Native New Yorker, comedian, and host of the No Thanks, We're Good podcast, Chris Barnes joins the pod this week. Right away, the boys dive into nightmare New York City apartment stories—landlords barging in, firefighters breaking down the door, cockroaches, and more. Chris talks about what it's like being a New York Jets fan and how he left sports behind when he started comedy. The boys also get into why being a comedian can feel like going to social jail. They talk skincare routines and whether looks help—or hurt—in comedy. Some great Patreon questions this week, including: does Chris feel like sketches help him explore areas that stand-up restricts? I am delighted to have Michelle Shapiro joining me on the show today. She is a Native New Yorker and an integrative and functional registered dietitian who has worked with thousands of clients, holistically reducing anxiety, healing longstanding gut health issues, and lovingly approaching weight problems. In our conversation today, we explore shame and eating behaviors, looking at self-empathy and the inner dialogue that usually accompanies weight-loss resistance. We examine whether or not obesity is a disease and the effects of adverse childhood experiences and dive into fasting, hormesis, autoimmunity, and the concept of surrender. We also clarify what intuitive eating involves, the role of highly sensitive bodies, and some common causes of digestive distress and bloating. Michelle brings a wealth of knowledge to today's insightful and engaging discussion. I know you will love it! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why kindness and sensitivity matter when it comes to discussing the sensitive topic of weight Why clinicians should view obesity as a symptom of underlying metabolic issues rather than a disease How internal dialogue and protection mechanisms influence people's food choices How adverse childhood events and high-pressure social environments can increase the risk of eating disorders How food allergies and fear can lead to disordered relationships with food Why safety is the key to hormone regulation Is intermittent fasting a dangerous practice? The benefits of practices like grounding, Reiki, and acupuncture for overcoming anxiety and feeling safe in the body The importance of self-reliance in healing, and the role of practitioners in guiding their clients toward self-awareness What you need to focus on when implementing intuitive eating The unique challenges that highly sensitive people are likely to face Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website Submit your questions to support@cynthiathurlow.com Connect with Michelle Shapiro On her website Quiet the Diet Podcast The Highly Sensitive Body Hub

Native New Yorker, turned Coloradan, and author of “Trust yourself to be All in,” Amanda McCoy Flanagan opens up about how Grief from her brothers' death saved her marriage, after almost ruining it. Amanda, who had been in talk therapy for years and maintained her sobriety, shares how a string of family deaths made her question a lot about her life, including her marriage. Five months after her brothers' death she told her husband she didn't love him anymore. The steps they both decided to take pushed them to finally face the grief they had both been avoiding. This courage led to their individual healing, and eventually, the restoration of their relationship. I think you'll really connect with Amanda's no-nonsense approach and heartfelt honesty as she explores the fear of truly facing our grief. She addresses worries like the belief that we might only ever know pain or that we might not spiral back up, if we do. Join us as we combine the North and the South, in a candid conversation about life, loss and coming out on the other side. Enjoy! We were honoured to have legendary DJ Ken Dashow (Q104.3 FM in New York) join us for Episode 231! If you are in or from the NYC area and a Beatles fan you will know this voice by heart! Ken has been on the air in NYC since 1982. He began his career in earnest starting out at WNEW 102.7 (Where Rock "Lived") and has been at Q104.3 (iHeartMedia) since 1997. Jodie Patterson sees herself as a Starfish - she has the ability to stretch far and wide and reach people as she does so. At 53, she has perfected the art through many careers, self-grown businesses, 5 children (currently spanning 30 - 14 years of age), volunteer work, art and a vibrant life of travel and friendships. Jodie is a Native New Yorker who grew up on the Upper West Side in a creative neighbourhood and an actively Black family. She comes from a long line of activists and entrepreneurs and continues this lineage with many successes along the way, clearly drawn towards women with strong voices who inspire, she embodies these qualities too. 'The Bold World' is one of the most striking and memorable books I have ever read. I cried, I laughed, I resonated and learned. It is Jodie's story of her life so far and the transformation of her family both immediate and extended. When her son, Penelope, came to her aged 2 and said, "Mama, I'm not a girl. I am a boy." it blew her world wide open. In this book, she shares just how. I am not letting go of my own copy but I am giving it out to everyone I know and you should too. This episode is not all about Menopause. It is about identity, creativity, community, freedom, curiosity, transition and transformation and how all of it is an inside job, "We can be who we are from the inside out." You can find Jodie on IG @jodiepatterson and https://jodiepatterson.com and you can find "The Bold World" wherever you choose to get your books. If you are in the UK, you may have to be a little more patient for it to arrive but it is well worth the wait :-)

No Risk, No Reward. That axiom remains true in business and life but for John Doran, the risk was especially great considering he was walking away from a stable teaching career, tenure, benefits and a six-figure salary - with two kids. The Native New Yorker and Owner of Plugin Station Online (PISO) not only took the leap, but now runs one of the most successful EV Charging Station installation companies in the Northeast and will share his knowledge at this year's EV Charging Summit. Doran talks about starting out when there were next to no EVs on the road, the challenge of going from teaching to being an entrepreneur and how the EV market has changed rapidly in the last few years and why PISO is positioned to scale - strategically - while still employing the best service in the industry. It's a wonderful story of dedication and perseverance. For more on J0hn Doran and PISO. Actor PETER FLIHAN is our guest on this episode! We talk with him about his acting career and of course his latest appearances on two New York TV shows: East NY and Blue Bloods!New York City born and bred, Peter Flihan got his first taste of acting as the “M” in “Merry Christmas” in the kindergarten play. But it was behind, and later on, the stage with Fordham University's “Mimes & Mummers” in the Bronx where he got really hooked. It would only take 13 years and 2 prior careers as a foreign exchange broker and then a sales manager for a teddy bear company to finally allow him to become a working commercial actor. With typical perfect timing, he started his pursuit right before the SAG and AFTRA strike in the Spring of 2000. But with the incredible support of his wife and children, a difficult start became a rewarding journey that continues over 20 years later. His scope of work has grown over that time to include healthy aspects of voiceover, film, and television roles. As a dedicated community firefighter since 2003, Peter has attained the rank of Captain in a Ladder Company, and is the current President of that Company. An active freemason, Peter seeks a sense of shared purpose in every family he enjoys being a part, especially the creative one of acting. Here is the link to see Peter's scenes on East New York! Are you ready for Season 2 of Gossip Girl on Dec. 1st?!? I hope you everyone enjoyed the thanksgiving festivities, because I have one more juicy dish to bring to the table on this New York Sunday. In giving my thanks, I'm grateful Gossip Girl existed, inspiring the Gossipnista podcast to be born, then bringing GG 2.0 to life in a bigger & bolder way, ultimately leading me to my run-in & interview with the talented & fun actor, Johnathan Fernandez, who plays Nick Lott, a series regular on the New Gossip Girl. So the questions are…..has dad Nick Lott gone bad boy in the upcoming season of GG? And, do him & Zoya end up caught up in the glitz & glamour of Manhattan losing their bond along the way? Oh, and where does that unassuming relationship between Nick Lott and Ms. Kate Keller go? Rumor has it, it's all or nothing. Sparks will fly as Georgina light's up the second season and Monet de Haan had better watch out thinking she can be Queen B. The sisterly love/hate relationship between Zoya & Julien continues as does the ménage à trois with Max, Aki, and Audrey. So much to cover and so little time! You'll have to tune into my podcast interview with Johnathan to get the scoop on some of these topics, plus get a behind the scenes story of the GG cast members living in the city. Johnathan will of course, share his relationship with New York and his perspective as a native, as well as dive into his acting career. And might there be another O.G. cast member making any appearance this upcoming season - I'll never tell! Enjoy the interview. Xoxo,Gossipnista
This weeks guest is, Shiloh Frederick, creator of @shilohinthecity a resource for exploring NYC in a different way (off the beaten path with a New Yorker who's rediscovering her city and takes everyone along for the ride). Shiloh shares fun history lessons and facts from all the city boroughs (not just Manhattan) and she also makes it so interesting and inviting. In our lighthearted, yet very informative conversation, Shiloh drops so much insight on NYC, plus 2-3 things to do in each borough. She mentions the attraction that brought her to tears and shares why Staten Island is often forgotten. She'll also get into food places to explore, facts about NYC you may not want to hear, and her number one tip to Native New Yorkers and those looking to call NYC home. It's been a 3 years in the making to have the honor to interview Shiloh and I hope you enjoy our conversation. Be sure to reach out if you have any questions. This episode is a must listen if you ever wondered how New York City apartments work (outside the regular market) and how you can lock yourself into the city and an apartment forever, if you choose to. Realities of NYC Parenting - all packed into one conversation, which includes an unbelievable Upper East Side story! On today's episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bethany Braun-Silva, who I feel I've hit the New York City Lottery of guests, to represent raising New Yorkers in so many ways than one. You'll have to tune in to the episode to hear them all. “Bethany Braun-Silva is an on-air parenting, entertainment, and lifestyle expert. She is the former editor of Parenting.com and frequently writes about the latest and greatest gear for parents and kids in the city. She was previously the Senior Editor of Big Apple Parent Magazine and has written for OK! Magazine, Hollywood Life, Mom.com, and CafeMom. She is a graduate of New York University, but her proudest accomplishment is being a mom to Elias and Jake, who make life (and work) endlessly fun”. During our conversation Bethany notes how her first born birthed her career as a parenting expert as well as nostalgia of watching her children loving the same things she did growing up as a child in the city. Bethany's energy and through-and-through native New Yorker personality, which she wears like a badge of honor, shines throughout our interview. She also brings a very realistic perspective on raising children in the city, plus what she likes and dislikes about New York City for kids; how the school system in NYC is bound to be the biggest barrier for city parents; why Times Square is not popular among New Yorkers; how you must live 20+ years in the city to consider yourself a New Yorker, and when I say so much more…I mean so much more! In this episode, I speak with Cyril, a native New Yorker and a second generation Chinese-American, who grew up in Brooklyn and lives in Queens about his perspective of New York City.
Native New Yorker, comedian and TV writer Gus Constantellis has very little faith in our protagonist's ability to survive, but is he hot? Gus asks the burning questions of our cowardly hero who has been hiding in an abandoned building from the Martians.
