My hope with today's episode is to shed some light on self-care and its many misconceptions. We don't need to feel shame or selfish for prioritizing our goals so we can create a life we can thrive in. Here's a gentle reminder: No matter what we accomplished today, or how much money we made, or what we ate for breakfast, we are all worthy of self-care.And when I say self-care, I'm not talking about face masks, bubble baths, and nights out on the town. Imagine if we could all align with our highest purpose by taking the time for deep, reflective inner work. Imagine the love we could share and the impact we'd have on the world - it would be so incredible! Because if we can't settle our minds and be kind to ourselves, then what good are those spa days?Resources & LinksBe sure to check out next week's episode featuring Randi Halaway, the self-love and business coach who has been one of my biggest supporters and guides.Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? Today I'm thrilled to be talking to Lindsey Lapointe, aka The Freelance Adventurer, and the brilliance behind the Seacoast Hikes Instagram page. The struggle can be oh-so-real when you're trying to get little kids outside with you (and simultaneously trying to salvage some sliver of fun for yourself). Even the most experienced outdoorswoman can find herself struggling on a new-to-her trail when it's buggier or harder or wetter or longer than expected, and her little wing-people start coming off the rails.Despite years of experience leading older kids on outdoor trips, Lindsey hit this wall of frustration herself when she had her second child and tried to keep up her hiking habit with two kids < 3. Not only did Lindsey manage to bust through that wall, but she's taking us all with her with Seacoast Hikes and Nature Walks, Volume 1 (and hopefully soon Volume 2!) which I'm excited to be talking about with her today.Make sure to grab yourself a copy of Seacoast Hikes and Nature Walks (and start working on your patch now!)You'll also want to checkout Lindsey's blog and follow her on the socials, @SeacoastHikes and @FreelanceAdventurer, for helpful videos of recommended hikes and tons of tips and inspiration. hello. Hello, vitality seekers. This is your host Caroline Schafer. Today. I'm doing a very special episode and I am not having a guest and we are going to talk about the naughty and nice lists. I know lists of very prevalent this time of year with the holidays. And I thought it would be very appropriate to discuss that today. I'm hoping it's helpful for your holidays and we'll add a little peace throughout them. We all have these lists. I probably have more than most. I have lists upon lists everywhere I go and I even joke that my lists have lists, but seriously, this time of year, we all have holiday gift lists. Christmas lists, party to do lists, Christmas card lists, maybe a list of things that you're trying to accomplish before the holidays. But nonetheless, these lists that we're going to talk about today are naughty and nice list, they can help you feel better and manage the holiday season with a little hopefully kinder mindset. So let's talk about the nice list. The nice list is maybe six or eight things that you can put on it, for the holidays to bring you some peace and happiness, some small items that would benefit you personally. This holiday season is so stressful for so many and I think that most of us forget that it should be based around joy and we get caught up and all the craziness that gets put upon us commercially. So I have 12 items, like the 12 days of Christmas. some ideas you can put on your nice list, the be kinder to you list. Maybe there's a restaurant in your area that you've always wanted to try and you never took the time. That's a good one. Number two, buy yourself a favorite cup of coffee or tea or a brand of specific tea that you always enjoy. Three- call a best friend, or maybe someone that you've lost touch with that you've been meaning to contact. Number four, get a massage, a Mani and peti, and those feel good things. Get your hair done. That's always something kind for yourself. Number five buy your favorite meal. And this could either be going out or it could be even better. I liked the idea of buying the ingredients, maybe things that are not normally on your weekly grocery shopping lists and making something special, either with a loved one or a family member or you can do with friends, but take the time to enjoy without rushing a meal that you really, really like.Number six, 10, extra minutes, taking maybe a shower or a sauna or 10 minutes extra working out, or if it's something you really enjoy, but just put 10 extra minutes buffer somewhere on your schedule to add in some goodness for your health. Number seven a bath. Baths are very relaxing, especially at night. They do help and promote good sleep. It is not as much for the relaxation as you think it is more because when you get out your body core temperature reduces, and that is beneficial for REM sleep. But nonetheless, a nice bath with maybe a favorite playlist or a favorite audio book, add a candle. that hopefully will add some peace to this crazy time.Number eight, go for a walk at maybe a beach or a park or in the woods. There, a science behind that, that backs up the concept of walking in nature is better for you than just walking in a street. So maybe you could take advantage of. Number nine, meditate start if you have never done so or maybe add five minutes or 10 minutes to your normal regimen, meditation has so many wonderful benefits. If you haven't enjoyed the tranquility of that, then I hope that this will give you the incentive to do so. How about number 10, a date night? It can be with a girlfriend, a partner, husband, parent whatnot, it doesn't have to be complicated. It can be as something as doing Netflix and a pizza, but as long as you put it on the calendar, because when you do so you actually look forward to the event and that also releases endorphins as much as being in the actual event itself. Same situation as vacations. They have done studies and it's not just the vacation, but the planning, and the activities of looking into it actually is beneficial for your health as well. Number 11, hire someone for a task that you normally do yourself. Maybe one night, you could have a personal chef or at your house clean. Maybe you can get somebody to do your lighting outside and it doesn't necessarily have to be a company. Maybe some teenagers in the neighborhood. Then there is wrapping the gifts, I know a lot of people don't like that, that happens to be one of my favorite things, but, maybe you can hire your babysitter that normally watches your children to wrap your gifts and you can make cookies with your kids instead, that would kind of be fun or a home delivery for your groceries. If you don't normally do that, maybe this is a good idea this time of year to do something like that and try it and save yourself a little bit of time. These are all things that I hope add value or make deposits in your life. This time of year, there's so many withdrawals on our time, on our finances, on our emotion, mindset... we get so caught up with the negativity that we forget that it is supposed to be a time for peace and good things. I'd like you to schedule them, specifically with a day in a time. For instance, Monday morning at 9:00 AM, I will go to the farmer's market. So that is the nice list. All right. Then we have the, not to do lists the naughty list, I'd love for you to think of this as a peace protector. This is a list of things that don't add value to your life. It is not something that means you're bad, but it means that the act of doing this is negatively affecting you. So things that waste your time or distractions like social media or a long-winded person that you know. Or things that stress you out, maybe, you can limit time with those kinds of people that stress you out. I like to categorize people as either energy givers or energy takers and you really need to hang out with the energy givers, especially this time of year. So limit if you know, people that are drainers limit your time with them and have protect yourself. The next one, things that are not imperative, you want to get them done, but maybe just take a second and think this is really have to have to have to be done before the holiday. Can it wait until after the holiday and pull this burden off of me and make my life a little bit easier would that joy of not having that on my list outweigh the benefit of having it done. Think about that a little. And then things that you feel obligated to do. Learn to say, no, thank you. Learn to ask for help, lower your bar for expectations, don't try to be the Superman or the superwoman. Less can be more simplify things as much as possible and reduce that self pressure. And lastly, think about what is in your control. This is huge. Most things fall into this category. You really only can control yourself. You really can't control your kids, your partner, your employer, or any of those things. Examples of things that should be put on the, not to do list. I have 12 again; don't look at your phone may be for the first hour of the day. A lot of times that causes people undo stress. I meditate with my phone, so I use it right away, but a lot of times people, look at email and negative social media and they get a lot of angst right up and out of the get, go in the morning. That is not a good thing. Don't read those specific emails from specific people that you know, that are going to cause you aggravation, try to at least give yourself an hour to get up and get awake before you tried to ingest that. Number two, don't multitask, most things go faster with focus. I know everyone tries to multitask a million things. I am guilty as well, if it doesn't relate to other people, I will sometimes multitask. If other people involved, I try harder to keep focused with that individual. Number three, don't sit at your desk for more than an hour. It is proven that if you take breaks, it is much better for productivity. Then there's, if you have your head Hanker down and just keep at it. So, look up, make your eyes stared to something in the distance. That's good for your vision. Get up, shake those legs around. Tony Robbins says, Move your ass and you get happier, even 30 seconds. Um, they had surrounded. It definitely makes you feel better. Number four, don't stay up too late. It is best to get to bed by 10. The first two hours of sleep from 10 to 12 are equivalent to four hours of sleep after that time, because they help restore and regenerate all the healing in your body. So you're doubling up on your restorative benefits from getting to bed by 10. If you can keep a consistent schedule through the holidays, that will also help you keep focus and have more energy during your day and get more things done rather than stay up and keep pushing. Number five, don't go over your holiday budget. I know finances are a huge thing for people. I'll just say that something that I've been doing for years, and it's funny, cause it involves a list, but I keep index cards with everybody's name on the top. I write, ideas of gifts on one side, what I have bought and then I total it on the right side and keep a tally. It works great for kids and keeping things balanced. Um, but stick to it, track it. Number six, don't get caught up in the commercialism of the holiday. It's so easy to do the heck with the Jones is and make the cookies instead of buying the bigger gift, your kids will appreciate the time spent with them, then that gift that's going to end up getting dusty, and thrown in the corner. So time is the most important thing, not the object. Number seven, don't go off your routine. As we talked about with the sleeping same thing, and especially with exercise and diet, a lot of you hear people say you deserve it. It's a treat Baba. Um, treating yourself to depression. I never see a benefit in that. One of the ways that people do that is going off their diet, especially this time of year, a lot of sugar gets involved. That's a sure-fire way of having things go down a negative path. Number eight. Don't spend too much time with those energy drainers. We talked about that. Um, the negative Nellies the downers, the people who always al every story into something that makes you feel bad. Um, keep those assigned if their relatives keep those Conversations limited, excuse yourself, find something to do or when you get on the phone specifically say upfront that you have something to do in five minutes or something so that it it's limited right out of the gate. Number 10, don't go to all the parties or all the invitations you get. Um, if it's an enormous amount, some people have a very long list of invites, um, and it gets to be a job in itself. So learn to say, no, thanks. And it'll be okay. It actually will make you a little saner through the positive, through the process. Number 11. Don't try to do it all alone. Ask a friend, ask a neighbor, ask for help. Asking for help is such a beautiful thing. People like to feel wanted. And a lot of people hesitate to ask, but asking is a gift on both ends.It helps you and the other person usually enjoys giving. So, try, try to do that. It's a little bit of an uncertainty muscle for most of us, but asking is a good number. 12th don't hold onto grudges or negative feelings. This is very important. It probably the best one. I forgive fast and move on. I used to think that forgiveness equated to condonement. But it doesn't, actually when you forgive somebody, it helps you more than the person that you forgive. It's like taking the burden of weight off of you and you no longer have to think about. So remember that forgive fast and move on and put it behind you that it's not worth carrying around that extra weight. That a lot of times grudges and negative feelings carry, it's the holidays. It's the best time of year to do that. hopefully you guys all got some great ideas, some holiday hacks, if you will, that will result in less than usual signs of mental and physical fatigue. Please send me an email. If you utilize some of these and tell me what works best for you. I would really love that feedback. Um, And it would just be great to hear from all of those listening out there. And I very much appreciate you listening. So I thank you. Please send me an email. If you have implemented some of these ideas and let me know what worked best for you, I really would love the feedback. You can email to info@fitframeworks.com. Again, that's info I N F o@fitframeworks.com F I T F R a M E S. Dot com. Thank you. And I want everyone to remember that life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself. Happy holidays!
Escaping the modern world on a multiday walk in nature is an increasingly popular global holiday pastime, but as demand rises are we creating too many trails, huts and lodges within our national parks? Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall and The Age environment reporter Miki Perkins discuss how walks can be made more accessible, without devaluing and degrading the very wilderness that makes them so special Read the story here. Did you do your homework? This is Part 2 of my interview with Malcolm Saunders and I hope you are as pumped as I am to finish this one. Picking up right where we left off continuing with how Malcolm has been looking at food and everything that comes along with that. Then we touch briefly on some of the other topics that I enjoy talking to Malcolm with and hearing how he got to his beliefs and views. A little mushroom talk. How are mushrooms helping to heal you? How do you help your kids get the nutrition they need? And yes some covid chat. Malcolm has pretty active in sharing his voice, research, and views for himself and his business. Helping customers find natural healthy foods, herbs and supplements, to help your body be able to thrive. You may not agree with all that he says about the subject, let's face it that is a big split on much of this. However like I say in the show I feel that Malcolm is saying these things with love in his heart. And of course you are welcome to your own option on the subject. Malcolm from the Light Cellar! Yup that's right we get to hear from this amazing human. If you are yet to hear of my guest this week from Light Cellar please come along this ride with me. First time meeting Malcolm personally or even going to the store. I was so pleased right from pulling up! All of the staff was super nice and you could see the passions on their faces, for their job and helping others. Defiantly my kinda place and now I can't wait to get back! The love and education that spills out of this soul is not found often these days. Listen to how one persons relationship with food, turned into a life of passion for his family and community. Learn so many new things about food and a healthy lifestyle that you maybe didn't know or could use a refresher on. When someone spends so much of their life dedicated to a healthier life, you can tell Malcolm is swimming in information and research. Such a unique and beautiful way to look at food and the food industry. I truly admire all of the love that Malcolm has for his community. Trying to work together for the greater goof for our planet and everything within it. But what do you think? Is he on to things or just another Hippie? I'm sure there are many people on both sides of that question. I enjoy that either way you are leaning to Malcolm is such a great leader in my mind because he gets people thinking. Gets people in the mood to learn more about anything just simply to learn more. A keynote of a Charlotte Mason education is the nature walk. Would you believe we have never had an episode dedicated solely to this topic? Going on a nature walk is one way. What each person receives or perceives is what matters the most. It invites us to listen and observe. Prior to going on your walk, you may choose to quieten yourself, calming your mind. Do some slow breaths, to feel and listen to the air you breath passing through your nose and into your lungs and out again. This may take a few minutes or a little longer. Take that first step, Go for a walk, wherever you may be, notice your surroundings, write down your experiences. And remember that sometimes the walk is simply to be more connected and grounded with the earth. You can contact Heather Oliver through her website healingwithnaturestouch.com or by visiting our website www.awakeningspirituality.ca. Join us for our first podcast of Awakening Spirituality. Awakening Spirituality is a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore your spirituality and share with other seekers. In the first half of this episode we talk with Tina Heathers who introduces us to the concept of an online spiritual community, what it encompasses and offers those seeking spiritual exploration. She invites you to listen in to one of our podcasts, join a webinar, listen to others sharing their stories about their spiritual journeys, see if it resonates for you. Spirituality can be anything that makes you aware of the sense that there is more to you than just a biological physical being. That there is something greater brewing within you. That your mind can sense information and experiences with no logical explanation. There is way more out there you could be experiencing if you are brave enough to become a spiritual explorer. And, if you are ready to question your traditional beliefs and hidden bias and conditioning. You can contact Tina by email tina@awakeningspirituality.ca or visit the website: www.awakeningspirituality.ca or join our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=awakening%20spirituality You can visit Tina's personal website at : www.thesilencewithin.com or email her at tina@thesilencewithin.com In the second half of this episode we speak with Susan Scott, and author and editor who encourages documenting journeys, which is the spiritual life story work, at it's heart is about storytelling. Her lifelong passion has been for powerful, transformative stories that inspire healing change. She does this through creative writing, but also helping anyone who's willing to grapple with the whole gloriously messy range of human experience. Susan is on a mission to make up for lost time, to circle back and find lost voices and perspectives, to bring everyone into the circle. To give the voices of the human experience that have been lost or overlooked; other voices that weren't valued, people's stores that weren't collected and preserved. Women's voices, who were who were actively suppressed. Hi friend, Simplicity and clarity are the antidotes to uncertainty and complexity. It really is how we view something and the meaning we give it that determines our overall experience with that thing. Does fear have you by the hair. Are you able to see what is really happening in a larger perspective right now? It’s not easy especially if you have ben in a fear based mindset for any period of time. I want to invite you to make a shift right now and focus on the good that is happening in your life. Even as simple as having the means to listen to this. Or to have functioning hearing to hear this. There is so much we all my self included take for granted each day and I hope this catalyzes people to make the shift. From fear to gratitude. From uncertainty to simplicity. From complexity to clarity. And let my voice be another reminder. Today you get to hear a chat I had with my friend Serena Amoroso of Akasi Being. You might remember her as she is a past guest here from back in the day . We streamed this right into mind body spirit support facebook group last week and I encourage you to join if you aren’t already in there. It is a great place to connect, support, ask questions, and meet new awesome people with similar values. So join with the link in the notes or just search Mind, Body, Spirit Support with Alec Hurley. This week, we sat down with multi-instrumentalist and producer, filous. He hails from Vienna, Austria and started playing music at only 10 years old. On tour, he plays the harmonica, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, and even started learning an instrument called the “onde magnetique,” which is cassette taped based. Early on, he played in metal bands, got into jazz, and eventually tested his hand at electronic remixes. His remix for ‘Coming Over’ by James Hersey, has north of 50 million streams on Spotify. Filous continues to add to his repertoire with original tracks like ‘Bicycle’ and ‘All My Friends are Rich.’ In this conversation, we talk about a lot of things that are important, even outside of music, so I encourage you to listen to it in its entirety. We discuss Filous’ techno Grandma, what we would do with our ‘rich friends,’ getting too high, the collaborative process, Ted Talks, and more. In this interview, I talk with Jason Fletcher, founding Headmaster of Heritage School in Cambridge. Heritage is the only school I am aware of that is committed to (and actively promotes) a Charlotte Mason education in the UK. Jason explains its unique pertinence to the educational priorities of our times. We discuss, * The fight against apathy and disenchantment * The founding of Heritage * Charlotte Mason - her history and philosophy * The tragedy of apathy, and what Heritage does to tackle it. * How exam preparation distorts ‘true education’ * Living ideas / books vs "Twaddle" * The natural attractiveness of knowledge * Narrative history and the importance of giving children a “plausible story” about the past * The teaching method of Narration: how it distinguishes itself from spoon-feeding and how it helps children improve their attention (which is in 'crisis') * The role of the teacher - “masterly inactivity” * Christian education and working across faith boundaries * The Christian view of the Person - the "mystery of the person" - vs Locke’s blank slate * Education as “the Science of Relations” * Growth mindset * Optimism and anti-reductionism * Heritage's approach to behaviour and discipline; how to create a calm school. * The importance of aesthetics in a school * Jason's anti-bureaucratic style of leadership in the school - e.g. in guidance on lesson planning and reporting * The Book of Centuries * Cross-disciplinary / interdisciplinary education - how to do it properly and how not to do it. * Nature Study and Nature Walks in the Seasons; environmental education. * Charges of "Retreatism", Luddism or Romanticism. How does Charlotte Mason prepare children for the 21st Century? Answer: the importance of the will. The “directed life”. * How counter-cultural Heritage is in its promotion of the "richer things" vs technology * e.g. Smartphones vs dumbphones. iPads vs attention and ruminating on the text; going against the tide. www.superiorselfwithkjlandis.com/bio The Healing Power Of Silence http://learntruehealth.com/healing-power-silence Silence is a powerful healing tool. However, many people take it for granted. To further expound on how silence dramatically contributes to our overall well-being, I'm ecstatic that health and life coach KJ Landis is once again on the show today! Dark Past For those who missed listening to KJ Landis' past guesting, I'm re-introducing her before we dive into the topic for today's episode. You'll be so blown away as to how KJ Landis survived a dark past and transformed herself to become a fantastic coach today. First of all, KJ Landis was an educator in the mid-80s. However, before that, she reveals that she was obese as a child. As a victim of sexual molestation by some adult and teenaged male relatives, KJ Landis used food and music as comfort. Throughout that time, KJ Landis kept silent. Fast forward several years later, KJ Landis found herself again struggling with weight issues during her mid-40s. She eventually found ways to lose the weight and sought ways to maintain her weight. New Forms Of Silence KJ Landis found that silence was the solution for her to keep the weight off. However, unlike the kind of silence she went through during her dark past, this was an entirely different kind of silence. "The focus for me was doing new forms of silence like meditation, eating healthy, yoga, hiking or anything that compliments the scientific facts of what to eat to maintain a healthful life," said KJ Landis. Empowering People KJ Landis' personal experience led her to become an expert in empowering people through her workshops on essential oils and knowing the benefits of good fats. She also offers workshops on helping people eat right by educating them on the kinds of organic foods. "I want people to feel empowered, healthy, and enlightened. There are different modalities of silence that have helped me," said KJ Landis. "These are also what I recommend to my clients. It includes the negative thought pot, hiking, yoga, meditation, walking, bathing, candles, oils, prayers, reading, writing and sleep." Negative Thought Pot This concept of throwing away negative thoughts originated from one situation KJ Landis had with her daughter. To help her daughter get rid of her negative feelings that time, they wrote down negative thoughts on pieces of paper and burned it in a pot. The negative thought pot is a wonderful solution especially for those who need to visualize getting rid of feelings that hamper ourselves to be positive. KJ Landis says this exercise can either be done indoors or outdoors and the act of burning is essentially a form of healing. "When you physically have that mind and body connection of writing it negative thoughts down, going through the head and heart on paper, you remember the memory that you physically destroyed it," KJ Landis said. She adds, "It's like slamming the door with the negative thoughts. It's about opening your mind to new possibilities once you close the door on things that are holding you back." Getting Enough Sleep According to KJ Landis, sleep is the easiest way to enjoy the silence. Many of us underestimate the power of sleep. We're usually so wrapped up doing so many things and end up taking sleep for granted. To those who have a hard time sleeping, KJ Landis suggests establishing a time to wind down for the day and get rid of thoughts that prevent us from having a good night's rest. Tools like scented candles, soothing music or eyemasks may help. Once we resolve to allow ourselves to wind down, we will eventually sleep deeper and better. Bathing In Silence Now, this is one of KJ Landis' favorite methods of enjoying the silence. She shares that bathing in silence with scented candles and essential oils feels terrific! Having no windows in her bathroom also adds an extra layer of silence. "All you hear is water. It is highly enlightening and meditative. Plus, the layer of scent allows your imagination to wander and simmer in your memory," said KJ Landis. Reading And Writing Reading is something that a lot of people find relaxing. KJ Landis says reading is a silent healer. Back in the old days when there weren't that many gadgets, we get lost in another world just by reading books. Just like reading, a lot of people also find writing to be therapeutic. In fact, when I was younger, I went out with a guy and was oblivious to the fact that he was emotionally abusive. Journaling did help me cope, and I certainly learned a lot from that experience. "Writing is so powerful because it's coming from knowledge. It's also coming from pure divine inspiration from whatever is around you," KJ Landis said. Meditating In Silence KJ Landis has tried meditation since she was 15 years old. However, it was only five years ago that she felt her meditation sessions were successful. Apart from meditation, KJ Landis likewise practices yoga. There are advanced sessions for meditation, and KJ Landis advises beginners to take it step by step. Both meditation and yoga entail correct breathing techniques which takes time to master. Prayer We have all heard that when everything else fails, prayer prevails. And that's so true! Prayer helps us tune in to the deepest core of our spirituality. And to pray in silence attracts a fantastic sense of peace and empowerment. "The difference between prayer and meditation is that prayer is honoring an outside source or making a request. Praying is a quiet intention, yet it is an amazing healer. That modality is as powerful as meditation," said KJ Landis. Nature Walks KJ Landis says that hiking and walking in Japan is called 'shin-rin yoku' or forest bathing. It is the most popular recommendation by Japanese doctors to treat patients with anxiety, stress, high blood, bipolar, depression, high cholesterol. "It is communing with nature and engaging our five senses. Being in touch with nature is important to our biology, physiology, and emotional wellness," affirms KJ Landis. Sensory Deprivation Tank Not many people are familiar with this method of healing, but KJ Landis says this process costs money. It essentially makes you feel like you're in outer space and taps into your sixth sense which is your instinct. KJ Landis shares that although she failed to feel a sense of enlightenment, other people have succeeded in releasing anxiety through this method. Happy Healthy You Book To know more about KJ Landis' methods for recharging your mind body and soul, her book is an excellent resource for tips and tricks on how to be healthy inside and out. The book teaches you how to get rid of all your emotional and mental baggage. It also educates you on how you can make time to enjoy the healing powers of silence. "When creating a space of sacred silence or ritual silence, work at it as a present to yourself. Because you deserve to be the best you that you can be for all of your life," said KJ Landis. She adds, "Once you realize that everything out there is a part of nature and you figure out your big 'why' to be silent, it can help you in other areas of your life. Once it becomes regular, you'll feel better." Bio KJ Landis is an author, educator, former model, health and life coach, photographer and role model. She has inspired thousands with her holistic approach to health and wellness. Her ability to communicate effectively, compassionately, and with patience has helped build the self-esteem and attainment of others' life goals. Landis grew up the youngest of five children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was taught that food equaled love, and she was greatly loved. At age 12, she was 5'2" and 173 pounds. Her doctors told her parents that if KJ continued to eat in a current manner, she would be a heart attack candidate within months. This scared her parents and the 12 year old into learning about portion control and nutrient dense foods that were beneficial to a young girl's wellness. The next two years saw a 40-pound weight loss, a height increase of 8 inches, and a newfound love of exercise. Then the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. KJ had a fast metabolism from ages 14 to 16, and her weight plummeted to 102 pounds at her lowest, where her height was 5'10." This made her extremely happy, as now she could eat anything she wanted and she didn't get larger! This season, we all seek to venture out to nature….Imagine all you’ve know is streets. Imagine that as a result, you’re afraid of nature….as an unknown. Imagine a mentor takes you to the river for the first time, and hikes along the river, and your eyes open…. That’s what Alisha Camacho is doing with her students in Anacostia and she’s producing a documentary about it, called “Anacostia Unplugged," in this great interview from our archives. Camacho, one of GCM's videographers, developed this online documentary series about how going outside is saving lives, preserving the environment, and empowering communities along the Anacostia River while working with kids as an environmental educator. In her compelling conversation with Green Connections host Joan Michelson you’ll hear: Alisha explain how the kids respond to nature, and her inspiration for the film. How being introduced to nature is changing these city kids, following a few individuals living along the Anacostia River. Why Anacostia in an historically neglected and polluted Watershed What environmental education is. What you can do with kids to introduce them to nature.
