When it comes to the amount of risk your retirement portfolio is under, less is better. But when you're continuously sold the idea that risk is necessary to achieve the gains you want what's a Saver to do? First, you have to know your risk tolerance. (Risk tolerance is the grade of variability in investment returns that an investor is willing to withstand or lose.) Second, your risk capacity needs to be measured. (Risk capacity is an objective measurement of the amount of risk you need to take in order to meet your established financial goals. Risk capacity can also be used to analyse the influence of any risk development on your current portfolio's ability to meet your future financial obligations.) Only then can you proceed with confidence. This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about how asset allocation could be the single most important factor in planning your retirement responsibly. And as in all things in life, there's a right way and a wrong way to diversify your portfolio. Throughout the hour, David talks about: The importance of Tax planning Real estate options as investments Products that contain LESS risk Sequence of return risk How to measure your tolerance for risk How to measure your risk capacity To hear all of the excellent information David Lakas of David Lukas Financial has about eliminating your capacity for risk, listen to the entire show today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Are you interested in the Required Minimum Distribution Guide? What happens if my spouse dies (what are survivor benefits)? What if I'm divorced? Why can't I get any reliable advice from the SS administration/department? Q&A with David: Questions asked and on today's show. Gentleman, Central Arkansas My wife is 62 and is not working. She is eligible for her own benefits. I am 62 and I have no intention of claiming my benefits until the full retirement age (66). It seems like it would make sense for my wife to start claiming her benefits...then upon her full retirement age, claiming her spousal benefit based on the 50% of my full age retirement benefit. Is there any penalty for her claiming her benefits based on her work history now...then claiming her spousal benefits later? Listen to David's advice on this question today! Currently, fifty two million Americans have 4.4 trillion dollars socked away in their 401(k) savings accounts. Right now, in our current up market, everyone's probably pretty happy with their performance. But what would happen to your 401(k), specifically, if the market took a turn for the worst? Do you know how much of your money is at risk? Are you willing to lose up to half of it? Did you know that ignoring your 401(k) could cost you a fortune? This week on the David Lukas Show, David tackles the subject of security in your 401(k) retirement, or as he affectionately calls it your government sanctioned tax postponement plan, and what you can do to be proactively protective of your assets. Throughout the hour, David talks about the seven things that you can do to reboot your 401(k) and keep things on track. Specific items touched upon in today's show: 1. Figure out and know what your comfort level is with the investments you hold 2. Putting in too little? See if your employer has a true up provision program for your 401k program (The feature, called a true up, allows employees to receive employer matches that they would have otherwise missed out on because of 401(k) front-loading or because they spread their 401(k) contributions out unevenly throughout the year-explanation via Google) 3. Putting in too much? If your employer is unable to match your contributions, you may be missing out on funds that should be coming to you but won't. 4. Check the plan documents and know what the plan rules are and think of them as the rulebook for your 401(k) 5. Fine Tuning your contribution levels 6. Research other, savings options for your retirement such as a Roth IRA or a specially designed life insurance contract... 7. Know what requirements, penalties, and fees are applicable on RMDs (required minimum distributions) To hear all of the highly informative information David has for you about rebooting your retirement, listen to the entire episode today. Many of the notions you may have about retirement, could get you into serious financial trouble. Are you prepared if taxes go up? How much will it cost you to pull money from your 401k or IRA? Does your current strategy align with your risk tolerance? This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about recurring myths about retirement. Throughout the hour, David demystifies each misnomer and expands upon how you can prepare for many of the common pitfalls in retirement. Claiming SS as soon as possible is the way to go: Many soon to be retirees are under the impression that Social Security is prime for the taking as soon as they hit retirement age. That assumption can be detrimental to your retirement plan. Setting up a retirement plan with a retirement specialist is your best bet. Social Security Administration will assist you in collecting: The findings of a recent Government Accountability Office report concluded that the agency is consistently giving either bad or false information to retirees on the complicated subject of collecting their benefits. See Related Article: How Social Security Misleads About Claiming Benefits The market will stay or go up forever: When the market is good...everything is oh so good. But as history shows just as all things go up...they also come back down. Nobody could have predicted the damage that was done in the stock market back in 2008. If a fall like that happened again, would your retirement accounts be protected? Medicare will cover your healthcare costs: Healthcare seems so uncertain right now and many retirees are assuming that Medicare is free and that it will cover it all after retirement. There is also the assumption that Medicare will cover costly long-term care. Unfortunately that just isn't so. Your investments will steadily create income, for you, after retirement: Unless you plan carefully and dutifully protect your assets, they may not be there for you to depend on. You shouldn't own any permanent life insurance: Many of us assume we don't need permanent life insurance. Instead they opt for term and “plan” on investing the difference. The reality is, most don't and most don't realize the flexibility and value of permanent life insurance. If any one of these critical issues were placed before you, would you be prepared? If you knew that there were certain safe holds to secure your financial future and ensure that you could retire with less stress, would you take them? Would you choose a worry-full future or The WorryFree Retirement®? This week on the David Lukas Show, our host talks about what risks may be involved with your “basic” 401k retirement plan. Because there's nothing worse than hoping for the best and receiving the worst. One area that can have a significant impact is to be proactive in planning your retirement by ensuring you aren't taking unnecessary risk, especially if you are invested outside of your risk tolerance . Throughout the hour David mentions and expands upon other risk including: The risk of not saving enough The risk of skyrocketing health care prices The risk of not being diversified in your investments The risk of continued low interest rates Unnecessary Fees that cripple your savings The risk of having no plan for retirement The risk of future tax increases. How an annuity might be good for you So what comes of blind 401k planning? A Hope and Prayer Portfolio. What the heck is that, you ask? Well, a H&P Portfolio is an investment portfolio filled with both high fees and high risk investments. Ergo, the holder places all hope that his/her investments are in their best interest and he/she is praying that their portfolio performs well. Reality Check: more times than not, this strategy doesn't pay off for the investors—it is common for people to take way more risk than they want. Want to know what David has to say about all of this? This week on the David Lukas Show, our host asks his listeners, “what is your 401k doing for you?” Because when it comes to retirement, most Americans have done little more than the basics. In fact, millions have contributed, monthly, to their 401k, (or as David affectionately calls a tax-postponement plan.) Throughout the hour, David talks about what's waiting for you when you're ready or need to collect on your 401k and explains all the different actions needed to minimize taxes and avoid fees and penalties. David talks about how tax-diversification can be the key to retiring WorryFree®. Just as someone shouldn't put all of their hopes into one dream, a retiree shouldn't put all of his or her money into one product. Penalties, fees, RMDs (required minimum distributions) and the possibility of having to pay within a higher tax bracket are just a few of the MANY reasons why every retiree and future retiree needs a solid game plan for their retirement. So if 401k's aren't the best option for you in retirement, then what are your options? Every year thousands of retirees get caught in the pitfall that is collecting Social Security. What many people don't know is that without knowing how to set it up correctly or when you should have all of your preparations finalized you could be setting yourself up for disaster. On this episode of the David Lukas Show, our informative host talks about all the important things YOU NEED TO KNOW about Social Security. Throughout the hour he educates his faithful listeners on the many common mistakes retirees make and what you can do to avoid them. So what are the pitfalls of Social Security you ask: Spousal benefit - Some states don't recognize certain marriages therefore they can't use the spousal benefit Survivor and death benefit - If you remarry before the age of 60—50 if you're disabled—you can no longer receive survivor benefits based on your deceased spouse's work record. The survivor benefit is reduced if you collect before your own full retirement age File and suspend - Doesn't help single people Delayed claiming - If you die before you collect benefits, you and your spouse will miss out on that income Lump-sum payment - Once you get the lump sum, your future monthly retirement benefit is reduced to reflect the amount you already received. Spousal benefit in divorce - You can claim the spousal benefit if you've been married for 10 years or more. But if you remarry, you can not collect the spousal benefit from your ex's work record. Therefore, your spousal benefit will be reduced if you claim earlier than your full retirement age. Benefits while working - If you claim retirement benefits before full retirement age and continue to work, Social Security will withhold a set amount of your monthly payout above a certain annual income. In 2015 it will withhold $1 for every $2 earned over $15,720. Special rules apply for the specific year in which you reach full retirement age.) “As we peer into society's future, we -- you and I, and our government -- must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower This week on the David Lukas Show, David talks about all the caveats the government has made concerning your Required Minimum Distribution Amounts in retirement and what you need to know about the many rules that apply. Throughout the hour, David gets into the specifics needed to properly prepare for when retirees start taking distributions from their IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and/or SEP IRA. The mistakes are too costly not to plan properly. Did you know that the IRS deems account holders ultimately responsible for calculating their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) amounts on their retirement funds—not the account's custodian? Do you know the IRS's rules on Required Distribution Amounts (RDAs)? According to irs.gov... “You cannot keep retirement funds in your account indefinitely. You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 70½. Roth IRAs do not require withdrawals until after the death of the owner. Your required minimum distribution is the minimum amount you must withdraw from your account each year. You can withdraw more than the minimum required amount. Your withdrawals will be included in your taxable income except for any part that was taxed before (your basis) or that can be received tax-free (such as qualified distributions from designated Roth accounts).” Get All of the important INFORMATION and FORMS needed to properly calculate your Required Amounts HERE.
