Kevin O'Leary Kevin O'Leary was born to a middle class family in 1954. The combination of Kevin's mother's family heritage as merchants and his father's Irish charisma truly meant that O'Leary was born for business. Kevin learned most of his business intuition from his mother. She taught him key business and financial insights from an early age. These became Kevin's core philosophies, and the pillars upon which he would one day build his empire. After getting his MBA, he founded Special Event Television, an independent production company producing such original sports programming as The Original Six, Don Cherry's Grapevine and Bobby Orr and the Hockey Legends. In 1986, O'Leary founded SoftKey Software Products (later called The Learning Company), the first software company to apply the principles of consumer goods marketing to the software industry. SoftKey grew quickly as the price of personal computers declined, and millions of American families began to buy software for education and entertainment. In 2003, O'Leary co-founded Storage Now, a leading developer of climate controlled storage facilities. Today, O'Leary leads the O'Leary Financial Group – a group of companies that includes O'Shares ETFs, O'Leary Publishing and a continually growing roster of other businesses. He is also the founder and Chief Sommelier of O'Leary Fine Wines, an award-winning wine label, as well as a member of Boston's 107-year old Hamilton Trust. In addition to Shark Tank, O'Leary co-hosted Discovery Channel's Project Earth television series that explored the financial implications of global climate change, and he is a regular contributor on CNBC. Kevin is an avid guitarist, photographer and author. He has written three bestselling books, including Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women and Money, and most recently, Cold Hard Truth on Family, Kids and Money. Screen Heat Miami Screen Heat Miami (SHM) is hosted by veteran Miami based producers Kevin Sharpley and JL Martinez and each week covers the latest trends in the film, tv, and entertainment industry, including interviews with global and local industry leaders, all told from a "Miami" point of view.

Flyers vs Rangers | The cities are only 97 miles apart by car and they are joined at the hip by a fisted hockey glove. The New York Rangers are one of the Original Six teams in the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyers are an expansion team. The Flyers were about to become the first expansion team to defeat an Original Six team in the playoffs.1974 was the first time these teams met in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In the semifinals, they would go to a game seven before the Flyers could take the next step towards the Cup. It was a physically bruising series. The Rangers were the veteran team used to winning in the early and mid 70’s. The Flyers were the Broad Street Bullies making their move towards recognition. Intimidation was a built-in mindset for this team on the rise.Flyers vs Rangers | The PlayersBill Clement wore the Flyers uniform for a team that he says had made a commitment not to be intimidated by anyone. He would have his name engraved on Lord Stanley’s Cup for the first of two times in this 1974 season.Pete Stemkowski was in his fourth year of six that he would play for the Rangers. A 14-year NHL veteran, he remembers well this 1974 playoff engagement with the Flyers and will explain the regrets he still has about the series. Both Clement and Stemkowski will take you to the ice for the story of these teams in a playoff series that Stemkowski maintains was one of the best in NHL history. They will tell you about the fight between Dave “The Hammer” Schultz and Ranger Dale Rolfe – a fight that Flyer coach Fred Shero said was the turning point in game seven won 4-3 by the Flyers. Was it a planned strategic fight? Why did no Ranger come to the aid of Rolfe who was taking a beating from Schultz? Where were the Ranger enforcers? Were the Rangers really intimidated by these Broad Street Bullies? Here are the stories, and what stories they are, of an NHL rivalry that’s as good as it gets – the Rangers and the Flyers – told by two men who wore the sweaters in this 1974 season.Lace those skates and let’s get to the ice.

In this episode we honour Leafs Legend George Armstrong and reflect on the significance of being an Original Six franchise. Sheldon Keefe clearly understands the importance of the team’s history and noted that this team has a role to play in it and it all begins with 10 games in 18 days to start the season! It’s been a crazy couple of weeks with games every other night! We’re excited to introduce a new, regular segment we are calling “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”, where we'll give our thoughts on what's going well, not so well, or is down right ugly, in relation to our Leafs (hopefully, not too many Ugly situations). In “Up Next for the Blue ‘n White”, we will review the mini-series' coming up in the next couple of weeks and what/who we are looking forward to seeing in the match-ups! We wrap up with the official announcement of the winner of our Holiday Giveaway, which was sponsored by our friends at Summer Fresh! Our winner, Jen Fenton, shared with us a special story about growing up a Leafs fan that you won’t want to miss! It’s a new month and we have a lot to share with you, so be sure to tune in and enjoy! While we ruminate on what a potential resumption of the National Hockey League’s delayed 2020 regular season (and playoffs) might look like in the months ahead, we pause to look back at the rich, but altogether confounding history of the world’s premier pro hockey circuit with Down Goes Brown blog scribe and Athletic columnist Sean McIndoe (The Down Goes Brown History of the NHL: The World's Most Beautiful Sport, the World's Most Ridiculous League). Over its often-illogical 103-year history, the NHL has proven to be – as the dust jacket to McIndoe’s loving, but irreverent book intimates – a league that often can't seem to get out of its own way: “No matter how long you've been a hockey fan, you know that sinking feeling that maybe – just maybe – some of the people in charge here don't actually know what they're doing.  And at some point, you've probably wondered – has it always been this way? The short answer is yes.  As for the longer answer, well, that's this book.” McIndoe helps us cheat-sheet through some of the league’s defining historical inflection points, including: The myth of the “Original Six” – the hallowed group of supposedly foundational franchises cemented during WWII-era 1942 – that conveniently ignores 15 teams that preceded them in the league’s first 25 years of existence; 1967’s “Great Expansion” – when the NHL doubled its franchise count from six to twelve, including pre-emptive strikes against the Western Hockey League with new teams in Los Angeles (Kings) and Oakland (Seals); The 1979 “merger” with the pesky World Hockey Association – which absorbed only four of the challenger’s seven remaining clubs; AND Comical expansion/relocation follies in Cleveland, Kansas City, Denver, and Atlanta (twice). This week’s episode is sponsored by the Red Lightning Books imprint of Indiana University Press – who offer our listeners a FREE CHAPTER of pioneering sportswriter Diana K. Shah’s new memoir A Farewell to Arms, Legs and Jockstraps!

February 14th, 2020   |   The Hockey Betting Podcast The latest episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast has Brian Blessing and Cam Stewart taking a look at games for one of the biggest weekends of the NHL season.  The second half of the show begins at the 13:40 mark. Starting on Friday is a slate of action that will keep gamblers busy through the entire weekend. Playoff jockeying has been at a level rarely seen. It’s Presidents Day Weekend in the United States and Sunday is Hockey Day in America. Adding to that is Saturday Night’s Stadium Series game at the US Air Force Academy. All of which means even more games on the weekend schedule than normal. Cam and Brian are on top of it all with strong analysis and picks. Listen to the latest episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to get all of Brian and Cam’s picks. Friday, February 14th, 2020 NHL Schedule, Betting Odds, Free Picks San Jose Sharks at Winnipeg Jets -129, 6 (TSN3) Jets coach Paul Maurice just got an extension, but Winnipeg’s playoff prospects hang in the balance. The Jets have lost six of their last 10 and are a lethargic 14-13-3 on home ice. Cam likes to take teams coming off a bad loss. Based on that he’s on the Jets. Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins -200, 6 (TSN2, RDS) Following their overtime win at Toronto the Habs are falling back again with two straight losses. Pittsburgh is a strong 19-5-4 with the NHL odds at PPG Paints Arena. Brian calls Montreal “snake bit.” Top defenceman Shea Weber is now out for the Habs. Cam likes the Pens against a “wounded animal.” New York Rangers at Columbus Blue Jackets -132, 5.5 The Broadway Blueshirts rank seventh for goal scoring but will be up against the NHL’s second ranked team for goals allowed. Cam likes the under in this one and expects a defence-oriented game. New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes -225, 6 Carolina continues a neck-and-neck battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the last NHL Eastern Conference slot in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Canes are 18-9-1 at home. Brian loves to go against teams in their first home game that follows a long road trip. Cam says the Canes price is way too high and likes the over. He calls NJD “sneaky” and says Carolina backers better be careful. On Monday’s episode (02/10/2020) Cam admitted his bias on improved New Jersey. Brian also likes over the total. Saturday, February 15th, 2020 NHL Schedule, Betting Odds, Free Picks Detroit Red Wings at Boston Bruins -335 (NHL Network, SN) Boston seeks revenge for an embarrassing 3-1 loss at Detroit last Sunday on NBC. Puck lines may be the preferred method for the mega-favourite Bruins. Boston is 20-2-9 at TD Garden and leads the Eastern Conference. Detroit is 5-23-2 on the road and has the NHL’s worst goal differential. The guys pass based on price. The puck line is the only way to play this one, says Cam. Nashville Predators at St. Louis Blues -132 Slumping St. Louis has lost seven of their last nine games but is 18-5-5 at home. The Preds rank 26th in the NHL for goals allowed and are five points out of a spot for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Cam is adamant with a strong pick in this one. Listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast to get it. Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning -177 (NHL Network) The Lighting have struck for nine wins in their last 10 games and are now just three points out of first in the East. The Flyers are also in good form with seven wins in their last ten games. Cam says the TBL price is too high for him. He will go Philly or nothing here. Edmonton Oilers at Florida Panthers -136 Connor McDavid remains out for Edmonton. On Monday’s episode (02/10/2020) the guys hammered Florida for terrible defence, signing goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, and perpetually failing to live up to pre-season hype. The Panthers 6-2 home loss Thursday to the Flyers is an exclamation point to what Brian and Cam have been saying. Yet, Cam likes Florida here even while admitting that he has bashed the Panthers and hates them. He even calls for their contraction. San Jose Sharks at Minnesota Wild -175 Minnesota has won seven of their last 10 but remain wildly inconsistent. On recent episodes the guys have remarked on just how bad San Jose is. But laying money with Minnesota is often risky. The Wild fired coach Bruce Boudreau on Friday. Cam won’t lay the Wild price. The guys lean over the total here. Dallas Stars at Montreal Canadiens -114 (CITY) This is the second of a three-game Canadian road trip for a Dallas team struggling to light the lamp. But the Habs home record is a weak 13-15-4. On Friday, Dallas will be resting in Montreal while the Habs play at Pittsburgh. The guys love the price on the Stars. Toronto Maple Leafs -195 at Ottawa Senators (CBC) Cam continues to crack on the “lucky” Leafs, and the guys always refuse to lay the lumber with heavy favourites. Brian and Cam agree that the Toronto Maple Leafs are “over-rated.” This price is “insane” according to Cam, and he likes Ottawa with the over. Brian agrees. Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche -240 (NBC-Stadium Series at Air Force Academy Falcon Stadium) The puck line may be the way to go here with a very expensive but talented Avalanche team in a mismatch. Cam says the Kings have “tapped out” and likes the Avs to rebound after a loss to Washington. He calls for a parlay or taking the puck lines on Colorado. Chicago Blackhawks at Calgary Flames -152 (CBC) Somehow the Flames remain in position for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs despite weak goal scoring and a mediocre 13-10-4 home record. The once Mighty Blackhawks have lost six of their last seven. The guys agree that Chicago is a mess. Cam will pass due to price. Washington Capitals -130 at Arizona Coyotes Slumping Arizona has lost eight of their last 10 and is fighting for their playoff lives. The Coyotes are a disturbing 13-11-4 at home. Washington makes bank on the road with an impressive record of 20-6-1. On Wednesday’s episode (02/12/2020) Brian and Cam delivered with a strong pick on the Caps 3-2 win at Colorado. Arizona is alarming Cam after their loss to Ottawa. The guys just can’t trust the slumping Coyotes. New York Islanders at Vegas Golden Knights -162 On Friday’s (02/07/2020) and Monday’s (02/10/2020) episodes of The Hockey Betting Podcast, Brian said the Isles are a potential money maker for the stretch run. New York ranks sixth in the NHL for goals against and has won five of their last seven games. Erratic Vegas is 14-10-4 at T-Mobile Arena and has lost five of their last eight. Listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast for a strong pick on this one from Sin City. Sunday, February 16th 2020, NHL Key Games Boston Bruins at New York Rangers (NBC) The guys like over the total in this NBC matinee marquee matchup of Original Six teams. Edmonton Oilers at Carolina Hurricanes Listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast for analysis and picks for this game. Anaheim Ducks at Vancouver Canucks Cam wants no part of “stepping in front of Vancouver” these days as the Canucks are hot. Columbus Blue Jackets at New Jersey Devils The guys expect a business-like win by CBJ in this one. Toronto Maple Leafs at Buffalo Sabres (SN) Over the total is Brian’s pick, and Cam agrees. Cam also likes the Sabres at home to beat their neighbor from across the border. He says Buffalo is always up for Toronto at home. Make sure to listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast to get all of the picks and insight from Brian and Cam.

It means something in Toronto. It means something to people. It’s an Original Six franchise. There’s so much history and expectation there.” (11:31) “The NHL game, every ten games let’s say, is played at a different pace. So, every team at ten games is a different team at twenty. Every team at twenty is a way better team at forty.” (19:06) “I play a sport that, if you ask any GM, any coach, any player for that matter, what percentage of the game is mental, you’re not gonna get a percentage lower than eighty.” (23:57) “I think athletics puts you uniquely in touch with that because you know you can go sprint and run as fast as you can or jump as high as you want. You can’t just go faster because you want to. It’s hard. It takes a lot of work.” (30:24) “If you don’t have a skill and you can’t skate, this game is not going to be friendly to you.” (33:49) “The concept of making effort cool again, I relate to that greatly.” (51:40) LINKS MENTIONEDBetter! This week is part two of two, which focuses on the 90s, the next period of rapid NHL growth where some more questionable ownership and markets choices were made, and the beginning of nearly two decades of labour strife between the Owners and the NHLPA. This week in the Two-Man Booth, Nick and Neil do things a little differently and delve into some NHL history. This series looks at the history on NHL Expansion, from the Original Six doubling its membership in 1967, to Seattle in 2021. This week is part one of two, where they go all the way back to the turn on the 20th century and look at the history of the league and how it became the Original Six-- how markets were chosen in 1967 (and the collusion that lead to some of those choices)-- further markets in the 1970s, concluding with the WHA Merger (and other small movements in the 1980s) and how the actions of a particular player-agent-turned-union-head helped shape the modern age... This week in anguish: - On a day meant more for potent potables, we quaff some sobering statistics instead. - Better know a bookworm as Ardella introduces you to the newest in a line of academically minded Canuckleheads, Josh Teves.  - The following people will not be fired: Ian Clark. That is all.  - We weep for the fate of Dave Pratt, and wax nostalgic about the boyhood of Dan Russel. No, that can't be right. *checks notes* Huh. - How Did Ardella Not Know about the Original Six?   Thanks for listening! If you liked the show, tell a friend.

077: Before the NHL’s “Original Six” – With Andrew Ross

When quizzed on the historical origins of the National Hockey League, most fans reflexively default to the hagiographic construct known as the “Original Six” – the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings – as the seminal franchise lineup from which the modern-day NHL was ultimately built. In fact, the league traces its official roots to a much friskier start dating back to 1917 – when, out of the ownership discord of the predecessor National Hockey Association (1909-17), and a rising challenge to Stanley Cup supremacy from other fledgling pro circuits like the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Western Canada Hockey League – a then-four team (and all-Canadian) NHL made its debut with franchises in Toronto (Arenas), Ottawa (Senators), and Montreal (Canadiens and Wanderers). Over the next 25 years, the league fitfully expanded and contracted across cities like St. Louis, Quebec, Hamilton, Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit – and even a 16-season, dual-franchise odyssey in New York.  But, when the NHL Board of Governors terminated the financially troubled Brooklyn Americans after a World War II-ravaged 1941-42 season, the league settled back to just six reasonably solid clubs – a group that would remain stably intact until 1967, when the ambitious “Great Expansion” doubled its membership to 12, and set the stage for even more meteoric growth in the decades to follow. Author Andrew Ross (Joining the Clubs: The Business of the National Hockey League to 1945) joins host Tim Hanlon to talk about the league’s surprisingly rough-and-tumble first quarter-century of existence – including the winding economic journey that eventually defined hockey’s place in the North American professional sports firmament.
