Happy International Women's Day! This episode of Sole Sisters is an ode to women runners! Alice has a lot of time to think as she bunkers down for Cyclone Alfred. She unearths the memories of two pioneer marathoners - Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer who were the first women to run the 42.2k distance in the late 60s, despite many people trying to stand in their way. Elise has done some modern-day research and found that women's marathon participation between Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast marathons comprised 27% on average between 2018-2023, with men making up 63% of the field. Participation was much more even in the half marathon. The pair then offer some general reflections on women's participation in marathons and the barriers that still exist that prevent or hinder women from running today. These include not having enough time to train, concerns for safety, childbirth and caring responsibilities. They also have a good chat on the role of confidence and ego in the marathon. You can read the piece Elise wrote on this “Mind the Marathon Gap” in The Blue Line last year. Alice and Elise also debrief the International Women's Day – Running Connection event organised by Love the Run last week. They rehash some of the conversation in the panel discussion about safety while running with ultra trail star Lucy Bartholomew and podiatrist/runner/coach/mum Sophie Fitt. Jess Stenson is the star of the results segment for her gutsy 2:22:56 run at Tokyo Marathon, while Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani wait to line up at another Japanese race this weekend, Nagoya Marathon. Finally, here's a no-context link to a Roy and HG video commentating men's gymnastics from the Sydney Olympics. How fast can Ryan Reynolds, Oprah and Gordon Ramsay run a marathon? On this week's episode of Sole Sisters, Alice and Elise dig into which tinsel town heroes are the best athletes, and who tried so hard they peed their pants? (Big kudos from us for digging that deep!) We also cover a couple of recent World Records (honestly, there's been too many to mention all of them), and some outstanding Australian performances on the indoor track. As usual, we finish with a couple of recommendations not to be missed. We'd also LOVE to see you at a free event this week celebrating International Women's Day! The Running Connection – Movement and Safety event is happening at Collingwood Athletics Track on Sunday 2nd March between 3:30-6pm. Elise will host a live panel with elite trail runner Lucy Bartholomew, runner/podiatrist and coach, Sophie Fitt and forRunners founder/Sole Sisters co-host, Alice Baquie. There'll also be a community run in Yarra Bend Park, a strength and conditioning session hosted by Dani Bryan and a fabulous pilates session with AB. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP For 2025, I'm bringing back a fan favourite. That's right, Talking Luft is BACK! When the mood is right, I'll be dropping a classic Talking Luft episode a few days after the main Life In The Peloton pod drops, just to give you guys an extra bite of the cherry. This is where we try to find a bit more out about special guests though some short rapid fire questions. I'm kicking off with my first guest of the season; Lucy Bartholomew. We had a great day out going for a ride, a cheeky brew, and a bit of a run - just to really get to know more about her and what makes her tick.  Obviously Lucy's best known for her running exploits, so this Talking Luft is going to have a bit of a trail running twist, but the old classic Talking Luft questions are in there too. Talking Luft is always great fun to record, and this ep with Lucy is no different. She won't mind me saying, I had to explain what Luft even is, so if you're new around here this is a great place to start. Have a listen to me and Lucy chatting all things Luft to kick off the 2025 season. Cheers! Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Happy New Year! Life In The Peloton is back, and I'm really excited to kick off 2025 with one of the brightest stars in the Ultrarunning world; Lucy Bartholomew. A Melbourne native, Lucy's been competitively trail running since she was 16, when she lined up at a 100km race along the South Coast of Victoria with her old man. Since then, she's gone on to win Ultra Trail Race Australia in 2022, set the FKT on the truly epic 231km Larapinta Trail up in Northern Territory, and competed over in Europe at Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. As if she wasn't already hardcore enough, in 2024 just a few weeks after finishing UTMB, she jetted off to Nice to tackle IronMan World Champs…just for fun!  Ultrarunners are known for their resilience and determination, and Lucy completely epitomises that. I loved chatting to her about how she trains for 100km+ races, what it takes to make it in the ultrarunning world, some of her wild experiences out on the trail, how her parents - her dad, Ash, in particular - have helped drive her ultrarunning journey, and how she finds the mental strength to push through the tough moments. It was a really inspiring conversation that I think you're going to love. I was super excited to record with Lucy in person back home around my old area. We actually kicked off the pod by heading for a bike ride up Kinglake, before ripping back down for a quick brew. Then, we laced up the runners and headed out for a little 10ker, and chatted along the way. Needless to say, I kept the questions short to save my breath for running next to one of the most experienced ultrarunners in the world. I want to continue to explore even more new Pelotons in 2025, and the Trail Running space feels like the perfect place to start. It's a sport that's fascinated me for a while, having dabbled in a few ultra runs myself, so I wanted to bring you all inside a discipline that may not be so familiar to the cycling fans amongst you but shares a deep sense of challenge, performance, and adventure. I was fascinated to learn more about the psychology of ultrarunning and find out how similar it is to cycling. Lucy's been at the top of her game in the running space for the best part of a decade now, and it's so cool that she's now crossing over into our world and giving cycling a go. I hope you love listening to Lucy as much as I loved chatting with her. She's an all round legend, and might just inspire you to give trail running, or even an ultrarun, a go if you haven't before. We even recorded a cheeky ep of Talking Luft, so keep your ears peeled for that later this week! Chapters 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:08:08 - Part 1: Ride up Kinglake 00:34:15 - Part 2: Coffee shop chat 00:57:27 - Part 3: Running the trails 01:10:23 - Outro ----more---- This episode is also supported by our friends at JOIN. My guest today is Lucy Bartholomew. At the young age of only 28, it feels like Lucy is a veteran of Ultrarunning. She did her first 100km run with her dad's supervision at just 15 years old. Since then she has been a regular protagonist in the ultra-running scene. She is competing in the races all over the world. In 2023 she was 10th in the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc) the biggest trail running event in the world. This year she is trying to go faster and improve on her time of 27 hours. Shortly after she competed at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. So you can see she loves a challenge. In the same year, she won the Tarawera Ultramarathon and was 2nd in the Ultra-Trail Australia. Her ever-positive attitude and constant smiling face make her a fan favorite and I'm one of those fans. We talk about the power of a smile and how it can change the world, turning a bad day into a great day and her strategy of nibble nibble sip sip to get through an ultra marathon. Her wanderlust for curiosity and new experiences and the power of connection and community. On today's show, we talk about all this and more, so I think you are going to enjoy listening to Lucy's.So when I saw her training and running around the mountains in my village in the remote French Alps I had to try and get her on the show.As a bonus episode, Lucy stuck around to take the Beyond the Mountains Questionaire to reveal her true mountain character.Hello friends, I am your host Ashley Pettit welcome to another episode of Beyond The Mountains Podcast. Today, we are thrilled to welcome professional ultra trail runner and Ironman triathlete Lucy Bartholomew to the show. Lucy has talked so openly about the high highs and the low lows of doing what she is called to in this life, and yet she continually persists to, as she says, uplevel to a new devil. At age 27, Lucy is already a trail running veteran with course records, podium finishes, and many lessons along the way. Lucy has crossed the finish line at the most significant events in the sport, like the Tarawera Ultramarathon, Western States, and, most recently, Ultra Trail Du'Mont Blanc, where she placed 10th. She has also embarked on solo adventures that have taken her to the limit, like the 231 K trek along the Larapinta Trail in Australia's Northern Territory. Salomon Running created a fantastic film, Running Out, which documents this incredible feat. But the piece that caught our attention was last year when Lucy crossed the finish line at Ironman Western Australia and qualified for the Ironman World Championship, which takes place in Kona, Hawaii, in just a few weeks. Trail and triathlon, they said it couldn't happen, and now it is all the time. We love the crossover, we love what we've seen in following Lucy's story, and we're so grateful to have this beam of sunshine with us today. We hope you enjoy the show. Thank you for listening. Be sure to check out NEW PATREON tiers to support this, and the Awake Athlete podcasts; let's keep both commercial-free! In this episode, we discuss: - Finding flow again at Tarawara - UTMB and Ironman World Championship - Pinnacles of the sport side by side - Endurance sports is problem-solving with a little exercise in between - Happening "to" you or "for" you - Process and privilege of getting gritty - The honor of knocking on the pain cave door and being let - Calm, confident, curious - Outrun the love of running - When you think you know it, you don't - All gear, no idea - Biggest learning from Ironman Western Australia - Nutrition changes from ultrarunning to triathlon - Lucy's dad's experience at Western States 100 Endurance Run - Trusting intuition to fuel the body with plants - Favorite dish from her cookbook - Dahl - zero waste recipe - Resonating with professional athlete Heather Jackson - Favorite moment of UTMB Namaste- Jess

Kia ora e te whānau. This week by popular demand Eugene and Matt speak to Ash Bartholomew, who triggered a worldwide explosion of  “it's suddenly being very dusty in here” as he rolled into the Placer Track at the end of the Western States Endurance Run two minutes over the 30 hour cut off accompanied by his daughter, Lucy (yes, that Lucy). Ash had started strong but a wrong turn in the final stages cost him dearly . We talk to Ash about his life spent running, and how what started off as a self-described “selfish” hobby has led to an incredible relationship and many miles shared with Lucy over the years and a ringside seat to her journey as a global ultramarathon star. Ash speaks with fondness how his boys Josh, and now Thomas, have also picked up the running bug, with Josh smashing a 13 hour Ultra Trail Australia, and Thomas soon to undertake his first marathon. Honest, reflective, and humble, this is one conversation that you won't want to miss.  Best Enjoyed Running.

In this episode of the Female Athlete Podcast, I chat to professional ultra trail runner Lucy Bartholomew. Lucy shares her introduction to trail running inspired by her father, running her first ultra trail race at only 15! From her first trail race to her most recent, Lucy has received public scrutiny and backlash, overcoming criticism and doubt before she even stepped foot on the trail. We discuss resiliency and how she chooses to focus on herself and trust her internal why. We talk about pursuing your passions and believing in yourself, turning hobbies into your career. Lucy has turned her love of running into her job now running professionally for Salomon. Running fast is not always synonymous with health. Despite finishing an impressive 3rd at the legendary Western States Endurance Run, and outwardly meeting the standard of what an athlete is supposed to look like, Lucy opens up about the unhealthy patterns she fell into: overtraining, obsessive tendencies, underfuelling and amenorrhea. Believing lighter was faster left Lucy mentally and physically burned out, and Lucy explains why taking a break from the sport during the pandemic, gaining weight, and restoring her period was necessary in order for her to have continued success and longevity in sport and to rediscover her love for running. Lucy's advice to listeners is that cutting corners for short term success is not worth the long term suffering and setbacks that follows.  Without the visible symptoms of a physical injury, Lucy neglected taking her mindset seriously until she hit rock bottom. We discuss the importance of taking mental health seriously and treating mental injuries: you have to be mentally and physically healthy to perform at your best, in all aspects of life. As an elite runner with lots of social media followers, Lucy faced horrible insults and body shaming as her body changed. Dealing with challenging thoughts and internal criticism during recovery is hard enough without external unwanted attention Lucy receives, and she bravely shares how leaning on her close friends and family, the support of sponsors and medical professionals, alongside taking a step back from social media allowed her to heal. We explore plant-based eating for everyone, not just athletes, and debunking “perfection” when it comes to diets. Lucy explains her plant-based approach to eating, one that is based on her passion for the environment rather than restriction or diet culture. We emphasize the power of food to bring people together, create family mealtime memories and for cultural celebrations. Rather than promoting an “all-or-nothing” mindset, Lucy and I actually feel similarly about all foods fitting and advocating for personal choice rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition.  Follow Follow Lucy on Instagram @lucy_bartholomew Website: https://www.lucybartholomew.com  Lucy Bartholomew's Official Bio Lucy Bartholomew is a Salomon-sponsored professional ultra trail runner who has been competing in ultras for a decade. She ran her first 100km race, aged 15, alongside her father, and since then has competed around the world winning many prestigious elite races. In 2017 she raced in fifteen ultras and was the first place female in eight of them. The following year she ran her first 100 mile race, the Western States Endurance Run, and finished third in the women's race. All of those medals came at a cost, however, and for a time she lost her love of running, causing her to take a step back and reevaluate her relationship with the sport. Running began for Lucy when she was 15 years old as a way to spend time with her Dad. When he decided to run a 100km race through the blue mountains 5 years ago she trained alongside him for every step of the way. On race day, she ran from place to place to see him and accidentally ran her first ultra. Then she decided that she wanted to complete a race of this distance and ran side by side with her Dad for 100Km, finishing in 12:36:00 and smiling. She was in love, not only with the physical and mental side of performing the art of ultra-running but the community and the environments it took her to.The following year she entered this race again and ran solo finishing in a time of 9:30:00 to place her second female and suddenly she had emerged into this sport with potential. She then wanted to keep pushing the limits and so competed in a 6-day multi-stage race in the Simpson Desert in Australia finishing 2nd female and 2nd overall.Fast forward a few years and in 2014 she ran as part of the Australian/New Zealand Skyrunning team in Chamonix, France winning the junior division of the Mont Blanc Marathon to become the junior world family Skyrunning champion. She then competed in the Ultra distance world championships of 85kms where she won the junior category to become the world ultra-junior trail running champion.A second place in the 2018 Western States race catapulted her into the public eye but when she lined up again in the same race a year later, after a reassessment of her diet, lifestyle and health, her body shape had changed and that same public demanded to know why she was no longer the same runner. This led to a recaculating of what was important, what she loved and a chance to take it back to basics and remembering the “why”. This conversation covers everything from her start in running, her relationship with her parents, her body and her sport. We discuss at length her movie “Running Out”, where she ran the 231km Larapinta Trail in the Autralian Outback and the extreme challenge that presented as well as where is “the line” when it comes to pushing your body. I cannot recommend the movie enough!Lucy is a bright, bubbly spark of joy and inspiration and I loved chatting to her.IG: @lucy_bartholomewhttps://www.lucybartholomew.com/http://www.runningoutmovie.com/
