There are a lot of great titles to kick off the year with Two-Face giving a wonderful procedural feel and startign to show just how important Harvey Dent is to the White Church, the court of crime attempting to keep the peace in the Gotham underworld. The penultimate issue of this era of Batman brings back a fan favorite villain, but just how is is back and why, remains to be seen. I've noticed a difference between the way black and white churches operate when it comes to allowing political candidates to share their message in the church during political season. In this episode of the podcast, Pastor Alex evaluates why that seems to be the case. It seems that black churches are a little more bold in inviting candidates to speak in front of the congregation. Why is that? We will talk about it during this episode of the podcast. Alex Bryant Ministries is focused on helping people be reconciled to God, then within one's own self, and finally being reconciled to our fellow man in order to become disciples. David Swanson is pastor of New Community Covenant Church in Chicago and the author Rediscipling the White Church. In this episode, David Swanson helps us think, first, about the challenges of leading our people toward racial healing and equity, and, second, about the kinds of leadership and practices that can help us form our people to be people of healing and equity.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:David Swanson is pastor of New Community Covenant Church in Chicago and the author Rediscipling the White Church.Churches made up of different races and ethnicities often read the Bible differently, and often in ways that don't lead us toward one another.According to David Swanson, there are ways in which our churches have conformed to the patterns of our racialized society.David Swanson realized the church needed a different kind of discipleship, the kind that would bring people of different races together.David intentionally planted his church to be an integrated, multi-racial church.A disciple is someone who follows Jesus in order to become like Jesus to do what Jesus does.David Swanson describes the role of community in overcoming racial injustice. We are called to engage in spiritual practices communally (such as Holy Communion) in ways that bring healing and reconciliation. We can disciple our children by having challenging conversations about race and racism. Churches can provide resources for these conversations.Over time, children's neutral observations about the color of a person's skin begin to take on a moral weight.David Swanson encourages white pastors to pray for authentic cross-racial friendships.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Books mentioned:Rediscipling the White Church, by David SwansonDavid SwansonWebsite – www.dwswanson.comChurch Leadership InstituteLearn how to lead your church into ministry that matters. Guest Bios Show Transcript What is it like to be a person of color in a predominantly white evangelical church? Does fitting in require someone to change their behavior, appearance, and speech? REPRISE - Ken welcomes Rev. David Swanson, author of the powerfully provocative book, Redisciplining the White Church from Cheap Diversity to True Solidarity. Once again on the podcast, two white guys talk about race - specifically race in the American white evangelical church. David started a church in the historic Bronzeville district in the South Side of Chicago. David tells the story of his own awakenings. The white church is predisposed to resist conversation about racial history, white dominance, and the harmful impact of the conservative propaganda machine. The two share their journeys of self-discovery - awakening to the problems of whiteness. Swanson quotes many, like Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, and Bryan Stevenson. Ida B. Wells (who battled lynching in the late 1800s) challenged Dwight L. Moody. The Emmett Till Law of 2020 was just signed the week of this recording, making lynching a federal hate crime. Structural, systemic, and institutional racism is a reality that must be taken into account. David is a great proponent of the Civil Rights Tour. David Swanson joins Pastor Moore and Pastor Jeff for a conversation on his book, Rediscipling the White Church. He proposes that we rethink our liturgies and imagine new discipleship practices that can reform us as disciples who live in solidarity with Christ's diverse church. Many churches are concerned with their lack of diversity - not diversity of thought, but of skin color. The question is, is a "white church" necessarily something worth concern? Likewise, should black churches be seeking out more white members?
After writing Rediscipling the White Church, Pastor David W. Swanson has gone on to be an important voice in Christian racial solidarity movements. On this episode, we sit down to talk to him about his vision for rediscipleship, why he prefers brother/sister language over “ally,” and what it means to have fellowship with rediscipled white congregations.Support the Mestizo Podcast by giving today.Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Holy Spirit, Holy Mess, and How A Black Pastor Celebrates Juneteenth In A Historically White Church by 2Pastors - Kate and Eulando
If you've ever wondered about the term and concept of whiteness, if you've ever wondered how there can be such differences between white Christians and Black Christians, if you've ever wondered about how reconciliation and justice play a role in spiritual maturity, this conversation is for you. Pastor David Swanson joins Latasha Morrison to talk through the biblical exegesis and cultural exegesis of racial righteousness and discipleship. Their deep discussion is covered in the beauty and necessity of truth, of hospitality, of perseverance. This episode will leave you with a better understanding of how we got to where we are in the American church context and with hope for the days to come. Host & Executive Producer - Latasha Morrison Senior Producer - Lauren C. Brown Producer, Editor, & Music - Travon Potts Transcriber - Sarah Connatser Quotes: “What would it look like for a majority white ministry or church to take seriously the call to discipling Christians, so that they stand more and more in solidarity with the whole body of Christ, so that our witness to Jesus could be that much more powerful?” -David Swanson “This is profoundly spiritual work that we do. As much as we need other resources and tools, at the end of the day this is a work that only the Spirit of God can accomplish.” -David Swanson “If we're going to do this well in a healthy manner, we're going to have to directly and regularly confront whiteness. We will have to name it, we'll have to talk about what it looks like, we'll have to talk about how it manifests in very specific ways. But we'll have to do that in a way that doesn't just quote, unquote, educate white people, but actually is good news to the people of color in the room as well.” -David Swanson “When we see each other as God sees us, we wouldn't see our differences as something that sets us against one another, but something that brings us together and causes beauty that points back to God.” -Latasha Morrison Links:Ad for Charity Water: CharityWater.org/BridgePastor David Swanson: dwswanson.com/ twitter.com/davidswanson facebook.com/PastorDavidWSwanson/ instagram.com/david.w.swanson/ David Swanson's Rediscipling the White Church: ivpress.com/rediscipling-the-white-churchNew Community Covenant Church: newcommunitycovenant.com/ Be the Bridge: BeTheBridge.com facebook.com/beabridgebuilder/ instagram.com/bethebridge/ twitter.com/BAbridgebuilder Latasha Morrison: latashamorrison.com/ facebook.com/LatashaMMorrison instagram.com/latashamorrison/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Throughout history church has taken on a myriad of different looks. In the 50s church was about rules and ties and flat tops. In the 70's it was Maranatha music, long hair and flip-flops. In the 90s it was khakis and reaching the seeker. The church has had thousands of different style changes in it's 2000 year history but there are some things that God has called us to regardless of the century. God‘s plan is not based on haircuts or style changes. It is based on the grace and love of Jesus that has the power to transform. If you liked this podcast, please like, subscribe and/or SHARE. “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.” (Romans 6:9–12 ESV) Happy Easter from the Substance! The tomb is empty, Jesus has defeated death and his kingdom is coming. In this dawning reality, the false anthropology of White Supremacy must be understood and turned from to align with the Biblical view of humanity.
