You enter your phone number, you get a pin number. Thank goodness. The day of username and passwords are gone, let's get rid of that.” - Andy Mathisen “You're only thinking of your insurance once or twice a year. How is AI being used at the edge, and what possibilities does this create for businesses? In this episode, host Bill Pfeifer sits down with the co-authors of the book AI at the Edge, Jenny Plunkett, Senior Developer Relations Engineer and Daniel Situnayake, Head of ML at Edge Impulse. They discuss how to determine which problems can actually be addressed through AI at the edge, how to think about effective AI, and unexpected use cases in generative AI and synthetic data generation. Plus, they cover how AI can support data distillation efforts and how to build teams that can successfully navigate this landscape. ---------Key Quotes:“We're going to be using generative AI to help us build a synthetic data set to train other AI models to deploy to edge devices.” - Jenny“One of the things that's really cool about synthetic data and using generative AI for that, is it potentially reduces the cost of training a model because instead of having to spend huge amounts of money labeling all this data, if you create the data yourself, you can have it implicitly be labeled.” - Dan --------Show Timestamps:(01:49) How did they get started in tech? You should be able to order drivers from your phone the same way you can order chapstick on Amazon if you need to.” - Justin Clarke “With the F|STAFF on-demand marketplace, drivers get to pick the jobs that they want, they can, you know, update their schedule, and really kind of look through the different jobs that are available in their market, and pick the ones that they're interested in. And so, carriers are really liking it too, because they don't have to hire full-time drivers always if they have more of a flexible type of business.” - Justin Clarke “What we're doing and providing for the future, I think, is going to allow again for drivers to actually get their freedom back, right? And the way that they actually deserve to have it because, you know, they do so much and they sacrifice so much.” - Justin Clarke Resources Mentioned: Justin Clarke LinkedIn F|STAFF Cameron Pechia Thomas Comstock Ryan Young Valley Trucking Insurance
Did you know that personal stories and gossip make up 65% of our conversations? Whether you like it or not, us humans think in narratives all day long - when we're buying things, when we're about to go into the office or get to the field, when we're spending time with friends or family or our spouse. We also get sucked in by other's stories. They MOVE us - to action, to tears, to anger… But, YOU have a story, too. Several of them, in fact… You've overcome PLENTY in your life… But how often are you tapping into YOUR stories to inspire you to action? They're free…you don't have to pay a motivational speaker or buy an app to get access to this inspiration. In today's 5-Minute Drill, I'm going to show you how to leverage the power of story to expand your possibilities. This is a strategy my clients LOVE, especially when we do alter ego work. STEP 3: Come up with an Origin Story that pulls positivity from your past and identifies the possibilities of your future. The goal here is a story that inspires you. [17:00 - 18:29] Wrapping Up! Darrin Schenck, VP of Sales and Marketing for TriageNow joins the podcast for a deep dive into nurse triage services. We learn what nurse triage services are, how they work, and why nurse triage is a necessary value-added service for all commercial independent insurance agents. Episode Highlights: Darrin mentions he's been with TriageNow since day one and has witnessed the company grow from an idea written on the back of a napkin to one of the top providers of telephonic nurse triage services in the nation. (5:56) Darrin explains that telephonic nurse triage services bridge the gap between businesses that can afford to have a doctor or nurse on-site and those that must send everyone to the clinic down the street. (7:14) Ryan shares that they utilize TriageNow for a few of their clients and that it was recommended to them by the Workers Comp Renegade, Mike McDonough. (9:10) Darrin explains how TriageNow functions when someone is injured. (14:12) Darrin believes that their total client base, regardless of industry, has a self-care rate of 42%. (23:35) Darrin mentions that some triage services provide programs that are ideal for smaller clients with 50 or fewer injuries per year. (31:49) Darrin explains that there is always a liability piece to the problem that must be considered and outsourcing that liability to a telephonic nurse triage service adds layers of protection between the employer and the problem if things go wrong. Episode Notes:In this episode Matt Trifiro interviews Kit Colbert, SVP and CTO at VMware. Kit started at VMware right out of college as an intern in 2003. He is responsible for ensuring VMware's long term technology leadership through research and innovation programs, with the primary goal of positively impacting and shaping the future of VMware, its ecosystem, and its customers. Kit talks about how his role as CTO at VMware isn't typical compared to his peers, and how he's both looking out for near term deliverables and ensuring the company has a viable future. He provides insight on what he has learned and how the company has adapted and progressed over the years, discussing everything from the future of connectivity and bandwidth to blockchain and the open grid alliance.--------Key Quotes:"We're trying to balance sort of two aspects. Number one, sort of our near term deliverables to help engineering accelerate and deliver these new products in new ways for us. And number two, also chartered with ensuring that we've got a viable future. And so we're looking at the different sorts of innovation, research, and things that are going to be paying the bills in maybe five to seven years.""It's basically a question of how do we as an industry build, deliver, and operate software. This is the challenge that we've been struggling with for the last few decades. And there's the sort of traditional model, which has been that you build it, then you test it, and then you ship it out to customers and they stand it up. I think the big shift that we're seeing is that people would prefer to get things as a service.""People are now looking for everywhere. And, I think the opportunity goes back a lot to the programming model. How can we make this as simple as possible for developers? Because I think the easier that you can make it, that's where you're going to win. People love simplicity, and that's one of the beauty of cloud; there's a tremendous amount of complexity, but that complexity is largely hidden most of the time."--------Timestamps:(02:00) Getting Started in Technology(05:10) Working at VMware(07:10) What does the CTO of VMware do?(07:40) What an Organization Values(08:40) Empowering Others(10:20) Ensuring a Viable Future(11:40) Existential Trends, Staying Ahead, and History of VMware(13:10) VMware Product Focus and Security Considerations(14:20) Focus of the office of CTO(15:30) Blockchain(17:50) Trends Driving Visualization and Multi-Cloud(23:21) Edge Opportunities(25:00) Open Grid Alliance(28:30) Modern Application Design(29:50) AI/ML Use Cases(31:39) VSan and Automation(35:05) Future of 6G and Networking(38:50) Architecture Opportunities and Integration (40:30) IoT and Considerations for Computing and Security(42:15) Edge and Multi-Cloud(45:00) Data Centers and Storage Locations(47:50) Email Signatures(54:10) Notion of Inclusion--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. Your employees are arguably the most important part of your business. Giving them a good employee experience means keeping up-to-date on important HR deadlines and notices, such as giving raises, as one example. Amy Frampton, Head of Marketing, BambooHR, wants to help both parties, employers and employees, navigate the sometimes frustrating process of onboarding and managing staff. “Everyone's worried about onboarding now. Folks who are in construction or retail may be worried about onboarding remotely, and on-site versus in a home office. We break it down into [questions] What are they most worried about? They're worried about their culture. They're worried about their experience, and people being connected. They're worried about things that are just mandatory to get. Making sure people get their time off and making sure they get paid well, and all those things are pretty consistent.”Keeping your employees happy and feeling valued will keep them around longer, and that's good for the bottom line. In this conversation, Amy goes over her thought-making process behind its current channel mix, and how she thinks about aligning her strategy to customer signals. How BambooHR is getting creative with the nudges they're able to program into apps such as Slack to improve employee experience. Think more about how you might be able to relieve onboarding stress at your business for both your employees and your managers in this conversation with Amy here on Marketing Trends. Main TakeawaysBots at Their Best: A.I. can be used in a variety of ways. One such use case is to nudge employees and managers to help them stay on top of their game on HR tasks, thereby creating a better employee experience. Making those important connections about pay, benefits, or time-off is easier when you don't even have to remember to set a reminder. Onboarding Overload: The workplace has changed for many the past year and a half and as many companies are staffing back up in a big way, fears about onboarding new staff are mounting. Each industry has its own concerns about best practices around even just the most simple things, such as staying up to date on benefits and time-off.Notice Shifts in Your Customer's Patterns to Keep Providing Value: The best brands and marketers stay agile because people are always evolving and changing themselves. To serve their needs, you need to think about the ways that major world events are impacting their lives and the ways they interact with your content. Key Quotes“We're looking at how we think about nudges employee experience is the ultimate goal of those that use Bamboo. My company's growing super fast. I need a great employee experience. We know there's the ‘great resignation' going on, but we also just want a great employee experience better for our teams, better for our customers. So we are looking at A.I. nudges right now within slack and in other places where we can say things like, ‘Hey, did you know, so-and-so hasn't had a raise in a year. You might want to look at that; or [they] haven't taken time off or, ‘Hey, I saw you just got a raise. You might want to look at your 401k contributions.' Automating some of those nudges so that it gets easier and easier to make those connections.”“Our partnerships are super important. Our HR users can do everything they need. Our payroll is U.S.-only so we've got great partners in Canada; we've got great partners in the UK etc. We've got a hundred partners in our marketplace through API and they can basically build a custom platform for their country.”“Everyone's worried about onboarding now. Folks who are in construction or retail may be worried about onboarding remotely, and on-site versus in a home office, but they're still worried about onboarding and we break it down into [questions] What are they most worried about? They're worried about their culture. They're worried about their experience, and people being connected. They're worried about things that are just mandatory to get. Making sure people get their time off and making sure they get paid well, and all those things are pretty consistent.”“You have to think about what little nuggets can you give people during their day to allow them to engage with your brand without assuming that they're doing all the things they used to do. [For example,] right now I personally love a shorter podcast because I'm not driving to work. I used to drive an hour and 15 minutes each way.”BioAs head of marketing at BambooHR, Amy focuses on creating compelling marketing experiences with the product, people, and brand together.
