If you've ever found yourself fully booked but still broke, constantly second-guessing your business decisions, or feeling like you've created another full-time job for yourself… This chat is for you. I jumped on with the lovely Jess Manton, a literacy specialist and tutoring business owner, to talk about: The reality of what was going on behind the scenes just a month ago What shifted to help her move forward (mentally and practically) The key changes she's made in her business that are already making a huge impact How support, strategy and community have changed everything And… how she just won a business award (!!) after nearly walking away We also cover: Why amazing tutors still undercharge (and what to do about it) Moving past decision fatigue and into confident action Letting go of perfection and getting practical instead The power of getting out of your own head and being in the right room Want what Jess has? Jess is part of The Profit Pathway, my 6-month business coaching program that helps tutors clean up the backend of their business, understand their finances, charge properly and build systems that give you your time (and sanity) back.
Let's be real. If your tutoring business has started to feel overwhelming, unpredictable or just bloody hard… you are not alone. In this episode, I'm getting a bit ranty (in a loving way) because I see way too many brilliant tutors building businesses that are burning them out, and not paying them properly. If you're spending hours chasing payments, running sessions, answering messages, doing late-night admin… and still wondering, “Why am I not getting ahead?” This is your wake-up call. I'm sharing: Why more students won't fix your business (and what will) The 3 simple systems that changed everything for me - and will change things for you too! How to move from overwhelmed and underpaid… to clear, confident and actually profitable Why being “just a tutor” is not the problem, but winging it is And the real reason so many people stay stuck (even when they're working more than they did in the classroom) This episode is for you if: → You're booked (or busy) but not paying yourself properly → You're second-guessing everything and stuck in the day-to-day → You know things need to change — but you don't know where to start You've done the hard bit. You've started. You've built something. But now it's time to clean it up — and build a tutoring business that actually works for you. Links that I mentioned in this episode:
You started this business for freedom… But now it feels like you've built a never-ending to-do list instead. Your calendar's full, your energy's low and no matter how busy you are, you're still not seeing the income or freedom you expected. In today's episode, I'm sharing the three big areas that overwhelms tutors (and keeps them stuck ‘winging it') and what to do when everything feels like too much. Tune in to learn: Why being “fully booked” doesn't always mean profitable The cost of wearing every hat in your business The mindset trap that keeps you hustling instead of planning Why Canva might be stealing your precious time and how to fix that What to focus on first if you're serious about making changes The importance of tracking time and money (even if it feels scary) Let's get clear on your next move. And yet your business still isn't giving you the income, clarity or flexibility you wanted. In this episode, I break down exactly why that's happening, and what you need to do instead, if you want a tutoring business that actually works. You'll learn: Why “doing more” isn't fixing anything The four key reasons tutors feel stuck, overworked and underpaid What to focus on if you want to stop winging it and start feeling clear, confident and in control Why confidence comes after taking action (not before) Ready to change this? Episode Summary: In this episode of "Classroom to Business," I share a deeply personal story that intertwines my journey with Crohn's disease and my professional life as a classroom teacher. Exactly 14 years ago, what started as a typical teaching day quickly unfolded into a medical emergency, revealing the stark realities of living with Crohn's disease and the relentless stress of classroom responsibilities. My condition had a profound impact on my life, serving as a catalyst for my eventual transition from teaching into business ownership. Key Takeaways: Chronic stress from demanding jobs can act as a trigger for health flare-ups, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions like Crohn's disease. Establishing and respecting personal boundaries is crucial in managing both health and career, particularly in high-pressure environments. Transitioning from teaching to business ownership requires learning new skills and adopting new mindsets for efficient business management. Many educators entering the business world unintentionally recreate stressful, unsustainable work patterns instead of seeking a flexible work-life balance. This is a bit of a controversial topic, but I'm going to go out there and say it….. You NEED a really good website for your tutoring business if you are taking it seriously and want to grow your numbers and revenue. And to have a really good (amazing) website, there's a fair chance you will need to outsource this… Not go at it yourself. In this episode, I share What a website can do for your business Why some tutoring businesses need them and others don't What you need for a good website Why I strongly recommend you do NOT do your own website The negative impact an average website can have on your business Head to the link in my bio, or search ‘Classroom to Business' wherever you listen to your podcasts. When we play a game, the only way for it to succeed is if everyone knows the rules. Well, your business is very much the same. If you haven't created rules, if you haven't shared them with the other players and if you haven't ensured that everyone is following them, then your game isn't going to fair so well. Some people will start to ‘cheat' (knowingly or not), and this will lead to all sorts of issues for you, the game and the other players. In this episode, you will discover: Why you need to set the rules and ensure you enforce them What happens when you don't tell your parents the rules How you can ensure lower dropoff rates as the term comes to an end Some examples of what happens when you change your rules If you need some templates (including a cancellation policy) in your business to help set your rules, check out the Tutoring Template Toolkit. Or if you would like to do a strategy session with me, then CLICK HERE and let's do some specific work on your business, so that you can ensure you aren't having students cancel and/or drop out. Last weekend I ran our first ever ‘Teachers in Business Retreat' at Cabarita Beach, northern NSW, and it was a huge success. It was the perfect balance of work, relaxation, connection and fun! Over the weekend, a main focus for the ladies was to really get serious with their goals (and set them up seriously, not just as wishy-washy words that sounded good), and then work together to create super clear action plans for the next 6-12 months to help them achieve those goals. Lots of brand new ways of growing their businesses were discovered, lots of questions and challenges were answered and lots of collaboration meant some great friendships were made. It truly was an inspiring weekend. Because all the ladies had done such solid work and made such amazing progress, I thought it would be the perfect time to get them out of their comfort zones and bring them onto the podcast to chat. In this episode, I talk to the ladies to find out… Their biggest takeaways from the weekend What they loved about the retreat What their big, hairy goals are for 2024 If you would like to be on the waitlist for the next Teachers In Business Retreat, then CLICK HERE and be the first to know when the dates are set and the booking opens up. The Christmas holidays are coming up and that means most tutoring businesses are about to lose all their regular students and hit a VERY slow period, which means a decrease in revenue. It might not seem like a big deal, but from my own experience, I know that 4-6 weeks of little-to-no income can have you stressing out and really struggling to stay afloat. To avoid this, we need to be proactive. NOW is the time to be figuring out what you are going to do, so that you don't end up running out of money and not being able to pay the bills. NOW is the time to be planning ahead, pricing up costs and working out how you will run these programs to make a profit. NOW is the time to start taking action and promoting these holiday classes, so that you have money coming in, even if you don't have your regular tutoring students . Don't leave it until it's too late! In this episode, I share The most common time that tutoring businesses lose revenue Options to overcome this challenge Ways to implement new holiday services What things to do NOW to make sure you can continue to have revenue over the Christmas holidays If you want some help to create and implement new holiday services into your tutoring business, but you aren't quite sure how to nail it, then book a 1 hour private coaching call with me and we will create an action plan and know exactly what steps you need to take. I think all of us have those ‘memorable moments' in our teaching careers (possibly more than one), where something has really hit a nerve. It's made us want to do more and it's made us even question if what we are doing in the classroom is enough. In this episode, I talk with Kristy Haworth from ‘All Kids Can Education'. If you're like me, you probably don't like confrontation. It makes me feel all sorts of uncomfortable and uneasy. In business (and even in the classroom), we can come across parents who are unhappy with something, and often we end up on the receiving end of anger, disappointment, confusion, overwhelm, etc. I found the best approach was to be calm, positive and prepared! Now we can't prepare for all situations, but there's a LOT of things that we can have in place and be aware of, to minimise these situations and then ‘put the fires out' if/when they arise. In this episode, I share with you: - How to decrease the chance of the uncomfortable situations arising - What to do if/when they do arise - How you can ensure you are on the same page as your parents to avoid confusion and awkward conversations If you enjoyed this episode and you'd like to learn more about growing your tutoring business and dealing with situations (of all kinds) that arise in this industry, then make sure you check out the Tutoring Growth Membership. All too often tutoring business owners bury their heads in the sand when it comes to their business finances. I get it. We are educators by trade. We don't all love numbers and some of us totally freak out at the thought of maths beyond year 2, so trying to understand business financials seems like such an impossible task! Plus we have lesson planning to do, resources to create and students to tutor! In this episode, I talk with Malisa Clarence from The Ask Hub. With 21 years of bookkeeping experience with mostly small businesses, Malisa gets it. So, to help us out, she shares with us… The common mistakes people make, when it comes to the finance side of their businesses How to stay on top of your business finances Why you need more than just a spreadsheet to record the numbers in your business The benefit of having an accounting or bookkeeping software system from the start The importance of understanding your numbers and how simple it can be If you are trying to figure out how many hours you need to work in your tutoring business and what prices you need to charge to get to your financial goals in your business, then check out my TUTORING CALCULATOR. Back in episode 4, I covered ‘What to Charge for my Tutoring Services' but today I am going one step further to a place that scares the heck out of so many people and makes most of us kind, caring educators feel super uncomfortable… raising prices in your tutoring business. Let's be honest, offering JUST 1on1 tutoring can only get you so far. There are only so many hours in a day, which means only a certain amount of students that you can work with and only a certain amount of revenue that you can make. I also discuss the pricing considerations you will need to take on and some of the different types of group services that you can offer. A lot of us in tutoring businesses have big, kind hearts and are really passionate about making a difference and ensuring every child has access to the support we are providing. This is not a bad thing, however when it's at the cost of our business, our profits and our own families, then it's definitely not a good thing! In this episode, I share some examples of when my feelings and emotions have gotten the better of me in my tutoring business, why being kind and super caring isn't actually always helpful and what we can do to support our families and our own businesses instead. A lot of business owners think branding is just about the logo, colours and fonts that are used for their businesses, BUT what most don't know is that it's also about the personality of your business and how you make your audience feel when they are interacting with you. This is so important when it comes to effective marketing. In this episode, Donna Hann and I cover some really important topics that align with both dance studios and tutoring businesses… How to attract your ideal potential customers The importance of having a clear goal from the beginning How to shape a really beautiful culture within your business Creating effective marketing using emotional perspective instead of manipulation. How branding is not just about your logo and colours. It's also about creating a perspective of how your customers will perceive you and be made to feel. When Jacinta started her business, she was a member of the Tutoring Growth Membership. She was in the start-up phase of her business and had no business experience or real idea of the true potential that her business had. As teachers, we have kind, caring hearts and we genuinely want to help people and make a difference with the work that we do, BUT… We aren't always great at charging (appropriately) for the services that we provide. In this episode of Classroom to Business, I share the top 5, biggest mistakes that many tutoring businesses make, when it comes to pricing. I also discuss ways to avoid making these same mistakes in your own business! If you enjoyed learning about what to do (and not to do) in your tutoring business, then I invite you to head to the link HERE and book in for a free discovery call, where we can chat some more about where you are at with your business dreams and ideas, and how I can help you further.
