Lighting of the Advent Wreath – see insert Opening Prayer Gracious God, With joy and thanksgiving, we gather as your people. We have come to hear the timeless story of Christ’s birth again. Sing, O angels, in the stillness of our hearts, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those God favors.” This we pray in the name of the Child of Bethlehem. Amen. Women of Substance with Dr. Scarlett Horton⁣ Episode 113 – Special Christmas Episode – “Joy to the World” __________⁣ “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given… and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV) This special Christmas episode of Women of Substance is a celebration of the joy, hope, and redemption found in Jesus Christ. The episode opens with beautiful Christmas music featuring vocalist Rhonda Pyhala, alongside jazz musicians Richard Drexler and Noah Charles, creating a reverent and worshipful atmosphere that draws our hearts toward the miracle of Christ’s birth. Following the music, Drs. David & Scarlett Horton share a powerful Christmas message centered on the prophetic promise of Isaiah 9:6 and the fulfilled hope revealed in the birth of Jesus. Together, they reflect on the names of Christ — Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace — and what these truths mean for us today. This teaching reminds us that Christmas is not merely a historical event, but a living gospel message: That God is good and His goodness is available to all, His grace reaches every person, regardless of background, Jesus came for the whole world — to heal, restore, redeem, and save... and with God, nothing is ever impossible! As the story of Christ’s birth unfolds through Scripture and through the music, be encouraged to believe again — for miracles, restored relationships, renewed hope, and fresh faith in this Christmas season. Remember that the greatest gift God has ever given is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Whether you are celebrating with family, walking through a difficult season, or believing God for a breakthrough, this special Christmas episode is an invitation to lift your eyes to Jesus — your Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. May your heart be filled with joy, confidence, and expectation as you receive the Savior who came to redeem mankind. Be blessed as you watch. December 14, 2025 Third Sunday of Advent Rev. Kendra Balliet Organist Jim Ross * Please Stand If Able Prelude Welcome & Announcements *Call to Worship PASTOR: Just as our theme carol asks, “What child is this?” we, too, have come with our questions this day. We go into the world with answers of Good News, being the Body of Christ through our words and deeds. PEOPLE: We Ask, We Answer PASTOR: As we prepare to go into the world, let us ask and answer the question we came with. PEOPLE: What child IS this? PASTOR: This is the one born into a time when unbridled joy was squelched by those in power. PEOPLE: What child IS this? PASTOR: This is the one whose birth would stir the world from slumber and challenge us to know joy that comes from right relationships. PEOPLE: What child IS this? PASTOR: This, this is the “Son of Mary” who shows us the song of life that is ours when we stand up for the least. * Opening Hymn – “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” #89 Lighting of the Third Advent Candle What Child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? Reader 1: We often hear Jesus referred to as the “Son of God” and the “Son of Man.” But this carol points out his identity over and over as the “Son of Mary.” This equally powerful description points to his being reared by a woman who, upon hearing she would bear a child, said “yes” to one of the most difficult and precarious situations she could face. Reader 2: And then she sings with joy a song of justice for the ages. She goes on to guide and help form this child who would tend to the suffering ones. Reader 1: We light this candle of Joy for those who need it most. (Light the First and Second Purple Candles and the Pink Candle.) Reader 2: For all whose despair feels endless. Reader 1: For all who find little joy in daily living. Reader 2: For all whose disappointment runs deep. Reader 1: Our question for today at the scene of the nativity is this: “How can we proclaim a deep joy “in spite of” hardship in our time?” Reader 2: What child IS this? This, this, is the Son of Blessed Mary who reigns with joy forever. This, this is Christ, the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing: Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary! Opening Prayer Here, at the nativity of your birth, give us the courage to face this moment with an uncanny joy. Open us to new understandings of the unfolding story of your presence among us. Show us how to praise you even when songs and carols feel empty. We pray in the name of the Child, the One Who Uplifts our hearts and lives. Amen. DECEMBER 29, 2024 REV. KENDRA BALLIET ORGANIST JAMES ROSS * Please Stand If Able Prelude Announcements *Call to Worship In this last week of our celebration of the beloved hymn classic, “Joy to the World,” we hear this Psalm of Joy juxtaposed with the story of Jesus’ family fleeing with him to Egypt in order to save his life. So, what’s joy got to do with it? The Hebrew root for “joy” that is used 54 times in the Hebrew scriptures–ranan (pronounced raw-nan’)–means “to shout, to cry out” and to “overcome.” Our shouting for joy trains the lungs and the courage to shout aloud for the overcoming of injustice. How will we use our exuberance for the righting of wrongs for the sake of the wonders of God’s love to come upon the earth? Sing a new song to the Lord. Lift your hearts with gratitude and Joy, Compassionate Joy! Your steadfast love and faithfulness is ever present in our lives with Joy, Compassionate Joy! Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. - Psalm 148 * Praise Hymn – “Angels We Have Heard on High” # 238 The Wreath - Let us pray: Holy Living One, You who are our Joy. Give us the strength we need to face the cruelty of the world and meet it with as much Hope, Love and Peace as we can. We give you thanks for the time we have had to contemplate what joy means in our lives and prepare ourselves for the work we will commit to in this next year, offering compassion in all we do. Let wonders of your love rule our hearts this day. Let wonders of your love rule our church this day. Let wonders of your love rule the world this day… in the name of Compassion. Amen. We sing Joy to the World, Heaven and nature sing with joy, Compassionate Joy! Amen! 4th Sunday of Advent ~ December 22, 2024 Rev. Kendra Balliet Organist Jim Ross Prelude – O Come, O Come Emmanuel – Bell Choir Welcome & Announcements *Call to Worship Psalm 98, upon which the hymn, “Joy to the World” is based, names the joyful expression of all creation as the response to the news that the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, is coming at long last. Love, not chaos, will reign and balance will be restored. As we get ever closer to Christmas, we acknowledge with the hymn writer, Isaac Watts, that “God rules the world” -- not with sword or domination – but “with truth and grace”. In this, all nations, all of the world will prove God’s presence in and through this peaceful joy. Sing a new song to the Lord. Lift your hearts with gratitude and Joy, Peaceful Joy! Your steadfast love and faithfulness is ever present in our lives with Joy, Peaceful Joy! Let the sea laugh, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the waters clap their hands; let the hills ring out with joy before the Beloved, who radiates Peace to all the earth. For Love reigns over the world with truth and justice bringing order and balance to all of Creation. * Praise Hymn – “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” #211 The Wreath (The Peaceful Joy Candle:) … Let us pray: Holy God, we await again the arrival of Your son, the Prince of Peace. We long for the peaceful waters of joy that run deep and wide underneath all of life. When we feel the chaos of life bearing down on us, help us to remember that it doesn’t have to be this way. Help us to step into a slower rhythm that is your Peaceful Joy. Let truth and grace rule our hearts this day. Let truth and grace rule in our church this day. Leader: Christ is the solid rock of faith, who was made flesh and suffered death. People: All who confide in him alone are built on this chief cornerstone. *OPENING HYMN “Joy to the World” #246 *LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Leader: Tonight, we light the center candle of the Advent wreath as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. He came to bring us hope, peace, joy and love. He came to bring us salvation through faith in his name. People: Glory to God in the highest! Leader: On the first Christmas night, shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem saw the light of God’s glory and heard the glad news: “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” People: Glory to God in the highest! Leader: The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see the Holy Child. Tonight, we share the joy of those shepherds as, by faith, we too gather to worship our Savior. People: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! (Three purple, one pink, and center white candles are lit on the Advent wreath.) *CONFESSIONAL PRAYER Pastor: On this holy night, let us confess our sins to God and ask his forgiveness. People: Almighty God, although we gather to glorify your holy name, we too often seek glory for ourselves. We follow our own selfish desires instead of loving and serving others as we should. We try to exalt ourselves instead of giving glory to our Lord and Savior. Have mercy on us and forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Lead us by your Spirit to glorify your name in our thoughts, words and actions. Pastor: In mercy and love, God sent his Son to be our Savior. The Holy Child of Bethlehem was born to die as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world. By grace through faith in Jesus, we rejoice in God’s favor and in his peace. I announce to you that your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Joy to the World is one of the more popular Christmas songs of the English language tradition. This hymn brings remembrance of the rich theology … biblical theology … of the incarnation to the hearer. All the earth responds in a new song of JOY at the arrival of God in the flesh. In contrast, secular Christmas music that fills our airways and streaming services does not have In contrast, secular Christmas music that fills our airways and streaming services does not have the JOY that the rich hymns of the Christian faith convey. One favorite secular song from the 20th century Christmas tradition is the Jazz filled theme to the Charlie Brown Christmas. This song contains no lyrics but the jovial rhythm and head-bobbing beat convey a celebration … a time long gone with innocence and childhood fun. Other songs like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” just do not seem to reflect the biblical witness of salvation … the good news of salvation and peace. But the ideas conveyed in the hymn, Joy to the World, express in simple ways the fulfillment of the covenant promises of God to his fallen creation. At the pinnacle of this fulfillment is God entering into humanity … taking upon himself what is not of himself … the sin and human dilemma of struggles and battles with thorns and thistles that came as the result of the first man and first woman’s sin. We will sing this wonderful hymn as our closing hymn of worship tonight. So in preparation for the corporate singing of this wonderful classic from Isaac Watts, let’s take a look at the biblical source for the proclamation of singing “JOY to the World”

Every one of us has sung, “Joy to the World”. The question is, “How do we live with joy?” We begin to answer this question by considering an often-overlooked scene in the Christmas story recorded in Luke 1:39-45. These were life-changing events for Mary and Elizabeth and will be for us as we look at them this Sunday.

Pastor Alexander says, that after two-thousand years we find ourselves living in a Good Friday World of fear, false accusations, suffering, and death. But, because of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, He became the ORIGINAL Empty Tomb Person (never to die again)! Now we too can REJOICE in a pandemic of HOPE, for we are ASSURED that we too by BELIEVING in Him and ACTING on our belief have also become Empty Tomb People! Because He lives…We shall Live Also!

“Everybody tells you to be patient but they don't tell you how to be patient.” – L.T. Bourne   Today's featured author is activist, filmmaker and speaker from the Caribbean Islands, L.T. Bourne. Leo and I talk about his book, his nonprofit “Open Thought” and the qualities of a true leader.   Key Takeaways: “I believe that we all have a story to tell and it's unfair to the next generation for us to take our stories to the grave.” “We have to find ways to let our light shine.” “People feed off of your passion.” Find and live out your passion. Live life fearlessly. Leaders should have integrity, passion and an open mind. The person you know may change within 10 minutes just by getting on social media and seeing a mind-changing post. We live in the age of instant gratification and it doesn't reflect how the process of life truly works. “Take care of yourself and be patient with yourself.”   L.T.'s Site: https://ltbourne.org/   L.T.'s Book: https://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-Mans-World-conquered-ebook/dp/B07TJ9PWR4   The opening track is titled “Amor Vencer” from Subterranean Sessions by MadXruler formerly known as Ruler Inc. Jesus said: “I am the Light of the World” – He wasn’t wearing a sign declaring it. "Light" simply means God’s invisible character made visible in Him. Then He passed the spiritual torch to his us, His followers: “You are the light of the world”. –So it's the same deal – God’s Spirit makes God's invisible character visible in you.

“Lesson from a Cave” This week our VBS theme is – (“CAVE QUEST – Following Jesus the Light of the World”.) As we follow and walk in the light of Jesus, He gives us; HOPE, COURGAE, DIRECTION, LOVE and POWER. These are the lessons that the children have been learning. (Our VBS leaders, teachers and helpers have been spot on!) I have played the part of “Clark Cavern” in the VBS skit (Yes! My last name is CAVERN.) As I read the script and looked over the lessons, I have been reminded and convicted that these lessons are for all of us “big kids” as well. We find ourselves spiritual wondering around in a cave and must continually follow the LIGHT. This story about the great prophet Elijah is about his need for - HOPE, COURGAE, DIRECTION, LOVE and POWER. The wind, and earthquake, and fire, did not make him cover his face, but the still voice did. (Mathew Henry said “Gracious souls are more affected by the tender mercies of the Lord than by his terrors.) Are you in a cave? Go to the entrance where the LIGHT is and listen.

Yesterday, Craig continued his “Week That Changed the World” sermon series based on the gospel of John. Specifically, he focused on John 21:1-2—“Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.” It seems as though the second verse is merely a list of names, but the most important word is together. Craig addressed what it truly meant for these believers to be in fellowship in one place—facing each other after the shame of their actions during the week that changed the world. Craig concludes that it was Jesus, and the power of His resurrection, that held these disciples together, preserving them for the purpose of spreading the story of Christ. In that, the practical application calls for today’s church to consider: What is holding us together and for what purpose are we being held together? How do we face others in the church knowing our own shame? And how do we avoid judging others for their own actions so that the church can function as one cohesive body?

If we are in Christ then we have died with Him and we are raised with Him, He lives in us and we take Him with us everywhere we go and He is with us in everything we do. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me to will and to do His good pleasure. So then why do we get bogged down with the rules and regulations that the world tries to shackle us with?
