She directs the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiary, the Gifted Development Center (GDC) in Denver, Colorado, which has assessed over 6,500 children in the last 40 years. This is the largest data base on the gifted population. She and her colleagues at GDC have developed 40 instruments. For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver (DU), in Counseling Psychology and Gifted Education. She developed a course on Assessment of the Gifted at DU, which was also a short course taught abroad. She has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books, including the textbook, Counseling the Gifted and Talented, adopted at 50 colleges. Her latest book, Giftedness 101 (Springer, 2013), contains a chapter on assessment. There are many reasons but Ginger boils it down to the messages we hear as kids and feeling a lack of safety, dignity and/or belonging. It's not just “you did it”, it's “we are experiencing this and this is not good for any of us in our community, this isn't about you just cleaning up what you did wrong”. It's all of us.

Singapore's Gifted Education Programme (GEP) in primary schools is set to be overhauled to become more inclusive. This was announced during Lawrence Wong's maiden National Day Rally speech. The school-based programmes for higher-ability learners, which now cater to 7 per cent of each cohort, will expand to take in 10 per cent, or 3,000 students a year.  There'll also be after-school supplementary modules aimed at further developing students in their areas of strength and interest, that are not intended to replace regular curriculum. These are part of a series of changes to the 40-year-old GEP. She continues to keep learning in the area of Special Education in helping provide services to our population with the abilities to thrive even with a diagnosis or label. Throughout her years of being in the public education system, Mercedes was well aware of the deficit in honest and open communication between the schools and the families. She wanted ALL children to have the equitable education that they have a legal right to have, but often failed at receiving due to the system... They discuss how these differences can often be mistaken for attention issues or social difficulties, and what it all means for everyday life. Dr. De Bonte shares some methodologies used for testing, accommodations that are available, and ground-breaking auditory therapies that have been found to help those dealing with auditory processing challenges. Takeaways Auditory processing differences can have a significant impact on how individuals experience the world and react to various situations. Processing differences can often mimic other traits, such as attention issues or difficulties with social relationships. Individuals with auditory processing differences may try to hide or compensate for their difficulties, which can be exhausting and impact their well-being. The Abled Kids Foundation specializes in auditory processing disorder and offers unique approaches to assessment and support. An ear filter device can improve word recognition by altering the timing between the ears. Low gain hearing aids and auditory therapies may provide some benefit, but their effectiveness is uncertain. Misophonia, a sensitivity to certain sounds, does not have many effective strategies for treatment. Accommodations such as preferential seating and FM systems in classrooms can help individuals with auditory processing differences. She directs the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiary, the Gifted Development Center (GDC) in Denver, Colorado, which has assessed over 6,500 children in the last 40 years. This is the largest data base on the gifted population. She and her colleagues at GDC have developed 40 instruments. For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver (DU), in Counseling Psychology and Gifted Education. She developed a course on Assessment of the Gifted at DU, which was also a short course taught abroad. She has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books, including the textbook, Counseling the Gifted and Talented, adopted at 50 colleges. Her latest book, Giftedness 101 (Springer, 2013), contains a chapter on assessment. A new organisation to support neurodiverse Kiwis has been created to lobby for a more responsive education system that meets the needs of neurodiverse people. The Neurodiversity in Education Coalition is founded by the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand, ADHD New Zealand, Autism New Zealand and the Centre for Gifted Education. They say the education system is failing to meet the learning needs of neurodiverse students, who have had to struggle to get the support they need. And without proper support, they report that neurodiverse people are strikingly over-represented amongst those disengaged from school, the unemployed, offenders in the justice and prison system, and people with poor mental health. The coalition met with parliamentarians yesterday to gather support, accompanied by a group of "champions" - young people who shared their personal experiences of being neurodiverse. Kathryn speaks to one of these champions, Jas Mcintosh, and Justine Munro, the chief executive of the New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education who is the leading charge behind the Neurodiversity in Education Coalition.
