    Winter - simple tips for well-being & immunity

    Welcome dear listener, Everything that you do affects your immune system. So I want to talk about staying well through the winter. And yes, I still get a head cold every winter. The difference today from years back is that instead of taking me down for a week or longer it is gone within 2 days. This is the power of the body and immune system when it is supported. We have to remember that we are culturally creating poor immunity, it is not nature being harder on us. It is the opposite. We are not honoring nature and nature's rhythms as a culture nor our inherent connection to it. Here is a few things to focus on over the next few months. Favor flavors that are sweet, sour, and salty. Foods that are warming, grounding, and satisfying for a balancing affect in the body and mind.  Focus on immune health. Lymphatic stimulationBouncing and shaking your body, dry brushing, massaging, abhyanga. Sweat regularlySauna and exercise. Keep hydrated Keep your bowels regularNatures probiotics with seasonal local foods and ferments. Eat herbs regularlyCinnamon, clove, oregano, echinacea, eucalyptus, elderberry, rosemary. Teas, tinctures, and never forget to use the culinary herbs in your cooking each day. Use variety in your culinary herbs. Balance your body to support your mind with healthy fats and winter vegetables to keep your intestinal lining lubricated. This time of year it is even more important to ground daily with meditation.     Kitchen sadhana, the art of nourishment.

    Welcome dear listener, We know this to be true, that your identity changes in relation to your habits. So I ask you. What are your habits that are reinforcing your beliefs around food? Welcome to your kitchen sadhnana - the spiritual path in the kitchen. More often than not I say this in a conversation around food because it’s needed as a reminder. “The quality of attention while eating is equally important as the quality of food you are eating.” So here are some helpful and simple points I tend to overlook as an educator on this topic. Is preparing food complicated, overwhelming, or intimidating? Then start small and don’t be afraid to try something new and mess up. In my experience, as long as you keep it simple it is hard to mess something up that dramatically. In this long term path of your kitchen sadhana, you want to think diversification of foods, and definitely aligned with the seasons. Let’s explore the art of nourishment and fueling yourself. You don’t want to be obsessed with your diet, it is supportive of, meaning it is not the path. Begin to think of life-force in your food, Is your food alive. In food, you find prana/energy, nutrients, and enzymes.Enzymes make the nutrients available Prana craves prana, as you embody higher quality prana that you acquire from yoga, you wake up to your body’s need for higher quality food. Which is why you may notice old patterns coming up to the surface and your old ways of doing things seem odd and out of pace. If this is the case then I want you to schedule a chat with me right here. Processing food to the degree that is prevalent in our culture, the prana is stripped out rendering the food DEAD, and even processed to the point of being DUMB-that begin to disrupt the communication between your cells. Something else to think about is limiting distractions while you prepare your food and while you eat your food. Reconnecting with the simplicity of eating and enjoying the whole experience. The old world processing look like preserving and fermenting which keep the prana, enzymes, and nutrient availability high.     Abhyanga - a daily ritual for well-being

    Welcome dear listener, Abhyanga is the practice of self-massage with oil. It is one of the non-negotiable practices I teach in my evolving habits course because it invites you to become integrated in your own body.  On the basic mental level it calms the nerves and helps to balance to nervous system from the touch and massage. Going a bit deeper it helps you feel comfortable in your own skin by the loving touch you offer yourself through the practice.     Universal Consciousness & Ayurveda

    Welcome dear listener, Ayurveda is the complete mind, body, spirit approach to living well. When you take this approach you see how every action you make influences your experience. You see how everything in life is a dynamic dance with nature's rhythms, either flowing in rhythm with or out of sync with those rhythms.  Developing a good relationship with these rhythms is the beginning. The dinacharya practices I explain in this episode become your roadmap, opening yourself up to your vitality while learning what works well and what doesn't.  This is what I call Embodied Awakening. It is the awakening to your deeply sourced energy by embodying, that means doing what you need to thrive. This process is continual and cleans the layers of your self so you can become a cleaner expression of universal consciousness. This is what I help people do. Establish rhythms and routines that help you grow, learn, and access your state of vitality and well-being.     Is your food stressing you out?

    Whats your relationship to stress? This is the second in a series on stress where I want to break down food as nourishment to build vitality.   The thing is it can be easy to be very rigid about what you eat, trying really hard to not have too much of this or that. This can be stressful if you are too rigid and always thinking about it. Which is why you need to make sure you are in a state of receptivity when you go to put that food in your mouth no matter what it is.   The quality of energy and attention in which you eat your food is as important as your food itself. Plain and dimple you will not receive the nutrition if you body is in a sympathetic state of stress. Simple solution… Take ten deep breaths when you sit down to eat and appreciate all that it took to bring that food to you. And better yet you can do the meditation practice I shared in the last episode for building heart centered presence.   We know that when you are in an activated/stressful state, certain biological functions are shut down so energy is redirected for you to be able to get out of a potentially harmful situation. This means the digestive system is also shut down, and in severe instances your bowels can release. Where the phrase I just shit my pants came from. But this also affects your ability to feel good and nourished from your food because in your gut is where neurotransmitters are made. If your gut is in a state of stress the only job is to not die. Not necessarily to feel great. And feeling great comes from being nourished on a cellular level.   When this goes on for too long you deplete your vitality known as Ojas. And you don’t want that. You want to be building your vitality so you have healthy skin and bodily tissue, so you can express yourself in a clear way. This is all connected to digestion and your ability to break down the food properly and receive the nutrition. Which is governed by your ability to enter into a truly receptive state.   But what about the food itself as a stressor? Lets shift to look at food as information and intelligence. There is a lot of good information out there, and we also know there is a lot of bad information. Intelligence in your body is built on receiving good information, and intelligence in the food itself is based on the environment it was grown in.   When the information is bad, it dumbs down your body, and when that is persistent it begins to degenerate your body. This bad information signals your cells to do certain things you might not want if vitality is your aim, and begins to degenerate your cells. On the genetic level, we know that genes are expressed in various ways that is influenced by their environment and information present. In this case food is that information. Good information coming into a peaceful receptive environment means healthy cells, healthy genes. The process of regeneration and rejuvenation.   So lets organize food into these three categories. Alive food - Not necessarily raw, but contains prana, life-force that is highly intelligent. Dead food - shelf stable empty calories, no life-force, crackers, chips, supplemental stuff. Dumb food - highly processed and refined junk. Bad information that stresses your body. Blocks the communication between your cells, Also remember that your immune system is directly connected to your gut, when your gut is stressed, immune function goes down……Incomplete digestion, no replenishment of vitality. Now is a good time to take a look at what you are feeding yourself and How you are feeding yourself on a regular basis. Both of these are just as important. This is what I am doing beginning Tuesday 9/24. A seasonal rejuvenation detox to remove the things that might be degenerating my body.     Eat real food for longevity

    Welcome dear listener, The stakes are high and the potential is higher. This is what one of my mentors recently said in a meeting. It really shows the importance of needing to change behaviors to support that of longevity, because the truth is… if you don’t the chances are high that you will experience an auto immune reaction, digestion complication, compounding stress due to poor sleep and the long list of complications that are connected to poor sleep. This is why I am such a huge advocate of changing habits. Its your habits that shape your experience, whether they are conscious, or unconscious.   So what about your unconscious eating behaviors? Trust me, I had many of these poor eating habits that led me to have poor digestion, bloating, gas for such a long time, and I didn’t know that it was optional… I didn’t;’t know there was another way. Today the importance of meal spacing, not snacking, not overeating, no over indulging is ever so important, especially with the abundance of food always available. And there is no short of information out there, especially in social media, and it’s easy to forget how to take action when you find yourself lost trying to find the culprit causing your digestive distress when in fact it’s likely that it’s coming from an unconscious habit trigger. So I want to highlight the importance of bringing the unconscious habits around eating and nourishment to the conscious . Because nourishment comes in through  all of your senses, its imperative to be aware of how you are feeding your senses. Everything that comes through your sense needs to go through a digestion process. When things aren’t being fully digested, transformed, processed, and integrated, it builds up. This is exactly why meditation is so very important because it gives space to your mind to process your experiences. Space is connected to your spirit which brings a cleanliness to your mind, a higher quality consciousness that allows you to see the mind as a product of nature. Where as without meditation it is easy to be controlled by and identify with your mind, your thoughts, beliefs, etc. On to food through your mouth. I have covered this before and I do it again because it’s that important. Looking at your unconscious habits around eating  is critical for maintaining optimal energy, physically, and mentally. A few key points which I find that most people I speak to are doings no matter how much they know about healthy food and all the stuff is consistent snacking. Not giving enough space between meals to digest and integrate the food before throwing something else down the hatch. Again space here brings in nourishment into your spirit and how fasting for longer periods is done as a spiritual practice in many traditions. But there are many unconscious triggers here that could be the reason for not bringing in space between meals.   These triggers can be a specific place, an emotion such as boredom, an action like getting home from work, a specific time like sunset, even other people like, hey do you want to go get pizza and a beer? So in this it is crucial to be specific about what it is you want to change and repeating it over and over again. Your best measuring stick here is checking in to how you feel when you wake up, before and after your meals, and when you go to sleep. This will help you see where you could feel a bit better. And in that you can begin to map out your actions, noticing the situations triggering you to do certain things. Awareness is the first step here, bringing the unconscious routines to the conscious level so you can bring the higher quality of consciousness to it.    Then we get into the topic of what to eat. This is where simplicity really comes in. Ill keep riding the wave of digestion here because I know too many people who experience regularly digestive discomfort. Simplicity and real food  rules here. I know packages stuff is convenient, Heck I still eat things that come out of a package too. Nothing beats real fresh food and learning about how it supports your cells is important. Not only does real food contain nutrients, it contains information and prana. The informations tells your genes what to do and prana nourishes your subtle energy system within the cells.   When you look at the blue zones around the world, these are the areas that have the highest number of people living over 100 years, they all have some similarities. They don’t eat packaged and processed food with preservatives, extra sugar, extra salt, or processed beverages with empty calories. They eat whole grains, bitter greens and veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, and in some of the blue zones they also eat meat and fish. However it’s not in the way that our culture consumes it and not as regularly with bacon for breakfast, burger for lunch, and chicken for dinner. It is ore intentional where people gather as families and friends to share a meal in a communal setting.   I see a lot on social media about the different diets and how grains are bad, beans give you gas, wheat is the devil and so on. What I have noticed is that it’s the food that is inherently bad, it is the lost art of preparation that is contributing to people not being able to eat them, along with the domestication of these plants in combination with chemical agriculture destroying the good bacteria found on them. Traditionally these grains are soaked and fermented and throughly washed before cooking and even sprouted before hand. Same for the beans. Beans from a can, and hummus from a store bought container are not the same food as the old world methods of preparation. It’s as simple as that. What I find to be so freaking cool though is the amount of potent herbs and spices consumed, and most cases wild herbs which have higher potency for strengthening your immune system. From rosemary to ginger, cinnamon to fenugreek, herbs and spices carry abundant information to signal your body to do certain things genetically, and even feed specific strains of bacteria which populate your whole gut system. This is why I love bitters so much and travel with a spray bottle where ever I go. I see that it is easy to paint the picture either black or white. Meat is good or meat is bad and it all comes down to your personal beliefs and morals. This is where the power lies within how you feel and what do you need to feel nourished beyond what your unconscious habits are signaling to you. So how about the rant on what to eat, It is not the case of this is good or this is bad. In my experience and what I have noticed in helping others it comes down to breaking the unconscious habits around eating, including when, where, what, why, and how, by discovering the triggers. And then making slightly better decisions over time. And remember the stakes are high for not changing your behaviors and the potential for what is possible for you to experience is even higher!     Turn your objection into an objective

    When it comes to doing the things we know we need or could be doing to upgrade our life, we find objections. We also find obstacles between us and the things we know we ned to do. These should be expected as part of the process. Common objections are around Time Money Common obstacles involve the following. Ignorance - not knowing why, what, how, when Desire - opposing or mis-aligned with your vision Aversion - dislikes, hatred. When you get clear on our obstacles, how they show up, what they are, you can lean into them, move through them, learn from them and use that learning as fuel to meet your desired outcome. To do the thing that you know you ned to be doing. This is the process of transformation. To meet greet and respond to all the shit that comes up up. No feeding the aversions, rather welcoming them and seeing them as opportunities to learn how to do something differently. Turn our objections into objectives. - I can’t loose the weight because I don’t know how to cook - In order for me to loose some weight I need to learn how to cook some healthy food. - What are your objections around beginning to make the changes you know you need to make? Write them down. Share them with someone, get clear on what they look like and how they show up. - Is it an outdated or Mal-aligned desire? - Is it an aversion to this or that? Think regular bed time, routine, the belief that structure limits spontaneity. - Is it ignorance around the importance of supporting yourself in the various ways for a long healthy life? This is part of the evolution of your identity and aligning it with the type of person who cooks for themselves. Commit to the objective. Ask for help when needed, So write down your main vision, that state of experience you deserve to embody. Get clear on the objections, those things in the way between you and that state of embodiment, Get ready to lean into and use those obstacles and objections as fuel to access that state of embodiment, Then get clear on action steps to begin the process.     We all know the most common benefits of meditation. Calming the nerves, changing the brainwave states, reducing stress, emotional regulation, strengthens self awareness, improves sleep, lower blood pressure. What about the change of identity, beliefs, and who we believe ourselves to be? One of my mentors was speaking on this topic and what she said was profound. Evolution speaks to us through desire. What is it trying to come through you?  What do you desire to share, lean, experience, teach, feel, understand, and ..... be? When it comes to getting out of our own way, practicing meditation becomes a great place to begin letting go of our old identity and feeling into openness, listening to the the inner guidance. The book "the jewel of abundance" by Ellen Grace O'Brien, delves into artha, one of the four aims or desires from yoga toward living a prosperous life. When you are not living up to your potential you will feel a sense of needing more. Not from an egoic sense where it’s all about you.     Embodied Awakening

    Welcome dear listener, Today i want to talk to you about Embodied awakening What is it? Its the application of specific behaviors that bring us back home into nature, into your body. It is a program which explores the elements, their qualities and how they affect your mind body connection. Over time these practices create the foundation for subtle transformation of understanding, of awakening. Just like in meditation, we begin with our relationship to the physical body, to physical sensation. In this program you will begin to shift and change your behaviors to align with nature. Whether we like it or not, we are circadian beings. Our hormonal system, digestive system, everything runs on this planetary rhythm of light and dark. So that where we begin. Bringing more consistency to sleep patterns and routines. Over time aligning into deeper integrity with the circadian cycle. What this does is open the potential for your down time, your sleep to become deeply rejuvenating, so you wake up energized, ready to go and ready to serve, and share your unique skills and gifts. We need this time for rest. Just as we need time for action and outward interaction. The thing is that today most people don’t get the down time they really need. The down time is spent with screens, flooding the mind with more information, to the point of overstimulation and a dis regulated nervous system. The circadian alignment is just the beginning. From there we move into activating the body through breath and movement. Through sweat and heat, and you will learn the importance of keeping the waste systems of the body open to prevent disease. What does it mean for you to care for your self? It is a buzz word today, the self love and self care. True self care is more than just saying I love you to yourself in the mirror or taking a warm bath. You need your actions to show your care for your self, you need your behaviors and choices to show that you care for your body and mind. It is learning how to have a body, how to connect with your emotions, how to use the sacred yes and sacred no. This is a life long relationship you are building with your body and mind, and we explore deeply supportive practices that bring you back into your heart and your senses. What does it mean to eat healthy? Health s such a personal experience. Food is a personal experience. One food might be healthy for one person and not for someone else. You will explore your personal relationship with the elements, the subtle qualities of food, and learn how to choose food that will energize you and rebuild a strong and healthy body. We cover the six tastes, the digestive health, and how to use seasonal cleansing to restore body, mind, and spiritual connection. Meditation is the experience of awareness and understanding. A connection to the flow of your consciousness in any moment. The practice can become a space to digest lifestyle experiences, a space that with practice, opens you up to the inner happiness and peace that is always there. An opportunity to integrate life and awaken to the potential which are always within you. What I can guarantee you is that you will understand what your needs are to thrive all year long.     A dance in the infinite

    Welcome dear listener, There are countless forces pulling you out of balance. These forces challenge your emotions, create dissonance between your heart and your mind. These forces pull you out of sync with nature causing physical distress, wearing you out on all levels. It doesn't have to be like that.  I offer personal in-home retreats where I come to your house, helping you create a healthy environment in alignment with your goals. It really is a fun and interactive way to start fresh in a way that is supportive and sustainable. You can find out more here. A dance in the infinite. How meditative experiences help align me to my truth and help me express myself without holding back. Meditation is more of an experience than a practice. A state of surrender and understanding. The practice however creates the possibility of this experience, guiding the practitioner into this experience of meditation. So what is the practice? The implementation of new beliefs which facilitate freedom from the personal experience. The i am experience attached to the entrained beliefs of being separate from nature. The implementing of the new beliefs which see oneself as part of the whole. The practice of embracing the human experience as part of nature, rather than separate from or higher than nature. For me meditation is not transcending being human, but the full embodiment of that and using the timeless wisdom of nature, sensation, and perception as the guidance into embodiment. -Observing my thought patterns and beliefs, choosing and implementing new beliefs. Our common underlying experience is peace, happiness, equanimity. However our thoughts and beliefs tend to separate ourselves and isolate ourselves from that underlying happiness and peace. -I get asked a lot how are you. And I generally answer, I am great. So I am questioning if I really can be great even amongst a hardship, a difficult experience, a loss. And what I have realized is that when each emotion and experience is filtered through my mind it accumulates a residue of my belief about what is happening. Through practice of observing these systems of the mind, I catch a glimpse of that underlying tone of peace and happiness. It is a glimpse into the infinite support of nature.  So remember to shine your light, dance your dance, say and do what you need to say and do to express yourself. These are the gateways into the infinite. Nature moving through you. The cosmic dance of creation. Get out of the mind and into your heart.     Spring - How to deal with toxic overloading.

These toxins accumulate in our body and over time manifest as any number of diseases and complications. Eating organic is important however it is not enough. What we really need to be doing on a regular basis is emptying our system of toxins so we can move through life with more energy.  Agricultural toxins and pesticides have been found in the rain and therefore showing up pretty much everywhere, even organic produce. This is why it is important to take some time during the spring and fall to lessen the toxic load on the body. We do this with less food, choosing easily digestible food which enhance the digestive system, and choosing the right foods that enhance the innate detox systems within your body. Combining this with self massage techniques is a very powerful way to help our body take out the toxic trash and start feeling better again. It is important in our contemporary time with the abundance of any food we could imagine at every time of day, to eat simply for a period of time to allow the digestive system to reset itself. So... Are you ready to rejuvenate your digestive system?   First is time restricted eating and fasting. These practices increase the bodies ability to burn fat and cellular regeneration.     Spring - Up-level your exercise and keep things moving.

    Welcome back dear listener, Spring is coming. Have you felt it? This transition is is very dramatic for the body, moving from light and cold to the eventual wet and warm of spring.  Being mindful about how what you eat, how you move, exercise, and how well you care for your body affects how you feel. I have for noticed a shift going on, I noticed how I need to amp up my movement to build more heat in the body, beginning to up regulate my own detox pathways, through sweat, pranayama, hydrating and urinating regularly and keeping my bowels consistent. This is a good time to be spending some time in a sauna or anything that promotes a good sweat, A good measuring stick for understanding one’s health is the function of the three malas. These are your sweat, urine, and bowels. When these avenues for waste are blocked they cause disruptions within all of the tissues, vayus, and therefore disrupting the mind. This is the psychophysiological, mind-body connection that yoga guides us to explore, it guides us into a place of inquiry so we can notice what is working for our highest good and what is not working.  Daily yoga practice is one of the best ways to keep the metabolic waste moving, preventing stagnation through metabolic activation. When there is disruption in the avenues of waste, mind-body disruption occur and cam manifest as any other these three forms of erroneous thoughts or beliefs. Due to the metabolic activities being carried out on a constant basis, by-products are formed on a constant basis. If these malas are not formed on a regular basis, anabolism (constructive metabolism) and catabolism (destructive metabolism) are disrupted resulting the formation of malforming tissues. Through the practice of yoga and application of Ayurvedic principles we can learn how to identify when erroneous beliefs and thoughts arise and in which area they are dominant. We have the understanding to pay attention to particular areas of our self to find where the disruption began and then how to facilitate proper healing through dinacharya.
