He develops a reputation as both an athletic phenom and a kind, generous sportsman. After the economic crash of 1907, his father struggles to send him to college at Princeton where he becomes a two-sport star in football and hockey. After graduation, Hobey embarks on a summer motorcycle trip around Europe – a grand experience interrupted by the ominous clouds of conflict circling the continent. Learn more about your ad choices. His Princeton glory days behind him, Hobey moves to New York and begins a job at JP Morgan Bank. A member of what would be called the Lost Generation, Hobey misses the adrenaline rush of his college sports stardom and becomes despondent. But he soon finds himself in the social circles of the flamboyant and extremely wealthy Percy Rivington Pyne 2nd, who invites Hobey to live with him in his Gilded Age Manhattan mansion. As WWI rages, Hobey arrives in France to prepare for aerial combat. He embraces being a fighter pilot, finding the adrenaline-fueled commonality between war and sports. While in Europe, Hobey exchanges dozens of affectionate and loving letters with Percy Pyne. And during his off-duty forays into Paris, Hobey experiences the city's lively cultural scene – including a reignited friendship with famed songwriter Cole Porter. After proving his combat valor in the air, Hobey – now a captain - receives his orders to return home, but he insists on taking one last flight. It would turn out to be his last one. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
In our first segment, we discuss the Montreal Canadiens game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, during which the Habs were officially mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. As is the case too many times with these teams, the officiating was the story of the game. In our second segment, we discuss Lane Hutson not being a finalist for the Honey Baker award for the second year in a row. Finally, we get into some mailbag questions, and ask ourselves, should the Canadiens trade for Jonathan Huberdeau? Formed in a city best known for either Motown Soul or Garage Rock, shoegazers Majesty Crush were an anomaly in the early ‘90s Detroit music scene. Inspired by the music coming out of the UK, Majesty Crush's sound employed swirling guitars, hazy vocals, and captivating dreaminess while incorporating elements of soul and R&B. After their song “No. 1 Fan” received significant airplay during prime hours on the Windsor radio station 89X, Majesty Crush - David Stroughter (vocals), Mike Segal (guitars), Hobey Echlin (bass) and Odell Nails (drums) - signed with Dali Records, a subsidiary of Warner/Elektra and released their debut full-length, Love 15, in 1993. However, just a month after the album came out, Dali Records folded bringing Majesty Crush's momentum to a halt and, ultimately, to an end just a few years later. Though their time was short, the band amassed a small but loyal following in the shoegaze scene of the early ‘90s and have been cited as an influence for everything from indie guitar groups to metal bands. And curators of this style of music have sought out Majesty Crush's music to include on compilations like Third Man Records' Southeast of Saturn which features 19 tracks from Detroit shoegaze and dream pop artists. In March 2024, Numero Group released Butterflies Don't Go Away, a 2 LP set featuring the Love 15 album as well as singles, EPs, and rarities, all remastered from the original tapes. The package is completed by a 24-page booklet. Majesty Crush bassist Hobey Echlin joins us on this episode for a deep dive into not only his band's career but the ‘90s independent music world. As a music journalist, Echlin has amassed a number of stories over the years and this conversation - at times - goes to places you'd never expect. Weldie and Andrew dissect the St. Cloud State Men's Hockey team as they vault into a first place tie with Denver after sweeping the Pios. The result came as a price as Hobey hopeful Dylan Anhorn is out for the rest of the season warming up for Saturday's game. Our hosts discuss how it will effect the team. Also, preview the rest of the season as to who has the inside track, Sinkers and Floaters and goalie tandem history.
Things discussed: Big Ten rescheduling: Not in favor of replays, don't need the divisions but better that than replays. Absolutely gross to play Michigan-Ohio State in an antiseptic NFL stadium one week after The Game. Seth: No replays ever. If you lost to a team in the playoffs, you're out of the playoffs (sorry, Georgia). Conspiracy: Ohio State was about to be locked in with Wisconsin; if it's not unfair Ohio State thinks it's not fair. Showcase, Showcase, Showcase! You ALWAYS get the best games. NIL: Once this gets normalized it should be okay for Michigan, but they're being way too careful about following the intent of a rule that had no intent other than to not get sued. Sam: What if players want what the other player got? Seth: We figured this out already. Sam throws cold water on us. Michigan is intent on living in a world that nobody else is in. It's already pay for play. Look at the Fortnite ad: Nobody was like "Ooh, I'm gonna go play Fortnite" they're like "Hell yeah, my boy Roman Wilson is getting paid!" It's true that the system, especially the transfer portal is out of control. Hockey: Craig thinks they're going to be *BETTER* this year? Brian disagrees: they're going to be kids, set back to the 2-year cycle. Hobey for Hughes? He'll be the best player in college hockey, but that's rarely who wins the Hobey. Softball: Read Alex's column. Short version: Hutch has to adapt again. She has before!

For this episode, your host Kelly “K-Fresh” Frazier is joined by Hobey Echlin, bassist of the early 90s Detroit shoegaze band Majesty Crush. They were an anomaly in the Detroit music scene as they were compared to bands with the shoegaze sound that typically comes from the UK, but they were oddly connected to so much within the city of Detroit. They were surrounded by other artists who also didn’t fit in any creative box while their lush, dreamy sounds along with the colorful members of the bands (especially vocalist David Stroughter) made them memorable around the city. But it was the passionate lyrics of Stroughter that set them apart and defined them. Majesty Crush captured a vibe of Detroit while pulling from their global influences. The story of Majesty Crush is just as relevant today. With two of their members being Black men (drummer Odell Nails and vocalist David Stroughter), they would have to endure much of the same bigotry that we are still fighting against in the current Black Lives Matter movement. As for Stroughter, he would died during an altercation with the police in Los Angeles in January 2017, as this would be another instance where bring Black, having mental health issues, and how the police deal with such a situation come into discussion. With Majesty Crush, it was as if they were too good of a band for this world. As you’ll hear with this conversation with Hobey Echlin, Majesty Crush were somehow in the most interesting places at the right times, but circumstances were not always on their side. They were definitely a band with a flame that shined too bright. They were special, but sometimes that means that flame burns out that much quick. The story of Majesty Crush is done yet. Third Man Records is set to release Southeast of Saturn, a collection of music from Detroit’s space-rock/shoegaze/dream pop scene of the ‘90s, to be released November 20, 2020 digitally and on vinyl, and it will feature Majesty Crush’s “No. 1 Fan”. Listen in on this episode for an amazing story about how this came to be. Hopefully we can get all three of Majesty Crush’s main project re-released in the future, because as you’ll hear in this episode, it was one of David Stroughter’s last wishes for his music to be heard. A nostalgic look back at our favorite hockey heroes and legends who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960s,70's and 80's. In episode number 29 we look back at the career of one of the toughest, and courageous team players in the history of the Rangers. Winger George McPhee. During his 7 year career in the NHL and 5 with the Rangers from 1982-1989 McPhee displayed his toughness, courage, and willingness to do whatever it took to help his team succeed during the regular season and the playoffs. He has also established himself as one of the most successful Presidents and General Managers in the game today. * Despite being only 5'9 and 170 lbs, McPhee earned the distinction as being one of the best fighters to ever compete in the NHL and quite possibly the best pound for pound fighter in Rangers history along with heavyweights Orland Kurtenbach, Nick Fotiu and Colton Orr. * Signed with the Rangers as an undrafted free agent in 1982 after winning the Hobey Baker award as the top NCAA hockey player while playing for Bowling Green. * Made his NHL debut during the Rangers 1983 playoff series against the Flyers. This was mostly about Hobey front-runners. My recording got kinda screwed up like 50 minutes in so there's a couple dead seconds and we lost like seven minutes of us talking. I'm not sure what happened but we mostly made up for it then we make fun of Dick Umile at the end. Pretty good show.
We talked about Hobey stuff and other things but mostly Joey called me annoying for saying Bill Belichick is a bad person. But guess what, baby: He is!!!
Yung Intelligence gets Joey Bada$$ Meloni on the horn from Chicago to chit chat about Thursday's games, the Hobey, the Richter, and the national title game.
We talk about the first round of the playoffs, a few Western teams, Seth Appert getting fired (and who replaces him), and the Hobey.
This week we talk about Lowell, Providence, North Dakota, Minnesota-Duluth, BU, BC, Harvard, the Hobey race, and more.
This week we're talking about probable Hobey winners from the first half and going in hard for Army's Parker Gahagen, who probably won't win it, which is BS.
