May was Mental Health Awareness Month - but just because the month is over doesn't mean we should stop talking about it. I can't think of a better guest to remind us of this: someone who is a prime example of taking your pain and trauma and turning it into something that can help and empower others. Kate is a wellness blogger, yoga instructor and entrepreneur based in Philadelphia. Kate promotes health through mindful living, intuitive movement, food freedom and a body positive message. After recovering from an eating disorder and experiencing childhood trauma, Kate chose to heal through community. She now shares her story with her audience in hopes of about building a community centered in authenticity and radical self love. (Kate is also a dog mom, lover of matcha lattes and anything "woo woo", from crystals to astrology and tarot.) Kate is the co-founder of a wellness events business, The GOOD Festival, which hosts festivals, retreats and workshops nationally. Kate was recently names 1 of 25 Influential Women to Watch in Wellness by Yogiapproved.com and her story and writing have been featured in mindbodygreen, Yoga Digest and Thoughtfully Magazine. This episode is AMAZING for anyone who wants to build a community of like-minded people sans the BS (whether in-person or online), interested in creating serial success instead of being a one-hit-wonder, loves wellness but is looking for a little more substance than what's on-trend, is curious as to how wellness practices can ACTUALLY heal past wounds and trauma...and, speaking of trauma, anyone who has either experienced trauma in their past that might be holding them back, or knows someone who is still working through their own trauma and might not even recognize it. So grateful to Kate for sharing so much of herself and being so willing to talk about some sensitive subjects. (Note: we do not go into graphic detail, but if you have experienced trauma or abuse, please be mindful that we DO talk about these subjects. We make sure we don't speak in a triggering way, but everyone is different - you know yourself best.) Show Notes: Website Instagram The GOOD Fest Jessica Murnane on the WANTcast (and here!) Welcome to the Spoon of Consciousness Podcast - this channel is dedicated to helping you along your journey of spiritual awakening and personal development with podcasts about the law of attraction, spirituality, yoga and many more topics. Ashton is a yoga teacher, writer and the founder of YogiApproved.com. In this episode we talked about the health benefits of yoga, the best way for beginners to get into the yoga lifestyle and how the practice of yoga can help us on and off the mat. 00:20 - Ashton introduces herself and her website YogiApproved.com - a great site that I also contribute to where you can find articles related to yoga and spirituality. 1:00 - How did you start the website? Ashton started out at university and once she graduated started teaching yoga. She then combined her skills writing and teaching yoga to create the online publication. 02:10 - What are the benefits of starting a yoga practice? Yoga bliss continues long after stepping off the mat, there are great physical benefits like strengthening your core and increasing your range of motion. It also helps with your mental and spiritual health - yoga teaches us that we're capable of so much more than we think. 04:15 - How important is the breath? Taking deep conscious breaths is key - taking short, shallow breaths stimulates our fight or flight response. Conscious breathing on the mat helps with movements but off the mat it helps with a wide range of problems as well as helping us to stay present. 06:25 - How has yoga helped you to manage your anxiety? Yoga can help with anxiety as a tool to deal with it. Yoga is the vehicle we use to break through the anxiety and teaches us acceptance - acceptance that we can experience anxiety from time to time but also that we can deal with it. 08:00 - Yoga poses force you to be in the present moment which can help to alleviate anxiety. 09:10 - What's the best way to start a yoga practice? Starting small is key to receiving the benefits of a yoga practice or the health benefits of yoga. Mindfulness is also an important part of a meditation or yoga journey. 11:10 - What was the idea behind starting the website? Ashton created the YogiApproved website from a personal blog to reach a wider audience. 12:30 - How did you find the entrepreneurship journey? Entrepreneurship is challenging - but anything worthwhile is! Entrepreneurship is not an easy path and everything comes back to you - the motivation is the visualisation of your future. 14:30 - How is patience in entrepreneurship? Patience and being realistic are absolutely key in the day to day challenges that arise in entrepreneurship. Being patient with ourselves is important. 16:55 - How do we deal with failures along the way? Take time to assess what we've accomplished but also take time to learn from the mistakes. 18:55 - Ashton dispels the rumour that luck is what makes success in entrepreneurship. Hard work creates the luck that helps you along this journey. 20:35 - What is your process of manifestation? Using the law of attraction, visualisations to bring things into your reality. When it comes to manifestations we need to recognise that thoughts become things. Ashton explains how to manifest using the law of attraction. 23:05 - How can we recognise the power that we have to create our reality? Start small, assess your mental habits - samscaras are the mental grooves we weave in our brains with thinking habits. 28:22 - Ashton explains the difference between Kundalini and other types of yoga. There are other types such as Vinyasa, Buti, Kundalini etc. Ashton's Socials: Website - http://www.yogiapproved.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/YogiApproved Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yogiapproved/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/yogiapproved Pinterest - https://uk.pinterest.com/yogiapproved/ Thank you for tuning in and be sure to like, share and subscribe!
