Today I talked to Saad T. Farooqi about his new novel White World (Cormorant Books, 2024). Allah has burned the sky away. A mysterious snow falls over everything. Is it an endless winter? Is it the result of a nuclear exchange with India? A celestial impact? Now a barren wasteland, what little is left of Pakistan is heavily segregated along religious lines. For Avaan, a gun in the hand feels as natural as breathing. An apostate pariah living under martial law and religious bigotry, violence has become a way of life. What respite he had from this terrifying world — his brother, his family, and Doua, the love of his life — was snatched away in military raids. Now broken, Avaan finds himself involved in a civil war that poisons everything he's ever believed in. The army shadows his every move, a mob boss wants him dead, and a legendary resistance leader has taken a keen interest in him. But there is a ray of hope: Avaan discovers that Doua is alive. Obsessed with finding her, he takes a stand against the army, the mob, and Pakistan itself with the only thing he has ever been able to count on: the gun in his hand. About Saad T. Farooqi: Saad T. Farooqi holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Kingston University London and a BA in English Literature from the American University of Sharjah. His short stories and poems have appeared in various international magazines. His shining moment on stage was accidentally setting his poem on fire by standing too close to a candle. When not writing, Saad enjoys boxing, experimenting in the kitchen to varying levels of success, and devouring anything film noir. Saad spent the majority of his life as a Pakistani expat in Dubai. He immigrated to Canada in 2015 and currently resides in London, Ontario. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027. My sincere answer is anything you want to! But if it's more helpful for me to specify: I love Mediterranean food. Light, healthy and delicious. Fish would be delightful (altho I also eat meat) with something grainy or pulsey on the side perhaps.” I love it when I get a challenge and get to experiment with new culinary recipes! I wanted to include all of the above to Caroline's meal and I decide to make Japanese infused salmon fillet, with buckwheat, roasted vegetables, cucumber & coconut yoghurt salad on a side. It was a very nourishing meal and Caroline enjoyed my creation. Visit www.mindsetkitchen.co.uk for more information.

Let's talk about softness, and being soft in a world that can be so hard. What does it mean to be soft? I invited Dr. Akilah Cadet to share in this conversation about softness as a human. Together we explore the beauty of connecting with softness, within ourselves and in our relationships. We identify how softness can get squashed and the benefits of connecting with the parts of us that are soft. We unpack the complexity of being a human in a hard world, the dance between anger and softness, harmony over balance, and Dr. Cadet offers a bridge into accessing our agency and power when faced with hardship within ourselves and the oppressive systems around us. Dr. Cadet is the Founder and CEO of Change Cadet. As a Forbes Next 1000 Entrepreneur her work is behind some of the biggest brands you use everyday. Dismantling white supremacy through storytelling is at the core of her work as a leader, speaker, creative director, producer, writer, editor and author of forthcoming book White Supremacy is All Around: Notes From a Black Disabled Woman in a White World. The pair discuss Annahid's latest book, The Bones of Belonging: Finding Wholeness in a White World, which is a poignant collection of essays centered around Annahid's experiences searching for, and teaching about, belonging in our deeply divided world. Jerry and Annahid delve into the little, insidious, persistent ways we feel pressured to abandon parts of our identity, and how creating spaces and organizations of belonging requires that we reconnect with the dismembered parts of ourselves and the knowledge our bones hold. Having the opportunity to sit in conversation with Annemarie Shrouder was an incredible honor. Even better is the opportunity to share her wisdom, peace, insights and grace with those of you who tune into Women We Should Know. I openly acknowledge that my privilege had kept me from considering the difference in how bias is expressed based on the depth of one's melanin—until I read the title of Annemarie's book. The very words Brown in a Black and White World shook me out of that ignorance to this being a unique challenge, unto itself. As Annemarie shared her personal story of finding her way through the shades of others privilege and bias, into a space of such empowerment that she is now recognized as a world leader in the space of ED & I, was filled with immense gratitude for her, her path and what she shares with the world. I invited you to tune into this powerful episode that will educate, illuminate and expand who you are as a human in this world of diversly different, and wonderfully similar human beings. Annemarie Shrouder BIO Annemarie Shrouder has spent more than 20 years in the field of Diversity and Inclusion as a facilitator, consultant, and international speaker, and is the bestselling author of Being Brown in a Black and White World: Conversations for Leaders on Race, Racism and Belonging. A Diversity & Inclusion expert with a Masters in Bias Awareness, Annemarie inspires awareness and connection. Whether she is presenting to an audience, leading a workshop, consulting with a client, or writing, she creates opportunities for people to see more – more of each other, themselves, and the world around them. In so doing, she facilitates an opening to create spaces where people feel a sense belonging and connection, where they can learn together, and be all of who they are. These are the spaces where real change can happen – for people, organizations and communities. Other identities that she brings to her role as a “can opener” include: mother to a 10-year-old daughter, biracial child of immigrants to Canada, queer-identified, nature-lover, believer in the power of connection and the both/and vs the either or, and a multiple gold medal swimmer. Annemarie works with diversity broadly and is passionate about healing the racial divide.

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to announce the next film, "The Intruder" starring Michael Ealy, Meagan Goode, and Dennis Quaid. The film follows a young married couple who buys a beautiful house on several acres of land, only to find out that the man they bought it from refuses to let go of the property. The random topic this week is all about a Black woman at the University of Southern California who started a Black majorette team, a staple of HBCU (historically Black Colleges and Universities) culture. The response has been somewhat divided between Black people being upset that she would create a normally HBCU style team at a PWI (predominately white institution) and others seeing no issues with a Black woman carving out a Black space for her and her friends at this PWI.
