#049 – Our Pope Watch Has Ended

Last week, the Catholic Church absolutely shook the world by electing Robert Prevost - an Augustinian from Chicago - Pope Leo XIV, making him the first ever American pope. Immediately, MAGA lost their collective minds, calling Leo XIV a woke Marxist and an anti-Trump liberal. Leo XIV's election was, without question, a statement by the Church directed squarely at MAGA and Donald Trump, but so many questions remain about what happens next. Kelly and John share their thoughts about the selection of Prevost, what it means that he chose the name Leo XIV, and why this way well serve as a check against Trump's fascism and persecution of immigrant communities. They also take a look at some of the findings from the Public Religion Research Institute's findings from their survey of Americans following Trump's first 100 days. John's thoughts on Leo XIV or available on our blog. The PRRI surveys we discuss on the episode can be found here and here

Donald Trump has been re-sworn in as President of the United States. And for this re-ascendency, he owes a thank you to Latino voters, especially Latino evangelicals. They turned out for him in double digits in the last election. So what is it about Latinos, evangelicalism, and Trump's brand of Republicanism that helped tip the White House back in his favor?President and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, Robert P. As the 2024 American presidential election approaches, it is common to hear scholars and journalists discuss the role of particular groups such as Latino men or suburban white women might play in a razor tight race. Less attention is paid to the nation's youngest voters: Gen Z. Born between 1997 and 2012, these voters have experienced a decade of upheaval including, the murder of George Floyd, changing political norms with the election of Donald Trump, an insurrection after the election of Joe Biden, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Gen Z voters have lived under the constant threats of mass shootings and climate change. In response, these voters are mobilizing -- and left-leaning Zoomers, particularly women and LGBTQ people, have the potential to move U.S. politics to the left. Dr. Melissa Deckman uses original data – including nearly one hundred interviews with Gen Z activists and several national surveys – to highlight the increasing role of Zoomers. She argues that women and LGBTQ Zoomers are participating in politics at higher levels than their straight male peers, creating a historic "reverse gender gap." Dr. Deckman explores Gen Z's activism using mixed methods data and compelling personal narratives of how Gen Z activists have mobilized to defend reproductive rights, prevent gun violence, stem climate change, and win political office. A deep dive into the politics of Gen Z, The Politics of Gen Z: How the Youngest Voters Will Shape Our Democracy (Columbia UP, 2024) sheds new light on how young voters view politics and why their commitment to progressive values may transform the country in the years ahead. Dr. Melissa Deckman is the CEO of PRRI, the Public Religion Research Institute. She is a political scientist who studies the impact of gender, religion, and age on public opinion and political behavior. She was previously the Louis L. Goldstein Professor of Public Affairs at Washington College. Her previous books include the Tea Party Women: Mama Grizzlies, Grassroots Leaders, and the Changing Face of the American Right (2016) which examines the role of women in conservative politics. “But religious diversity on its own is not religious pluralism; that requires a bit more: Individuals have the legal rights and de facto freedoms to worship, believe, practice, and join in community with others according to their conscience. Individuals are also able to abstain from these activities. In the U.S., these rights and freedoms are guaranteed by the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment; Individuals and communities protect their own and others' rights and freedoms to worship, believe, practice, and join in community with others, or not, according to their conscience; Individuals and communities protect each others' safety to worship; and Communities engage with each other, acknowledging areas of deep and irreconcilable difference, but focused on areas of common ground. And finally, since religious pluralism does not happen without sustained and diverse religious communities: Diverse religious communities themselves thrive, meaning leadership is good, community institutions are sustainable, community ties remain strong, and congregants know the basic theological content of their own traditions. What is religious pluralism NOT? Religious pluralism is not: The simple fact of religious diversity in a society A synchronistic mix of religious beliefs that pares down theological ideas to the lowest common denominator Religious belief being prioritized over non-belief.” -Aspen Institute. “Who Are Secular Voters? Religiously unaffiliated (“nonreligious”) Americans are the largest and fastest growing religious demographic in the country. While the nonreligious are a diverse group who span the political spectrum, these Americans are united on key political issues. According to the 2015 Pew Religious Landscape Survey, the nonreligious overwhelmingly support legal access to abortion (73%) and same-sex marriage (78%) compared to evangelicals who oppose those same policies by smaller margins (63% and 64%, respectively). Similarly, a 2016 Public Religion Research Institute poll found that 71% of the nonreligious oppose religiously-based service refusals compared to only 56% of evangelicals who support that same policy. Despite recent trends, secular voters continue to be severely underrepresented in government. According to an analysis by the Pew Research Center, while the nonreligious comprise nearly one-quarter of all Americans, they comprise only just 0.2% of the 115th Congress. That means there are 100 times as many religiously unaffiliated Americans as there are religiously unaffiliated Members of Congress. We are determined to change that by mobilizing a voting bloc united by shared secular values and investing in strategic programs that empower secular values voters to be active, influential players in the electoral process.” -Secular Coalition of America. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

He explains: “House Speaker Mike Johnson stared down anti-Israel protesters at Columbia University last month and affirmed the nation's support for Jewish students. His remarks were sharp and unequivocal, a welcome contrast with university officials' hand-wringing and the Biden administration's feeble response to the antisemitism sweeping across the states. Yet rather than give him credit, Democrats and the press for months have fixated on Mr. Johnson's background as a ‘Christian nationalist.' The New Republic claimed he'd been ‘groomed by the Christian right' in ‘secretive circles' to ‘rule the United States according to ‘biblical values.'' Robert Jones, president of the Public Religion Research Institute, described Mr. Johnson as ‘the embodiment of white Christian nationalism in a tailored suit.'” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-smear-campaign-against-christian-nationalists-faith-freedom-f3954994?mod=opinion_lead_pos5 5:30pm- The Toobin Missile Crisis! Did she just end her political career? It certainly seems like it. 6:30pm- Shia Kapos of Politico investigated the source of funding for anti-Israel protests on college campuses. The three friends join together to interact over their weekend and a conversation is triggered by an unlikely Atlantic article (April 3, 2024, Issue) they all read - The True Cost of The Church Going Bust by self-described agnostic, Derek Thompson. In it, Thompson writes, “More than one-quarter of Americans now identify as atheists, agnostics, or religiously ‘unaffiliated,' according to a new survey of 5,600 U.S. adults by the Public Religion Research Institute. This is the highest level of non-religiosity in the poll's history.” The two Kens and Betsey discuss their church experience, especially the Sunday they spent together at the First Baptist Church of Pasadena (Ken Fong's home church). Thompson argues, as a non-believer, that something profound is lost should communities of faith disappear in America. With his several divorces, violent rhetoric, and long list of criminal charges, former President Donald Trump may not be your idea of a God-fearing Christian. But that hasn't stopped him from appealing to his Christian base.Roughly 8 out of 10 white Evangelicals supported Trump in the 2016 general presidential election. And a recent Pew Research survey found that among religious groups, white Evangelical Protestants had a more positive opinion of Trump than any other group, whereas the majority of Jewish Americans, Black protestants, and atheists all had an unfavorable opinion of Trump.Despite their outsized political power, the white Evangelical church is shrinking. According to the Public Religion Research Institute, about 14 percent of the population identifies as white and evangelical. That's compared 25 percent in the 1990s.Today, we focus on white Evangelical Christians and the effect they will have on the 2024 election.Want to support 1A? Americans are becoming less religious and two new surveys out just last week punctuate just how quickly that's happening. According to the Public Religion Research Institute, 26 percent of Americans now consider themselves unaffiliated with any religion. That's up from 21 percent a decade ago and just 6 percent in the early '90s. According to Gallup, the number of Americans who attend religious services weekly or nearly every week has fallen from 42 percent in 2000 to 30 percent now. In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, Galen speaks with a roundtable of experts on religion and society about why the decline has happened and what it portends for American communities, networks and politics. Donald Trump has enjoyed strong support from white Evangelical Christians since his first run for the presidency. But recently, he has made a specific brand of Christianity a centerpiece of his campaign. He repeatedly casts himself as a messiah figure, even comparing his legal troubles to the persecution of Christ. He regularly ends his rallies with prayer. And last week he started hocking a version of the Bible that also includes copies of the founding documents of the United States. “Trump is now wrapping his candidacy around this idea of White Christian Nationalism,” says Robert P. Jones, president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, or PRRI. He is also author of two books about the relationship between race and religion in the United States, “The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy,” as well as “White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity.” Jones joins Diane on this week's episode of On My Mind to talk about what's behind the attempts to build The Church of Trump, and why he sees it as a dangerous development for the country. About the series: This is a critical year for the future of democracy. Half the world's population will go to the polls in 2024, at a time when citizens in America and across the globe are losing faith in democratic institutions. We often view the rollback of democracy and threats to the liberal international order as separate problems, but in reality they are closely interlinked. Through a new limited podcast series, MEI's Gonul Tol seeks to examine the interplay between democracy's domestic and international foes as well as how to counter them.   In this episode: The world's oldest democracy is in trouble. According to a study by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution, 75% of Americans believe that “the future of American democracy is at risk in the 2024 presidential election.” We often debate why democracies die because we assume that authoritarian power is the exception and democracy is the norm. But history says otherwise.  Francis Fukuyama and Paul Salem join Gonul Tol to answer the question: Why has democracy flourished in certain countries and regions and not in others?

It's Wednesday, January 31st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistani Christian students no longer required to study Islam Last week, Pakistan's government announced it will no longer require Christian students to study Islam in schools. Non-Muslim students will even be allowed to study the religion of their family.  International Christina Concern noted, “This decision is a small win for religious freedom in Pakistan, where Christians are routinely subjected to blasphemy laws, mob violence, and forced marriage and conversion.” Under the new rules, Christian students in schools will be able to study the Bible, church history, the influence of Christianity in Pakistan, and even Christian martyrs in the country. Please pray for this opportunity for Christian education in Pakistan and for many to come to the knowledge of Christ through it. This year's predicted global economic growth -- 3.1% The International Monetary Fund  upgraded its global economic forecast yesterday. It now expects global growth of 3.1% this year and a smaller chance of economic contraction.  The IMF forecasts the U.S. will grow 2.1%. The U.S. economy finished 2023 stronger than expected with gross domestic product increasing 3.3% in the fourth quarter.  Six pro-life rescuers found guilty in Tennessee The Daily Wire reports that six pro-life rescuers were found guilty yesterday during federal court proceedings in Nashville, Tennessee. The Biden administration accused them of civil rights conspiracy as well as violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. The pro-lifers participated in a peaceful protest at an abortion mill in Tennessee on March 5, 2021. The protest included prayers and singing hymns. The men and women on trial include Chet Gallagher of Tennessee, Coleman Boyd of Mississippi, Heather Idoni of Michigan, Cal Zastrow of Michigan, Paul Vaughn of Tennessee, and Dennis Green of Virginia. The conspiracy charge can carry a prison sentence of up to 11 years and fines of up to $350,000. Please pray for these pro-lifers as they face sentencing in July. Psalm 43:1 says, “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!” Pro-life leader Rusty Thomas reacts to guilty verdicts of pro-lifers Rusty Thomas, the founder of Kingdom Leadership Institute in Waco, Texas, posted a Facebook video with his reaction to the unjust guilty verdicts against the six pro-life rescuers. Listen. THOMAS: “This is a sad day. It just shows just how unjust our justice system has become, how far from God we have gone. ‘No greater love have any man to lay down his life for a friend.' (John 15:13) That ‘no greater love' ethic has just been stomped to the ground by our justice system. “Pray that this awakens the church and awakens our nation. This is despicable. This is tragic. We've lost our moral compass. We don't know the difference between right and wrong and good and evil anymore. It's gotten so mucky and murky. This just demonstrates just how far we have gone from the Father's house and how desperate we are for the Lord's intervention.” Texas Governor vs. U.S. Supreme Court over border crisis Last Wednesday, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott  declared the immigration crisis an invasion and invoked the state's “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.” Abbott said the authority, “supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.” On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal government can take down razor wire that Texas puts up at the southern border with Mexico. However, Abbott said he will only increase state border patrol, barriers, and replace the razor wire.  At least 10 states have sent National Guard troops and personnel to support Texas. Gen Z's moral confusion A new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute found nearly a third of Gen Z adults identify with sexually perverted lifestyles.  Seventy-two percent of Gen Z adults, those who are 18 to 25 years old, identified as heterosexual. About a third of Gen Z adults are religiously unaffiliated, and 10% identified as non-Christian, the highest of any generation. Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.'” Gen Z adults' identification with sexually perverted lifestyles is double that of the Millennials at 16% and quadruple that of Gen X at 7%. Elon Musk's company implanted computer chip in brain And finally, Elon Musk announced his startup Neuralink implanted a computer chip in a person's brain for the first time. The tech billionaire wrote on X, “Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.” Musk said the device is designed to allow patients to operate a phone or computer by thinking. First users will be those who lost the use of their limbs.  Neuralink's website noted, “The device is designed to interpret a person's neural activity, so they can operate a computer or smartphone by simply intending to move – no wires or physical movements are required.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, January 31st in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's actually gotten rather hard to read America's pollsters and pundits without coming across rather panicked articles over the rise of Christian nationalism in America. The alarm bells really seemed to be set off by a recent study from the Public Religion Research Institute that asked 5 thousand respondents representing all 50 states, if they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements, such as: The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation; U.S. laws should be based on Christian values; If the U.S. moves away from our Christian foundations, we will not have a country anymore; Being Christian is an important part of being truly American; and finally, God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society. The results were particularly terrifying for secular liberals!     Highlights:  “If 30% of the American public already ascribes so assent or allegiance to the basic tenets of Christian nationalism, then all bets are off! We may already be in the midst of a major paradigm shift that needed a percentage like that to tip the scales, as it were.” “If you can believe it, nearly 20% of Democrats would like to see American declared a Christian nation!... Don't dismiss the significance of 20% of Democrats being attracted to Christian nationalism. That is an extraordinarily significant figure.” “Restoration politics, the new political era we're entering into, is all about implementing re-traditionalized policies in every sphere of life. And this is where we're seeing the rising and dominance of Christian nationalist sentiments.”   Timestamps: [00:49] Americans tipping the scale and agreeing to the basic tenets of Christian nationalism [02:06] How the majority of Republicans support the formal declaration of the United States as a Christian nation  [05:50] Why are we seeing this surge of interest and attraction for Christian nationalism   Resources:  Try Liver Health Formula by going to GetLiverHelp.com/Turley and claim your 5 FREE bonus gifts. Next time on State of Belief: Dr. Robert P. Jones, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute. We'll be talking about his important new book, coming September 5th, The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future. Robby traces those roots back to the birth of our nation, and shows how it was manifest even before the sin of slavery became a cornerstone for the growing nation's prosperity. Going beyond history and analysis, he lays out concrete examples for communities coming together, at last, to move beyond these foundational tensions and dehumanizing impulses.

This is corroborated by studies that have found that Gen Zers are the most conservative generation we have to date in the last hundred years or so!” ●      “The number of people affirming only two genders is increasing, not decreasing, in total opposition to the sentiments that woke Inc and trans activists have been doing everything they possibly can to foster and cultivate!”     Timestamps:     [01:14] On the latest poll that shows that belief in only 2 genders has increased [04:18] How even Democrats who believe we only have two genders have increased [06:05] How support for transgender athlete has declined and how the world is moving away from the woke left Resources:  ●      Nature's Morphine? A survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution found that found more than half of Republicans believe the US should be a strictly Christian nation, adhering to the ideals of Christian nationalism or sympathizing with those views. While this remains a minority opinion nationwide, the study also found correlations between people who hold Christian nationalist views and Anti-Black, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, and patriarchal views.
