(audio fixed! sorry y'all) The Ayurvedic concept of "ojas" can feel elusive, especially because it's a unique perspective on something that we might refer to as our deep inner well of resilience or the nourishment we can call upon when we are in a time of stress or strain. There's no real physical component we can point to from a western anatomy lens. But it's an essential literal substance in the Ayurvedic paradigm that is required for recovery from "karmic crunch" times and also for things like healthy menstrual cycles, fertility, gentler perimenopause and even longevity.Ayurvedic practitioner Adena Rose Bright speaks to both her clinical and embodied personal experience identifying low Ojas and replenishing this "inner well" through simple practices that are accessible to all of us. We also chat about the often overlooked significance of bodywork in integrative health practices and so much more. Could your skin be reflecting what's happening in your digestive system? Colette explores the Ayurvedic understanding of the gut-skin connection and why true radiance begins from within with Vaidya Kamya Pillai. While modern research continues to uncover the relationship between the microbiome, inflammation, and skin health, Ayurveda has long taught that healthy digestion, balanced doshas, and proper nourishment are essential for clear, vibrant skin. You'll learn how Agni (digestive fire), Ama (toxic accumulation), Rasa Dhatu (the body's primary nourishing tissue) and Ojas (our vital essence), influence skin health and overall vitality. They also discuss how stress, emotions, and nervous system dysregulation can impact both digestion and complexion, and why Ayurveda views beauty as a reflection of internal balance rather than external appearance alone. In this episode you'll discover: The Ayurvedic gut-skin connection The role of Rasa Dhatu in hydration, nourishment, and radiance How Agni and Ama affect skin health The connection between the doshas, stress, and the nervous system in skin health How Vata, Pitta, and Kapha imbalances manifest in the skin Ojas and it's connection to radiant skin Ayurvedic practices to support healthy digestion and glowing skin Why true beauty begins with inner balance Whether you're dealing with acne, sensitivity, inflammation, dryness, premature aging, or simply want to cultivate a healthy natural glow, this episode offers practical Ayurvedic wisdom to support skin health from the inside out. Dr. Vasant Lad is the founder of the Ayurvedic Institute and the man most responsible for bringing Ayurveda to the West. He has spent over 40 years teaching this 5,000-year-old science of life to practitioners across the world, and in this conversation, we sat down together at SoHum Mountain Healing Center in Asheville, North Carolina, where I had just completed a week-long Panchakarma. What unfolded was one of the most quietly profound conversations I have had on this show. What We Dive Into:1. Why unprocessed emotions don't simply pass — and how grief settles in the heart, anger in the liver, and fear in the kidneys until they're physically released.2. How your tongue, pulse, and face reveal what's happening inside your body, often before any symptom appears.3. Why your original constitution (prakruti) shapes everything from your digestion to your temperament — and how modern life pulls you away from it.4. The gap between two breaths, and why Dr. Lad calls it an ocean of awareness available to anyone willing to sit in it.THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:SoHum Mountain Healing Center — Code AndrePK2026 for $500 off from your Panchakarma bookinghttps://www.sohumhealing.comFunction Health — Code KNOWTHYSELF25 for $25 credit towards membershiphttps://www.functionhealth.com/KNOWTHYSELF___________00:00 Intro01:58 What Ayurveda Actually Means02:40 The Five Elements, Three Doshas, and the Body06:18 Prakruti, Vikruti, and the Root of Disease08:00 The Sankhya Philosophy Behind Ayurveda13:33 The Goal of Ayurveda15:26 Dr. Lad's Path: Guru, Calling, and Coming West18:06 Where Western Medicine Falls Short22:05 Ama, Agni, and the Ayurvedic View of Disease25:56 Pulse, Tongue, and Face: The Art of Diagnosis34:29 Reading Psychological Nature Through the Pulse39:00 The Gap Between Breaths: Awareness and Mysticism44:37 How Repressed Emotions Crystallize in the Body47:39 Panchakarma: Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Cleansing51:52 Ojas, Tejas, and Prana: The Vital Essences56:18 Sexual Energy, Celibacy, and the Cultivation of Ojas1:00:07 Life as Meditation: The Unified Field1:06:00 The Ayurvedic View of Death and Dying1:14:56 Dinacharya: The Daily Routine as Spiritual Practice1:18:48 The Doshic Clock and the Yugas1:25:22 Relationship, Self-Knowledge, and the Closing Message___________MORE FROM DR. While many people look at the Sun as just a personality trait, in the Vedic tradition, it is the foundation of your core identity—your soul. In this episode, I share how your Sun placement influences the four aims of life, particularly your physical health and your sense of Dharma, or purpose. We explore what happens when this energy is out of balance—whether it's deficient and lacking confidence, or excessive and becoming controlling—and how you can realign with your natural sovereignty to lead a life full of Ojas (vitality) and inspiration.I hope this episode helps you connect with your inner light and start leading your life with more clarity, confidence, and alignment.QUOTES"The astronomical term for the Sun is Sol, which is also the word for the soul. To be in a room with one of the artist and audiophile Devon Turnbull's texture-rich Ojas hi-fi audio systems may be the closest one can get to being in the studio with the musicians themselves. It's not a stretch to call what he creates “sound sculptures”: Over the past two decades, Turnbull has built up his company Ojas through experimentation, engineering, and deep exploration, and in recent years, his work has been presented at SFMOMA, as well as at Lisson Gallery, both in New York and London. Currently at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (through July 19), as part of its “Art of Noise” exhibition, he's showcasing his large-scale “HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream No. 3,” with listening sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Turnbull discusses why, while there's a certain spiritual factor to his practice, he wants to “at all costs, avoid the guru complex”; the role of Japan in shaping his understanding of sonic purity; and the synergistic relationship between D.I.Y. culture and his systems. Special thanks to our Season 13 presenting partner, Van Cleef & Arpels. In this episode, we dive deep into one of Ayurveda's most fundamental yet misunderstood concepts of Agni. Often translated simply as “digestive fire,” Agni is far more than digestion. It is the body's intelligence to transform food into energy, nutrients into tissues, experiences into learning, and stress into resilience. When this ability weakens, stagnation begins. And stagnation, Ayurveda says, is the starting point of disease.Episode Highlights:Why Agni is considered the essence of lifeHow digestion, immunity, and clarity are all expressions of AgniThe difference between Ama (toxins), Ojas (resilience), and Kapha How does lifestyle shape Agni far more than medicinesWhy are autoimmune diseases not randomSrotas: The intelligent functional pathwaysTimestamps: 00:00 – 05:30: What Truly Governs Health?05:30 – 11:00: What Is Agni Beyond “Digestive Fire”?11:00 – 16:30: Levels of Agni in the Body: From Digestion to Tissue Formation16:30 – 21:30: How to Assess Your Agni?21:30 – 26:30: Agni Beyond the Gut: Mind, Vision, Skin & Metabolism26:30 – 35:30: Strengthening Agni the Right Way35:30 – 41:00: Ancient Bodies in a World of Excess41:00 – 46:30: Mental Stress & Agni Breakdown46:30 – 52:00: Pratyaparadha: When Intellect Turns Against Health52:00 – 57:30: Agni, Ojas & Manas: The Triangle That Runs the Body57:30 – 1:00:00: Autoimmunity Through an Ayurvedic Lens1:00:00 – 1:05:30: Srotas: Rethinking Disease Pathways1:05:30 – 1:11:00: Structural vs Functional Srotas1:11:00 – 1:16:30: How the Body Decides What You Become1:16:30 – 1:21:30: Agni, Dhatu Agni & Why the First Conversion Matters Most1:21:30 – 1:27:00: Can Biomarkers Measure Agni? 1:27:00 – 1:29:30:Treating the Person, Not the ReportAbout Dr Vaidya M PrasadDr. Prasad M, a postgraduate in Ayurveda, has been practicing Ayurveda since 1996. We're honored to be joined by Jonas Wonka, founder of Ora Cacao, whose journey with cacao began not as a business idea, but as a relationship. In this conversation, Jonas shares how cacao found him, what it means to work with this plant as a teacher rather than a commodity, and how ceremonial cacao can support emotional healing, presence, and heart connection in our modern, overstimulated world. We explore cacao through both spiritual and Ayurvedic lenses, including cacao versus coffee, doshic considerations, and how to work with cacao in a way that builds Ojas, rather than depletes it. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm concluding our three-part series on Ayurveda and perimenopause with a deep dive into ojas — the subtle essence that governs vitality, immunity, resilience, and emotional steadiness. We're recording in the dark days of winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, and I begin by reflecting on how seasonal rhythms mirror the inner transitions many of us experience during perimenopause. Just as nature turns inward in winter, this phase of life invites us to slow down, listen more closely, and tend ourselves with greater care.In Ayurveda, perimenopause is not seen as a problem or a decline, but as a time of refinement — a transition into a wiser, more conserving phase of life. Ojas becomes especially precious during this time, as rising vata (air and space) can draw on our reserves of vitality if we're not supported. In this episode, we explore:What ojas is from an Ayurvedic perspective — physically, energetically, and emotionallyWhy perimenopause is considered an ojas-sensitive windowHow hormonal shifts, stress, sleep disruption, and midlife responsibilities can affect ojasThe relationship between rasa dhatu, agni, and ojasSigns of ojas depletion — emotionally and physicallyThe difference between para ojas (essential, life-sustaining) and apara ojas (day-to-day, replenishable vitality)How ojas depletion can show up differently through vata, pitta, and kapha qualitiesGentle, realistic ways to rebuild and protect ojas during perimenopauseWhy this phase is not a depletion story, but a recalibration of energy and vitalityThis episode is an invitation to soften the narrative around perimenopause and to see it as a meaningful turning point: a time to protect the sacred nectar of vitality so we can move into the next phase of life feeling steadier, resourced, and radiant.Resources mentioned:Free download: A Gentle Ayurvedic Guide to Perimenopause: Five Ways to Support Your Nervous System and DigestionSelf-abhyanga (oil massage) practicesPrevious episodes in this series on Rasa and AgniIf this episode resonates with you, I'm also quietly preparing a spring offering that weaves together one-on-one Ayurvedic consultations, group support, yoga, somatic practices, and seasonal rhythm — you can join my mailing list to learn more when it's ready.Join the WAITLIST for Rhythm & RItual: an Ayurvedic Journey for PerimenopauseThank you so much for listening and for walking this transition with curiosity and care.Resources:Ayurvedic Dosha Quick Reference Guide Abhyanga Self Massage Guide Weekend Nervous System Reset Nourished For Resilience Workbook Find me at www.nourishednervoussystem.comand @nourishednervoussytem on Instagram
Send us a textIn today's episode, we step into the tender, powerful transition of perimenopause through the Ayurvedic lens—exploring rasa datu, the first and most foundational tissue of the body.I share how Ayurveda views perimenopause not as a decline, but as a sacred portal from the Pitta stage of life into the Vata years—one filled with potential for wisdom, clarity, insight, and deeper nourishment. Through the lens of rasa, we look at why this season is naturally juicy, tender, and sensitive, and how changes in hydration, hormones, cycles, and emotional resilience all tie back to this vital tissue. In this Episode:The three stages of life in Ayurveda (Kapha → Pitta → Vata)The natural hormonal shifts that occur in perimenopauseWhy this transition is inherently rasa-sensitiveHow rasa depletion, excess, or disturbance shows up differently in Vata, Pitta, and Kapha typesHow the brain adapts to hormonal changesHow peripheral fat tissue continues to create estrogen post-menopauseThe emotional and spiritual dimensions of rasaLifestyle, food, and herbal strategies for deeply nourishing rasaHow supporting rasa also supports agni and ojasThis episode is the first in a three-part series on Ayurveda & perimenopause—next up: Agni, and then Ojas.Resources:Ayurvedic Dosha Quick Reference Guide Abhyanga Self Massage Guide Weekend Nervous System Reset Nourished For Resilience Workbook Find me at www.nourishednervoussystem.comand @nourishednervoussytem on Instagram

Can belief measurably change your immune markers during treatment? Why can the word remission quietly program us to expect a relapse—and what language serves better?Which daily foods have the strongest evidence for anti-cancer support—and how much actually matters?Sugar, insulin, IGF-1—how do they shape cancer risk, and what’s the fruit nuance? Can circadian alignment extend survival for people living with cancer? In this episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi sits down with Ayurvedic practitioner and integrative medicine expert Sam Watts, whose understanding of healing goes far beyond conventional treatments. Rooted in ancient wisdom and backed by science, Sam offers an entirely different way to look at cancer—not just as a physical disease, but as a disconnection from our internal intelligence, lifestyle, and emotional ecosystem. They talk about the mind-body connection, and how emotions like fear and helplessness can literally suppress your immune system, while belief and empowerment activate healing at the cellular level. Sam shares the foods that actively kill cancer cells, the lifestyle habits that disrupt our circadian rhythm and hormones, and why "hope" is the single strongest predictor for survival in cancer patients. In this episode, you’ll learn: How belief and mindset directly influence immune function and recovery What foods (like turmeric, matcha, and EVOO) are backed by science as anti-cancer powerhouses Why poor sleep and synthetic skincare might be more dangerous than you think How Ayurveda offers personalized, intuitive tools for healing The importance of circadian alignment and Ojas in preventing disease What it means to support someone beyond just conventional medicine How to detox from microplastics and endocrine disruptors—naturally Whether you're on a healing journey, supporting someone who is, or just want to better understand how to live preventatively and purposefully—this is one of the most profound health episodes Radhi has ever recorded. Dr. Manas Kshirsagar is an Ayurvedic doctor who comes from a Rig Vedic Brahman tradition with an extensive Ayurvedic background. He graduated from Aloha Ayurveda Academy and the Maharishi University of Management. He's an acclaimed wellness consultant, Ayurvedic consultant and health educator. He provides a holistic approach to medicine, including nutrition, yoga, meditation, detoxification, and effective stress management.Today we're diving into a topic that's reshaping how we think about modern health, the profound connection between our gut and our mind. You've probably heard the phrase trust your gut, but do you know what makes your gut so trustworthy? Modern science says it is our second brain: the Enteric Nervous System. The ENS is a vast network of over a hundred million neurons embedded in the walls of our digestive tract, mostly in the small intestine and colon. That's seven to eight times more neurons than in the spinal cord, which contains around 13.5 million. Our brain contains around 86 billion neurons. Our gut does not just follow orders from the brain. It processes reacts and even remembers patterns and digestion and emotion. It functions independently of the brain, but also communicates with it locally via the vagus nerve. It communicates with the rest of the body through nerves. It uses neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine and actually produces 90 to 95% of serotonin. Both the brain and gut play a major role in mood immunity and digestion both have their own reflexes, sensory neurons and motor neurons, and both respond to stress and emotion, like how anxiety can cause diarrhea. Your gut feels emotional shifts even before your brain processes them, which is why you might get a gut feeling like butterflies or stomach upset during stress. And Ayurveda, this beautifully mirrors the idea that Agni or digestive fire is central to not just physical health, but mental health and emotional resilience. The gut is also a home for Ojas, our vital immunity and vitality. So if our ENS is inflamed or disrupted, our whole system is compromised. In today's episode, we'll explore the enteric nervous system, the complex neural network in your belly that's ultimately connected to your brain. We'll unpack how digestive orders like IBS, bloating and constipation are not just physical issues, but often reflections of deeper emotional patterns. We'll also look at how chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can disrupt our gut's natural rhythm, and how Ayurveda and modern science together offer tools for healing from the inside out.Whether you've struggled with digestion, mood, or both, this episode offers insights to help you feel more grounded, nourished, and connected with your own inner intelligence. Addiction, from an Ayurvedic lens, is more than just a physical dependence—it's a deep imbalance in the body, mind, and spirit. It often arises from a disconnect from one's true self (Prakriti) and an accumulation of toxins (Ama), whether physical, emotional, or energetic. Many turn to substances in an attempt to soothe inner suffering, regulate emotions, or fill a void left by trauma or unresolved pain. • Vata imbalances can manifest as anxiety, restlessness, and a pervasive sense of emptiness, driving the urge to escape through addiction. • Pitta imbalances fuel intense cravings, impulsivity, and self-destructive tendencies. • Kapha imbalances create stagnation, attachment, and emotional heaviness, making it harder to break free from addictive cycles.Substance use depletes Ojas (vital essence) and Prana (life force energy), but Ayurveda offers a path to rebuild through nourishment, breathwork, meditation, and detoxification practices like Panchakarma and Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy). By restoring balance through daily routines (Dinacharya) and sattvic living, we cultivate clarity, resilience, and self-awareness—key elements in long-term healing.Today, we're honored to sit down with Rob Loud, a yoga teacher whose journey through drug and alcohol addiction led him to a path of deep transformation. Rob describes his teaching style as embodied vinyasa, drawing wisdom from multiple yogic lineages. His passion for yoga is evident—not just in his classes, which are creative, intelligent, and dynamic—but in the way he lives his practice. In this conversation, Rob opens up about his early struggles with addiction, the trauma that shaped him, and how rewiring his nervous system through yoga became the foundation of his recovery. We discuss how yoga not only supports sobriety but also helps navigate both daily stressors and the deeper emotional wounds that addiction often masks. This is a raw, vulnerable conversation—one that invites us all into a deeper intimacy with ourselves, our inner child, and the universal thread that unites us: compassion for the suffering we all experience as human beings.Rob, thank you for your wisdom, your presence, and the light you bring to your students, on and off the mat. In the audio world, Turnbull is widely respected for his custom-built, DIY high-fidelity speaker systems. Much of the foundation for his approach to art and design stems from his time spent writing graffiti throughout the New York scene. His company, Ojas, specializes in handcrafted speaker designs, often using horn-loaded and tube amplifier setups that cater to serious audiophiles. His speakers have been showcased in galleries, shops, and personal listening spaces, ranging from places like Supreme, Lisson Gallery and fashion boutiques as well as collaborations with brands like Prada and Loro Piana. His approach is deeply influenced by Japanese hi-fi culture, where simplicity and analog purity take priority over mass-market digital sound. Through his work, he promotes active, deep listening; where music is not just a background noise but rather a central activity that is experienced with full attention. He often sets up listening rooms where people can engage with his speakers in an audiophile-focused, meditative setting. Before Ojas, his time spent making clothing helped produce Nome de Guerre, a now-defunct but highly influential New York-based brand that blended military and workwear aesthetics.http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com
