What an unbelievable treat this was to talk with Tanner Gers. As some of you know I am going to speak at the Transform 2024 conference this year, and Tanner will be there as well. It's part of how we got introduced, and I'm so excited to share his story with you today. In this episode, Tanner shares an auto accident in 2004 that almost took his life. His vehicle collided with a tree and he sustained extensive injuries, including a shattered jaw, a broken back, the loss of one eye, and complete loss of sight in both. Imagine waking up in total darkness, not knowing at first how you got there. Tanner talks about his initial struggles adapting to his new life, and some encouraging talk from his father. We'll talk about that conversation and how Tanner not only survived this event, but how it galvanized his resolve, which led to him becoming a paralympian, and competing in the Paralympic Games. Currently, Tanner champions efforts to increase awareness for digital accessibility, staffing and recruiting, and training and certification for others with disabilities. At the core of his approach is his CAT Program - Certify/Apprentice/Transition. His story is so inspiring and I hope you enjoy it. Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com. After Tanner lost his eyesight, he was able to look inside himself and see his value and true potential. He believes that forgiveness allows us to break free from our past to create a new future. Tanner Gers has earned 4 degrees, published multiple books, started businesses, became a professional athlete, national champion in three sports, and is now a disability advocate, highly sought-after speaker, and Executive Director of My Blind Spot, a nonprofit who hires people of all abilities to test and remediate inaccessible websites and mobile apps. Here's the thing though. Tanner accomplished all of this after waking up in the hospital, at age 21, totally blind. As a disability advocate, Tanner has helped develop software so he and other blind individuals can independently access calculus equations, helped make the state of Arizona's job board accessible to users of assistive technology, and serves on the Arizona Governor's council Employment Committee for Blindness and Visual Impairment. Tanner's third conversation continues his project beyond just polluting less himself to influencing a store, in fact a whole grocery store chain. You can hear his growing enthusiasm, that the more he works on his project, the more he finds parts of it to love and act on.Do you think because he's a gold medal winner things come easier for him?On the contrary, things don't go his way. But he doesn't give up.If you try projects and they don't work out, which describes me, I think it will help to see that people as successful as Tanner don't succeed on their first tries either. I don't know about you, but when I read their books or see them on TV, their success seems more given. Here Tanner reveals that he had to regroup and restart. From my perspective, he sounds like he holds himself overly accountable, including for things outside of his control, but I also read that he found ways that work for him. Some may look for the positive. Tanner seems to look for the accountable. But listen to how his perspective turns into enthusiasm. I look forward to the next time I feel like giving up on a project that's not going my way. I'm listening to this episode.I hope you can also hear how much fun we have together. He's no more or less human than anyone. We talk about challenges, successes, Navy SEALS, and what makes a person and life great. Tanner Gers has been through more than you have, almost surely. If you want a role model for taking on challenges that you know will improve your life but you aren't sure how, listen and learn from Tanner. I wanted his conversation early because whatever most of us have been through, materially speaking, he's had it harder than most of us. I say materially speaking because emotionally and purposefully, the car accident that left him blind doesn't register as a problem. Tanner will help you grab life by the reins and forget your problems, or use them to advance. His personal challenge starts modest in this conversation but grows in later ones, so listen on. Tanner was an All-American kid growing up, excelling in school and sports, but On March 28, 2004, this All-American life should have ended during a tragic auto accident. That day, a tree shot through Tanner’s windshield, causing a traumatic brain injury, fracturing his spinal column, blowing his eye out of the socket, leaving a massive hole in his face and skull, and even with his brain exposed to the air, Tanner miraculously survived. While emergency services wrote Tanner off, he fought over 75 minutes until he made it to the hospital. His situation worsened when 19 days later, he woke up from surgery totally blind. The biggest tragedy in Tanner’s life wasn’t losing his sight. It was not taking every day by the horns and living life to the fullest like he does today. Since coming out of that fire, Tanner has graduated from college, started business ventures in food service, sales, health and fitness, consulting, professional speaking, and has been featured in media outlets such as SportingNews.com, CEO Powercast, Relaunch Show, Superhuman Entrepreneur, and Unstoppable Success Radio. Holding a degree in Business, and as an avid disability advocate, he consults and speaks for corporate, educational, and organizational clients to improve D&I, leadership, and bottom line results. Giving back and supporting the community is a high priority for Tanner, which is why he has worked with disabled youth and adults through various organizations such as Easter Seals, the Foundation for Blind Children, US Veterans Affairs, and Wounded Warriors. While Tanner has been building businesses, he’s also been building himself as an athlete. His athletic achievements include being the 2011 Para Pan American gold medalist, 2012 US Paralympic trials gold medalist, 2012 Paralympian, and a 2013 World Championship team member in track and field, 3-time National Beep Baseball Association World Series Offensive MVP, and 6-time Offensive All-Star, as well as the 2015 US National Champion in track cycling. For Tanner, it isn’t about adding up any number of achievements though. It’s about embracing his purpose and living it, by helping others recognize and achieve their true potential in every area of their life, regardless of circumstance. Tanner Gers was an All-American kid growing up, excelling in school and sports, but On March 28, 2004, this All-American life should have ended during a tragic auto accident. So many people place unrealistic limitations on themselves and don't even realize the level of self sabotage they are creating. Tanner Gers caused his personal limitations that can not be recovered, at this point in time. However, he is not letting those limitations stop him from fulfilling his dreams and living a life of Abundance. [spp-tweet tweet="I'm just Grateful for Being Me - Tanner Gers"] Tanner Gers is a professional athlete, author, consultant, speaker, certified personal trainer and a fitness nutrition specialist. Tanner’s mission is to enable all men and women to achieve their goals in health, body composition and physical performance. In 2010, he started to fulfill this mission by training and coaching developmental athletes in various sports, including volleyball, baseball, football and cross country. After having the honor and the privilege to represent the United States on the 2012 national track and field team in London, Tanner’s focus on nutrition and fitness for optimal athletic performance began to shift toward reaching optimal health. While having tremendous success with his 1-on-1 clients, Tanner wanted to reach a larger audience and began his public speaking career. Quickly becoming an accomplished and powerful speaker, Tanner continues to deliver motivational talks as well as presentations on nutrition and fitness to schools, colleges, various organizations and businesses across the United States. Even though Tanner became visually impaired from a horrible auto accident at age 21, he was determined to not be defined by his disability and still live his dreams. Since then, Tanner graduated from college, helped develop software that enables the blind to independently solve mathematical equations, consulted architecture students to improve disability access, became a professional athlete, launched www.absolutelylean.com and is living his dreams by helping others recognize and achieve their full potential. https://www.facebook.com/groups/menofabundancecommunity/ (Get in on the conversation) You can Time Travel... well kinda. What we cover: Every once in a while, you chat with someone who is truly unstoppable. And Tanner Gers is one such person. After a March 2004 car crash left him entirely blind, rather than resort to his former lifestyle, he completely reinvented himself. He weeded the Friendship Garden, he redefined and re-evaluated his priorities, and he carved out a life that included being a world class athlete. In fact, he would go on to represent the USA in the London 2012 Paralympic Games in long jump. Today, he’s the host of the uber-popular podcast, The Creative Success Show, a much sought after speaker, an author, and founder of The Athlete Summit, a membership-based online resource that lassos dozens of this planet’s foremost coaches who share insights with athletes. A fan of the late Jim Rohn, Tanner reminds us that we are the sum total of the habits of the 5 people we spend the most time with, and if that isn’t an important Titan-specific message, I don’t know what is. And remember: No matter how bad things get, they could always be worse. Thanks, Tanner. (I agreed with everything he had to say, except for how to handle the raccoons on my studio roof.)

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.-World Health Organization Click Below to Listen to Today's Show A complete physical, mental and social well-being - not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Is that truly what health is?  I tend to agree with the World Health Organization. I spoke about this in the previous episode, briefly, when I was talking about our #WorkOnWellness goals. Wellness is physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, and I would agree to throw in social as a part of that. I do think the absence of disease is also a major part of health, personally. But that isn't what the World Health Organization said. They said it's not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. I think infirmity in itself is probably the lowest of these areas that affects health. There are many people with infirmities that although that infirmity may be physical, it doesn't necessarily affect their health. They can be in great physical heath, probably better than me and many of you. They have great mental health. They have taken their adversity, their infirmity, and turned it into a positive, driving force in their success. Their infirmity has made them stronger, wiser, more mentally healthy than most of us. That is especially true about people like Tanner Gers. I am working on getting Tanner on our show for an interview. Tanner has an amazing story about how he didn't let the infirmity he has stop him from being a healthy, thriving, successful person. These are the amazing stories that prove the point the W.H.O. made. So I would agree with the W.H.O. The WHO is not part of the 3 Keys to Goal Setting Success, nor am I talking about the great rock band, The Who. They are a success in themselves. I love their music. I wish I could have seen their shows when I was younger, although I hear they still put on a great show. They play great music. I hope I play great advice and inspiration on my show. Remember, health is about a complete physical, mental and social well-being. To be healthy doesn't mean we are just free of disease and infirmity. Let's #WorkOnWellness, work on good health this year. We've discussed the 3 Keys to Goal Setting Success: The What The How, and The Why What have you learned about each one? How are you going to take these into the rest of this year and Get The Goals You Set? "The biggest tragedy in my life wasn't that I lost my sight. The biggest tragedy is that I didn't live my life, before I lost my sight, like I do today. Today I see my blindness as a gift . . ."  -Tanner Gers This episode of Influence introduces the incredible story of Tanner Gers. At age 21, Tanner was in a horrible car accident that left him blind in both eyes. Instead of giving up, Tanner took flight, finishing his degree and eventually representing the United States as a Paralympic athlete. Today, Tanner is a power-house entrepreneur with a variety of businesses centered around coaching, health, and fitness. Just listening to Tanner will inspire you to stand up, get over yourself, and do something fantastic with your life. In this episode we are going to talk about: The accident that cost Tanner his vision and how he was able to overcome such adversity. How Tanner was able to "get back up", finish his degree, and become paralympic gold medalist. The power of belief and how Tanner was able to save his own life. How to take control of your life and find greatness within you. How to view obstacles as "gifts" that can propel your life to new heights. "Everyday is a lot easier when you know it could always be worse"  -Tanner Gers MEET TANNER GERS Tanner Gers (pronounced Gears) is a published author, professional speaker, US Paralympian, founder of ABSolutely Lean, and host of The Athlete Summit. Tanner’s big mission in life is to help people across the world achieve their potential with his gift for cultivating confidence, determination, and the will to achieve greatness in life, regardless of circumstance. Oh yeah. He’s also totally blind. In 2004, Tanner experienced a horrible auto accident that left him in a coma and destroyed his ability to see. Tanner was determined to not be defined by his disability or let that prevent him from living his dreams. Tanner is an individual that embodies the idea that anyone can do anything they set their mind to and does this every day by helping others achieve their full potential. In 2010, Tanner started training and coaching developmental athletes in various sports, including volleyball, baseball, football and cross country. After having the honor and the privilege to represent the United States at the 2012 Games in London, Tanner’s focus on optimal athletic performance began to shift toward optimal health. While having tremendous success with his 1-on-1 clients, Tanner felt he could do more with his story and began his public speaking career. Quickly becoming an accomplished speaker, Tanner delivers keynotes for schools, colleges, non-profits, and corporate events across the country in addition to presentations on exercise, nutrition, and health. Motivated to help individuals worldwide, Tanner launched www.ABSolutelyLean.com and published two books, “Becoming ABSolutely Lean: The First Steps to Optimal Health, Hormones and Achieving a Lean Body,” and “ABSolutely Lean Fast Food: The Fat Loss Guide in a Fast Food Life” and released his bodyweight fitness program, ABSolutely Lean System Fitness. Today, Tanner still consults, trains and designs customized programs for women, men and youth in health, body composition, fitness and athletic performance through www.ABSolutelyLean.com.
