This week I am coming to you with a solo episode. Things have been quite interesting these last several months and as we enter into a new quarter, a new season, I wanted to revisit the topics of fear and worry.  Despite what is going on outside, despite our current employment statuses and despite the hardships, we still have to keep pressing on. We still have to be giving even when we are in a time of famine. We have to remember that fear is a result of failing to submit to God. It is a result of our unbelief.  We must learn to trust more and worry less. This is the only way that we can increase our piece and stand in prime position to accept the blessings that are waiting for us on the other side of that door. It's not easy and I struggle with the concept of "what is for you, will be for you" ever day. As many of us continue to face unemployment and receive rejection after rejection. Know that the right opportunity will come your way, you just have to trust more and worry less.  Don't forget to subscribe rate and review the podcast! Women of color are seen as the backbone of the community, and we are. We are the backbones of our community. We are the voice. When they kill our men, we are the ones who speak up, while still holding it together to care for children and our community. We have to be the voice for ourselves. Women are victims of police brutality too. We are being murdered by the hands of law enforcement and this is not ok. On this episode, I air out my frustrations, while urging our sisters to find their voice. Those who can speak, speak, those who cannot there are other ways to let your voices be heard.  We cannot be silent. We need to continue the fight for justice. We need to continue saying the names of the countless women who have lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement. In all my efforts do my job and do it well, I forgot to pick up a mentor in my new field of law. I think before, because the work was somewhat routine (as litigation and arbitration can often be) I didn't feel the need top find a mentor. But now I am not litigating. It's a totally different role. I literally had an"aha!" moment in the shower and it all makes a little more sense now. I am without guidance and I need to get some guidance ASAP Rocky! The great Aaliyah once said "dust yourself off and try again". Now I am pretty sure when Aaliyah said this phrase in her song Try Again, she was likely talking about love and relationships. But even so, I think that she was spot on. This week I am talking about the art of trying. I reacquainted myself with the phrase "if at first you don't succeed try try again". I think as professional women of color, we are so wrapped up in public opinion and perception. We are afraid to try new things out of fear of being perceived as someone who is "all over the place", "wishy washy". There is a difference between being a hot mess and  being someone ins pursuit of greatness. Some of us came out of the womb knowing what we wanted to be in life. Purposed from birth. Others, such as myself, are still trying to figure out where we fit in. However, in order to figure it out, you have to try new things. You have to be open minded and you have to be ok with the F- word, FAILURE.  Failure is a part of life. No one likes it. I sure don't. In fact, I hate it. But it is part of the process. Tune in as I talk about the importance of trying and how "living up to standards" is ruining our lives.  *FREEda's World is available everywhere you enjoy your podcasts. December 4th a Queen was born. It's me, I am the Queen lol. I thank God for allowing me to see another year. There are so many  people who do not have this opportunity and for this I am grateful.  I am a BIG birthday person. My love for birthdays is a result of spending many birthdays alone. Often times my birthday was forgotten and I would bake my own cake and sing happy birthday to myself.  As soon as I became of age, I began celebrating my birthday every year to the fullest extent of my pockets.   However, ironically enough. As excited as I was/am for my bday, I begin to feel withdrawn, sad and defeated I’m the days leading up. Why? I can only attribute this to some form of birthday blues. In my conversations with random friends and acquaintances, I have come to find that this birthday blues thing is a real thing. It’s not just me (thank God). Often times, we as professional working women of color are so caught up in the here and now that we forget to dream. We do not make time for imagination. We do not dare greatly because we have convinced ourselves that it is silly envision.  Ruth is a professional working woman out here in these streets. Like Ruth, you too can create. You too can be a visionary, and with hard work and determination, your vision can become a reality. Challenge for the week: Take some time today to imagine. If you could be anything what would you be? If you could do anything, what would you do? Then, sit back and think about what’s keeping you from from reaching those goals. Emotions can take you from zero to 100 real quick. Emotions are a necessary part of life because they help us communicate with one another. But when emotions go unchecked, when we let them get out of control, they can be the cause of our downfall. I think I’m certainly showing my age by the title of this week’s episode but En Vogue certainly was on to something. On today’s episode I talk about non-conformity and how it is ok to go against the grain. For those of us in our thirties and beyond, it is so easy to find ourselves doing things that we honestly don’t want to do, or engaging in things we can careless about.  This can be anything from accepting a role at work that everyone thinks you should accept but you yourself know that it isn’t the right move for you. It can be succumbing to societal pressures of marriage and children when all you truly want to do is focus on your career. It can also be intentionally dimming your light in the workplace, because the culture dictates that you keep  your head down and stay under the radar.  In order for we as women of color to truly develop into the individuals we were meant to become, we have to resist the urge to conform. We have to free our minds from the noise of friends, family society and really dig in to ourselves to determine what it is that we truly want. If what you want goes against the grain, then so be it. Take a stance. Be comfortable with your stance  and live your life in the way that is best suited for you and your circumstances. That picture of you at the beach smiling tells people that you are living it up. Meanwhile you are dying inside. You never know who is watching and listening.
