PR's H1 Review 2025 with W Communications founder Warren Johnson On the PRmoment podcast.Every six months or so I like to catch up with Warren Johnson from W Communications to talk about the financial state of UK PR.And as Q1 is done and dusted, Trump is having endless fun throwing tariffs at the global economy, and we've just finished the agenda setting PRmoment Awards season: now seems like a good time. And before we start, do check out the homepage of PRmoment. Anyone who has studied economics knows that is not going to work.”“The randomness of them is going to sow quite a bit of economic uncertainty.”“I fear that just as we were starting to see quite an encouraging financial year ahead of us, I think many of us had a strong Q1, I fear that we're going to slip back into the great inertia post Covid.”4 mins Warren, PR's resident economist (he did an economics degree) gives us his insight into why tariffs are unlikely to work from an economics perspective.6 mins What are brand communicators likely to do about Trump? “Whilst there are opportunities there will be unexpected threats as well. I'm not sure where comms will net out.”“I don't think we've (PR) had more than 6-8 months to have a really good run at things since 2020."8 mins Warren reviews a very good Q1 performance for UK PR.13 mins Is the PR new business market still busy?14 mins Warren on the margin pressure currently experienced by agencies?“Constant procurement overreach, to the point of bullying.”Paid media briefs: how is paid media supporting editorial ideas?15.30 mins What PR services are clients buying?“Loads of influencer and a bespoke blend of integrated marketing services. I haven't seen a press office brief for 3 or 4 years.”19 mins Warren on the evolution of paid behind earned media creative across multiple channels, including media owners.

The Ethics of AI in PR with Cayce Myers PR Series In this episode of the PR series, I interview Cayce Myers, a lawyer and professor of Public Relations and director of graduate studies at the School of Communications at Virginia Tech. His focus is on media history, political communication and laws that affect public relations practice. Today's episode focuses on AI's place in PR, the ethics of AI, regulations surrounding it, what practitioners should and shouldn't do, as well as considerations to make before adding it. With Myers' background in PR history, politics, and the law, we also discuss what we can learn from PR history, shifts occurring in social media due to AI, and more. Some top tips … AI is a disruptive technology as was social media and the internet. It will change the field of communications, but he doesn't think it will replace it. Learning from the past, technological innovations have been absorbed into public relations and now we think of it as indispensable. Generative AI, like Chat GPT, can be used to enhance work quality, cut costs, and improve workflow but requires oversight by a human who reviews, edits, and fact checks the work product. There is a lot of discussion right now in the PR field about how to become a sophisticated user of generative AI and train others to become sophisticated and responsible users of AI. Additionally, generative AI users in PR need to remember that in order to stand out in the marketplace, you can't just spit out what generative AI gives you because you won't be a thought leader until you use what you're given and say something unique about it. To build any career, you need to offer a unique perspective, not the status quo that would be generated by AI like Chat GPT. Government regulation of AI is an ongoing discussion and should be followed. The current regulatory issues are privacy, discrimination, and intellectual property. For public relations purposes, copyrights of intellectual property won't be enforced if the content is produced more by AI than by a human. There is a need to be transparent with clients about what's creating content, or you need to figure out what to say. Lastly, you need to have due diligence. User's should never take what's generated as absolute truth. Don't wait for regulations. It's going to be harder and harder, but fact check. This episode at glance … >> [3:52 to 7:41] How companies today can learn from PR's past >> [17:07 to 21:04] What PR pros should be aware of regarding government regulation of AI that would impact PR and the way companies communicate with their audiences >> [21:05 to 26:09] Questions to consider before adding it into your PR processes >> [26:10 to 31:02] How to watch for bias in the research and content created by AI >> [31:30 to 34:05] How to stay on top of AI trends impacting the way you work >> [34:06 to 39:19] How social media is changing the way multiple generations consume news and how journalists find stories and report the news Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? “What PR clients are really seeking is credibility. They are seeking authority. They are seeking third-party validation. Ultimately, they are seeking one thing above all else: Trust. In a world where PR and content marketing is essential to SEO, the sports industry can bring about some learnings for anyone in the digital marketing field.  Karina Barriga Albring of FIFA joined me on the SEJ Show to discuss the world of Sports Development and Sports Marketing. She shares her journey from traditional journalism to PR and marketing.  Take a look at how sports can provide some valuable marketing insights and how marketing can benefit from sports too.   We know how passionate people are about a sport, whether football, soccer, or basketball. People sometimes have an irrational attachment to this activity, myself included...The emotional connection is so strong that, of course, brands will want to be involved. Sports marketing is tagging along to the immense love, attachment, and relationship we have for sports. –Karina Barriga Albring, 11:44 We're going to start seeing brands' funding to align with athletes whose message and online persona align with the values that the brand wants to spread. –Karina Barriga Albring, 24:31 Brands like to have ambassadors who are relatable and who are real people. So if you are an athlete who enjoys theater, go to the theater and get involved in local community activities. Try to identify the other passions that you have. All of that helps you build your persona. Make people find you more relatable and likable, which will translate into brands wanting to work with you. –Karina Barriga Albring, 30:30   [00:00] - About Karina. [03:40] - How working with other industries helped her in sports. [06:57] - What PR is all about. [10:54] - What is Sports Marketing? [16:12] - To what extent is licensing a part of Sports Marketing? [19:14] - The importance of personal branding in Sports Marketing. [27:26] - Opportunities for athletes to build their brand. [33:28] - Sports Marketing tips that can be applied to marketing.   Resources mentioned: FIFA - https://www.fifa.com/   In the time that we're living in, we're no longer competing for an audience. We're not only competing with our direct competitors but for the attention of the audience. You're competing for people's times...These days that is something that we need to think about when we analyze our strategies and our positioning. –Karina Barriga Albring, 48:29 In website development or SEO, it's always nice to check what your main competitor is doing and your smaller competition. And it's always great to have a "side project" to experiment with...the ability to have some side project and then turn it into a business case and then pitch the ability to do it on your company's website may also be helpful. –Loren Baker, 47:23 With influencers and content creators online, when we think about PR, we don't only think about traditional media. We think about anyone with a platform to make your message widespread.–Karina Barriga Albring, 8:27   For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? Today on the podcast I am chatting with Meg Harris who is the Founder and Director of Meg Harris Public Relations and this is a really special episode for me because a lot of the guests you hear from on TRHP come from Meg and her incredible team so it was really exciting to sit down and pick Meg's brain on all things PR.   Truthfully, I started this episode not knowing a lot about PR and how it works.  I was intrigued to learn more about the space and how PR can be used for small businesses.  I spent some time asking Meg questions about how we can implement a PR strategy into our own business, and I picked her brain for expert advice when it comes to the benefits, the results we can see and also when to seek help.   What I wasn't anticipating when it came to this episode is Meg's approach to business.  Working in fast paced agencies in Sydney and London gave Meg her experience but she was destined for more!  Guided by her innate compassion and desire to build her own value-led business, MHPR was founded in 2018. Meg has been one of the first in the industry to shift her focus to ‘Conscious PR' – supporting ethical and sustainable brands across the wellness, beauty, fashion and lifestyle space with impactful publicity and experiential moments that help shift the dial towards more conscious consumption.   I was really interested in not only drove Meg to pave a new way in the industry, but a new way as a business owner.  Mindfulness is one of the leader drivers for Meg's approach to business.  Scaling with intent and representing businesses who's value aligns with hers was something that was really inspirational to me.  In a world where everything moves at 100 miles an hour, it's amazing to chat to a business owner who is growing with grace.  Meg encompasses everything I aspire to be in a business owner.   This episode is perfect for anyone interested in the PR space and how it can work for them.  It's also great for business owners who are wanting to separate themselves from hustle culture and step into a conscious leadership role and grow with pure intent.   In today's episode we discuss: Meg's career journey from fast paced agencies, to yoga teacher, to business owner. What PR is, who it can benefit and how to get the results you want. After almost a decade working for traditional PR agencies, Evie was pretty sure she hated PR and was done making rich white CIS men, richer. After some soul searching she decided to give this whole PR thing one more shot, but on her terms. Rebellious was founded with the principles that the client-agency relationship would be a true partnership, the work would be thoughtful, the standards would be high and the overall approach to PR would be BS-free. Rachel Johnston - Rachel loves to tell remarkable stories. Her work experience has spanned a number of industries, with the common thread of storytelling through marketing, communication, production, and efficient operations. She owes her industry flexibility to a love of people, ideas, experiences, and a willingness to change lanes and learn often.  Early in her career, she was deep in the first big waves of social media lifestyle integration, producing social media content and user experiences at live events — well before content was king, when it was barely courting the social channels of the internet. From there, she went on to manage event partnerships for live events broadcasts on ESPN2, ESPN3and Twitch, and has transformed the companies she’s worked at as a Director of Marketing & Communications with direct measurable growth.  Evie and Rachel join me today to share the necessity for PR firms like Rebellious and the “accidental” beginning of the company. They share the relationship between messaging and communicating to the public. The creative industry is a linchpin to the economy, yet B2B companies don’t agree with it. The PR industry is based around perception – eg: AppleApple’s PR is making people have a good feeling about Apple and the quality that they createApple's marketing is about showing the benefits of their products and how they can change your life. How has social media impacted the way that good PRs communicate? What’s a better PR strategy for 2015? Are the wrong people interacting on social media? Is there one social network worth focusing on? Are traditional media releases still relevant? Why you reach more people by focusing on the top 5 influencers How do you encourage brand mentions? Why you need to look for an emotional response on social media How do you deal with negative brand mentions? Is it a good idea to publicly interact with users who aren't happy with your brand? Why the rise and rise of social media has been disruptive Can PR professionals still control the company message? What communication styles are particularly effective at the moment? Young PR Pros: Episode #56 - Answers to the negative PR stereotypes

Young PR Pros

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 20, 2013 21:36

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent answer a big question: how can young PR professionals get rid of any negative PR stereotypes. A question, Kristine asked while she attended Conversations 2013, the CPRS National Conference in Gatineau. As you go through the lessons below click on the bold links. they will direct you to the full interview on YouTube.  Here is what she learned: Evan Solomon, a reporter by trade, reminded us that the PR industry lacks authenticity. Lack of authenticity results in mistrust. He says we need to get that trust back by being spontaneous and breaking free from canned messages. On that note, Kristine reminds our readers it is all about building relationships and makes reference to an article called Media Relations 2.0. The standard news release is dying, build a relationship with journalists instead. Dan Tisch says we too often define ourselves as the things we do - i.e. media relations, social media - when we should be looking at the value of what we do. Dan also encourages young pros to make business literacy your number one goal in your education and training. Understanding the business of your organization will help you understand the value PR brings to an organization. Terry Fallis quotes the first line in his new book, Up and Down, "Welcome to the dark side," says the agency manager to the new recruit. Terry says the image that PR is the dark side still exists and encourages young pros to not just do PR for their companies, but for the PR industry as well. Ira Basen, a producer with CBC, says we have to find out what the negative sterotype is and thens imply stop doing it. but in general, he says we should be truthful and honest. Ira also reminds young pros that this is a big burden to carry on one person's shoulders. We shouldn't be responsible for the industry's reputation, just our own. If everyone worries about their own reputation and makes an effort to do good PR, then the industry will grow. Alexandra Samuel makes reference to a familiar idea: breaking down the silos. She says young pros enter the work force in a silo - the social media expert. But social media is more than just a job these days, it is our entire industry. She encourages young professionals who get stuck in the social media role to remind your superiors you are more than just a tweeter. You are building relationships. To finish off the conference, CPRS held a panel called the Future of PR. The panel included Dan Tisch, Jean Valin, Stephanie Lawrence and Vince Power and was moderated by Bruce MacLellan. Here are a few comments the panel made about improving the industry's stereotypes: Redefine what we do from a service to value. We look after the company's reputation, that is valuable. Reflect the values of an organization through our communications. PR can be the gateway to showcasing the value of trusting an orgyanization. Call out bad practice. Don't let people get away with bad PR, because it is not PR, it is just lies. Remind the world that PR does more than just communications for an organization, but often we are the ones behind the corporate social responsibility initiatives, helpiong local and global communities. Be part of a professional organization where we can work together towards international standards. Everyone in a professional organization such as CPRS or IABC should hold each other accountable. Finally, don't let this blog post just sit here. Start a conversation with your boss, your peers, your colleagues, your friends and see how you can change PR and eliminate any negative stereotypes. You can get full access to all the content from Conversations 2013 through our Facebook tab, on our Pinterest board or on the #CPRS2013 YouTube playlist. We want to hear from you. What PR would you do for the PR industry? What do you do on a daily basis to eliminate any negative PR stereotypes? Post your comment below or on our Facebook Page, or on our Google+ page, or in our LinkedIn group, or on Pinterest, or send us an email at youngprpros@gmail.com, or send us a message on Twitter @youngprpros, @kristinesimpson or @kentjulia.
