe that life, just like a farmer has seasons for planting, tending, harvesting, and resting; there are seasons to life, relationships, and business.  It is best to identify what season you are in so you can best maximize that season.  They then share the example that with their current show, The Relaunch Show, is in the planting phase as they ramp up the show. Joel and Pei share that The Relaunch Show is actually their 5th show. They have made this one successful by taking all the lessons they've learned from the previous shows to make this one the best it can be. Joel is also the number one bestselling author of Finding Your Voice, and Dr. Pei has the experience of successfully running both online and brick and mortar businesses. During the show you'll find out one of the biggest mistakes podcasters make, how to get podcast guests to open up, and why content is no longer king.         Main Questions Asked: -       Did you record Chris Brogan at a conference? -       How do you work together successfully as a couple? -       How do you divide the roles on the show? -       Share your thoughts on high quality interviews and great content. -       Talk about podcasters thinking star guests will save their show. -       If star guests aren't the ticket to a huge audience, what is? -       How can a guest help build your show? -       How do you decide what interviews get released on your show? -       What do you do in your show to get guests to be comfortable opening up and keeping the conversation flowing? -       Talk about what's next for Relaunch.   Key Lessons Learned: -       Relaunch is Joel and Pei's fifth podcast, which shows that sometimes you have to go through trial and error before you find success. -       You become a better podcaster when you take the art and craft of interviewing seriously. -       Every touch point matters, so it's important to check in with your guest and keep them updated on what's going on and where they are in the process. -       As a podcaster, you need to position yourself directly to who matters. -       Content is no longer king; it is a commodity. This means that no one person owns the market. -       Podcasting is all about connection, relationships, and showing your personality. -       Always place the listeners time as a priority.   Podcasting Guests -       Your guest does not drive your show, you drive your show. -       Often, guests can be heard on a variety of shows, but only you can be heard on your show.  -       The big mistake podcasters make is thinking that the star guest is a ticket to a huge audience and will save their show. -       Remember, it is the podcaster who is the difference maker, not the guest. -       When you bring a guest on your show think of them as a co-host rather than a high and mighty expert. -       Your guest needs to understand who your audience is, what their greatest challenges are, and how the guest can offer the most value. -       When your guests feel like they have a strong relationship with you they are more likely to share the show and recommend people listen to it.   How to Get Guests To Open Up -       Create a safe space very quickly and do a pre-show chat before taking the guest live. -       Even if guests have listened to your show, it's a good idea to give them a 30 second ‘crash course' explaining how it works and your expectations. This will put them at ease. -       If a show isn't going well, sometimes it's not you as the host, it could be that the guest isn't the best conversationalist. -       As a guest, it's better to share a story than a theory as stories are much more entertaining.   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer.
