Welcome back to the Hater Hour. It's a solo episode hosted by Caroline while Jess takes a mental health break — take note people! Breaks are GOOD FOR YOU and actually entirely necessary. Unfortunately for you, the solo Hater Hour means there is no one to tame Caroline as she dives into discussion of self-improvement, trying to make a big life changes, trying/failing to change others, difficult parent relationships, open relationships (again), fashion offenses, and the forgotten Jonas Brother.  She also opens up about some recent mental health struggles and why you deserve to get help for yourself, no matter how “slight” or “casual” your struggle feels. There is also a major confession involving Tide Pods. It's complicated.  __ This episode was edited by none other than our prince, Abi Newhouse. DM her for your audio editing needs! __ Share with a friend! To wrap up our Summer of Podcast PD, we're ending with a series on grading practices. And one of the hot topics that's particularly relevant in secondary classrooms is the act of cheating. This is a topic that I feel very passionate about, so I've invested in my own research to find the best strategies and solutions. In today's episode, I'm sharing what you can do to best prevent it, how to respond when it does occur, and specific strategies to use in your classroom. In this world we live in, technology is everywhere, and our students know how to use it to their advantage. And while cheating is an academic issue, it can be prevented. There are a lot of things I do in my own classroom that eliminate the pressure and act of cheating that's related to how I choose to grade assignments, labs, and tests. I discuss what I do along with my reason for not giving homework. But since we know that cheating will eventually occur at some point during the year, what do you do? With different perspectives on how to handle the situation, I provide my must-haves and then encourage you to have conversations with colleagues and other staff to ensure common language and policies. And for those who use my It's Not Rocket Science resources, I share ways to use them without the fear of cheating. If you're like me, you probably don't like confrontation.  It makes me feel all sorts of uncomfortable and uneasy.  In business (and even in the classroom), we can come across parents who are unhappy with something, and often we end up on the receiving end of anger, disappointment, confusion, overwhelm, etc.  I found the best approach was to be calm, positive and prepared!  Now we can't prepare for all situations, but there's a LOT of things that we can have in place and be aware of, to minimise these situations and then ‘put the fires out' if/when they arise. In this episode, I share with you: - How to decrease the chance of the uncomfortable situations arising - What to do if/when they do arise - How you can ensure you are on the same page as your parents to avoid confusion and awkward conversations If you enjoyed this episode and you'd like to learn more about growing your tutoring business and dealing with situations (of all kinds) that arise in this industry, then make sure you check out the Tutoring Growth Membership.  Doors are open 28th August - 6th September 2023. In this episode, I talk with a mother and answer the question “How do I navigate a relationship with my difficult parents who do not support my gay son?” This mother grew up in a home where individuality was discouraged, and she often felt attacked for sharing opinions that differed from her parents'. Their traditional Christian views are unsupportive of her son, and she worries for what they will say that may make him feel unloved and invalidated. At the same time, however, she feels immense guilt for opposing her parents in any way.During our time together, I ask this mother what she longs to hear from her parents. She tells me she wishes to have her parents accept her, hear her, see her, and support her in making her own choices. She shares experiences from her life that detail how she has worked tirelessly to get this validation from them but has not received it.I encourage this mother to ask her parents to listen to her and validate her experience. It's possible her parents don't know how to respond in a healthy way, so I ask if she could give her parents the words that she wants to hear from them. I also urge her to find adults who can nurture her in this stage of life.Have you ever thought, “I want to ask Dr. Julie Hanks a question”? Well, now's your chance! I want to have you on my podcast! The Ten Commandments tell us to “honor thy mother and father”, but what does that really look like? Especially for adult children? Parents are not perfect, and sometimes they make mistakes that leave us and others wounded. So when God tells us to honor them, what does he mean by that? There’s a certain respect that all are owed simply by their personhood, and then there’s a respect that someone deserves because of their role or position. But what if our parents are dishonorable people? Does this commandment change once we’re adults out of their direct care? Today, Father Mike explains how we can love difficult parents.

In this episode, we will be doing things a little bit differently. We have been getting a lot of letters from you guys, and we want to be able to read more of them and respond more fully, so today we will be reading through not just one, but multiple letters! You’ll hear a letter to someone who hopes their ex gets the help they need, a letter from a stepmother with a confession, and more. As we read through these letters, we will also take the time to talk through them and discuss the situations. Listen in as we discuss how to better communicate with an ex and the importance of working and focusing on ourselves. You will also hear how we deal with sharing time, creating routines, and communicating about rules and routines. 4:02 – 5:39 - Our plan to read more letters. 5:40 - 7:47 - A letter to an ex who needs help. 7:48 - 9:14 - Why it’s so important to know you’re not the only one going through the things that come with divorce (and not be afraid to reach out). 9:15 - 13:39 - The difficulty in relaying helpful feedback in a difficult relationship. 13:40 – 16:42 - A letter from a step-mom who feels relieved when her stepkids are away. 16:43 - 19:02 - Knowing that it takes time to find your groove as a mixed family. 19:03 - 25:43 - How to know what can slide and when to be consistent. 25:44 - 31:17 - A letter to an overbearing father and what to do when your ex may be narcissistic. 31:18 - 37:55 - A letter about a TikTok dilemma and how to promote better morals in your home.   Takeaways: The importance of going to counseling and working on yourself. Why you need to be okay with feeling relieved when step-kids leave the house. How to handle an ex who is too hard on your child. Why it's crucial to document when a lot of issues are occurring with the other parent. How to express your concern about what children put on the internet.   Quotes: “I used to think we were the only ones who couldn’t figure out how to get along, but then I started seeing people all over the place who were having issues. I really hoped when we got divorced that we could get along.” - Anonymous “To let it out, to journal—it brings some type of relief.” - Summer “Be the consistent parent that shows a good example and try to be the best you can for your kids when it’s your time and opportunity. Eventually, the kids will be attracted to that and they’ll want more of that.” - Mike   3 Interesting Clips: 10:30 - 12:27 - What to do when you want to give feedback to a difficult ex. 17:11 - 17:50 - The feelings of missing out on focused attention in a mixed family. 18:01 - 19:03 - What you can control in your home and the importance of communicating with your spouse when it comes to home routines.   Links: Text us: 760-389-3722 Send us an anonymous letter Subscribe & Review in iTunes! In this episode we're going to be talking about "Strategies for Dealing with Difficult Parents." Parents of school children don't usually come to our college classes to interact with us. And even during our field experiences in actual schools, parents are more interested in talking to the “classroom teacher” than the student teacher. Hence this area puts the student teacher at a loss. Unlike the seasoned teacher which has had the experience  of dealing with parents.

Sutter Keely is a smart, goofy, sensitive, troubled, unserious, and lost teenager who doesn't have the best Executive Function skills. Sutter is the main character in the movie ‘The Spectacular Now' whose life choices are not that off the mark for a teenager but do certainly stand out from his sweet, focused, ambitious, and future-centered ex-girlfriend or the studious, hard-working, curious, engaged, and caring new girlfriend. This movie beautifully captures the angst of a young man who hasn't yet discovered the purpose of learning, the value of good habits, nor has he tamed the wild emotions such as anger, loneliness, and sadness that rule his decision making. But all in all, this movie helps us understand how to look for the composite portrait of a young life trying to make it. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

Do you have issues with your parents? If so, you're normal. As a therapist, family therapist, and life coach I know that many, if not most, people in their twenties, thirties, and forties are still working through different aspects of their relationships with their parents. This doesn't mean rehashing the past, but rather letting go of old baggage so that you can move forward into the life you design. Though this work can be challenging, it can also be absolutely necessary for you to re-define your relationships with your family of origin as you grow into your happiest, healthiest, "best self." Understanding how you relate/d to your family can also be profoundly important to understanding how you relate to your spouse and children. Sometimes, this work involves healing, and forgiving your parents for things that happened in the past. You may need to learn how to establish healthy adult relationships with your parents, as you create your own family. Or, you might need to set new boundaries with your parents, and release the responsibility and guilt your're carrying. It's a lot, and for many this type of work can feel very "big" and overwhelming. So on this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast, I'm going to be talking you through some really common "parent problems" that adults face, and give you some tips for how to resolve them successfully. This episode might be helpful to you if you have: Critical parents, judgmental parents or (shiver) narcissistic parents. Intrusive parents, controlling parents, or generous parents who give gifts with strings attached. Parents who are a mess, and emotionally or financially dependent on you. Unfinished emotional business with parents who have disappointed you, or hurt you. Yes, these are deep topics, but ones I know that so many of you can relate to. I hope that the advice I share here can help you to not just create healthier and happier relationships with your parents, but can launch you on your own empowering journey of healing and growth. May peace be with you, Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby www.growingself.com

The holidays are upon us! Time for turkey, presents, and LOTS of time with your family. The counseling and coaching sessions I'm having with my Denver clients recently have focused on how to handle "family time."  The truth is that everyone wants to have a happy holiday with their family. It's also true that many people look forward to time with their parents with a mixture of excitement... and apprehension. Particularly during the holidays, with all the forced together-time, it's easy for tensions to flare and wreck a nice day pretty fast. So today I'm re-issuing the "How to Deal With Difficult Parents" edition of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast, in order to remind you of the mindset to cultivate in order to genuinely appreciate your parents for who they are, and have a good time together. I hope these ideas help you have a happy holiday. And Happy Thanksgiving! xo, Lisa ====================================================== Do your parents make you crazy? You're not alone! Even as adults, our parents can have a unique ability to trigger familiar old frustrations, hurts and resentments. Or maybe they're just annoying. Maybe, as in my own case, you're still a little upset with your mother for not being Hillary Clinton. On this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast I talk about how to deal with your parents, as an adult. Listen, and learn why you get so triggered by your parents, and the steps to create a healthy, peaceful and reality-based relationship with the parents you have. We'll talk about the stages that we all move through on the path of "individuation" including disillusionment, distance, healing / growing, and reclaiming. You'll learn how to shift from being a child in relation to your parents, to an adult. Finally, you'll learn how to appreciate your parents for who they are, forgive past mistakes, set healthy boundaries, and start actually enjoying your relationship with them. Listen now....
