Episode: 00254 Released on February 17, 2025 Description: In the second episode of the Research Remix series, Jason and Jamie Roush dive into one of the most debated topics in law enforcement analysis—hotspot policing. They explore the evolution of hotspot strategies, from the Kansas City Preventative Patrol experiment to the Minneapolis police experiments, and discuss a groundbreaking recent study in Dallas. The discussion breaks down how Dallas implemented a unique 100x100 meter grid-based approach, leveraging both high-visibility policing and offender-focused strategies. Jason and Jamie analyze key takeaways from the study, including the impact of targeted police presence, the concept of diffusion of benefits, and the importance of data documentation for analysts. Whether you're a law enforcement analyst, researcher, or just passionate about crime reduction strategies, this episode offers critical insights into how micro-place policing can contribute to citywide crime reduction. Tune in as we examine the research, the results, and what it all means for the future of crime analysis. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Truth is Universal: Robust Detection of Lies in LLMs, published by Lennart Buerger on July 19, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. A short summary of the paper is presented below. TL;DR: We develop a robust method to detect when an LLM is lying based on the internal model activations, making the following contributions: (i) We demonstrate the existence of a two-dimensional subspace, along which the activation vectors of true and false statements can be separated. Notably, this finding is universal and holds for various LLMs, including Gemma-7B, LLaMA2-13B and LLaMA3-8B. Our analysis explains the generalisation failures observed in previous studies and sets the stage for more robust lie detection; (ii) Building upon (i), we construct an accurate LLM lie detector. Empirically, our proposed classifier achieves state-of-the-art performance, distinguishing simple true and false statements with 94% accuracy and detecting more complex real-world lies with 95% accuracy. Introduction Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit the concerning ability to lie, defined as knowingly outputting false statements. Robustly detecting when they are lying is an important and not yet fully solved problem, with considerable research efforts invested over the past two years. Several authors trained classifiers on the internal activations of an LLM to detect whether a given statement is true or false. However, these classifiers often fail to generalize. For example, Levinstein and Herrmann [2024] showed that classifiers trained on the activations of true and false affirmative statements fail to generalize to negated statements. Negated statements contain a negation like the word "not" (e.g. "Berlin is not the capital of Germany.") and stand in contrast to affirmative statements which contain no negation (e.g. "Berlin is the capital of Germany."). We explain this generalization failure by the existence of a two-dimensional subspace in the LLM's activation space along which the activation vectors of true and false statements separate. The plot below illustrates that the activations of true/false affirmative statements separate along a different direction than those of negated statements. Hence, a classifier trained only on affirmative statements will fail to generalize to negated statements. The activation vectors of multiple statements projected onto the 2D truth subspace. Purple squares correspond to false statements and orange triangles to true statements. Importantly, these findings are not restricted to a single LLM. Instead, this internal two-dimensional representation of truth is remarkably universal, appearing in LLMs from different model families and of various sizes, including LLaMA3-8B-Instruct, LLaMA3-8B-base, LLaMA2-13B-chat and Gemma-7B-Instruct. Real-world Lie Detection Based on these insights, we introduce TTPD (Training of Truth and Polarity Direction), a new method for LLM lie detection which classifies statements as true or false. TTPD is trained on the activations of simple, labelled true and false statements, such as: The city of Bhopal is in India. (True, affirmative) Indium has the symbol As. (False, affirmative) Galileo Galilei did not live in Italy. (False, negated) Despite being trained on such simple statements, TTPD generalizes well to more complex conditions not encountered during training. In real-world scenarios where the LLM itself generates lies after receiving some preliminary context, TTPD can accurately detect this with 952% accuracy. Two examples from the 52 real-world scenarios created by Pacchiardi et al. [2023] are shown in the coloured boxes below. Bolded text is generated by LLaMA3-8B-Instruct. TTPD outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in generalizing to these real-world scenarios. For comparison, Logistic Regression achieves 798% accuracy, while Contras...

Abstract: Background: The mechanisms in the brain that explain the benefits of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDiAd) for cognition are incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether fractional anisotropy (FA) in hippocampus-relevant white-matter tracts mediates the association between baseline MeDiAd and verbal episodic memory over four years. Methods: Participants with baseline diffusion-weighted imaging data from the DELCODE cohort study were selected, including healthy older adults with and without subjective cognitive decline and patients with mild cognitive impairment (n = 376; age: 71.47 plus-or-minus sign 6.09 years; 48.7% female). Demographic, MeDiAd, and diffusion data were obtained at baseline. Verbal episodic memory was assessed at baseline and four yearly follow-ups. The association between baseline MeDiAd and verbal episodic memory's mean and rate of change over four years and the mediation of that association by baseline white-matter tracts were tested with latent growth curve modeling. Potential mediators were selected based on the association with hippocampal volume. Results: Baseline MeDiAd was associated with verbal episodic memory four years later (latent intercept; 95% confidence interval, CI [0.01, 0.32]) but not with its rate of change (latent slope) over this period. Only baseline Fornix FA, among four potential mediators (the cingulum ventral, corticospinal tract, and superior longitudinal fasciculus II), mediated this association (latent intercept; 95% CI [0.002, 0.09]). Conclusions: Higher Fornix FA explains the association between higher baseline MeDiAd and better memory four years later in pre-dementia stages. Fornix FA may be a useful response biomarker of Mediterranean diet interventions on memory. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

You probably have heard about CuneXus, the CUNA Mutual company that helps a credit union sort through its members and determine which offers - car loans, personal loans, credit cards and more - this member is eligible for without filling out a loan application.Read the last six words again: without filling out a loan application.Think about it: most credit unions already have all the data they need on hand to approve or deny a member's request for credit. So why not tell the member what he/she is eligible for?It works. Your CU 2.0 Podcast host personally received a letter from his principal credit union that told me I was eligible for a bunch of things including a credit card. It occurred to me I had no credit card with the institution so why not? Basically I said I'd take it and, whoosh, it arrived. On my desk now is another letter from that CU offering me my choice of a car loan, a personal loan, a checking line of credit, or an auto refinance deal.See how this works?A couple hundred credit unions are CuneXus users and they are because this is a way to make members more profitable to the credit union while also giving members friction free access to new credit tools.Enter Union Credit, a new Santa Rosa, CA based fintech with the plan to build upon what CuneXus does by extending the same kinds of credit offers to non members of the credit union. This is all about member acquisition, said Dave Buerger, a co-founder of CuneXus and now CEO of Union Credit. Buerger is on the show today along with Barry Kirby, also a CuneXus alum and now a co-founder of Union Credit.Right now Union Credit is available only to CuneXus customers (and CUNA Mutual is also an investor in Union Credit). That means setup of Union Credit at a credit union will be a breeze.Face it: filling out a loan application is a hassle. Who wouldn't cheer a program that ditches the loan app and says, which product do you want? You are pre approved. For real.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? When Andrew Buerger's sister was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, her courage and strength spurred Andy to turn pain into a passion. Andy founded Jodi's Climb for Hope, which raised more than $900,000 for research by leading mountain-climbing expeditions-an apt metaphor for the struggles women affected by breast cancer endure. In 2008 tragedy struck again when Andy's wife Jen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Jodi's Climb for Hope expanded the scope of its mission into multiple sclerosis research as well. On an expedition in Iceland, Andy discovered something that he developed into B'More Organic, a protein drink that Inc. magazine ranked as the fifth fastest-growing natural brand. With engaging mountaineering, business, and personal stories, Andrew shares the guiding principles that have helped him navigate the peaks and valleys of his life. ✨A few highlights from the show: 1. Since 2007, Climb For Hope has taken over 250 people safely up summits around the world, raising approximately $750,000 for early-stage research. 2. How could you speak up to help those who have no voice because they suffer from human trafficking? Today's guest, Andi Buerger, shares her personal story and mission which culminates in the ministry she provides to advocate for victims. Andi is the founder of Voices Against Trafficking and is an active warrior against 21st-century slavery - human trafficking. Her journey began when she survived 17 years of child sex trafficking from the age of 6 mos to 17 years. After her escape, Andi had a choice - to live for herself or to fight for others trapped by predators. She chose to fight. Andi has become a tough fighter for human rights. Buerger states that she recalls serving in a soup kitchen after suffering her fourth brain injury. Despite challenges to her memory during that time, homeless teens made an unforgettable impression on her heart. Andi and her husband established Beulah's Place in Redmond, Oregon, a ministry to rescue homeless, abused, and at-risk teenagers. Andi and I discuss the need to create safe places for kids, where they can speak up if someone mistreats them. Buerger also details ways to educate the community and better protect our children. In today's podcast you will learn about Andrew Buerger, founder of Jodi's Climb for Hope And also the Director of Rare Earth Adventures, an expedition guiding company based in Portland, OR. When Andrew Buerger's sister was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, her courage and strength spurred Andy to turn pain into a passion. Andy founded Jodi's Climb for Hope, which raises money for research by leading mountain-climbing expeditions—an apt metaphor for the struggles endured by women affected by breast cancer. When tragedy struck again and Andy's wife was diagnosed with MS. Jodi's Climb for Hope expanded the scope of its mission into multiple sclerosis research as well. Through these selfless creations Andrew also developed a protein drink, B'More Organic which is ranked as the fifth fastest-growing natural brand by Inc. Magazine. From all of his experience, engaging mountaineering, business, and personal stories, Andrew wrote the book, Carrying a Flag From Pain to Passion which portrays the guiding principles that have helped him navigate the peaks and valleys of his life. It was an honor to interview Andrew and learn how he persevered through all of these experiences. Andrew is truly one of a kind and to learn more about his journey by purchasing his book, Carrying a Flag From Pain to Passion.
