I first fell in love with long distance hiking in about 2014 and surprisingly it had nothing to do with the movie ‘Wild' that was released in the same year. The more I investigated the concept of long-distance hiking, the more I liked the idea of doing one of the well-known USA Triple Crown trails. The US Triple Crown is a goal that many long distance hikers set themselves and consists of the Appalachian Trail Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail You may be surprised to know that Australia has its own Triple Crown trails, even if they aren't as well known, or for that matter an official thing. In this podcast episode we talk with hiker Kevin Moss to find out all about his experience in completing the Australian Alps walking Track, the Bibbulmun Track, and the Heyson Trail  in a single Calendar year. www.australianhiker.com.au Australian Hiker can also be found on our various social media platforms Australian Hiker Facebook Australian Hiker Instagram Australian Hiker Twitter Australian Hiker Threads Australian Hiker Youtube

We also learn all about Cam's PCT trek, including all that goes into creating a polished Instagram Reel for every day of his hike, his favorite moments from the trail, and the biggest cultural differences between hiking in the US and Australia. With Covid restrictions lifted in W.A. we took the opportunity to escape the city and #wanderoutyonder on a 4x4 camping trip to the midwest region of Western Australia. Beginning our trip in Carnamah, 272 km from Perth and passing through Perenjori, Rothsay and Wubin, I stuck the Hilux in four-wheel-drive to visit some unique outback locations along the Perenjuri-Rothsay 4WD track. Crossing the State Barrier Fence we stopped at Gishuble Well Farm School, Sandlewood Cutter’s Hut, Little Damerwah Well, Beryl Mine and Forrest Lookout before crossing the Rabbit Proof Fence to reach Camel Soak Well and finally heading home along Great Northern Highway. A few historic personalities from the area are people such as Alfred Chopin who is buried here, John Forrest (the states first Premier,) and Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who became lost out here. With my trusty Hema App and the book 4WD weekends out of Perth to guide me (I also took my brand-new Spot Gen 3 personal locator beacon) this was a rare, full family member camping trip that I will definitely remember for a lifetime! The following week I headed out on a scenic 31km solo hike down the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia. I ditched my 4WD for this episode and headed down his legendary long distance track on foot. This episode begins at Canning Highway through virgin Jarrah forest, crossing Canning River, climbing Mount Cuthbert and Mount Vincent, camping at Canning and Monadnocks huts and finishing at Sullivan Rock. #wanderoutyonder #justanotherdayinwa Want more? Sometimes it's little walks near our houses, and sometimes it's multi-day hikes carrying all of our food and water and shelter with us. A few years ago we both took a week off work so we could go walking in Western Australia. We walked along a section of the Bibbulmun Track, and it was one of the best things I've ever done. Today’s podcast is a Delirious West special. The Delirious West is a 200 mile race in Western Australia. The Delirious W.E.S.T. is run almost entirely on the Bibbulmun Track in the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia from the old logging settlement of Northcliffe, to the Historic port city of Albany. The event took place from Wed 19 February with a 104hr cut off, runners having until 3pm Sunday 23 February to make their way to the finish line at the Great Southern Distillery Company in Albany. The Delirious traverses some of the most remarkable forests, unforgiving coastal scrub, stunning beaches, water crossings and some of nature’s finest landscapes along the World Famous Bibbulmun track. Sarah and Kristen both raced the Delirious West, and they both had very different races! Sarah was first female (and third overall) in a record-breaking time of 71 hours and 35 minutes. Kirsten was the last runner and finished in a time of 103 hours and 50 minutes. They both challenged themselves and got the best they could out of themselves. Your first women’s record of the trail in 2008 was a bit over 57 days; in 2011 you destroyed that record and did the trail in a bit over 46 days. How did that enormous improvement come about? Would you describe the demands of a long-distance thru-hike? Granted that weather can have a big impact, what does a ‘typical’ day look like for a long distance thru hiker? Are you ever running/jogging during a thru-hike or is it all hiking? Tell us about your training for a thru-hike. In your experience, would a 3-4+ week thru-hike be good training for ultra marathons of 100 miles or longer? How do you handle sleep deprivation, or functioning on little sleep, for weeks on end? Tell us about your nutrition for a thru-hike. Tell us about your foot care on a thru-hike. You wrote an article recently for the New York Times for which you explored the topic of sex differences, or lack thereof, in ultra distance events. Tell us about that. Tell us about the psychological demands of a major thru-hike. As an exceptional, experienced, and accomplished ultra-endurance athlete, you have surely had some very dark moments (mentally). Would you take us to back to your darkest experience, tell us that story and how you handled it? We wrapped up with some advice for ultra marathon runners interested in tackling a thru-hike.
