Episode #87 Julie Austin Shares Useful Tips in Building a Creative Roadmap for Your Business In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur, Julie Austin, a well-known specialist on the subject of creative innovation, shares with Yeukai Kajidori her experiences and insights on building her own business and how she was able to overcome the roadblocks that she had to face along the way.    Key Questions Asked: How did Julie get started with her business and at what point did she decided she wanted to run her own business? What Julie’s product and how well had she done with that product? What sort of mind-set did Julie have when she was starting out and invented this particular product? What sort of things did she do to keep herself from giving up when faced with roadblocks? What necessary steps does one need to take in starting an innovative business? Why is it important to have a prototype version of your product? After creating a prototype, what would be the next step for somebody who is on this journey? At what point did Julie scale things up in her business?   Highlights of lessons learned: Finding opportunities Without so much of an educational background, Julie did not think twice to go on in building her business and marketing her own product. As a new entrepreneur, there are a lot of things about business that you would not necessarily know until you get into it. You just have to go with the flow and sell where the demand is.Ideas and opportunities are literally everywhere, even in a bad or a good economy, it doesn’t matter because it’s all about finding opportunities.   Three Steps Forward First thing to do is in setting up an innovative business is to make sure that no one else has invented this product, do some research and check for an existing patent. The second step to setting up an innovative business is to make a prototype and create a visual representation of your product. To making online marketing as a first priority when selling your product will save you a lot of time and money and will eventually attract huge commercial stores to call on you instead of the other way around.   Ideas and Motivation Angela thought that if she can use her product, then a lot of other people could use it too, which motivated her to keep pushing through the roadblocks.“Pyramiding up” means if you start with a small amount of product and sell that, you can take some of that money and you slowly build your business up.Julie realized that writing a business plan would not have worked for her business had she thought about doing it in the beginning.

This conversation with best-selling New York Times author and Ted talk speaker Julie Lythcott-Haims was over two years in the making and yet came just at the right time. Author of How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success and Real American: A Memoir, Julie’s interested in the human experience and writes non-fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry with the aim of helping humans thrive. She has a JD from Harvard Law School, an MFA in writing from California College of the Arts and holds her BA in American Studies from Stanford University, where she later returned to serve as Dean of Freshman and Undergraduate Advising, among other roles.  She currently lives in Silicon Valley with her partner of more than thirty years, her two teenagers, and her mother. Born to an African-American father and a British mother, Julie moved often in her childhood from Nigeria to New York to Wisconsin to Washington D.C., where her father was part of the Carter Administration, and then back to Wisconsin again. Along the way, she struggled to find her identity as a bi-racial woman who faced stereotypes and micro-aggressions about her blackness that sent her on a journey from self-loathing to self-love, something she reflects on with powerful honesty in her memoir. Themes of self-exploration, self-sufficiency and service weave thread through this incredibly enriching conversation with Julie. We discuss her healing journey with her mother and how that impacts how she parents her children today. Julie shares the lessons that she learned about how to successfully raise adults from her years as the Dean at Stanford and extensive research that informs her best-selling book and popular Ted talk on the subject. She reveals the way that she has daringly made career pivots that others thought were crazy, what’s next on the horizon for her, and how she may even create her own radio show one day. And, we talk candidly about her journey to embracing self-care, about her commitment to her partner of over thirty years, and to the impact on her body and sexuality of moving toward menopause. I was struck by Julie’s continued evolution in her own awareness, and her commitment to personal growth and to pursuing her own purposeful path, parallels evident in the wisdom she holds for us about how to raise our children to be healthy adults. Finally, I’m inspired by her bold challenge to us, to look at how stereotypes and biases about black people show up in ourselves, and to do the conscious work of taking them apart. This conversation is a powerful one that has already begun to shift my awareness. I look forward to hearing what Julie’s life lessons, wisdom, and revelations shift for you when you listen.  Much appreciation,  P.S. Know someone who you think would appreciate this episode? Push forward and share this conversation! In This Episode We Talk About: Julie’s journey of healing with her mother, now 80 years old, and how a third chapter of their relationship led to reciprocal learning across three generations, between Julie’s mother, Julie, and Julie’s daughter. What happens when our egos impact our parenting and the power of realizing that we are not our kids; they’re not a mini-me, a pet, a trophy or a bonsai tree. They are their own person. What Julie’s experience as a Stanford Dean taught her about how to raise adults, including the two most essential things she learned kids need: to do chores and to be loved. How a commitment to life-long learning inspired Julie to make daring career pivots, from attorney to school administrator to writer. The three more books  that Julie knows she has inside of her. Julie’s own evolution in her understanding of what self-care means and the ways that she invests in herself today. The practices Julie has committed to with her husband to keep their thirty plus year connection strong. The impact of peri-menopause and menopause in how we feel in our bodies and on our libido in particular, and my commitment to focus a future episode on this subject. The importance of becoming aware of the stereotypes we hold about black people and Julie’s challenge to us to consciously undo them. Then, follow Julie’s invitation to notice when stereotypes about black people kick in for us. She says, “If you’re not loving black people, ask yourself why? Be interested in that. Black people are humans worthy of love, compassion and care like anybody else is. If you notice a stereotype kicks in when you see a black person, see if you can immediately say to yourself – what would I do if this was a white person? Or a person of any race other than black? When a stereotype pops up, name it and tell yourself I’m discarding it. Try interacting with that person as if they were your own brother, sister, grandmother, father, friend or family.”  It’s our job to acknowledge the impact of stereotypes and biases and undo it. The Intimate Lifestyle yearns to help everyone in finding their ideal relationships, fixing existing ones, and simply understanding one's self better. We've provided in the past few episodes the best resources to aid with dating, matchmaking, and even breakups. This time, we have a key resource joining the show to dig a little deeper into our belief systems. I'm honoured to have Julie Turner – life coach, matchmaker, and hypnotherapist – on this episode. We will talk about our motivations in life and the unseen things which causes the challenges we encounter. Somewhere along the mix we also professed our love for Ford and discussed our musical abilities (mostly her abilities and my lack thereof). Listen until the very end as I share a secret to getting girls (not my secret though, some other guy's). Topics that sprung up on this longer than usual conversation include: How our ego is a protective mechanism that keeps us safe but could also result in our fears and anxieties (02:44). Kids' process of understanding and its relationship to Neuro-Linguistic Programming for adults (08:06). How Julie got interested in hypnotherapy and integrating with her existing coaching career (11:54). What hypnosis really is and what it does to our consciousness (14:01). Resisting hypnosis and the best candidates for hypnosis (19:58). Why I prefer using the term unconscious when referring to the subconscious (21:22). The beginnings of a belief system, how it can sabotage your relationships, and listening to your authentic self (25:16). The process of developing your life's metanarrative and the fallacy of generalization (28:08). Overcoming being victimized by our belief systems and how the universe conspires so we see things clearer (31:17). A story that illustrates how the ego "protects" an individual based on one's learned behavior (34:21). Distinguishing ego from intuition, and the perils of labeling everything (39:16). Blurring relationship labels and how the concept of forever can be ruining human relationships (43:58). Applying hypnotherapy to help people to get the relationships they truly want or fix current ones (49:56). The importance of ruffling some feathers and challenging the status quo (59:14). How unhappiness is brought about by assumptions and expectations (1:02:20). What Julie sees as the general difference between men and women's approach to relationships (1:06:09). I enjoyed talking to Julie so much! It is kind of uncanny how much of our thoughts and beliefs matched. I like her so much I unleashed my creepy virginal teenage boy persona on her… I might have a crush on her (or is she the female version of me?).
