Nocera, and John A. Bargh. “Incidental Haptic Sensations Influence Social Judgments and Decisions.” Science 328, no. 5986 (2010): 1712–1715. Key use: Haptics, touch, weight, texture, hardness, and the idea that physical sensation can influence judgment and social interpretation. This supports the tactile layer of the episode: heavy doors, cold stone, worn rails, kneelers, relic cases, and sacred matter as meaningful contact.Higuera-Trujillo, Juan Luis, Carmen Llinares, and Eduardo Macagno. “The Cognitive-Emotional Design and Study of Architectural Space: A Scoping Review of Neuroarchitecture and Its Precursor Approaches.” Sensors 21, no. 6 (2021): 2193. Key use: Neuroarchitecture, emotional response to built environments, and the idea that architecture can be studied as a cognitive-emotional stimulus rather than only as art or style.Kilde, Jeanne Halgren. Sacred Power, Sacred Space: An Introduction to Christian Architecture and Worship. Oxford University Press, 2008. Key use: Major backbone source for Christian architecture as a system of worship, power, spatial order, and embodied religious experience. Oxford's description emphasizes Kilde's argument that church buildings represent and reify different forms of power, especially divine power.Morgan, David. The Sacred Gaze: Religious Visual Culture in Theory and Practice. University of California Press, 2005. Key use: Religious seeing, visual culture, sacred images, and the idea that vision is an active religious practice that can invest images, persons, times, and places with spiritual meaning.Taves, Ann. Religious Experience Reconsidered: A Building-Block Approach to the Study of Religion and Other Special Things. Princeton University Press, 2009. Key use: Helps frame religious experience without reducing it to one fixed category. Useful for the episode's approach to how experiences become interpreted, named, and treated as religious or sacred.Clark, Andy. Surfing Uncertainty: Prediction, Action, and the Embodied Mind. Oxford University Press, 2016. Key use: Predictive processing, active inference, and the idea that perception is not passive recording but active prediction and model-building. This supports the “brain does not enter a church like a camera” argument.Krueger, Joel. “Extended Mind and Religious Cognition.” 2016. Key use: Extended and embodied cognition applied to religious practice, ritual objects, and environments. Useful for arguing that worship is not only inside the head but supported by bodies, tools, spaces, and shared action.Oxford Academic. “Embodied Cognition in Ecclesial Practices.” In Oxford Studies in Analytic Theology, 2023. Key use: Christian practices, embodied cognition, Eucharistic action, and religious material culture as cognitively significant rather than merely symbolic.Piff, Paul K., Pia Dietze, Matthew Feinberg, Daniel M. Stancato, and Dacher Keltner. “Awe, the Small Self, and Prosocial Behavior.” Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 108, no. 6 (2015): 883–899. Key use: Awe, vastness, the “small self,” and the psychological effects of encountering something perceived as larger than the ordinary self. This supports the cathedral-scale and sacred-vastness argument.Tarr, Bronwyn, Jacques Launay, and Robin I. M. Dunbar. “Music and Social Bonding: ‘Self-Other' Merging and Neurohormonal Mechanisms.” Frontiers in Psychology 5 (2014): 1096. Key use: Music, synchrony, social bonding, rhythmic action, and group cohesion. This supports the sections on chant, group singing, ritual synchrony, and bodies acting together in sacred space.Ittyerah, Miriam. “Memory for Curvature of Objects: Haptic Touch vs. Vision.” 2007. Key use: Haptic memory, touch-based object recognition, and the idea that touch can produce durable memory traces. Useful for worn rails, thresholds, beads, icons, relic cases, and repeated sacred contact.Lange, Lisa S., et al. “Tactile Memory Impairments in Younger and Older Adults.” Scientific Reports, 2024. Key use: Modern tactile-memory framing; useful for the claim that tactile experience is remembered and retrieved as part of embodied life.Freedberg, David. The Power of Images: Studies in the History and Theory of Response. University of Chicago Press, 1989. Key use: Image response, embodied reaction to sacred or charged images, and why religious images can provoke devotion, fear, destruction, reverence, or bodily response.Plate, S. Brent. A History of Religion in 5½ Objects: Bringing the Spiritual to Its Senses. Beacon Press, 2014. Key use: Material religion, objects, sensory experience, and the idea that religion is encountered through things, not only beliefs.Meyer, Birgit. Mediation and the Genesis of Presence: Toward a Material Approach to Religion. Key use: Material religion, mediation, presence, and how religious traditions use media, objects, images, sounds, and spaces to make the sacred present.Pallasmaa, Juhani. The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses. Key use: Architecture as a multisensory experience, especially touch, materiality, atmosphere, and the limits of treating architecture as only visual.Mallgrave, Harry Francis. The Architect's Brain: Neuroscience, Creativity, and Architecture. Wiley-Blackwell, 2010. Key use: Architecture and neuroscience, built form, emotion, perception, and embodied response to space.Robinson, Sarah, and Juhani Pallasmaa, eds. The Sacred and the Profane: The Nature of Religion. Key use: Sacred space, threshold, center, axis mundi, and the distinction between ordinary space and holy space. This becomes more important in Episode 2, but it also supports Episode 1's general sacred-space framework.van Gennep, Arnold. The Rites of Passage. Key use: Separation, threshold, and incorporation. Useful for the threshold logic that runs through the whole series.Turner, Victor. The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure. Key use: Liminality, transition, communitas, and the ritual power of in-between states.Tuan, Yi-Fu. Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience. Key use: Lived place, memory, experience, and the difference between abstract space and meaningful place.Smith, Jonathan Z. To Take Place: Toward Theory in Ritual. Key use: Ritual as place-making; sacred places are produced through repeated action, interpretation, and return.Morgan, David. Visual Piety: A History and Theory of Popular Religious Images. Key use: Popular religious images, devotional seeing, sacred practice, and how visual material becomes part of lived religion.Kieckhefer, Richard. Theology in Stone: Church Architecture from Byzantium to Berkeley. Key use: Church architecture as theology in built form, useful as a broad Christian architectural bridge source. Also want to remind people about the website, if you're into reading we have tons of information by multiple contributors, and we got t-shirts up on the site if you're interested. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on something that is already inside your world whether you're ready for it or not — artificial intelligence and sex. I'm breaking down four categories of AI-powered intimacy technology: smart sex toys and biofeedback devices, AI companion apps and chatbots, virtual reality experiences, and AI in sexual health and therapy. I talk about what these tools actually do, why they matter specifically for people navigating desire and relationships after 50, and the questions we're not asking loudly enough — about data privacy, about who this technology was built for, and about what happens to our capacity for real human connection when frictionless digital intimacy becomes the easier option. This is not a scare episode. This is a get-informed episode. Because you deserve to be an empowered participant in the world you're already living in.In this episode:00:00 — Introduction: AI Is Already in Your Bedroom01:15 — The Four Categories of AI Intimacy Tech02:30 — Smart Sex Toys and Biofeedback Devices04:10 — Lioness, FirmTech, WeVibe and What They Actually Do05:30 — Haptics and Teledildonics: Physical Intimacy Across Distance06:45 — AI Companion Apps: Loneliness, Grief, and the Limits of Digital Connection08:30 — Virtual Reality and Intimacy: VR Therapy, Body Shame, and Immersive Content10:15 — The Three Questions We're Not Asking About AI and Sex12:00 — Is Technology a Bridge or a Destination?13:15 — Closing: How to Be an Empowered Participant Want a deeper look? > Sunday edition presents:The Return of HapWare > > In this episode of Sunday Edition, Anthony Corona welcomes back Jack Walters and Bryan Duarte of HapWare for a full circle conversation that traces their journey from early concept to a nearly market ready product. > > Listeners will hear how the idea for HapWare evolved into a working prototype, the challenges and breakthroughs along the way, and what it means to now stand on the edge of delivering their first units to customers. This is a rare opportunity to experience innovation in motion, not as a distant future concept, but as something tangible and imminent. > > At the heart of the conversation is the ALEYE wristband, a wearable system designed to translate visual social cues into real time tactile feedback. The discussion explores how this technology has the potential to transform social awareness for blind, low vision, and deafblind individuals by creating access to the unspoken dynamics of human interaction. > > Bryan Duarte shares his deeply personal journey, including the motorcycle accident that took his sight and left him with a traumatic brain injury, and how that experience shaped his path into sensory substitution and haptics. Jack Walters brings insight into the engineering, strategy, and vision required to take HapWare from concept to launch readiness. > > The conversation also explores in depth how haptics have evolved, how the wristband functions in real world use, and what early trials and demonstrations are revealing about its potential impact. > > A key turning point in the development of HapWare is its integration with Meta Ray Ban glasses, a shift that has dramatically expanded the possibilities of the technology and opened the door for broader adoption within the blind and low vision community. > > The episode also highlights the exclusive opportunity available to the Sunday Edition community. Listeners can use the promo code Sunday edition 75 to receive an additional seventy five dollars off the ALEYE wristband on top of existing preorder savings. > > For more information about HapWare, including product details, integration updates, and to register for their upcoming webinar on April 15 th, visitwww.hapware.com > > HapWare will be hosting this webinar as an opportunity for questions, community engagement, and a deeper introduction to the technology. Haptic Motorcycle Safety Advancing Rider Awareness with Viber Alert

Motorcycle safety continues to evolve as new technologies are introduced to reduce distraction and improve rider awareness. Viber Alert focuses on a haptic interface designed to deliver essential information through vibration rather than visual cues. The system integrates vibrating motors into a motorcycle seat, allowing riders to receive alerts without looking away from the road. This approach addresses a significant safety challenge, as rider inattention contributes to a large portion of global road fatalities. The transcript notes that more than one million people lose their lives each year in road accidents, with a substantial percentage linked to distraction. Motorcyclists face an even greater risk because every glance at the dashboard removes attention from the road ahead. By shifting information delivery from visual to tactile, Viber Alert aims to reduce these moments of vulnerability and support safer riding conditions. How the Haptic Interface WorksThe Viber Alert system uses four vibration motors embedded in the seat. These motors are positioned at the four corners, allowing directional cues to be felt through the rider's body. When a turn signal remains active, a vibration is delivered on the corresponding side of the seat. When a vehicle approaches from behind or when another safety system detects a potential hazard, the vibration is delivered from the rear. The system translates dashboard information, navigation cues, and safety alerts into tactile patterns that can be understood without diverting attention. The interface connects directly to the motorcycle and communicates with onboard systems. For aftermarket use, a partnership with Corbin enables integration into replacement seats for a wide range of motorcycle models. Riders using the aftermarket version can connect through a proprietary app that provides haptic navigation, speed trap alerts, and hazard notifications. A button on the side of the saddle allows riders to report road hazards, creating a shared safety network among users.Expanding Access and Future ApplicationsThe technology is currently being integrated through OEM partnerships and aftermarket seat manufacturers. The Corbin collaboration allows riders to purchase seats with the haptic interface already installed, making the system accessible without requiring technical expertise. The app‑based navigation system supports turn‑by‑turn guidance through vibration, reducing reliance on visual map checks. The transcript also highlights potential insurance applications. Because the system collects data on rider behavior, such as harsh braking, aggressive turns, and speed compliance, future partnerships with insurance providers may create opportunities for premium discounts. These possibilities remain under exploration, but the data‑driven nature of the system supports long‑term potential in this area. The origin of the technology is rooted in personal experience. The co‑founder, Vincenzo, developed the system after experiencing a motorcycle accident, motivating the creation of a tool that could reduce risk for other riders. This background reinforces the system's focus on real‑world safety challenges and practical solutions.ConclusionViber Alert introduces a haptic safety interface designed to reduce distraction and improve rider awareness by delivering essential information through vibration. Through directional cues, hazard alerts, and haptic navigation, the system supports safer riding conditions without requiring visual attention. With OEM integration, aftermarket availability, and future insurance applications, the technology reflects a shift toward more intuitive and less distracting motorcycle safety systems.Interview by Scott Ertz of PLUGHITZ Live.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Abstraction & Idealization: AI's Plato Problem [Mazviita Chirimuuta]

Professor Mazviita Chirimuuta joins us for a fascinating deep dive into the philosophy of neuroscience and what it really means to understand the mind.*What can neuroscience actually tell us about how the mind works?* In this thought-provoking conversation, we explore the hidden assumptions behind computational theories of the brain, the limits of scientific abstraction, and why the question of machine consciousness might be more complicated than AI researchers assume.Mazviita, author of *The Brain Abstracted,* brings a unique perspective shaped by her background in both neuroscience research and philosophy. She challenges us to think critically about the metaphors we use to understand cognition — from the reflex theory of the late 19th century to today's dominant view of the brain as a computer.*Key topics explored:**The problem of oversimplification* — Why scientific models necessarily leave things out, and how this can sometimes lead entire fields astray. The cautionary tale of reflex theory shows how elegant explanations can blind us to biological complexity.*Is the brain really a computer?* — Mazviita unpacks the philosophical assumptions behind computational neuroscience and asks: if we can model anything computationally, what makes brains special? The answer might challenge everything you thought you knew about AI.*Haptic realism* — A fresh way of thinking about scientific knowledge that emphasizes interaction over passive observation. Knowledge isn't about reading the "source code of the universe" — it's something we actively construct through engagement with the world.*Why embodiment matters for understanding* — Can a disembodied language model truly understand? Mazviita makes a compelling case that human cognition is deeply entangled with our sensory-motor engagement and biological existence in ways that can't simply be abstracted away.*Technology and human finitude* — Drawing on Heidegger, we discuss how the dream of transcending our physical limitations through technology might reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to be a knower. This conversation is essential viewing for anyone interested in AI, consciousness, philosophy of mind, or the future of cognitive science. Whether you're skeptical of strong AI claims or a true believer in machine consciousness, Mazviita's careful philosophical analysis will give you new tools for thinking through these profound questions.---TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 The Problem of Generalizing Neuroscience00:02:51 Abstraction vs. Idealization: The "Kaleidoscope"00:05:39 Platonism in AI: Discovering or Inventing Patterns?00:09:42 When Simplification Fails: The Reflex Theory00:12:23 Behaviorism and the "Black Box" Trap00:14:20 Haptic Realism: Knowledge Through Interaction00:20:23 Is Nature Protean? Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion is an essential skill for nurses. Students, however, face challenges in learning PIVC insertion due in part to limited opportunities for hands-on practice with real patients. Traditional training methods with low-fidelity task trainers lack variability and depend on costly consumable products. To address this gap, Dr. Jeremy Jarzembak and his team developed a bimanual haptic feedback mixed reality IV simulator. This technology simulates IV needle insertion under diverse conditions. Their article explains the development of this new technology and reports findings on students' improved confidence and success rate.

In today's episode I chat with artist, composer, and record producer Prateek Rajagopal about building bold, immersive music. Prateek breaks down how he balances "feel" with technique, why rhythm is his north star, and how hardware synth/modular workflows can turn raw electric current into musical building blocks for composition and world-building. We also focus on Prateek's experience composing for "In the Current of Being," a haptic VR experience directed by Cameron Kostopoulos that tells the true story of Carolyn Mercer, a survivor of electroshock conversion therapy. Prateek Rajagopal is a film composer, record producer, and artist by way of Oman and India, known for his boundary-pushing work across film, immersive media, and music. He is the executive music producer and composer at KOST AI, where he scored In The Current of Being, which won SXSW 2025, premiered at Cannes Immersive 2025, and the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. In the film and television world, Prateek has collaborated, written, and produced music on major studio projects including Trolls Band Together (Justin Timberlake), Star Wars' The Mandalorian Season 3, and Creed III (Michael B. Jordan), as part of the team under Joe Shirley and Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson; a path he began after being selected for USC's prestigious Screen Scoring program. Most recently, he has returned to his musical roots through close collaboration with electronic composer and producer Bobby Krlic (Midsommar, BEEF, Beau Is Afraid). Outside of film, Prateek is the chief songwriter and guitarist of GUTSLIT, India's leading death metal export.

So, all the different variations of the voiceover sounds that you get, for example, in starting iOS 26, we had this new navigation into Touch Container. I'm going to use that as an example here.So I'll give you a little indicator of what we're looking for here and what I mean by voiceover sound. You heard that little subtle tone. On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through the changes introduced in the second developer beta of iOS 26.  In ‌iOS 26‌ beta 2, Apple refined several interface elements to slightly improve visual clarity and usability. The Control Center's Liquid Glass buttons now appear more clearly, thanks to increased background blur that makes them easier to distinguish. Similarly, the Reduce Transparency setting in Accessibility has been enhanced, further cutting down the see-through effect across the UI. Safari saw a couple of adjustments as well. The new tab button in the tab management view has been moved from the top left to the bottom left corner, bringing it back to its position in iOS 18. Additionally, when using the Compact tab bar layout, back and forward navigation buttons are now present. Apple Music now includes a Live Radio widget, giving users quicker access to real-time radio streams from their Home Screen. There's also a new ringtone option—"Alt 1" under the Reflection category—available in Sounds and Haptics settings. Low Power Mode's description has been rewritten for greater clarity, now explicitly noting that it reduces background activities, processing speed, display refresh rate, brightness, and limits features like 5G and iCloud syncing. Lastly, the default wallpaper introduced with ‌iOS 26‌ has been updated to animate in response to the system's spatial photos feature, adding a more dynamic feel to the home screen. We also discuss Apple's apparent consideration of a bid to buy AI search startup Perplexity, as well as the new purple and green color options rumored for the iPhone 17.  This episode is sponsored by Cash App. Download Cash App Today: https://capl.onelink.me/vFut/h7xvs873 #CashAppPod

Textile Waste and the Catastrophe at Kantamanto

Haptic & Hue

Early this year there was a catastrophic fire at the world's biggest market for selling and upcycling second-hand clothes. Kantamanto market, in Ghana's capital Accra, was accidently set alight, and most of the small stalls in the retail part of the huge market burnt to the ground. Two people died, many were injured, and the livelihoods of thousands of people were destroyed, driving many of them into debt and desperation. But the impact of the fire spread much further than that.    You may not have heard of Kantamanto market, but it plays a vital role in dealing with our textile excess. This is where many of the clothes we donate to charity shops, goodwill centres, or put in textile bins end up. The West African market takes bales of clothing from all over the world and does its best to recycle them. But what can't be used is dumped at informal waste sites or burned, causing mounting environmental problems in Accra's streets and on Ghana's beautiful beaches.     This episode of Haptic and Hue's Tales of Textiles looks at the tragedy and the ingenuity of Kantamanto and tracks the global cost of fast fashion and textile excess. Will the demand for cheap textiles and clothing stop increasing year on year and can they ever be properly recycled? And what can we as consumers do about it?    For more information about this episode and pictures of the people and places mentioned in this episode please go to https://hapticandhue.com/tales-of-textiles-series-7/.   To join  Friends of Haptic & Hue with an extra podcast every month hosted by Jo Andrews and Bill Taylor – here's the link: https://hapticandhue.com/join/

#1531: In the Current of Being Uses Immersive Haptics to Tell the Story of Electroshock Conversation Therapy

IN THE CURRENT OF BEING is a powerfully-told story about electroshock conversion therapy using haptics, mixed reality, and a free-flowing dream logic structure paired with a documentary interview of a survivor. It was a deeply moving experience, and won the new Agog Social Impact Award at SXSW (more on that below). The director is BODY OF MINE's Cameron Kostopolous, who continues exploring embodied storytelling about a very timely topic. There were a handful of politically-themed pieces this year, and this was particularly prescient considering that the Supreme Court announced during SXSW that it would hear arguments about Chiles v. Salazar that challenges the constitutionality of Colorado's ban on conversion therapy. Kostopolous is telling the story of trauma from conversion therapy, and hopes to be a part of an impact campaign that bans conversion therapy in at least one state. However this may be impossible if the Supreme Court declares conversion therapists a free speech right, even if there's little evidence that shows any merit that conversion therapy even works and is considered by Kostopolous to be a form of torture. ECHOVISION is the latest experience from multi-disciplinary artist Jiabao Li that has three major parts. The first part is a mobile-phone based mixed reality experience that does a metaphoric translation of echolocation by using LiDAR to detect your immediate physical surroundings, and then reveals it with a rippling shader that is voice activated. The second part is a video that poetically visualizes different bat calls that have been identified by AI into different contextual domains, and there's a really awesome haptic couch experience that goes along with it. The last part is a field trip to the Congress Street bridge to watch the emergence of hundreds of thousands of bats come out at night as they go to eat. I caught up Li to hear more about all of her interdisciplinary and interspecies collaborations on this piece. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality
