Carol Vander Stoep is a orofacial myofunctional therapist clinical dental hygienist and has written a book called Mouth Matters; Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body: How Your Mouth Ages Your Body and What YOU Can do About It. Carol Vander Stoep joined us from Austin Texas today to talk about the dangers of mouth breathing, reversing sleep apnea with orofacial myofunctional therapy. Carol is a fascinating woman to say the least. Here's why I liked her so much... She talks about a whole different side of biological dentistry than anybody else we've ever talked to. Sure she's into conventional holistic dental practices like being mercury free, using ozone, removing root canals and cavitations. For those that don't know biological dentistry (or sometimes called whole body dentistry) takes into account how the teeth affect different organs through acupuncture meridian points in the body. Each tooth can resonate or "reflex" to different organs. Taking it a step further poor organ function can affect the health of the teeth. Our body is a whole unit. We are much more than machines. We are energetic light bodies that vibrate in space and time. But she takes things a step further. Actually many steps further. Carol Vander Stoep talks about how our breathing can not only affect physiological processes in the body (like oxygen transfer into red blood cells and carbon dioxide regulation) but also the physical shape of the face and airway. Is it possible to change the shape of our face by where our tongue is placed in our mouth? Not only is it possible but she's doing it! Carol explained how the cause of many obstructive sleep apnea cases is inadequate airway development during children's formative years from three particularly destructive oral postures: mouth breathing, resting the tongue on the floor of the mouth, and an incorrect swallow. A three dimensional skeletal contraction from these three habits allow the tongue to be, “A 600 pound tiger in a 3 foot cage,” she says, so people literally choke on their tongues at night. Myofunctional therapy helps children learn correct oral posture so they attain optimal facial development, and can help adults as well as children change their airways and ”freeway space” for their tongues! Together with functional orthodontics or a dental sleep appliance like the Full Breath Solution, many people have solved their sleep apnea simply! Orofacial myofunctional therapy is very very interesting to say the very least. We discussed how Buteyko breathing skills go hand in hand with myofunctional therapy. Buteyko breathing reverse the ravages to physiology brought about by mouth breathing. Carol is really at the cutting edge of this field. This week we travel to Eastern Kentucky to the town of Morehead in our quest to explore cool independent bookstores in our region. Morehead is home to a little over 7,000 residents and Morehead State University. The university as well as the regional medical center in town give the community a diverse makeup. And it's location inside Daniel Boone National Forest and the head of the Sheltowee Trace Trail make it a tempting destination for folks who like to hike, hunt, fish, and soak up nature. Our guest, Susan Thomas, is a managing partner and owner of CoffeeTree Books and the Fuzzy Duck Coffee Shop which have been a family business for over 20 years. It has morphed several times and is now housed in the town's old single screen movie theater on Main Street. They have transformed the space to include a coffee shop in the old concession area, event space at the stage, and a business office in the old projector room, not to mention everything you would expect to see in a bookstore. But they have been creative with their space and have included a store within a store. CoffeeTree is also a destination for locals looking for supplies for fiber arts like knitting. They carry high quality yarns and classes for knitters. Susan is a knitter herself and wanted to offer products she used to have to travel over an hour to purchase. And while there weren't initially many knitters in Morehead, Susan and others have nurtured a whole crop of townspeople anxious to learn and create. Susan tells us why books and yarn aren't the strangest store within a store concept in town, why she has an affinity for books about bees, and why moving back to her hometown after 16 years in Nashville is a decision she hasn't once regretted. Books mentioned in this episode: 1- The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett 2- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 3- Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer 4- Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald 5- The Storied Life of A J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin 6- The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald 7- Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life by Steve Martin 8- Outliers by Malcom Gladwell 9- The New One: Painfully True Stories From a Reluctant Dad by Mike Birbiglia and J. I've been reading Mike Allred comics pretty much since I got into comics, he's as classic to me as ska and ska/punk. He's a guy that makes me still love superhero comics, while bringing his indie idealism into the fold. Kinda like a lot of these bands. Kill Lincoln and Bite Me Bambi are taking that ska/punk sound and totally elevating it! And there's also great tracks from Shandon, King Kong 4, the Skajects, and Smoke Like a Fish rounding out this episode like Laura Allred's colors round out Mike's line work! The Red Wemette Story of The Chicago Outfit is for you. It is a veritable proof that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction! A fascinating, firsthand account of events in the life and times of William “Red” Wemette—the longest Organized Crime undercover informant [other than for espionage] for the FBI in U.S. History who spent eighteen years as an FBI mole. This book details how he did what he did, and why. It also settles, once and for all, the question of whether he is an actual person rather than a contrived governmental construct, as some federal agents believed. Take a look through the eyes of a man who has lived the life that most people can hardly imagine. He details his firsthand interactions with hitmen, murderers, thieves, and extortionists [from both sides of the law] in a never-before revealed series of stories that share insights and historical perspectives on the colorful excursions of the Chicago Mafia—more accurately known as “The Outfit.” Intriguing details of his role in the Family Secret's Trial, the take down of one of the Outfit's most feared, nationwide hitmen, Frank Schweihs, and the forty-year-old triple homicide that sparked Cold Case files in Cook County and throughout the U.S. This book is a must-have for law enforcement officers, lawyers, politicians, historians, or anyone who wants the truth behind the Hollywood hype found in the many movies or books that cover “The Chicago Way” of doing business across the country.

Today's episode falls into our ‘body' category — in particular, the health of our skin! Admittedly, this is an area where I actually have a fair bit of ignorance. Hang tight everybody! Today's episode was a doozy! I was joined by Corey Deacon, the co-founder and Medical Director of Neurvana Health, a clinic in Calgary that focuses on brain health and something called Quantitative EEG (qEEG). Now, Corey's credentials are exhaustive! He has a Doctorate in Natural Medicine, he's a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and he's a member of The Examining Board of Natural Medicine Practitioners Canada™. Corey has extensive experience exploring how lifestyle has an effect on brain health. And not just brain health as it pertains to concussions or trauma, but as it pertains to anxiety, depression, ADD, and some of the more functional disorders that are quite frankly systemic in our population.   In this episode, Corey and I went deep into the science — we seriously geeked out on some of the things that you should be looking at in your own lifestyle, how you can start to make shifts on a daily basis, and the top three things that we are both seeing affecting people in a chronic way — and they are definitely not what you'd expect!   If you are interested in understanding how your brain can serve you at its highest potential and how you can preserve your brain activity very long into life, then this episode is designed especially for you!   Key Takeaways: [1:13] About today's episode! [2:39] Welcoming Corey Deacon to the podcast! [3:13] Corey gives a background on who he is and how he's gotten to the place he is today! [8:56] When Corey talks about quantitative analysis and is measuring brain waves, what is it that he is actually looking at? What are they measuring at Neurvana Health and why are they important? [13:13] Has Corey seen shifts in the patients and individuals with emotional and psychological brain diagnoses with the testing that he is doing at Neurvana Health? [18:54] Corey speaks about the influence of CBD on the brain. [22:38] Corey highlights some of the habits that have a deleterious effect on the brain. [31:01] The top three habits Corey observes that are affecting people in a chronic way. [32:15] Corey speaks about their population of patients dealing with chronic inflammatory response syndrome. [33:16] The habits Corey is seeing people engaging in that are having really strong positive effects on brain health. [39:03] Once people have the foundational pieces in place, what are some advanced maneuvers people can engage in to further improve brain health? [41:17] Corey's key-performance indicators! Recently, I had the experience to talk at the Mindshare Summit in San Diego about my vision for the future of health. This event is full of massively famous thought leaders and people that I really look up to in my own work. When I first found out I was going to speak in front of all of these people, I was excited. But that quickly turned into anxiety.   So, today, I want to talk to you all about this experience while it is still fresh! Because a lot of us, in the growth of our business and in our movement through life, face these opportunities where we tend to procrastinate and push them off because we feel like we are not ready. And in this moment, where I got up on the stage to speak, not only did I feel not ready, but I felt that the other people presenting were so much further ahead than I was.   But, what if, rather than saying, ‘I don't like that feeling of anxiety,' or ‘I need to escape that feeling,' you worked on harnessing it? Because we all face these fears and anxieties — and in actuality, they're important to our growth as human beings!   Key Takeaways: [:16] About today's episode. [3:25] What I've learned in this mix of anxiety and procrastination. [3:56] Why I'm sharing this moment with you all today. [5:58] What I will be talking about at the Mindshare Summit. So what I want you to work on this week is aligning these anxieties with your purpose. And if you don't have a purpose yet but are still having these anxieties, I definitely encourage you to unpack these pieces, go deep, and look at what your unique capacity is for contribution in this world. About: It is no secret that cesarean births in our country are much higher than the Healthy People 2020 and World Health Organization goals. In 2014, the U.S. national average for cesarean birth was 32.2%. There are many possible factors that contribute to these high numbers, such as higher maternal ages, an increase in obesity, and an increase in medical intervention on birth. But what can WE as patients or birth workers do to safely prevent cesareans? In this episode, we will dive into the things that you or your birth team can do while in labor to increase the chance of a vaginal delivery! Some of these things are well known, and some may surprise you!   Check out this week's show notes page for a full list of references and resources!   Want a shout out in the next episode? It allows companies to switch from selling products to selling a service that consumers can use while transforming an industry for the better. The subscription model is a win-win for customers and businesses. For businesses: It scales better, is easier to run, and guarantees recurring revenue. For the customer, it’s less expensive and more convenient. To jump into the subscription economy, start with a view of what your customers are doing with you and track all of the usage and interactions. This allows you to understand how you can broaden your footprint with the customer and create a more meaningful relationship.Anybody can take your product, reverse engineer it, and offer a clone to their customers. If your competitive advantage isn’t based on your product but instead your knowledge of what your customers are doing and the relationships you have with them, that is a much stronger position to be in.About: Tien Tzuo is the CEO and founder of Zuora. Today we’re hearing from Gary Taubes who I got a chance to interview for Food Lies a couple months ago when he was in LA. Gary is an investigative science and health journalist who for the past 20 years has been questioning the bad science that’s been done along with the mainstream nutritional wisdom. He’s written some groundbreaking articles in the New York Times and has written multiple best selling books. He’s won various awards for his journalism and is a real authority on nutrition science  so it was a treat to hear his musings on all of this. He generously lent me 2 hours of his time so we covered a lot - there’s a ton of links in the show notes. We get into some interesting details at the end so stick around. This actually will be the last episode of the season. I already have an almost fully booked next season of episodes and have begun interviewing. There will be a a little break because these episodes are a lot of work even if it doesn’t seem like it. I’ll also be busy for a couple weeks on a film tour across the US next week followed by some other filming and editing. The big news is we are starting a new crowdfunding campaign as of today, this time on Indiegogo. Too many people missed out on pre-ordering the film and have been reaching out to me. You also can’t make a documentary on the $30k we did on Indiegogo. So please support us by searching for Food Lies on Kickstarter.com or clicking through from the show notes. Now here’s Gary. John Wilson returns with another edition of Mastertapes the programme in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé takes us back to her debut album "Our Version of Events", the UK’s biggest selling record of 2012 which spent more consecutive weeks in the British charts than any other debut album, breaking a record held for 50 years by The Beatles. Featuring the singles Next To Me, Heaven, Clown and Read all About It, the album made her a household name and she was the only artist to perform at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. Our Version of Events went on to win the BRIT Award for Album of the Year and Emeli was named Best British Female Artist. Emeli Sandé responds to questions from the audience and performs acoustic live versions of some of the tracks from the album. Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme can be heard on the Mastertapes pages on the Radio 4 website. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has become the universal yardstick of progress. GDP judges the value of goods and services produced inside a country’s borders. But the number has a big problem: it only judges output. More car production for example, would seem on the surface as a success, but at what cost? Dirk Philipsen's book is The Little Big Number, How GDP Came to Rule the World and What to do About It.

Cheating Competitors - 3 Things To Think, And Do, About It!                A lot of discussions lately about integrity, ethics and character in sales! Today we are going to talk about what to do when your competitors are cheating or acting unethically! As we look at this challenge it is important to make a distinction between … Doing things that are illegal Doing things that are unethical First – let’s be clear about what is going on Is what they are doing illegal? Would you consider it unethical? Would you consider it immoral? Does it lack integrity? Three words of caution ...  Caution #1 – about using our standards for what is ethical, moral and/or lacks integrity! Caution #2 – let’s make sure everything we are doing passes the same set of standards! Caution #3 – let’s make sure this isn’t just an excuse for someone who is doing a better job than we are! Second – let’s determine how we are going to do business regardless of what others do! There is no such thing as situational ethics! Are we doing anything that someone else could consider shady? Are we willing to sacrifice a dollar to stay within integrity? Third – trust that the world takes care of stuff like this! Sooner or later they get caught They have trouble sleeping at night Their world is usually a mess – personally and professionally And … there are always a ton of customers out there looking for real sales pros! Listener Question of the Week – our company recently changed our compensation plan because they determined we were getting paid too much. I am livid about it and don’t really want to give it my all right now. I am guessing you have some thoughts about this?

Do We Need a "New Reformation," and What Will It Reform?

October 31 provides more to celebrate than just Halloween. It also marks the anniversary of the day in 1517 when an obscure German priest and professor of theology named Martin Luther wrote a list of critical points about the doctrine of the Church and nailed it to the door (bulletin board) at the Castle Church of Wittenberg University. Luther's Ninety-Five Theses were written in Latin and meant for scholarly discussion, but friends soon translated his arguments into German and other modern languages, and with the aid of the newly invented printing press, the work quickly circulated throughout Europe. Almost overnight, the monkish scholar had become unwilling leader of a massive uprising to reform the Church. The Protestant Reformation shook the Christian world, and it is probably fair to say that other reform movements, like Unity, would not be here without that innocent act of scholarly inquiry by Doctor Luther. In our time, retired Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong has called for a “New Reformation” in Christian thought. Is he right? What needs to be reformed, and what will a new Christianity updated for the 21st century look like? Join Rev. Dr. Thomas Shepherd and his panel as they wrestle with questions about a New Reformation on Let's talk About It.

The Middle Level Essentials Conference will be held at the Red Rocks in Nevada April 23-34. Tell your high school colleagues about the special "conference in a conference" on ninth grade teams. 5. Crime does not pay! Worried teaching tech skills might open doors to nefarious activities? This creative internetter used Craigslist to create a caper outside a bank in Washington. A suspect is in custody. Bonus points for creativity, not so much for community service content. Considering the recent economy let me also add this: Don't do this at home. 6. We've compared education and technology to the RIAA and piracy laws. Here's another take on that conversation for your perusal. 7. The MacArthur Foundation is spending $50 million dollars on a 5 year study seeking to understand digital life and youth. Three years of the study are reported out in Living and Learning with New Media: Summary of the Findings from the Digital Youth Project. Read about the study here in the New York Times article. We might pull this for discussion in a future podcast. 8. What if we thought of internet access like water, gas, electricity and other utilities? Will Richardson has found an interesting quote from a future Obama official concerning the regulation of the internet and increasing availability in communities across the country. As proposed, the deregulation would increase competition and lower price making it more available to households. 9. Quote for the week: "In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists." - Eric Hoffer http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/top-news/index.cfm? i=56127 Wagner said the problem is that you can have all the equipment and technology you want, but "if you don't teach kids how to think, how to think beyond multiple choice, you've got a problem." "I realize education is a very risk-averse sector," said Wagner, "but assessments either drive instruction for the better or for the worse, and right now in the U.S., it's for the worse. If our assessments measured performance and 21st-century skills, like the European PISA assessment, that would be another story." "They're multi-taskers, they are drawn to graphics, they like instant gratification, they use Web 2.0 tools to create, and they love collaboration," he said. "If we can figure out how to grab their interest in learning, they'll become great thinkers and be eager to learn the basics." Wagner presented a list of seven "survival skills" that students need to succeed in today's information-age world, taken from his book The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need--And What We Can do About It. It's a school's job to make sure students have these skills before graduating, he said: 1. Problem-solving and critical thinking; 2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence; 3. Agility and adaptability; 5. Effective written and oral communication; "We are making [Adequate Yearly Progress] at the expense of failing our kids at life. Something has to change," he concluded.
