Episode 70 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is award winning novelist, comedian, poet, and storyteller Derrick C. Brown.Derrick first discovered poetry as a young man enlisted in the United States Army. He often found himself spending hours in foxholes needing to pass the time. He began rewriting psalms from his military-issue Bible in a more relatable language and, after serving in the 82nd Airborne, continued to explore poetry. He became involved with the Long Beach and Orange County Poetry Slam community, competing at his first National Poetry Slam in 1998, where he placed second in the individual championship. He began touring with his poetry shortly thereafter. Early in his career, Brown often toured solo. However, he has since become known for touring and collaborating with other artists. To date, Brown has written four children's books, a musical, and eight books of poetry, including the 2013 Texas Book of the Year, STRANGE LIGHT.In October 2006, Brown teamed up with poet, TV and film actress, and activist Amber Tamblyn for several poetry performances in California called THE LAZERS OF SEXCELLANCE. Brown also collaborated with painter Blaine Fontana for a live reading and gallery opening of new paintings based on Brown's work. In 2007, Brown toured Europe opening for the band Cold War Kids, chronicled in the documentary film about him, YOU BELONG EVERYWHERE. That same year, Brown performed as a poet on THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jay Leno. In 2011, Brown was commissioned to write a 40-minute-long poem for the prestigious Noord Nederlands Dans Collective. The work, titled INSTRUMENTAL, received rave reviews in the Netherlands and Canada. In 2014, he was commissioned to write poems about soldiers for the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum. These poems were later performed by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The following year, Brown was again commissioned, this time by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, to create a new work for the J.M.W. Turner Exhibit. In 2016, Brown toured as the opening act for Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs. On his most recent tour in 2017, Brown toured the United States and Europe, opening for rock band Rival Sons. He also often tours and performs with comedians, including David Cross, Kristen Schaal, Jon Glaser, H. Jon Benjamin and Eugene Mirman. In 2017, Brown wrote, directed, and produced his original musical 300 BONES. Later that year, he performed an original piece called “If You Were God...” in Israel, reading alongside the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company members, Martin and Shani who choreographed their dance program based on Brown's poetry. Brown is known for being an innovator in curating unique and creative poetry adventures like the DOUBLE DECKER POETRY BUS PARTY and poetry shows at sea for POETRY CRUISE, which he started in Long Beach, CA. He is also the creator of THE LIGHTBULB MOUTH RADIO HOUR, a literary variety show. PARTY WITH HONOR is his latest literary variety show in Los Angeles, CA.Perhaps his biggest accomplishment to date is his creation of Write Bloody Publishing in 2004, which FORBES and FILTER Magazine call “…one of the best independent poetry pressed in the country.” The press is known for utilizing a rock & roll, indie record label model, uncommon for a poetry press. At the center of Write Bloody is the philosophy that to create a lasting career and engage with your audience, you can't simply publish a book and hope for the best. Every author on the press is required to tour and perform their works to build a lasting fan base. This has proved incredibly successful for the press. To date, Write Bloody Publishing has released 134 volumes of poetry, including books by Sarah Kay, Clint Smith, Andrea Gibson, Anis Mojgani, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz and Taylor Mali. Also on Episode 70, Wendi and Dfernando discuss his newly trimmed white beard and her manicurist's assessment of her dressed-down, casual appearance. On THE RIPE REPORT, Dfernando shares his love for Magnolia Bakery's Banana Pudding and Apple Crisp Pudding, and Wendi shares 23andMe genetic testing, which helped reunite her and her family with a cousin. How do you connect with yourself? In a world full of distractions, noise, and the constant battle for other’s attention, it can be really easy to get lost in connecting with others and forget to connect with who we really should be connecting with: ourselves. Arielle Estoria grew up in an environment where she did not feel she was able to fully connect with her body. It wasn’t until she began to get a little older and in the process of entering into marriage when she started to realize that her body felt so separate from her soul and what was inside of her body. This realization led her to begin on a transformative journey to connect deeper with herself and find grounding in whom she desired to be seen as, not by others, but by herself. In this episode, we chat about how she met her husband, her process in learning how to truly love and connect with herself, what “grounding” means to her, and so much more. Tune in to learn how to seek acceptance by connecting with yourself on a deeper level, and see below for a full list of lessons/topics covered in this episode with Arielle. Besides being a spoken word poet, she’s an emcee and event host speaker, model, and actress. She believes that we are all creative — we’ve just told ourselves it isn’t practical. She teaches us some tools to try and reclaim our creativity. This girl totally speaks my language. You’ll love everything she has to say, including the poem she shares with us. This is a soul-filling conversation. Question Highlights: How did you know that part of your soul needed to be exposed? Can you elaborate on creating structure around your creativity? How did you discover and nurture your creativity? How do you piece together a creative, varied life? How do you teach poetry? What are some of your favorite poetry prompts? What is a truth you have learned about relationships? What is a truth for you around business or career? Guest Bio: Arielle Estoria is Spoken Word Poet, Author, Dance Party Enthusiast, Emcee and Event Host Speaker, Model, and Actress. “Words not for the ears, but for the soul.” This is Arielle Estoria's mantra. She is a writer, speaker, and creative based in Los Angeles, CA. When Arielle was invited to speak in Nashville, TN, at Aboundco, she was given total freedom to write whatever she wanted. She graciously shares what she wrote with me and you! One line that stands out for me is “When is the last time you danced with your creator?” Tune in to the episode to hear her beautiful poem and our conversation about love, prayer, and singleness. Faith and Love We talk about what it means to navigate life as a single woman of faith today. When you are longing for a relationship, it is easy to focus just on that and not focus on yourself in the present. “I have been called to speak and to teach and to preach just as a man has been called to speak and to teach and to preach.” One of Arielle's very first events she read a poem at, she had a woman approach her and ask her “Do you ever wonder if God spent as much time with Eve as he spent with Adam?” This is a thought that revisits her constantly and we explore what comes up for her when she thinks about it. “Before she even knew that there was a man anywhere near or for her, she only knew her creator.” Seasons of Life In any season of life, there are a lot of opportunities to learn about yourself. “There's always those shadow spaces you probably ignore.” As an enneagram type 4, she recognizes that her feelings dominate everything. She has found that she has to sit and assess situations that she feels hurt by. “Not everything has to hurt your feelings.” In her season of singleness, she has come to learn a lot, particularly the importance of calling out your desire. Arielle wants a man with blue eyes who is kind to everyone around him. And guess what? She is allowed to desire both of those things. God is always listening. “Even my smallest of desires and wants and needs, you take them and you consider the whole of them.” Facing Expectations Arielle notes that we can be so obsessed with something we've lost that we can't see what is coming our way. God is always opening doors for us. “It's not going to look like how you think it's going to look.” And that is always a good thing, even if we don't know it in the moment. “There are so many little things that we need to figure out for ourselves before we can ever be who we need to be with another person.” The grass always seems greener, but we acknowledge the freedom of the season of singleness. It's important to enjoy the season you're in, no matter which season it is. “The highs are going to be high and the lows are going to be low and we have to take in every part of each one of them.” Want more of Arielle? You can check out her website, Instagram, and Twitter. She also has two books on Amazon right now called “Vagabonds & Zealots” and “Write Bloody, Spill Pretty.” I hope she inspired you as much as she inspired me. The students from the Thomas Starr King Middle School Writers Club will be sharing their work with the world with author/teacher Steve Abee. It is an inspiring evening of young poets and artists telling it like it is. Steve Abee was born in Santa Monica, California and began writing after high school when he held a job as an orderly at St. John's Hospital. His mind started to unfold itself and he thought if he was going to save it he better start writing things down. “I saw the fragility and blessedness of lives and started to come apart in the wonderment of it all.” He is the author of the new poetry collection, Great Balls of Flowers out now with Write Bloody books, and the upcoming novel Johnny Future with MacAdam/Cage; also he authored the Los Angeles underground classic The Bus: Cosmic Ejaculations of the Daily Mind in Transit (Phony Lid Books), and the collection of short stories and poems King Planet (Incommunicado). He lives and teaches in Los Angeles. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS JUNE 9, 2010.
