Thanksgiving: The Great American Holiday Presented by Penelope Bingham Nine out of ten Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and most do so around a family table. Food and tradition are the heart and soul of this most-loved, most-observed holiday. Thanksgiving has become the origin myth of America and the expression of deeply held American cultural ideals. As it considers the evolution of Thanksgiving, from the “First Thanksgiving” in 1621 to the present day, this program invites the audience to think about what this holiday and its food traditions mean for American culture and identity. Following lifelong passions for books and for cooking, Penelope Bingham began accumulating cookbooks over 40 years ago. Her personal collection of cookbooks now exceeds 2,000 volumes. She is particularly interested in the stories American cookbooks of the last two centuries about American culture and identity. She has given programs on American Cookbooks and Culture to libraries and cultural organizations throughout Illinois as a Road Scholar for the Illinois Humanities Council, as well as in conjunction with the Smithsonian's traveling exhibition, “Key Ingredients: America By Food”. She has also addressed the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Culinary Historians of Chicago, The Wednesday Club of the Newberry Library of Chicago, the Cookware Manufacturers Association, and home economists of Kraft Foods. Her work with American Cookbooks and Culture was recently featured in Chicago Magazine and on WBBM/TV's “Table For Two”. Since 1990, she has been the volunteer “Cookbook Lady” for the Annual Book Fair of the Newberry Library of Chicago, preparing for sale the thousands of vintage cookbooks that are donated each year. Penelope holds degrees from Wellesley College and the University of Chicago. She is a member of the Culinary Historians of Chicago and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tom Higgenson over Zoom video! Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL, Tom Higgenson is best known as the lead singer of the Plain White T’s, most famous for their acoustic hit, Hey There Delilah. The band received two Grammy nominations for the song, and quickly achieved notoriety around 2006. More recently, the T’s released an independent record in 2015, American Nights, and a synth-heavy pop record in 2018, Parallel Universe. The latter album inspired Tom to branch out on his own in a solo project he named Million Miler. His 80’s-inspired synth-pop tracks are straight out of Stranger Things or Back to the Future. Million Miler has released six singles so far, but keep an eye on him because big things are coming this spring….Long before “Milly”, though, Tom started a punk rock band with fellow Plain White T, Dave Tirio. They joined forces with their childhood pals, Darren and Eric Vorel, to form TLB, formerly known as That Lying Bitch. Now a trio, Higgenson and the Vorel brothers released TLB’s sophomore album, Blood & Sand, on Halloween.Beyond TLB and Million Miler, the label also writes with Chicago-based dream pop duo Fairview and dance pop solo artist Jessica Jarrell, all of whom are signed to Tom’s record label, Humans Were Here. Currently, Tom can be found hosting a weekly solo live stream on the Plain White T’s Facebook page, a show he has dubbed “The Wednesday Club”. Fans vote on a set list each week, from Grammy-nominated hits to no-longer-available deep tracks.Tom can be found on Instagram @higgypop.We want to hear from you! As World War 2 progressed and the Nazis suffered a reversal of fortune, plots against Adolf Hitler began to multiply. After the defeat of the German Army at Stalingrad in particular, many officers began to see the Führer as the problem and the war as unwinnable. Assassination became the answer.Long before the July ’44 bomb plot, individuals were stepping forward with their own plans and with bombs in their pockets. In March 1943, there were three distinct attempts on Hitler’s life, including the famous ‘brandy bottle bombs’ scenario.British and American intelligence too had early plans for the death of Hitler. The heads of MI6 and the OSS even met with Admiral Wilhelm Canaris in the summer of 1943 to discuss the potential for the Führer’s violent demise. Yet the plans foundered and the Allies opted for a strategy of invasion and unconditional German surrender. Ultimately, it was Hitler who took his own life and brought the war to its eventual close. So it GoesTom Assheton & James Jackson https://www.instagram.com/bloodyviolenthistory/https://www.jamesjacksonbooks.comhttps://www.tomtom.co.uk If you enjoy the podcast, would you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes, Spotify or Google Podcast App?
