Is Notre Dame in? Is Army out? What is going on?! With the Fighting Irish's loss to Syracuse and the Black Knights' loss to Colgate in their respective conference semifinals on Friday, the NCAA Tournament bracket forecast was shaken like a snow globe. To help sort it out, IL's Terry Foy brings on Mark Hart, better known as @fieldystick on X and a self-described "aspiring bracketologist" to discuss the data. Other questions they consider: Is Syracuse a lock? Does Maryland have the best résumé ever? Does the No. 2 seed go to the winner of Princeton-Cornell? I always say that this Thursday to Sunday run of the conference tournaments and the Selection Show is the best four-day stretch of every lacrosse season. Teams have spent the last year working toward this, only the best teams are playing, every game is meaningful and the familiarity of playing conference rivals a second time begs for potential drama. May Madness is finally here. Let's revel in it. As always, D-Fly & Dixie are here to get you pumped up for all the games, and we'll preview the semifinal round in every single conference. We'll also talk about a few preseason Top 20 teams that didn't come close to matching the high expectations, and what comes next for those programs. In addition, we'll talk about the NCAA's all-time goal scorer, CJ Kirst, hotel front desks, the Ann Arbor lunch scene, predetermined sites hosting without the home team and much, much more. The first NPI — the NCAA Power Index, a replacement for RPI— has been released. With that has extreme implications for the NCAA Tournament and how it is seeded. Kap and Caleb are back with that, plus a ton of big-time results: Salisbury's victory over CNU, Tufts' OT thriller with Wesleyan, and a Roanoke vs. Lynchburg game that immediately was tagged as a classic. There has been goal controversy with a pair of games involving the Jumbos that the guys touch on, too. Whether it was Rutgers' upset of Maryland, Syracuse's win over Notre Dame in front of a record crowd in the Dome or Penn State's comeback at Michigan, IL's Terry Foy, Larken Kemp and Nick Ossello (who was brave enough to show up for a portion of the episode despite the Irish's loss) unpack Week 9 of the college lacrosse season. They dissect the Ivy League, from Harvard's one-sided win over Dartmouth to Yale's pivotal outcome over Penn to Cornell's closer-than-it-seemed victory vs. Brown. From there, they dive into Carolina's dominant second half vs. Virginia, then move into the quick-hitters: Gtown over Marquette in OT, High Point upsetting UMass, Loyola getting its first win over Bucknell in OT, Duke snapping its two-game losing streak and Army-Navy pitting two teams coming off wins. As we head into the month of April, Inside Lacrosse has released its first Bracketology presented by Get Reps. Based upon RPI and Strength of Schedule, I wasn't surprised at the top four (Princeton, Maryland, Notre Dame and North Carolina), but it was something to see the nation's No. 1 team, Cornell, as IL's seventh best resume and the current third-ranked team, Ohio State, on the outside of the bubble. But hey, that's why we play the games! This week there are five Top 20 matchups and one delicious Top 10 matchup for your viewing enjoyment. D-Fly & Dixie are here to get you ready. And as teams battle the week-to-week storms of April conference play, don't forget that famous old expression, “April showers bring May prowess.” Ok, maybe I just made that up, but the teams that weather and grow from conference battles always set themselves up best for the postseason. This year, Inside Lacrosse is proud to partner with the NCAA to offer you, our loyal listeners, $5 off all single-day ticket options (men and women) by using the code ILPOD at checkout. So head to NCAA.com/LaxTickets and enter ILPOD at checkout to purchase your tickets. On a weekend when the hierarchy of games wasn't immediately clear, the results didn't stop the world on its access and the season-long trends weren't upended, the boys produced what they think is — inarguably — the best Tailgate Podcast of 2025 so far. IL's Terry Foy, Nick Ossello and Larken start with a breakdown of Army's win over Carolina, discuss Notre Dame doubling up Duke, stop in College Park for Maryland's bounceback win over Penn State, then dive into what is annually one of the most anticipated matchups in the game: Syracuse at Virginia. On top of that, they examine whether it was a better for Michigan or a worse loss for Hopkins, then parse through the Ivy League, highlighted by Larken's appearance at the Brown tailgate. This year, Inside Lacrosse is proud to partner with the NCAA to offer you, our loyal listeners, $5 off all single-day ticket options (men and women) by using the code ILPOD at checkout. On the heels of Kevin Brown's Inside Lacrosse story on Friday that coaches at the IMLCA Convention discussed shortening the shot clock after a face-off win and outlawing the clamp, IL's Terry Foy talks to former Albany/Yale/Denver face-off specialist and former Rutgers face-off specialist Joe Nardella about the prospective changes, how big a deal outlawing the camp would be, what problem the coaches are trying to solve, whether FOGOs feel picked on and much more.
PLL analyst Joe Keegan joins Inside Lacrosse's Dan Kaplan and Kevin Brown to set the stage for the 2023 PLL title game between the defending champion Waterdogs and the high-powered Archers. Can the Waterdogs repeat? Will the Archers become the league's fourth title winner? From comparing overarching storylines to discussing coaching strategies and the impact of injuries, this is a must-listen.
Inside Lacrosse's Dan Kaplan and Kevin Brown welcome on both PLL championship game head coaches in Waterdogs' Andy Copelan and Archers' Chris Bates. From their thoughts on the underlying storylines with the Waterdogs' repeat bid and the Archers getting over the semifinal hump to explaining different coaching choices throughout the season, this podcast is a must listen. Bates' Archers and Copelan's Waterdogs play for the PLL title on Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. in Chester, Pa. on ABC.
Bellarmine head coach Andy Whitley joins for the sixth installment of this month's series in which IL's Terry Foy tries to answer question, "How does recruiting work?" Whitley's path to being a Division I head coach was not conventional, nor was it a straight line. He starts by explaining how he get to Louisville, then the conversation turns to June 2019, when he produced about 500 player evaluations for Inside Lacrosse's Recruiting Database when he was between his tenure as a Fairfield assistant and taking over for the Knights. Through that lens, they discuss the system and process of evaluating players, and how that's informed how Whitley and his staff approach building their roster.
It's been six weeks since IL's Terry Foy and Nick Ossello turned on the microphones, and they're back with an unusual topic (spurred by recent events on Twitter): the fraught nature of breaking lacrosse news. A part on Inside Lacrosse media strategy and a short-lived dabble for Ossello, the duo discusses what they think is the appropriate approach to breaking news. They then pivot to recapping the 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship, where Ossello called 19 games and Foy was on-site for seven days. They discuss the U.S. gold medal win over Canada, Austin Staats' star turn, the Japanese team's emergence as a medal contender and an ugly moment at the end of the Japan-England game.
