#1032 | Ed and Dharnish preview the season with a focus on how United's tactics are evolving under Michael Carrick. The pattern in pre-season has been more possession, more central possession, and an emphasis on third-man runs.  Where Carlos Baleba fits is still unclear: he's more carrier than passer, so the assumption is someone else, Kobbie Mainoo or Youri Tielemans, drops in to start moves while Baleba operates further forward.  The bigger worry is pressing. Pushing fullbacks and forwards higher creates gaps between midfield and defence, and neither Bruno Fernandes nor Marcus Rashford presses well enough to close them, though Baleba's mobility should help cover the space.  Up front, the squad is deep enough that losing Benjamin Sesko to injury or rotation shouldn't be a big problem, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and a returning Rashford all able to play through the middle. 0:00 Introduction and season preview

#1030 | Ed and Wayne are back for the season preview after a mixed pre-season: two wins from six and a 4-2 defeat to Milan in the last match. Neither is panicking about that result specifically, but it exposed problems that were already there. The defence is the biggest concern. Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire remain first choice and neither has the legs for a higher, more front-foot approach, while Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt can't be relied on for fitness. Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro have the potential to solve those problems but it's a big ask for two young players.  There's a different problem in midfield: plenty of technical quality in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, not enough physicality to handle the games that get scrappy.  United need two more signings before deadline day, a genuine upgrade at left-back and a proper ball-winner in midfield, to have a real shot at matching last season's third-place finish. Without them, expect some regression with a much busier schedule.  They finish with a run through the rest of the league: Arsenal have strengthened again, Liverpool are an interesting watch under Iraola with the Bezos ownership question in the background, Spurs have spent big, and nobody fancies predicting what Chelsea will do. 0:00 Six games, one freak-out 1:50 A disjointed pre-season 9:44 Shaw and Maguire: the defensive issue 15:09 Carrick's tactical direction 17:33 Midfield's missing ball-winner 27:28 Lacey: keep or loan? 34:33 Dorgu, Sesko and Zirkzee 40:31 What United need before deadline day 51:17 Rivals: Arsenal 54:07 Rivals: City after Guardiola 1:00:06 Rivals: Liverpool and Iraola's scalability 1:04:04 Bezos, Liverpool and the TV deal 1:11:37 Rivals: Spurs 1:14:23 Rivals: Newcastle 1:15:53 Rivals: Chelsea 1:18:00 Wrap-up If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. PSG beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg last night as they won their second consecutive UEFA Super Cup, but 17-year-old Brian Madjo stole the headlines. The teenager has been through endless amounts of red tape to get clearance to play first team football and after a goal and a superb performance, we can see why. It wasn't enough to dampen PSG though, as usual suspects Kvicha Kvaratshkelia and Desire Doue scored to win it for PSG. Elsewhere, Man United drew 1-1 with Leeds in Dublin as the game was disrupted by teenagers wanting selfies with Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans. How pre-season is that? Aston Villa face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final at Stadion Salzburg on Wednesday 12 August — Europa League holders against Champions League holders. An unlikely win will lift Villa up a tier in English teams in terms of European royalty, as not many can boast two Super Cup wins to their name. This week's episode asks the question the squad list can't quite answer yet: is Emery's side actually ready, with the transfer window still open and noticeably weaker than in recent seasons due to injuries and World Cup returning player doubts. The team-news picture is complicated. Lucas Digne's move to PSG has finally been made official, weeks after it was widely reported as done. Johan Manzambi is a confirmed absentee, having knee treatment with no return date given. And the three World Cup finalists — Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins — are only just back in training (we hope) after three weeks off, leaving Unai Emery to decide how much to risk from the opening whistle.Villa have five players missing from the XI who started Villa's last competitive meeting with PSG — Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and Digne - and there hasn't been an upgrade on any of the positions. If nothing else, the game will provide an unflinching assessment of where the squad actually stands with just over two weeks to go to the new season. At best, Villa, with a bit of luck will carry on their proud unbeaten European final history.Odds, history, and one very specific plan for Alejandro Garnacho — this week's episode has the full build-up before kick-off.Get three months free and huge savings on a two-year NordVPN plan here Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. On this week's episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett begin their 2026/27 Premier League season preview, taking an in-depth look at the first ten clubs alphabetically as the new campaign approaches. From champions Arsenal and a reshaped Chelsea, to newly promoted Coventry City, European hopefuls and teams simply looking to survive, Martin and Neil assess the transfers, managers, expectations and biggest questions facing each club. The preview begins with reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, as Martin and Neil discuss Mikel Arteta's attempts to retain the title following a season which also saw the Gunners reach the Champions League Final. New arrivals including Bruno Guimarães are assessed, while the pair discuss Arsenal's unsuccessful pursuit of Vinícius Júnior, whether the Premier League is still attracting the world's biggest individual stars, and whether a long domestic and European campaign followed by the FIFA World Cup could finally catch up with Arteta's squad. Attention then turns to Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton. Unai Emery faces another period of change at Villa Park following the departures of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Martin and Neil assess whether Villa can maintain their place among Europe's elite. They also look at Bournemouth's latest rebuild, Brentford's attempts to build on an impressive season and Brighton's seemingly endless ability to identify new talent while continuing to compete in Europe. In Martin's Letter From The Gantry, Martin returns to the commentary box for Colchester United against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, but the story extends far beyond the result. Following Southampton's expulsion from the Championship playoffs and the fallout from their controversial "Spygate" scandal, Martin reflects on a club attempting to rebuild trust, recover from an extraordinary punishment and turn adversity into motivation for another promotion challenge. The Premier League preview then resumes with Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham. Chelsea begin a new era under Xabi Alonso after a dramatic summer of transfer activity, including the British record arrival of Morgan Rogers, while former Chelsea captain and manager Frank Lampard prepares to lead Championship winners Coventry back into the Premier League. Martin and Neil assess what constitutes success for both clubs before turning their attention to Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham. Away from the individual clubs, Martin and Neil attempt to make sense of the Premier League's new financial landscape. With Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) replaced by Squad Cost Ratio rules (SCR), they explain the new spending limits and debate whether football's financial regulations genuinely protect clubs or simply make it harder for ambitious sides such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa to challenge the established elite. Finally, with the Premier League season rapidly approaching, the pair debate one of the biggest consequences of the summer's FIFA World Cup. Players involved in the latter stages of the tournament are only now returning to their clubs, leaving some with just two weeks of pre-season training before the new campaign begins. Is that enough preparation for a Premier League footballer, or are clubs risking injuries and exhaustion before the season has even properly started? Martin and Neil, unsurprisingly, don't quite agree. #PremierLeague #PremierLeaguePreview #PremierLeague2026 #MartinTyler #FootballPodcast #Arsenal #Chelsea #AstonVilla #CoventryCity #CrystalPalace #Everton #Fulham #Brighton #Brentford #Bournemouth #MikelArteta #XabiAlonso #FrankLampard #MorganRogers #BrunoGuimaraes #ViniciusJunior #TransferNews #FIFAWorldCup #PSR #Football #TheJoyOfFootball Hosted by The Revive Lounge Ltd UCsdye1hUxP4xhgBx9zvuSjg Subscribe to https://youtube.com/@TheReviveLounge?si=L5ddzrJrtSmErtJ5 Support the Pod https://patreon.com/TheJoysofFootballPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink Read us on Substack https://martintylerandneilbarnett.substack.com/ Follow our Twitter https://x.com/TheJOF Follow our Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@joy_of_football_pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Follow our Instagram https://https://www.instagram.com/joy_of_football_pod/ Contact us via: therevivelounge@gmail.com Music by Arron Clague - https://www.instagram.com/arronclague?igsh=aHg1bjQ3OHpmaXIz Intro Sequence by Wellong Sadewo (wells.illustration): https://www.instagram.com/wells.illustration/ A massive thank you to our Patreon Supporters: Nick Parmenter Hillary Abbott Daniel Butigan Tommy Mck Katie Watson Nathan A Learn more about your ad choices. Just over a fortnight out from the Premier League opener at Brighton, this week's episode asks the question Villa's midfield can't avoid: is it actually good enough for the Champions League and this season? Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers are both gone. João Gomes and, everyone hopes, Johan Manzambi are meant to replace them — not like for like, but as a different way of playing altogether. The conversation works through the practical questions first. Is Gomes the same kind of deep-lying orchestrator Tielemans was, or something with more bite and less silk? Can Boubacar Kamara handle a full season without breaking down again, and would shifting him fractionally further forward protect him or just expose someone else? Where does Manzambi actually play — box-to-box eight, wide left, or as the ten Villa haven't reliably had since Rogers' best form — and does Alejandro Garnacho's arrival settle that question or complicate it further? It broadens from there into the harder conversation underneath all of it: whether this is a refresh or a genuine rebuild, and whether a club can safely attempt one of those in the same summer it returns to the Champions League. There's also the cautionary tales of clubs like West Ham and Spurs, and indeed historic Villa, in terms of what can come on the heels of European glory. No predictions or certainty — just an honest account of how much of this squad remains genuinely unknown with the season weeks away.UTVSubscribe to AVWTF - www.astonvilla.wtf Sharp and informative Villa writing for supporters who can spot the clickbait from the back of the Holte.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. #1028 | A new head coach, a new fan zone, and a transfer market on hold? Ed and Wayne talk about United's new Women's team coach, Eva Olid, who has joined after Marc Skinner's exit. What is Skinner's legacy after 5 years at the club? He achieved Champions League qualification and won the FA Cup, despite restrictions on the club's budget. And yet, there won't be too many tears shed for a manager who rubbed a lot of players and fans up the wrong way with his personality. Olid arrives on a deal to June 2028, fresh from a first-ever SWPL title at Hearts last season. Her record with young players inside a small budget is a strong coaching profile but it also sounds like a job description written by United's finance department. Then on to the club's relationship with fans. The new Paddock fan zone will welcome 1,300 fans just behind the Stretford End, opening in the autumn subject to planning approval. Is this cynical profiteering by the club or an attempt to boost the match day atmosphere? At a time when the club feels like it's at war with fans, there's been a mixed reaction. ➡️ Watch Martin's Speech HERE: https://youtu.be/sAKz353_MGU?si=-i8i9K4B8a4xuqqW On this week's episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett leave the FIFA World Cup behind and return to domestic football as attention turns to the start of a brand-new club season. Back together in the Kingston Kitchen, the pair begin by reflecting on a very special honour for Martin, after Woking Football Club named their academy facility the Martin Tyler Performance Centre, before discussing the next chapter in English football. In We Need To Talk About, Martin and Neil examine the changing landscape of pre-season tours. Why are more Premier League clubs staying closer to home? Are long-haul commercial tours still worthwhile? And how much should the recent FIFA World Cup influence clubs' preparations? They compare the travel schedules of every Premier League side, debate the Community Shield's move to Cardiff, and discuss the balance between commercial success and player welfare. The discussion then turns to one of football's most controversial subjects: signing young players. With clubs securing deals for teenage talents years before they can officially join, Martin and Neil debate whether football is protecting young footballers or placing too much pressure on them too early. Featuring discussion around Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, J.J. Gabriel, Benji Flowers and the future of youth development. In Three of the Best, Martin and Neil each pick their favourite summer transfers, selecting the best young signing, experienced signing, and overall transfer of the window. The conversation features Youri Tielemans, Callum Wilson, Daizen Maeda, Chris Summerville, Yann Diomande and more, as they explain which moves could have the biggest impact on the 2026/27 season. Martin's Letter From The Gantry celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Premier League, with Martin taking listeners back to the opening weekend of the inaugural 1992 season. He recalls commentating on Leeds United, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Wimbledon, remembers Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, Teddy Sheringham, Brian Dean and many of the Premier League's first overseas stars, before reflecting on just how dramatically English football has changed over the last three and a half decades. Finally, in Stoppage Time, the pair break down the latest IFAB law changes and new refereeing interpretations for the upcoming season, including VAR, throw-ins, substitutions, treatment times, red card reviews and more, explaining what supporters should expect when the new campaign kicks off. Fresh off their 11-city Breakaway Tour, Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros return to the studio to process the post-World Cup soccer landscape. Christian kicks off the episode with an unbelievable travel horror story about a chaotic flight delay from Miami to Dallas involving an intoxicated passenger, an unruly accusation, and an emergency flight attendant swap. The hosts then dive into a blueprint for the future, detailing radical ways to overhaul US Soccer and turn the USMNT into legitimate contenders for the 2030 World Cup—from ending pay-to-play under Arsène Wenger and merging CONCACAF with CONMEBOL to creating a 50-state "States Cup" tournament. Next, the guys welcome USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams for an exclusive, wide-ranging interview. Tyler breaks his silence on the team's World Cup exit against Belgium, setting the record straight on what really went down in camp when Folarin Balogun's red card suspension was rescinded 20 hours before kickoff. He reflects on Mauricio Pochettino's front-foot tactical philosophy, reveals why Pochettino declaring he "wished he was American" after singing Country Roads was his favorite team memory, and details his ongoing community mini-pitch initiative with Allstate. Finally, the hosts analyze the summer transfer window frenzy and critique the latest kit drops across world football. They break down major moves including Morgan Rogers' £117M transfer to Chelsea, Anthony Gordon joining Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski signing with the Chicago Fire, and Casemiro's move to Inter Miami amid LA Galaxy discovery-rights drama. They close out the show with a look at Manchester City and Real Madrid's roster overhauls, Sebastian Berhalter's transfer to Middlesbrough, and a fashion breakdown of the best and worst jerseys of the season.   Timestamps: (00:00) — Post-Tour Return & Christian's Wild Flight Delay Story (12:29) — 10 Ways to Fix the USMNT & Win the 2030 World Cup (41:46) — Tyler Adams Exclusive: Balogun Red Card Drama, Poch's Impact & Belgium Defeat (51:49) — Blockbuster Transfers: Morgan Rogers to Chelsea & Anthony Gordon to Barça (01:01:41) — MLS Transfer Chaos: Casemiro, Lewandowski & Sebastian Berhalter (01:13:20) — European Giants Overhaul: Man City's Rebuild & Real Madrid's Free Transfers (01:20:26) — Kit Reviews: Best & Worst Jersey Drops of the Season Subscribe to The Cooligans on your favorite podcast app:

Aston Villa's transfer window has gone from silent to frantic inside a week. Youri Tielemans has had his £35m release clause triggered to join Manchester United, Lucas Digne has had his release clause triggered to, as he's heading to join Paris Saint-Germain, and Johan Manzambi is arriving from SC Freiburg. We look at what frames it all, the restrictive UEFA settlement Villa have in place and the fact they desperately need to refresh an aging squad, that is one of the oldest in the Premier League. This week's episode gets into why Villa are moving on two influential, well-liked players in the same week, and why that's a rational response to the situation rather than a sign of panic. There's a breakdown of the numbers behind the Tielemans exit — the release clause nobody outside the club knew about, the pure profit it books, the wages it clears — and why Digne's move to PSG might be the cleanest piece of business Villa do all summer. Then we get into what the incoming Johan Manzambi is all about. There's also time for the parts of the summer that aren't about the pitch: the Visit Rwanda shirt sponsorship and the ethics around it, and progress on the North Stand rebuild.UTVAston Villa are still selling sponsorless shirts here - https://aston-villa-store.sjv.io/6kdvWb - if you don't want 'Visit Rwanda' on it.Get MOMS in your inbox every Friday, free. Daniel and Jason each independently rebuilt Chelsea from scratch — same £1 billion budget, same rule: only sign players who were actually available during BlueCo's tenure. What they found out about their own club is not flattering. We've been threatening to do this episode for about a year, and we finally sat down and did it: rebuild the entire Chelsea squad using only transfers that were realistically available since BlueCo took over in the 2022–23 window through last winter. Same rough budget as the real thing — just under £1.5 billion, since that's what's actually been spent — and we did it completely independently, without comparing notes beforehand. The RulesNothing unrealistic. No Erling Haaland, no Kylian Mbappé — just players Chelsea could conceivably have gotten given the timing and their wage structure. Beyond that, anything goes.Defense: A Back Four That Could Have Played Together for Four YearsBoth of us kept Levi Colwill without question. From there it diverges into “what if” territory: Cristian Romero (Cucurella's Tottenham countryman) as one option at center back for the money Chelsea actually spent on Wesley Fofana, alongside cheaper alternatives like Gleison Bremer and Josko Gvardiol — both of whom were on the table for less than what Chelsea paid for Axel Disasi or Benoît Badiashile. At left back, it's Marc Cucurella against the tantalizing alternative universe where Chelsea signs Nuno Mendes instead — now arguably the best left back in the world — plus a nod to keeping Ian Maatsen around instead of selling him off.Midfield: The Two Nobody Argues WithMoises Caicedo and Cody Palmer were the two names both of us kept without hesitation — Caicedo for £116m looks like one of the better bits of business BlueCo has actually done, and Palmer, whatever you think of the scouting behind it, has been the one genuine coup. From there, the discussion opens up into names Chelsea could have had for a fraction of the outlay on Romeo Lavia, Dário Essugo, or Carney Chukwuemeka — including a free transfer for Christian Eriksen that was floated on this podcast for months before Chelsea ignored it.Wide Areas: Same Brain, Same AnswerIndependently, we both landed on Raphinha for the left wing — a name Chelsea were actually linked with around the same price point. The right wing is where it gets painful: Chelsea's actual buy in that window was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Michael Olise was there for the taking and slipped away purely over wages. We also dig into whether Olise or Pedro Neto is the better player today, and what it means that Chelsea ended up paying more for the worse option.Strikers: João Pedro Stays, But Look at Who Got AwayJoão Pedro remains the starter in both our rebuilds, but the exercise turns up striker options Chelsea could have had for less than what they eventually spent — Dominic Solanke, Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyökeres, and Jørgen Strand Larsen all get a mention as players who were on the market at some point during BlueCo's reign and went elsewhere. The Bench, and the Real NumbersWe round out both squads with backups at every position — Matheus Nunes, Adam Wharton, Youri Tielemans, Martín Zubimendi, and even Granit Xhaka (available for a fraction of what Sunderland reportedly wants for him now) all show up as realistic squad depth options. Then we do the sobering part: laying out, window by window, everything BlueCo has actually bought and sold since 2022 — and it is a genuinely rough list to read back. Almost a billion and a half spent, barely half of that recouped in sales, and a scouting department that, by our count, has produced maybe six good buys and three academy graduates in four years. Everything else is filed under “just terrible business.” This is a public episode. The USMNT's World Cup run comes to a crashing, embarrassing halt after a 4-1 dismantling by Belgium in the Round of 16. Hosts Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros try to process a complete tactical and fundamental capitulation on home soil. Despite winning the possession battle with 57%, the Americans looked paralyzed by fear and completely disconnected on the pitch. This allowed a heavily rotated Belgian squad playing without Kevin De Bruyne or Jérémy Doku to exploit amateur defensive errors from start to finish. MLS on Apple TV analyst Taylor Twellman joins the studio to deliver a brutal reality check on the current state of US Soccer. The guys pull no punches dissecting individual disasters, including Sergiño Dest's fatal ball-watching on Belgium's early goals and 38-year-old Tim Ream being targeted and posterized in aerial duels. They also analyze Christian Pulisic's rough night where he was dispossessed 11 times before exiting with a calf injury. This left Malik Tillman as the lone starting bright spot after scoring the USA's solitary goal. Beyond the pitch, the crew debates the psychological toll of the Folarin Balogun red-card reinstatement saga and Donald Trump's external political meddling. Looking ahead to the future, they review Mauricio Pochettino's cryptic post-match comments regarding his uncertain future with the federation. They debate what structural changes—from youth academy coaching overrides to a high-pressure promotion and relegation culture—are desperately needed to bridge the gap between American athleticism and elite international football intelligence. The guys dive deep into how Mauricio Pochettino should handle the devastating absence of Folarin Balogun following his controversial red card. They debate whether Ricardo Pepi is the plug-and-play solution or if a wild false-nine experiment utilizing Christian Pulisic or Weston McKennie is the tactical key to unlocking a struggling Belgian side. Beyond the USMNT camp, breaking news hits the show as rumors swirl around Jurgen Klopp potentially taking over the German National Team.
