(13:54) Steven explains that one useful strategy in business is to read and understand what other people who are ahead of you have to say about the industry's situation. (15:50) Steven believes that having a business plan is essential for people to be aligned with their goals and broaden core values for the business. (22:20) Steven mentions that nothing you do in real estate as an investor will be as scary, risky, or adventurous as what you're already doing. (28:45) Steven explains that the investment of time varies depending on the type of niche you are in. (30:27) Steven discusses that LLC provides liability protection, and he has all of his rentals in LLCs in order to give multiple layers of protection and anonymity. (34:35) Steven mentions always considering the area, interest rates, taxes, and insurance when investing in a real estate property. (36:06) Steven explains that he does not often learn from people blogging about real estate, but rather through real relationships within his local community. (42:05) Steven advises listeners to always be prepared and to have a remedy to every challenging situation they may face in their investments. (45:05) Key Quotes: "Having a broad kind of core value, the thing that gets lost in capitalistic pursuits, and I'm an avid capitalist, is quality of life. And so, I always try to balance my desire to be a goal-setting person with, are these things actually going to make my life better?" - Steven Wylie "Everyone's got a different threshold. And that's going to be a very personal question that each person can only answer for themselves because what's true for me and what's true for you will be two different things. Everybody has a different capacity for risk." - Steven Wylie "My posture is ready to find distressed situations and end up being the remedy to that situation. And for myself, be ready to hang on to some things for a while and let them ride and just love them.” - Steven Wylie Resources Mentioned: Steven Wylie Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young

In this throwback episode of Get a Load of This podcast, Join hosts Cameron Pechia, and Thomas Comstock in this episode of Get a Load of This podcast, as they discuss an owner/operator success story with Justin Robbins of 3 Peaks Logistics LLC. They discuss the process of starting a new company as well as how one can be profitable and change their lives within a year. Episode Highlights: Justin discusses his background and how he got into the trucking business. (2:36) Justin shares a few of the struggles he had as when he was younger, before getting his CDL. (22:59) According to Justin, one of the mistakes many drivers make is staying in an area to wait for a load that simply pays for their way back while missing out on several days of revenue in a hot zone. (25:15) Justin believes one thing he always encourages drivers to do is to adapt to their location and find out what product is moving from where they are. (26:58) Justin explains that any failures or setbacks he experiences just turn into motivation. (28:53) Justin explains how, like him, when someone begins a business as an owner-operator, they are generally in the red the first year (33:02) Justin explains why he registered 3 Peaks Logistics as an LLC and why business cards registered as an LLC should not be mixed with personal expenses. (33:59) Justin recommends that new drivers communicate with other drivers since they could learn something useful from the discussion. (37:57) Justin recommends a good tax company and a drug program to new owner-operators. (44:32) Justin recommends the drivers to acquire their identification cards from as many places as possible. (56:15) Key Quotes: “One thing I always tell drivers, adapt to your location, find out what product is moving from where you're at, and what you're trying to do.” - Justin Robbins “I've been lucky enough to where every move I've made has been forward. I just got that mindset to where I'm not going to be stagnant and I refuse to take steps backwards.” - Justin Robbins “Don't go buy yourself a pair of shoes with your business card because once you start mixing your personal with your business, the LLC is out the window.” - Justin Robbins Resources Mentioned: 3 Peaks Logistics LLC Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance

We discuss the many incentives, including investment potential, control, and safety - and how to get started. Listen in to learn how captives have benefited trucking companies around the country! Episode Highlights: Ian talks about his academic and professional background and what led him to the trucking insurance industry. (3:55) Ian explains that Captive Resources works as a group captive that team ups with brokers around the country. (6:55) Ian discusses their type of market and talks about how important it is to have enough premiums and workers' compensation. (12:54) Ian explains that, over the years, they have realized that hauling trucks and restaurants are not always the best group setting and still vary for certain industries. (16:03) Ian shares that they created a mutual fund for all clients in the captive that allows them to invest their last funding portion. (23:53) Ian explains that a unique thing about captives is how they price the risk and have the option to take on control of premiums. (27:33) Ian discusses how captive members have benefited from the program during the pandemic. (31:25) Ian shares what type of client they are ideally looking for, safety wise. (41:33) Ian explains that they are very open to having conversations about getting captive ready and the steps that can be taken in the next several years to become a more suitable captive member. (44:30) Key Quotes: "This day and age in the umbrella market, it's sometimes hard to explain to clients and prospects what's going on, and how it is affecting their entire insurance program." - Ian Mayster "There is risk-sharing involved in the group captive here. But it's nice because that makes it true insurance, right? Otherwise, this would be self-insurance and you start to get into a whole different type of tax program structure." - Ian Mayster “It's often a lot more work upfront, but once they're in the captive, it's a pretty straightforward process. And we've got a lot of systems in place to make sure that they're happy, satisfied and serviced accordingly throughout their time in the program.” - Ian Mayster Resources Mentioned: Ian Mayster LinkedIn Captive Resources Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young

(37:41) Benjamin explains that the qualities he looks for in a client is someone who is not currently satisfied with their situation or who is satisfied but wants to grow, and who is prepared to do whatever it takes to get there. (45:32) Benjamin mentions that they are already in discussions about developing a second edition of their course tailored to trucking companies, particularly smaller owner-operators because they face many of the same difficulties. (48:24) Benjamin believes that greatness is defined by doing the tough thing every day, even when you don't feel like it. (49:50) Key Quotes: “The first two hours I spend with any client is mostly understanding as much as I can of how they arrived at where they're at right now. And I'll go back to even high school, college adolescent sports because I'm really big on analogies and using other situations to point out that oftentimes people have they actually have the answer to their own problem.” - Benjamin Kowalski “The biggest thing people struggle with is giving things to another person knowing they could do it better, and knowing the person they're training is going to make mistakes.” - Benjamin Kowalski “If you really want more time or need more time, you first have to get the things off your plate. Roger currently holds the position of Sr. Transportation Specialist for Travelers Insurance and he is based in the Hartford Field office. He comes to Travelers with over thirty-five years of experience in the transportation field, specializing in regulated fleets.  He started out loading trucks in his early twenties and gradually progressed up through the ranks until his last position, prior to coming to Travelers, was Director of Training for a national trucking company. He was directly responsible for administering the training program for over 1800 drivers nationwide. Over the course of his career, he has driven tractor-trailers, taught CDL, managed fleets of trucks, served as DOT Compliance/Safety Director, served as a consultant to several large trucking firms, and has conducted numerous accident investigations (including several fatalities). In addition, over the course of his career, he has been the systems administrator of several different Telematics/Vehicle Video systems. He became adept at using the systems to positively influence driver behaviors and decision-making through offering drivers timely feedback, as well as remedial counseling. Roger still holds a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Hazardous Materials Endorsement and he has found this to be very helpful when dealing with drivers. The fact that he can still drive a truck earns him a level of respect with drivers that they do not offer up so easily. Episode Highlights: Roger shares his experience in the transportation and trucking industry, including 30 years of working in trucking before transitioning to insurance. (4:37) Roger discusses his unique perspective on staying connected with his family while on the road and how his blunt approach benefits his work in the trucking industry. (22:19) Cameron mentions that it is important for truck drivers to prioritize safety and take proactive measures to protect themselves in case of incidents or accidents. (30:10) Roger explains that it is crucial to consider the driver's character and behavior when entrusting them with your equipment, as human error accounts for the majority of crashes, and the potential consequences of neglecting this aspect. (39:51) Roger discusses the challenges faced by truck drivers including parking issues, delays caused by shippers and receivers, law enforcement hostility, rising costs of diesel, brakes, and tires, difficulty finding good mechanics, and the additional paperwork and documentation required after driving. In this episode of Get a Load of This podcast. Cameron Pechia - Owner of Valley Trucking Insurance has a great conversation with Doug Marcello, Trucking Defense Attorney - Chief Legal Officer of Bluewire.  Cameron and Doug talk about the different legal environments across the country. They also talk about highly effective ways that trucking companies can be proactive with their processes and procedures to make them more defendable in court. They also discuss how AI technology is being used by BlueWire.Ai and helping trucking companies, freight brokers, Shippers, and other transportation professionals. This is definitely a tool you will want to check out.  You can learn more at www.BlueWire.Ai or find Doug Marcello on LinkedIn and connect to learn more. Episode Highlights: Doug shares that he is a trucking defense attorney with CDL and special admission in 35 states, involved with BlueWire, a technology company analyzing trucking company data to determine potential exposure to nuclear verdicts and providing proactive evaluation and protection strategies. (2:57) Doug explains that preparing for accidents and lawsuits in the trucking industry by analyzing and monitoring data, addressing driver deficiencies, and constantly reviewing manuals can prevent systemic failures that can lead to costly verdicts. (7:06) Doug discusses the importance of taking action during the "dark period" after an accident, including obtaining a letter of recommendation, pushing back against the opposition, and conducting surveillance to ensure the plaintiff's claims are legitimate. (18:46) Doug mentions that the federal government is developing a beyond-compliance program for trucking companies to showcase their commitment to safety and investment in order to defend themselves against negative perceptions and legal actions. (25:06) Doug explains that BlueWire is a proactive solution used by insurance companies to monitor trucking companies and address issues before renewal, aligning their story with their actual practices. (27:20) Doug discusses his approach to not sounding like a lawyer and keeping his content conversational and concise. (29:46) Key Quotes: “The regrettable reality is there'll be accidents, and there'll be lawsuits regardless of who's at fault. So what we have to do is to prepare for them, just like we prepare for earthquakes or some other natural disaster, because, you know, we can't accurately predict the earthquake, we can't accurately predict a hurricane, let's say, less beyond seven or eight days. But what we need to do is prepare for it, harden our targets, and make sure we're always vigilant and prepared so that when that comes, we can withstand it.” - Doug Marcello “The great thing about the cameras is they give us the exoneration that we don't have otherwise on it. More companies now were going to side view cameras for the lane changes, or even rear cameras on this. So, I think that's a big thing that we have right there.” - Doug Marcello “While people can look askew at corporations and try to demean them, the folks that you and I know, the family operations that many of these are, they're the folks who get up in the morning and do the work. They're the ones who create the jobs. They're the ones who support the community, be it Little League or other charities.” - Doug Marcello Resources Mentioned: Doug Marcello LinkedIn Bluewire Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance

And then when you grow to five, you've got options that a five-unit account once, and then when you get to a fleet of 10 trucks or more, they can give you a reporting policy, and then you can grow into a self-insured, and then you can become a captive member. ” - Mandy Graham Resources Mentioned: Mandy Graham LinkedIn Great West Casualty Company Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance

In this episode of Get a Load of This podcast, join hosts Cameron and Thomas as they discuss a solution to driver staffing shortages with the CEO of F|STAFF, Justin Clarke. Learn about the benefits both motor carriers and drivers can expect with utilizing F|STAFF's driver on-demand platform. Episode Highlights: Justin explains what F|STAFF is, how it has evolved, and how the platform is designed to benefit both carriers and drivers. (5:03) Justin discusses F|STAFF's initial growth journey from 2007 to 2009, which has now helped over 10,000 drivers find work. (11:05) Justin explains their hiring process and criteria for finding and hiring qualified drivers. (13:54) Justin explains that with F|STAFF on demand drivers can pick the work they want, adjust their schedule, and check out market prospects and carriers. (16:29) Justin explains that F|STAFF is a staffing service for carriers who have their own trucks and need an extra driver for a specific period of time and that drivers get a W2 and a regular income while working with F|STAFF. (18:09) Justin mentions that F|STAFF believes truckers drive everything and that all of their systems are focused on the truck driver to best meet their needs. (24:54) Justin explains that what F|STAFF is developing for the future will allow drivers to reclaim their freedom which they deserve because they work and sacrifice so much. (29:06) Justin shares the most significant change he has seen in the trucking industry over the years. (39:11) Justin explains the need for life insurance for drivers and how F|STAFF takes that seriously. (48:32) Justin suggests that if he had a CB handle, it would be a trucker twin. (58:45) Key Quotes: “We're really excited. Over the last couple of years, we've been making a ton of headway towards providing what we call an on-demand model, and a tech-enabled approach to provide temporary on-demand truck drivers. But in a way, that's easier, right? You should be able to order drivers from your phone the same way you can order chapstick on Amazon if you need to.” - Justin Clarke “With the F|STAFF on-demand marketplace, drivers get to pick the jobs that they want, they can, you know, update their schedule, and really kind of look through the different jobs that are available in their market, and pick the ones that they're interested in. And so, carriers are really liking it too, because they don't have to hire full-time drivers always if they have more of a flexible type of business.” - Justin Clarke “What we're doing and providing for the future, I think, is going to allow again for drivers to actually get their freedom back, right? And the way that they actually deserve to have it because, you know, they do so much and they sacrifice so much.” - Justin Clarke Resources Mentioned: Justin Clarke LinkedIn F|STAFF Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance

Everybody has a different capacity for risk." - Steven Wylie "My posture is ready to find distressed situations and end up being the remedy to that situation. (6:11) Justin mentions what his CB handle would be if he had one. (17:11) Justin discusses the steps he took to ensure he had the resources to start his own business.

And we've got a lot of systems in place to make sure that they're happy, satisfied and serviced accordingly throughout their time in the program.” - Ian Mayster Resources Mentioned: Ian Mayster LinkedIn Captive Resources Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance | Captive

And that is a very difficult thing to do when somebody has become successful because they do everything themselves.” - Benjamin Kowalski Resources Mentioned: Benjamin Kowalski LinkedIn Freight360 Cameron Pechia Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance
