J., Teipel, S., Wagner, M., Wiltfang, J., Yakupov, R., Jessen, F., Duezel, E., Perneczky, R., Rauchmann, B.-S. Abstract: Background: The mechanisms in the brain that explain the benefits of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDiAd) for cognition are incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether fractional anisotropy (FA) in hippocampus-relevant white-matter tracts mediates the association between baseline MeDiAd and verbal episodic memory over four years. Methods: Participants with baseline diffusion-weighted imaging data from the DELCODE cohort study were selected, including healthy older adults with and without subjective cognitive decline and patients with mild cognitive impairment (n = 376; age: 71.47 plus-or-minus sign 6.09 years; 48.7% female). Demographic, MeDiAd, and diffusion data were obtained at baseline. Verbal episodic memory was assessed at baseline and four yearly follow-ups. The association between baseline MeDiAd and verbal episodic memory's mean and rate of change over four years and the mediation of that association by baseline white-matter tracts were tested with latent growth curve modeling. Potential mediators were selected based on the association with hippocampal volume. Results: Baseline MeDiAd was associated with verbal episodic memory four years later (latent intercept; 95% confidence interval, CI [0.01, 0.32]) but not with its rate of change (latent slope) over this period. Only baseline Fornix FA, among four potential mediators (the cingulum ventral, corticospinal tract, and superior longitudinal fasciculus II), mediated this association (latent intercept; 95% CI [0.002, 0.09]). Conclusions: Higher Fornix FA explains the association between higher baseline MeDiAd and better memory four years later in pre-dementia stages. Fornix FA may be a useful response biomarker of Mediterranean diet interventions on memory. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Plasma concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-β are associated with hippocampal structure related to explicit memory performance in older adults

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.21.521442v1?rss=1 Authors: Raschick, M., Richter, A., Fischer, L., Knopf, L., Schult, A., Yakupov, R., Behnisch, G., Guttek, K., Düzel, E., Dunay, I. R., Seidenbecher, C. I., Schraven, B., Reinhold, D., Schott, B. H. Abstract: Human cognitive abilities, and particularly hippocampus-dependent memory performance typically decline with increasing age. Immunosenescence, the age-related disintegration of the immune system are increasingly coming into the focus of research as a considerable factor contributing to cognitive decline. In the present study, we investigated potential associations between plasma levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and learning and memory performance as well as hippocampal anatomy in young and older adults. Plasma concentrations of the inflammation marker CRP as well as the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF- and the anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-{beta}1 were measured in 142 healthy adults (57 young, 24.47 +/- 4.48 years; 85 older, 63.66 +/- 7.32 years) who performed tests of explicit memory (Verbal Learning and Memory Test, VLMT; Wechsler Memory Scale, Logical Memory, WMS) with an additional delayed recall test after 24 hours. Hippocampal volumetry and hippocampal subfield segmentation were performed using FreeSurfer, based on T1-weighted and high-resolution T2-weighted MR images. When investigating the relationship between memory performance, hippocampal structure, and plasma cytokine levels, we found that TGF-{beta}1 concentrations were positively correlated with the volumes of the hippocampal CA4-dentate gyrus region in older adults. These volumes were in turn positively associated with better performance in the WMS, particularly in the delayed memory test. Our results support the notion that endogenous anti-inflammatory mechanisms may act as protective factor in neurocognitive aging. Copy rights belong to original authors. A brand new week is underway, which means the boys from the Real Life Podcast are back with a brand new episode to help you ease back into work life after another round of practice retirement. On today's show, the guys looked at Devan Dubnyk's comments from the DFO Rundown, the Oilers goaltending situation, and a whole lot more.Kicking off today's podcast, the guys got started with another acknowledgment of Chalmers being back in the studio after another mini hiatus. With that out of the way, the guys got the podcast started with a look at Devan Dubnyk's comments on Nail Yakupov from the DFO Rundown and how the goaltender suggested in no uncertain terms that the former first overall pick was not his favourite teammate. Sticking with the Oilers, the guys then spent the next few minutes gushing about Zach Hyman's game and how he is the exact type of player that this city loves based on his effort and tenacity. The guys then tackled the goaltending situation and how we would split the starts over the next little bit as it's clear that Stuart Skinner is the better option in net right now. From there, the podcast fell off the rails a little bit as the guys discussed their favourite podcasts and TV shows that ranged from Chalmers' crush on Will Arnett to Tyler's love of Arrested Development. Lastly, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of Real Life with a random collection of topics, including the World Cup, beer prices in Qatar, and a whole lot more. Hosted on Acast. Two sleeps until the NHL regular season begins, but the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast is already in full swing with a new episode jam-packed with all of the latest hockey news and fantasy spin.  We start with two awful real-life injuries that have an urgent fantasy impact, suggesting which Penguins and Panthers may get or take a bump while Crosby and Huberdeau are on the shelf. Then, Elan and Brian turn their attention to the NHL's waiver wire, where 3 more-than-serviceable players sit after being surprisingly let go in advance of the season opener. In particular, Brian plays the role of wet blanket to perfection by doubting whether Ondrej Pavelec's waiving means clear skies ahead for Hellebuyck, and also provides his dream scenario for P.A. Parenteau in 2016-17. The guys then roll through some of the season's newest Calder Trophy candidates as news trickles out of which prospects are making their teams out of camp, with stops in Philadelphia, Chicago, Anaheim, Toronto, Columbus and Montreal. Finally, we share all the opening night line combos we've seen and mine them for hints at fantasy fortunes in the year ahead, zeroing in on a top-line winger in Detroit, a questionable piece in Ottawa's top six, an expected shift in Chicago, a rising youngster in Boston, and a multi-generational combo in Arizona. And still, there's more! The Yakupov trade, how to handle injured players, whether to trade for injured players, RFA situations, last-minute IR stashes, pre-season scoring leaders.. and tons more info that'll give you the early upper-hand in your fantasy pool as we head into the season.
