When you think of a truck driver does that memorable scene from Thelma and Louise come to mind? Ellen Voie wants to change that stereotype and amplify gender diversity in the trucking industry; so she started Women in Trucking, a nonprofit, whose mission is to mentor women with the information, education, opportunity, community, and support they need to succeed in a male-dominated business. Established in 2007, the organization now boasts more than 4,000 members. Voie's pivot happened after earning degrees in broadcast journalism and communications. She landed a job in a steel fabricating plant where she moved up the ranks to transportation management and thus her second pivot into the trucking industry. Voie speaks about her organization's diversity and inclusion initiatives, the best practices for women drivers, and why “they should ask a lot of questions and make sure they know what they're getting into before signing on the dotted line.” She also lends her opinions on how the pandemic affected the trucking industry and why the turnover rate for “on the road” — or long-haul — drivers is so high. Ellen and Bill discuss how and why the organization began, who its members are (its not only women!) and the roles that women play in the trucking industry. Ellen shares how she attracts women to a traditionally male dominated industry by telling stories to describe the roles women can play in the industry and how they keep in touch with their members. Ellen and Bill also discuss how the association works with drivers to support their physical and mental health and managing the truck driver shortage by recruiting more women to be drivers. On the surface, trucking is not known for being female dominant. From equipment and facilities to standard uniforms and cab design, most things "trucking" are designed for men. In this episode, we dive beneath the surface and discover the ways the trucking industry is trying to encourage women to pursue careers in both trucking and logistics. We ask, what are industry executives doing to help bring more women into the fold, not only as drivers, but in leadership roles? How can we keep pushing towards a balanced boardroom? To get the clearest insight on the issue, host Mike Freeze talks with Ellen Voie, President and CEO of Women in Trucking and Debora Babin Katz, Vice President of TrucBrush Corporation. Although there is more pavement to cover, the road to more women in trucking is getting shorter and shorter. Tune in. Ellen Voie entered the trucking industry inadvertently. When she stumbled upon the trucking industry, she hadn't planned on making a career in transportation. Prior to joining the trucking industry, Ellen had been working at a steel fabricating plant within the Drafting Department. Management asked Ellen if she wanted to move into traffic and she agreed. She was sent to school to become educated in traffic and transportation management. Ellen believes that once an individual gets involved in the trucking industry, it gets in their blood and causes them to remain in the industry. After many years of working in the trucking industry, she has fallen in love with her career and area of work. Women in Trucking Association is an organization that Ellen founded in March 2007. As the founder of this non-profit association, Ellen serves as the President and CEO. Ellen founded the Women in Trucking Association to encourage women to pursue careers in the trucking industry. The Women in Trucking Association has the objective of eliminating obstacles that might prevent women from achieving success in the trucking industry. This association also aims to celebrate the successes and triumphs experienced by its members. Prior to founding the Women in Trucking Association, Ellen served as the Manager at Retention and Recruiting Programs in the largest truckload carrier in North America, Schneider, Inc. as the Manager at Retention and Recruiting Programs, Ellen was responsible for creating programs at the corporate level to encourage underrepresented groups to pursue careers in trucking. She also designed initiatives to reduce or eliminate common causes of driver dissatisfaction, which is the most common cause of high turnover rates. Ellen also managed the communication channels for drivers, such as the website, newsletter, and audio magazine. “83% of women enter the trucking industry after being encouraged by a friend or family member. This friend or family member is usually already employed in the trucking industry.” - Ellen Voie What you’ll learn about in this episode: The importance of celebrating female drivers Why the strategies for retaining and attracting female drivers is different from male drivers How women typically enter the trucking industry and what this means for trucking companies What drives women away from the trucking industry The impact of stereotypes and recruitment and retention of female drivers The importance of targeted and non-generic advertisements for the recruitment of female drivers How to create a solid recruitment message about safety to encourage female drivers to join the trucking industry The vulnerability of women in the trucking industry and how to minimize this vulnerability Ways to contact Ellen Voie: Website: www.womenintrucking.org Twitter: @WomenInTrucking
