By the age of 20, Cat Bradley had run her first 50K. By 23, she had bagged multiple ultra trail running wins including a victory at Western States 100 and top 10 finishes and podiums at some of the word's biggest races like Leadville 100 and UTMB. She even had time to score an FTK, becoming the first woman to go under 8 hours on the Grand Canyon's Rim to Rim to Rim. Simply put, Cat Bradley was born to race Ultra Marathons. A collision with a drunk driver took away the hearing in her left ear, left her with a broken pelvis and lingering nerve damage that has delayed - rather than derailed - her plans. We talk about what it has taken to get back into racing form. Why fear of failure leads one to run away from, rather than toward one's goals, and which comedian she'd most like to share a long run with. Check out Brooks Running at https://www.youtube.com/user/brooksrunning A pro ultra runner joins me today to share her interesting story how it feels like to be a pro athlete and the lessons she learned upon building her career in running. She is a former kindergarten teacher turned pro ultra runner with numerous wins, the first American at the UTMB in 2018, and has qualified at the Olympic marathon trials, Cat Bradley. I initially asks Cat why she switched to being a pro athlete and how her day looks like especially having sponsors obligations to pursue. She then shares the different struggles she experienced and what she realized later on about spending her time wisely. How we use our energy for certain things matters most of the time so as to not get exhausted from the load of tasks piling up. And this is where Cat also tells me how she approached the burnout from years of training and what she recommends to other runners who feel the same. She stresses that taking time to rest is "not" a failure. As we talk more about her running journey, I gather from Cat that something "ruined" her collegiate career. And this leads her to tell me what things to unteach to young athletes. Play the video to hear more from Cat and find out how she celebrates her wins then and now. Cat Bradley is an athlete that absolutely loves the sport. She's an ultra-endurance runner coached by Matt Fitzgerald who I had the pleasure of meeting this past August at the Endeavorun retreat in Boulder, CO. Her resume is shocking, in the best of ways: Winner of the 2017 Western States 100 Miler Winner of the 2017 Canyons Endurance Run 100k Former Fastest Known Time record holder of the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim in 7:52 (first woman to break 8 hours) Winner of the 2016 Rio Del Lago 100 Miler Winner of the 2018 Moab Red Hot 50k Winner of the 2018 Quicksilver 100k Winner of the 2019 Castle Rock Trail Festival 50k Winner of the 2020 TransRockies Run stage race (team division) I could go on, but I think you understand now that Cat Bradley is one of the best ultra runners in the United States. Cat didn't start out as a distance runner. In fact, she was an 800m specialist at the University of California - Santa Barbara. At about a half-mile, the 800m distance might as well be a different sport than ultras! Soon, Cat realized that she didn't love the track. She wanted some adventure and found herself taking time off from her college career to focus on through-hiking the Appalachian Trail. That's where she fell in love with mountains, woods, and losing yourself in the visceral beauty of nature. Within a few short years, Cat's passion for ultra distances bloomed and her competitive drive propelled her forward. Soon, she became one of the most dominant ultramarathon runners in the country. In this conversation, we discuss: How she made the switch from 800m track athlete to Appalachian Trail through-hiker to ultra runner The training demands of a 120 mile, 6-day stage race vs. a 100-mile ultra How she mentally grappled with pivoting her running career almost 180 degrees What made her start to believe she could run professionally How she trains for the Grand Canyon R2R2R FKT Whether you're about to run your first ultra or you're a seasoned veteran, you'll love this conversation with one of the sport's greats. They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

16: The Story Of Antics

Be Grand

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2020 68:38

On this very special episode of Be Grand, it’s time to go way back.  Back to a wild, strange and alien time and place that we call the year 2005.  A time of NME, floppy fringes, skinny jeans, retro stylings, eyeliner and something called indie.  Oh, and the small matter of a groundbreaking, life-affirming club night that brought indie music to Dublin in a way that just hadn’t been witnessed before and made the place feel like the centre of a musical universe.  This is the story of Antics. Hitting the much-missed Harcourt Street venue of Crawdaddy in November 2005 like a meteorite that had first crashed through a Top Shop warehouse and a guitar factory, Antics was the brainchild of three friends named Craig Harper, John Goucher and Dave Parle.  Tired of the stale scene surrounding them and with nowhere that played the kind of music they or their mates were into, the DJs took their growing love of the indie rock boom of the early 21st Century and gave it a home in the heart of the city; a home that Andy would soon call his own, like Roger in Sister Sister. Craig joins Andy to talk about Antics’ incredible legacy and the special place it holds in the hearts of anyone who attended.  From the early days of half-empty dance floors to the soaring heights that saw the likes of James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem behind the decks, Craig gives us a firsthand account of what it was like to pour your heart into something and have it succeed.  Also joining Andy to talk style, tunes and VK Ice is his beloved Antics crew of Colm O’Brien, Tony McDermott, Niamh Farrell, Cat Bradley and Meg Dunne.  Plus there’s a brilliant contribution from ace journalist Andrea Cleary, who charts the rise and fall of the indie scene from 2005 to the strange half-life it now inhabits. An epic episode of Be Grand that we loved making, this celebrated a wee Wednesday night in happier times when fashions changed, songs were sung and lifelong friendships were forged. Kara Goucher is pretty much famous. And more than the “famous in our own circles” kind of famous. She’s running royalty; she’s been in the spotlight of a large and passion-driven sport for over a decade. But what happens when you are no longer running for first place? When your body tells you it’s time to change tracks, but you still love what you do? How do you make a shift when you live in the public eye and anything you do is analyzed, celebrated and often criticized? You’ll hear what Kara Goucher did in just a couple minutes. I want to say this first. I believe that Kara is one of those rare athletes who not only has a physical gift but has the emotional depth and mental toughness to take her innate talent and use it to make the world a better place. While she was racing to win, it was impossible for her to even understand the breadth of her gifts, but now that she’s on the cusp of a new chapter, I think she is starting to understand what she can truly do. And the trick for her is to continue including the thing that she has always loved most in her life – running. Because even when the race doesn’t go her way, the fact that she is open to new experiences gives others hope and inspiration that just maybe they can also make it through the natural transitions that life brings us. Today we talk about: Leadville Trail Marathon in all its glory The power of finishing How we don't do anything alone & Todd Straka Brave Like Gabe: Honoring Gabe Grunewald & sharing how her legacy brings strength Winning your age group: recalibrating success & accepting accolades Training with Cat Bradley

The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) has historically been a place for ultra runners to test their skills and endurance against the best in the world and a beautiful and challenging location for a long unsupported run. It's a classic Fastest Known Time (FKT) Route and the Canyon is a place of unparalleled beauty. The route is approximately 42 miles from South Kaibab Trail to North Kaibab Trail and back to South Kaibab with almost 11,000 ft of climbing. The long descents and ascents have beaten many a runner into a "death march" aka walking the final miles and the extreme heat and cold (depending on the time of year) can also take their toll. In this episode we hear stories from the current women's record holder, Taylor Nowlin, as well as a man who set an OKT (only known time) for a QUADRUPLE (or 8x R2R) for a total of 168 miles in one go, Christof Teuscher. Stories also from Sandi Nypaver and previous record holder Cat Bradley (a Western States 100 mile Champion). Cover photo by Nico Barraza. Music by Summer Heart.

Cat Bradley had a 0.1% chance of winning the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run based on the 1,100 ballots that had been cast. In fact, the 1 ballot that predicted she would win was submitted by her boyfriend so she doesn't actually count that one! In the end, Cat Bradley came out of relative obscurity to win one of the most prestigious ultrarunning events in the world, against the toughest competition, at the young age of 25, in a sport where many people don't peak until their 40s. Sometimes I wonder if people would attempt to do tough, crazy things if they knew how hard it would be. Cat is one of those people who actually seems to seek out the toughest, craziest paths, and pursue them with abandon, as long as they are aligned with what is important to her. Namely a life of outdoor adventure where she is free to push her body and mind to places that most people will never go. Fresh off her Western States 100 win, Cat shared her path to this moment plus insights, tactics and a vision for what her future platform may be.
