After mixing in the deeper, darker spaces – searching for a moodier, winter sound – @Freeda-Sol is ready to emerge and lift her face to the sun. While it's hard work to keep the mood light in times like these, Freeda accepted the challenge and brought a mix that grooves and delights from start to finish while bringing a balance into the equation that keeps it from being overly sanguine. This mix kicks off with Benny Bridges and Justin Jay's Fantasic Edit of “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones, finds its funky flavor with tracks like Mikey Lion's “Your Bad Self,” adds some acid icing toward the end with Darco's 2024 tack, “Vete” and brings it home with that “Real Love” remix cooked up by Drizabone and remixed by Jelsen. We've all heard of “growth mindsets,” but what does it really mean? Here's a definition: A belief that intelligence, abilities, and talents can be developed through effort, hard work and guidance from others. I first heard about it in the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, a Stanford professor who coined the term back in 2006. In her research, she found the growth mindset was the #1 predictor of long-term success. Now you might think, well duh, of course people believe they can improve themselves. Ahhh, but that's actually NOT the case. Many people believe for many different reasons, they can't improve. Look at the current conditions in the wedding industry. It's tough out there, and will be for a while. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the down market is an explanation for why it's harder to fill your calendar, but it's not an excuse. Someone with a growth mindset sees the challenge in today's industry and wonders, how will I adapt to the new environment in order to achieve my goals. The opposite is a fixed mindset. They see the exact same scenario, and think, well crap, I hope things get better soon so I can fill my calendar or raise my prices. Today, I bring on to the podcast one of my dearest friends in the wedding world, Anja Winikka, former right hand to the founder of The Knot, industry innovator, and CEO of Freeda, a new kind of community for established wedding pros who want genuine community with other wedding pros. I always feel better about the world when I hear what Anja has to say about things. I know you will too.
For the final show of the year, the best episode of Sol Kissed Sessions from 2024 was selected. The choice was not easy, but this one is a true celebration of life. Happy Holidays everyone. It's been said that art imitates life and music is the shorthand of emotion. In this episode of Sol Kissed Sessions, @Freeda-Sol takes you on an emotional journey that explores the full spectrum of feelings – from love, joy and tenderness to powerlessness, harshness and frustration – that we encounter through our existence in such a complex and wondrous world. This emotional rollercoaster chugs off with Greg Kora's “Burn For You,” then gently accelerates towards its apex with Madota's “Gilli” and speeds through chaos and light toward its reassuring conclusion with a not-so-gentle reminder that everything is going to be alright bought to you by Dennis Cruz's “Ready for the Blues.” Hear more: @Freeda-Sol Shout out to her collectives: @Antonym_HQ (Liverpool, UK) @famaorlando (Orlando, Fl) @queens-of-noise (Orlando, FL) ⚡️Like the Show? Cozy up to a ringside seat for a behind-the-scenes tour of the wildest shows in sports entertainment, during our insightful chat about the still photos produced for World Wrestling Entertainment, (otherwise known as WWE). In 2023 alone, the WWE photo team traveled the globe, covering close to 170 live events, and producing 2.6 million stills to serve the organization's various platforms. You might—incorrectly—assume that WWE's still images are generated from video screengrabs. Well, this couldn't be further from the truth. In this week's podcast, we get the full scoop about stills from WWE's Vice President of photography, Brad Smith, and Senior Director of photography, Rich Freeda. Among the many details we unpack: The learning curve required for shooting a WWE event, the importance of showing all aspects of the spectacle in pictures, and the delicate dance between still photographers and TV camerapeople, who are tethered together and both wearing headphones while capturing a show. In addition to live event coverage, the photo team creates high-level studio portraits of WWE Superstars, which necessitates complex studio set ups at each venue. Given the relentless schedule of three live shows weekly, two of which are traveling, studio gear is circling the country all year long. As Rich Freeda puts it, “We could be a Consumer Reports testing lab.” And when it comes to the type of photographers best suited to covering WWE shows, Brad Smith sums things up nicely. “[At first,] I instinctively thought, if we're going to hire new people, they have to be sports photographers. And now I don't think that at all. I'll tell you who I'd rather have. I'd rather have a photographer who's a tour photographer for Bon Jovi than somebody who's the Yankee's photographer, because they understand that event is the important thing.” Psych yourself up for WrestleMania 40 with our WWE episode from the B&H Photography Podcast! Kathryn interviews Author Nadine Haruni. How do you explain to a child that Mom and Dad will no longer live together? Dealing with divorce can be very confusing and challenging for children. Nadine Haruni presents a story to assist families adjusting to a new family dynamic and the often overwhelming feelings that surround it. Owing to the fact that approximately 50% of marriages end in divorce, it is helpful to have a children's book that explains what divorce is in a simple way. It also engenders empathy in kids whose parents are not divorced to better understand what their friends are going through. In this first book of her Freeda the Frog series the story centers on young Frannie and Frank and their parents, Freeda and Fred, who inevitably go through a divorce. They learn that both parents will still love them even if they don't live together. The little tadpoles also discover that they are not alone and that tadpoles at school also have divorced parents. Haruni is an award-winning children's book author. Along with writing and parenting she is a practicing attorney and a certified yoga instructor.Kathryn also interviews Author Francesca T. Royster PhD. As a multiracial household in Chicago's North Side community of Rogers Park, race is at the core of Francesca T. Royster and her family's world, influencing everyday acts of parenting and the conception of what family truly means. Focusing on a unit of three: the author; her wife Annie, who's white; and Cecilia, the black daughter they adopt as a couple in their forties and fifties. Royster chronicles this journey to motherhood while examining the messiness and complexity of adoption and parenthood from a black, queer, and feminist perspective. She interweaves her experiences and memories with queer and gender theory to argue that many Black families, certainly her own, have historically had a “queer” attitude toward family: configurations that sit outside the white normative experience and are the richer for their flexibility and generosity of spirit. She is a professor of English literature at DePaul University in Chicago, where she teaches classes on African American literature and culture, Shakespeare, and gender and queer theory.

Freeda Cathcart who is the Mothers Out Front Team Coordinator. We talk all about the Manchin Bill which is proposed by Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Joe Manchin. It's a bill with an outline of tax, climate, energy, and healthcare measures that speeds up fossil fuel and clean energy projects. In the episode we will focus on its effects on the Mountain Valley Pipeline, MVP. Manchin's bill includes a mandate for agencies to approve the contentious Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline project. Many Virginia communities have revolted against the venture. The pipeline, proposed will run through West Virginia, Virginia and a sliver of North Carolina, has had multiple permits repeatedly struck down since it was initially approved in 2017. It is now expected to cost more than $6 billion to complete, more than double the original cost estimate. The Manchin bill would move the legal venue for challenges to Mountain Valley from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond to the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Columbia Circuit. The bill text also includes a provision imposing a two-year deadline on permitting reviews for major projects under NEPA, and one year for projects with less impact. With Freeda we talk about the work she does, the bill, the effects it has on the MVP, how the MVP effects communities and energy permitting provisions.
