No Country For Old Men is a slow, agonizing and anxiety inducing film. We hope this podcast about it isn't the same! We talk about: Fantasy Life, Trap, H. Jon Benjamin, Fake Documentary Q, Kingdom Hearts 2 Is Over, Lvl 30 Life, Under Night In-Birth II [Sys:Celes], Cormac McCarthy Books, Our High Level Thoughts, Haircut, Trackers, Fucking Up, The Gas Station, Sip Of Milk, Tents and Shotguns, Woody's Dad, Shoot-Out, Fixing Up, Woody's Gone, Does Bell Suck?, SNL Grandma, Ashley's Smart, Cat Dad, Book Changes, Copaganda, Ashley Was Part Of A Drug Deal, Pig In The City,
This week we're excited to present a conversation from this year's edition of New Directors/New Films with Familiar Touch director Sarah Friedland and cast members Kathleen Chalfant, Carolyn Michelle, and H. Jon Benjamin. This conversation was moderated by New Directors/New Films co-chair Dan Sullivan. Presented by The Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) takes place through April 13, and has, since 1972, showcased new and emerging filmmakers whose distinctive visions and risk-taking works highlight the vitality and potential of cinema. The Opening Night selection of this year's festival, Familiar Touch is about an octogenarian named Ruth (played by Kathleen Chalfant) who has been living independently, but cracks have started to emerge: toast is placed to dry in the dish rack, confusion rests on her face, the dead are spoken of in present tense while the living (such as a son right before her) go entirely unrecognized. Her entrance into an assisted-living facility begins the strange, transcendent journey that is Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland's feature debut, which earned three awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, including the Lion of the Future, Best Director, and Best Actress for Chalfant's astonishing turn. Friedland builds her drama through sharp honesty, and tough as its material may be, few films are so tonally flexible, so able to turn on a dime: stray moments of tenderness, humility, even absurdity poke through, with a love and care for Ruth shown by characters and creators alike. Familiar Touch portends the arrival of major directorial talent and we were honored to have it as the opening night selection of the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films. Familiar Touch will open in select theaters beginning June 20th, courtesy of Music Box Films.
I speak with Jon Benjamin who recounts his meetings with Margot Honecker, the unrepentant architect of East Germany's education system and widow of GDR leader Erich Honecker then living in exile in Chile. In 2012 and 2013, when Jon was British Ambassador to Chile, he had three long meetings with Margot Honecker, third wife of longtime East German leader, Erich Honecker, and Minister of Education of the German Democratic Republik (GDR) in her own right from 1963 to 1989. In a remarkably frank speech at the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President JD Vance warned that the greatest threat to Western democracies is not external aggression, but the erosion of free speech within them. Britain, he argued, was leading the charge in policing thought, with other European nations close behind. Invoking the Cold War, Mr Vance said that the West once defined itself in opposition to regimes that criminalised dissent and censored ‘heretical' views – but now its governments are adopting such tactics themselves. Freddie Attenborough has written about the speech in detail here. As if on cue, The Telegraph reported on Saturday that the closure of two French TV stations had been confirmed by the Council of State, the Republic's highest administrative court. The FSU was proud to have a presence at the Association for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) Conference 2025, alongside many other civil rights and free expression advocacy groups. A key moment at the conference was the Free Speech dinner where our General Secretary, Lord Young, delivered the opening speech. The conference also provided the perfect platform to announce the launch of FSU International – an initiative designed to coordinate the efforts of existing FSUs around the world, and to support those looking to set up new ones. To drive the initiative forward, we've appointed Jon Benjamin, a former British Ambassador, to lead FSU International. On Wednesday 19th February, in the heart of Westminster, the FSU marked its fifth anniversary with a packed gathering of supporters and donors. In just five years, the FSU has established itself as a leading voice for free expression, standing up for those targeted for wrongthink in an increasingly censorious culture while ensuring that the right to speak one's mind is defended in the workplace and the public square. We end with a round-up of forthcoming FSU events. ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

One Song Nation – won't you smile for another episode? Because we know you're gonna love it! On this episode of One Song, actor, comedian and musician Jon Benjamin (Archer, Bob's Burgers) joins Diallo and LUXXURY to break down one of Steely Dan's most beloved, jazz-infused songs from 1977, “Peg.” They discuss the lengths the band's core duo – Walter Becker and Donald Fagen – went to achieve their vision for this song and its album 'Aja' (it took 40 musicians!), and why it may be “one of the strangest hits to ever grace the mainstream.” (Pitchfork's words, not ours.)
JON BENJAMIN makes his long-awaited return to the Best Show! In addition to giving a transcendent performance of his Jazz Daredevil act, he also has a nice long chat with Tom! Tom is back from his wedding and honeymoon. He takes your calls and chats with Mike about all kinds of stuff. Tom also gets a call from JOHN DOUGH IN TORQUEBRIDGE! SUPPORT THE BEST SHOW ON PATREON! Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson return to the podcast to discuss Justice Warriors: Vote Harder from Ahoy Comics. But first, has it been 100 episodes since we last spoke to Matt and Ben? How old is everyone's kids? Is this comic dumb in a good way? How is this comic connected to 9/11? Is there an overall message the comic is trying to convey? Was Vote Harder only released as a trade? Has Justice Warriors predicted the future multiple times? Is P. Diddy a fall guy? Is there a secret conspiracy hidden within the comic? Would Ben make a great Riddler? Are we fans of zaniness? What are some of our favorite gags in the comic? What is The Great Popping Off? Do pneumatic tubes still exist? Is this the most political comic out this year? Was Robocop and Starship Troopers a big include on Justice Warriors? Is the Akira slide in this comic? How did they get H. Jon Benjamin for the Vote Harder trailer? How deep can Ben go on 9/11? How do we feel about Yellowstone? What hopes do they have to take Justice Warriors to the world of animation? What other potential plots for future volumes do they have in mind? What are the Meatball Riots? Will there ever be Justice Warrior one-shots and mini-series? Are Schitt's kids terrifying? Are the characters lovable even though they aren't necessarily good or self aware? Was this a compelling read for us? Could we predict the outcome of Bubble City's election? Did the comic end on a positive note? Do we feel bad for liking cops in media like The Wire? Is Justice Warriors officially greenlit for a third volume? What can we expect from Matt Bor's new Toxic Avenger series from Ahoy? Does Matt have a thing for mutants, especially the ugly and weird ones? What mainstream comic series would Matt and Ben like to work on? What is Planet Gun? Should Swamp and Schitt become space cops? Do we like volume 2 of Justice Warriors more than vol. 1? Would Justice Warriors make a great Adult Swim series? Would we sell out for Marvel money? And will Vote Harder get the highly coveted 666 Pesci rating? What would Swamp and Schitt's Mortal Kombat fatalities be? Is Justice Warriors relevant in the dumbest ways? Find out the answers to these and more on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic! This week on The First Run, since everyone is talking about ‘Challengers', Chris and Matt watched ‘Boy Kills World'. Genre films are the bread and butter of The First Run, and no amount of Zendaya led love triangles and threesomes will keep them from their revenge-action films. Was there even an Eiffel Tower in ‘Challengers'? Don't waste anyone's time. Hooked by the H. Jon Benjamin narration, Is there enough butt-kicking to save the day? Then it's on to the IFC/Shudder original, ‘Late Night With The Devil'. David Dastmalchian leads the viral hit about a struggling talkshow that tries to boost ratings by interviewing an actual possessed kid. What could possibly go wrong? There's abs-packed rundown of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Viper Video Picks of the Week, AND the return this week of the Straight to DVD Pick of the Week. Finally Matt and Chris close out the show with a hot and spicy round of ‘Call It!'.00:00-12:07: Intro/Boy Kill's World12:08-22:06: Physical Media Picks22:07-35:48: Late Night With The Devil35:49-53:46: Call It!53:47-56:32: Wrap UpTheme music by Jamal Malachi Ford-Bey
In this episode of BirdNoir, the private eye gets a call from H. Jon Benjamin about unusual Wild Turkey behavior. A male turkey (known as a “tom”) won't leave his car alone. He keeps tapping his beak on the car. Then the turkey starts circling the house and looking in all the windows. The private eye reveals how things look from the turkey's perspective, which points the way to a possible solution.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? If your audience isn't engaging with your posts, they're not opening your emails and your webinars are empty, it's time to tweak your marketing strategy.Your marketing strategy has become a pattern; a pattern your customers are used to. They know what's coming, so they tune it out. And the last thing you want to be is part of the noise. So we're going to show you how to pattern interrupt. According to a Mailchimp article, pattern interrupt is “a neuro linguistic programming (NLP) tactic used to disrupt a customer's usual thought process or behavior… [around] cold calls and other marketing and sales strategies to change how they think and feel.” In this episode, we're going to share how pattern interrupt is a key tool in re-engaging your customers as well as catching the attention of new potential customers. And we're learning about pattern interrupt from a show that does it so well: “Archer.”So in this episode, we're having a watch party of the Emmy Award-winning series "Archer" with Head of Content Marketing and Customer Education at Apollo.io, Josh Garrison. And we're chatting about how to engage your audience with pattern interruption, why you should spend time developing complex characters, and how to provide value by teaching your audience a new skill with each piece of content. So stick on a fake mustache and strap on your Omicron Spymaster watch for this episode of Remarkable.About Apollo.ioApollo.io combines a buyer database of over 250M contacts and powerful sales engagement and automation tools in one, easy to use platform. In the last year, they've grown ARR 3x, quadrupled their active users, and closed a $110M Series C led by Sequoia Capital in March of 2022. They continue to grow faster each month with record months of sales and added ARR.About ArcherArcher is an animated tv series parodying espionage culture about a James Bond-esque spy named Sterling Archer in a dysfunctional intelligence agency headed by his own mother. The show is set in a sort of Cold War era universe. The highly stylized animation is inspired by classic comic books. The animators describe the style as “puppety,” in that a limited amount of drawings are made, and then they put rotation points from which the drawings can move. The show was created by Adam Reed and made by Trinity Animation with the voice of Archer played by H. Jon Benjamin. It also includes the voices of Jessica Walter of Arrested Development, Aisha Tyler from Criminal Minds, and Chris Parnell from SNL. It originally aired in 2019 and is currently in its 14th season. It has won at least 3 Primetime Emmys among other numerous awards and nominations. About our guest, Josh GarrisonJosh Garrison is Head of Content Marketing and Customer Education at Apollo.io. He joined Apollo.io in December of 2022. Prior to his current role, he served as Head of Revenue at Teamflow. He has also held leadership roles at Autodesk and inDinero. He co-founded SpotMe Lending, an alternative to payday, auto title and pawnbroker loans, and Ledger Leaders, a bookkeeping and accounting services business. What B2B Companies Can Learn From “Archer”: Use pattern interrupt. Use a familiar interaction but pivot suddenly to catch your audience off-guard. Josh says that in “Archer”, “they do the thing where they set up a joke and then the punchline of the joke is a cut scene to someone else saying it.” It helps with pacing, and moving the story line along while making the audience laugh.Develop complex characters. Characters simply feel more like people when they have flaws, preferences, history… And building believable, relatable characters takes time, intention, and thought. The characters in Archer immediately feel lived in from the first episode. Josh says, “The first time you meet every character, you get the essence of that character. There's no wasted time there.” The characters are multi-dimensional, neither purely good or bad. They're human. Ian says that Archer “is the best spy in the world. But he's super narcissistic and he's pretty mean and self-serving. But there's this element of heart to him. Like he loves animals, he has a real affinity to certain people at his work. He's an a**hole, but he's our a**hole.” As a complex character, he's much more interesting and relatable than if he were simply a good person, good spy, good protagonist. So before you create content, spend time thinking about your characters' backstory, personality, motivations, and more, to flesh out a character that will resonate with your audience.Borrow from nostalgic content. The artwork of Archer is inspired by classic comics and 1960s superhero cartoons. The show borrows from James Bond and espionage culture. So the show has elements that feel very familiar while at the same time being quite modern. Josh says, “It's very unique, but it also feels familiar because they're calling back to things that you've seen and read throughout your early life.” So it draws people in with its nostalgic artwork but creates super fans with its modern tone, fast pacing, and cutting humor.Quotes*”Marketers are bored of our own playbooks. They're like, ‘Oh man, I'm doing another webinar.' Or they're like, ‘Oh, we gotta write another ebook?' Those are old ideas. But that doesn't mean that those things don't work anymore. When I explore pattern interruption, I'm still gonna run a webinar. But in that webinar, how can I subvert the expectation? How can I set people up to think they're gonna get one thing, and then give them something that's way more than they hoped or bargained for, and just go beyond?” - Josh Garrison*”Salespeople will engage with anything that will make them money. That's the guiding principle of our content marketing strategy. Put yourself in the shoes of a salesperson and ask yourself, ‘Would I read this? Before I commit to reading it or watching it, am I convinced based on the headline or the title or the description, that this is gonna bring enough value to me to help me improve my ability to make money?' So we start there. That's actually a pretty high bar. It's really hard to do. It means that you can't make any fluff, because fluff doesn't make anybody money.” - Josh Garrison*“What we try to do is go two steps further than [typical content,] and it's like, ‘I'm gonna open up Apollo. I'm gonna show you exactly what to do.' Something that's so actionable that by the time somebody finishes engaging with a piece of content, whether it's a video, webinar, or article, they have gained a new skill.” - Josh GarrisonTime Stamps[0:58] Introducing Head of Content Marketing & Customer Education at Apollo.io Josh Garrison[1:59] Why are we covering Archer?[3:13] What makes Archer remarkable? Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Manhattan's prosecution of Donald Trump, Biden's new tax plans, the RNC teaming up with Ronny DeSantis (who privately has affirmed a 2024 presidential campaign), Santos' prolific history of scamming, a potential Saudi-Iran deal, and Manchin's possible run vs Biden in 2024. They also tackle Nikki Haley positioning herself to be Ron DeSantis' VP before Digby joins to dive deeper into this Republican rift that we see forming between Donald Trump's crazy CPAC coalition, and the Republican donor class' attempt to juxtapose Ron DeSantis' “moderate” fascism against it, looking particularly to the rhetoric about entitlements and the deficit that is coming out of the two camps. Looking forwards, Digby walks Emma and Sam through Donald Trump's likeliest routes to victory, before they wrap up the interview by tackling Joe Biden's confirmed and likely challengers in a Democratic Primary. Matthew Film Guy then joins to run his soft propaganda campaign for H. Jon Benjamin, assessing the (once again) lackluster Oscar nominations, and giving his own film suggestions of “Post Tenebras Lux” and “Margaret.” And in the Fun Half: Ed Markey goes after Norfolk Southern executives' desire to escape accountability for the disaster in East Palestine and JD Vance forgets that deregulation is actually what caused the incident. A GOP Lt. Sam and Emma host Raymond Jackson, President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689, to discuss the recent strike by Loudoun County Transit workers in Virginia. Then, they are joined by Helena Bottemiller Evich, founder of the publication Food Fix, to discuss the recent developments within the FDA and the issues surrounding Abbott's baby formula. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Trump's pleading of the fifth for the 400th time, the AP African American course updates, Nikki Haley launching her run for the GOP nomination in 2024, Hochul siding with her corporate lobbyists once again, and the previous abuses of the cops that killed Tyre Nichols, before parsing through Biden's State Department's refusal to acknowledge the apartheid and oppression faced by Palestinian people. Raymond Jackson then joins as he dives into the context of ATU Local 689's strike as it reaches its third week, with Keolis taking over Loudoun Transit in 2021 and promptly cutting health benefits and forcing workers into outrageous workloads, all while serving the richest county in the US. After walking through the one-sided bargaining that has taken place in the wake of the takeover, Jackson discusses the other transit strikes inspired by Keolis's takeovers, before they wrap up the interview by exploring the various ways to support Local 689 both from Virginia and afar. Helena Bottemiller-Evich then dives into the recent announcement of a major reorganization of the FDA amidst intense scrutiny over their food management, tackling the baby-formula drama that put this issue front and center, and why, despite decades of dysfunction, this issue only just came to a breaking point. They discuss the impact of Donald Trump's takedown of the administrative state, and why it didn't impact the revolving door of drug-focused administrators, before taking a step back to look at the much greater issues that faced the FDA's actual attempts to regulate food, particularly in terms of its funding and relationship to the industry it supposedly regulates. Wrapping up, Helena, Sam, and Emma tackle the recent updates to FDA regulation, including taking heavy metals out of baby food, and how to bolster the US' ability to regulate the food industry. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Donald Trump staking out his violently transphobic agenda, the major PACs that stand in line with him, Lindsay Graham's defense of supporting Trump despite his agenda being mirrored across the GOP, and Jonah from Montreal discusses Crowder's legacy in Canada. Chris from the Twin Cities dives into the dangers of increasing transphobic policy, Ben Shapiro wishes Black people would just comply with the Police's conflicting commands, Tony discusses the challenge of balancing means-tested social welfare with low-income budget changes, and H. Jon Benjamin has a heart to heart with Sam about the issues he brings to the Bob's Burgers studio, plus, your calls and IMs! As a child actor, Jason Woliner knew he wanted to be a Director. He started with a mini DV camera and set out to make a feature for Sundance. He dropped out of college, convinced a few friends to join him, and ended up making a “long student film.” The 97-minute “terrible, horrorible” project taught him a great deal about filmmaking. Over the years, Jason has worked with Patton Oswalt, Aziz Ansari, and Jon Benjamin. He's Directed Parks and Recreation, New Girl, Nathan for You, and Last Man on Earth. Most recently, Jason has created the unusual mini series, Paul T. Goldman. The description reads, “One man's efforts to uncover the truth thrust him into a labyrinth of fraud, deception, and criminality that transform him ‘from wimp to warrior.'” Like Borat, it's a mixture of real and unreal, focused on one unusual character. In this interview, Jason talks about his love for specific comedies, why he generally avoids “for hire” work, how he found a unique niche in the comedy industry, working for “real laughs” during a pitch, and how to execute on unique ideas to find the “best, funniest version.” Subscribe for video interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/CreativePrinciples?sub_confirmation=1 If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It only takes about 60-seconds and it really helps convince some of the hard-to-get guests to sit down and have a chat (simply scroll to the bottom on your iTunes Podcast app and click “Write Review"). Enjoy the show!

When the COVID pandemic started, comedian and actor H. Jon Benjamin and his family moved to a secluded house by a creek in upstate New York. And living there, he started to get really interested in birds. He began videotaping himself getting excited about seeing birds and sharing these “bird reports” with his Twitter followers. And many people were delighted to see them.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at the New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam's joined in-studio by comedian H. Jon Benjamin to discuss his new Jazz Daredevil Whisky Highball! First, Sam runs through updates on the Respect for Marriage Act, Alito's role in Supreme Court leaks, and more, before parsing through Sinema's incredibly unsurprising choice to leave the Democratic party. Osita Nwanevu then joins as he dives right into analyzing whether there will be a material impact on Sinema going independent, before diving into lingering stories from the midterms, including Maricopa county, grappling with a Warnock win alongside an Abrams loss, Trump's role in the GOP's losses, and why the Right really should blame their obsession with culture wars. Next, they walk through whether the Right will see a shift back towards an anti-immigrant culture war, what the Democrats (with a majority in the Senate) can do about immigration policy, and why the American public became more liberal on the topic throughout the Trump presidency. Wrapping up, Osita and Sam tackle the state of the Democratic electorate, parse through the future of the Democratic party under their new leadership, and explore why DeSantis isn't much of an actual departure from what the public dislikes about Trump. Then Sam is joined by alleged comedian and actor H. Jon Benjamin to discuss his educational background and new canned concoction the Jazz Daredevil Whisky Highball! And in the Fun Half: Sam dives deep into the recent hearing around the 2014 Hobby Lobby leak, parsing through the astonishing news that the various influential far-right political lobbying institutions do indeed influence far-right Supreme Court justices, and whether there will be any repercussions for the multiple Justices involved behind the scenes. He and the crew also tackle Bari Weiss' Twitter Files pt. 2 as she and the rest of the online right forgo reading comprehension in favor of their reactionary impulses, and discuss Rep. Vicky Hartzler's harrowing experience grappling with Gay people having rights, plus, your calls and IMs! First up this week is our very special guest Camillo (Cam) Kline, Nick's second son. Since turning 9 (which is the same age Ciri was when he was on the podcast back on episode 38), Cam has really excited to come on the show and talk about his favorite band, AJR! Comprised of three brothers, AJR are put in the Indie pop genre, but Cam thinks they're more electronic alternative and he loves where they're going as a band. We listen to their progression over the past 12 years and agree and we were so happy to have him on!Songs:AJR - “Bang!”AJR - “Infinity”AJR - “Go On Take a Chance”Jay found a poignant article about the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, whose purpose is “aimed at promoting Ukrainian culture and denouncing Russia's invasion.” We also discuss and listen to the 1970s band the Relatives, whose 2013 & 2016 revival albums are a story worthy of a film.Song: The Relatives - “Things Are Changing"Finally, Greg brings us the 2015 jazz album “Well I Should Have…” by Jon Benjamin. Jon Benjamin, known primarily for his work as a voice actor (Bob from Bob's Burger, Archer from Archer, etc), doesn't play the piano & has never really liked jazz that much. He just thought it'd be funny to make a jazz album playing piano with top notch drums, bass & sax behind him…and he was right, it's hilarious!Song: Birth - “For Yesterday”

The private eye reveals how things look from the turkey's perspective, which points the way to a possible solution. Learn more at BirdNote.org.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, actor H. Jon Benjamin began sharing his experiences with birds in his “Morning Bird Report” videos on social media. For April Fools Day, BirdNote has invited him to test out his birding-by-sound skills on a one-of-a-kind quiz show: Bird…NOT! Jon has to guess whether the sound is a bird or not — which isn't always as easy as it sounds. Learn more at BirdNote.org.
