Joe Delagrave joins Michael Rasile on For the Love of Sports to discuss his journey to becoming the Head Coach of USA Men's Rugby Wheelchair Team, winning multiple Paralympics, and what it was like transitioning from Division 2 Football to wheelchair rugby. At 19 Joe suffered an unfortunate spinal cord injury which left him, at the time, paralyzed from the neck down. Joe went from a 6 6' tight end to sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. While he went through some dark times, Joe made the best of his situation and started a new love in wheelchair rugby. After countless hours improving his craft, Joe eventually went on to win 2 Paralympic medals for Team USA and was named team captain. Joe is now the Head Coach of the USA Men's Rugby Team and uses his skills as an intelligent player to help out those around him. With the injury, Joe has become an ambassador to Wings for Life, an organization dedicated to research for spinal cord injuries with their biggest event the Wings for Life World Run May 7th! “Rugby is something I think about all the time. But then going like, if it's gone, am I okay? If it's ripped away, like my able-bodied football career was, am I okay? In that moment, I wasn't. I had to ask, who is Joe in this new life in a wheelchair, and what's my identity? ... I think that's an important piece too, where a lot of athletes—it might not be as devastating as a paralysis, but when they're going through that eight- to 12-month rehab or a two-year rehab, or whatever it is, that identity is gone for a minute there and they have to kind of fight through and ask themselves those questions.”   Joe Delagrave has had to navigate more than one major life shift. He was a tight end at Winona State University in Minnesota, the ultimate team player, when a boating accident after his freshman year broke his neck and paralyzed him.    Several years later, he found wheelchair rugby and quickly excelled, helping the U.S. team to Paralympic bronze in London in 2012. He poured all his energy into winning gold in Rio in 2016—then, was cut from the team.    In this week's episode, he describes how he recalibrated to come back and lead Team USA to silver in Tokyo in 2021. Then, he retired from competition to become the head coach, yet another significant transition.    Through the ups and downs, he's learned there's a lot we can't control in life. But by leaning on yourself—and the support, effort, love and faith you've cultivated—you can chart your own path forward, despite obstacles.   Resources/links: Joe's website, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook page   Thank you so much to our sponsors for season 6:  Fluid Running, which has revolutionized fitness by bringing running to the deep water IceeNOW.com, which provides innovative injury prevention and recovery solutions for athletes ADAM Rehabilitation, creators of the ADAM Brace System, the most stable exercise system built to save the health of your shoulders Learn more and access exclusive discount codes for their products at buymeacoffee.com/rebound or by joining The Injured Athletes Club Facebook group.   You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Spotify, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts. Going for Gold (ft. Joe Delagrave)How an athlete turned a horrible tragedy into his greatest achievements.OPENING QUOTE:“In that split second, life changed. I go from the boat to the rescue boat, to the ambulance, to the local hospital. They med flight me up to a bigger hospital. And that's when I learned that I had a spinal cord injury, that I had broken my neck, and that I'd probably never walk again.” —Joe DelagraveGUEST BIO:Joe Delagrave is a Paralympic athlete for Team USA, a journey that introduced him to the sport of wheelchair rugby. After a casual boating accident that would have derailed most people's lives and shattered their dreams, Joe's story becomes one of purpose, passion, courage, comeback, grit, resilience, and transformation.Learn more about Joe Delagrave:Team USA BioInstagramTwitterLinkedInWebsiteCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[07:34] - Where Victory is MadeIt's not just on the field, track, or courtJoe recognizes that if he and his teammates land gold at the Paralympic Games, it won't just be the result of their work in Tokyo. It will be the 13 years of preparation, the sacrifices from players and their families and more. Many different paths must be taken to reach that destination.[10:37] - The Event that Changed EverythingAnd what came next...In 2004, Joe Delagrave was in a boat that struck the bottom of the river and sent him flying backwards in the boat, breaking his neck at vertebrae C6 and C7. His initial response was feelings of frustration and depression, but he then realized that he was wired to push through anything. So, he did.[24:28] - From ‘How Do I Get Out' to ‘How Do I Excel Where I Am'A shift of mindset transformed Joe's lifeAt first, Joe Delagrave wanted only one thing— to get out of his wheelchair. He felt that was the only way his life could begin again. Then, he pivoted, realizing— there are avenues for success while living with disability. That's when a true transformation took place, and he began to reach for his ultimate potential.[28:14] - The Power of ChoiceWhen it feels like your agency is taken away, you always have a choiceJoe could have turned to blame, to bitterness, and to a feeling of helplessness. Instead, he inspires himself and others every day to remember that you always have a choice in how you respond to tragedy or roadblocks. If you can break free from blame, you can find incredible success on the other side.[34:54] - The Danger of Identifying Yourself with Your SuccessHow Joe almost let his competitive spirit get the better of himWhen Joe began chasing gold medals in the Paralympic games, he began to think that obtaining that dream would validate him as a husband, father, leader, and community member. But he soon realized that it wouldn't do any of those things. Just as he would have to earn his victories in wheelchair rugby, he would also have to earn his victories in other areas of his life.[42:39] - You vs. Them: A Whole New MeaningWhose opinion matters to you?Joe likes to ask everyone he meets, “Are you more worried about what other people think of you, or are you more worried about actually living out your purpose?' Joe Delagrave joins me to discuss the tragic event that changed his life, wrestling with his identity in Christ and his identity as an athlete and becoming a paralympic rugby player, who will be competing in Tokyo in a few short weeks.  Questions Joe and I Discuss: (3:28) As we dive into your story, set the stage by sharing a bit about your childhood and your love of sports. (5:01) You were a college athlete, playing division II football, as a college freshman, but on July 10, 2004, a defining event took place that changed your life.  What happened? (15:00) You've said identity is something you've wrestled with throughout your life.  As a 19 year old boy relearning to do everything, how would you describe that wrestling? (22:18) How did you relationship with Jesus change from that point forward?  (28:11) How did wheelchair rugby become a part of your life? (39:48) You are training for the Tokyo ParaOlympics, how do you keep your walk with Jesus and your family priority in the midst of such intense training? (47:09) What would you like to say to someone listening who has experienced a life altering accident? Quotes to Remember: “My hands are behind my head. Kyle accidentally hits the bottom of the river….the chair broke, I flew backwards, hit my head on the front of the boat and instantly broke my neck at the C6/7 level.” ” ‘Joe, you've sustained a spinal cord injury and we need to medflight you up to the bigger hospital to have surgery.' And that's when life drastically changed.” “And really what had transpired was that verse on my wall [Proverbs 3:5-6], started to change my heart.” “It took me a long time to realize that my miracle was choosing to get in the chair.” “My miracle was a spiritual transformation that was taking place by giving my heart to Jesus.” “My success isn't defined by a gold medal. It's defined by a permanent victory in Jesus.” SHOW NOTES cont. THIS Seriously Sucks, the Right podcast when life goes seriously Wrong

Joe was a big tough college football player who's world changed when he was in a boating accident. Now he's a big tough paralympian knocking the crap out of people from his wheelchair, playing a sport called "Murderball" (Wheelchair Rugby) all over the world. His path to becoming an elite athlete again, started with putting on one sock. Now married with 3 kids and training for the next olympics, Joe talks with Nina about the dark thoughts in the days, weeks and months after being injured. Plus, his mother's embarrassing questions about sex, how he likes to make people uncomfortable, and an analogy about a pile of crap that now Nina can't 'unsee'. Joe Delegrave: Joe is one of the best wheelchair rugby players in the world. Joe is in his 12th year playing for the US Wheelchair Rugby National Team. He truly knows the meaning of overcoming obstacles after sustaining a life altering spinal cord injury on July 10, 2004. With 12 Golds, 4 Silvers, and 2 Bronze medals, Joe's success on the court translates off the court with his authentic, raw, and moving message of resilience. He challenges everyone to find opportunity in their circumstances.Circumstances do not define us, as long as we choose to be a victor over a victim. https://www.joedelagrave.comOpinions expressed in this podcast are those of Nina Sossamon Pogue and her guests, they are not a substitute for professional advice. (Excerpt from CAF-Challenged Athletes Foundation) In this episode, Joe shares his inspiring story and some insight about his rehabilitation after his accident and why the process was just as much mental as it was physical. Joe also tells us about having a victor instead of victim mentality and why inspiration can be found in what you do when you fail, compared to what you do in the moment of victory. We also talk about his upcoming olympic journey, how he has been managing life during COVID-19, the importance of putting in the work, creating good habits and much more on this inspirational episode of The White Tiger Podcast. You can find more about Joe Delagrave at:Website: https://www.joedelagrave.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jdelagrave/Instagram: @jdelagrave14Twitter: @JoeDelagraveYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3-NnGVQY7qsFPX8lOczIYw/featured
